Just upgrade to 10.8 and now cant print to windows Share

Hi, I just took the plunge and upgraded to 10.8  My old system was 10.6.  The problem is the college I work for has a mandate on printing that all print jobs must print through the windows print server.  The printer vlan is not accessible to the general public, the queue must be accessed through their 2008 server.  My previous installation procedure requires using the LPD path such as this lpd://server_name/queue_name   We cannot print via SMB as this would require embedding your password into your key chain.  We are forbiden to do this (i dont make the policies, i just follow them)
The type of printer is a xerox 7556, and I am using the latest driver version that supports 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8 (it is version 2.71 from the xerox web site here is the link)

I have tried this exact driver with 10.6 and it works flawless
the problem is this:
when you are in your application (ie: safari, word, preview) and "File Print".... before you then verify your print settings and hit print there are 2 files already in the print queue called "Printer Status" and these will not print. They will fail with the error of 'Filter' failed 0 copies. once you then press Print the print job will get stuck behind these "printer status" jobs and if you delete the "printer status" jobs the actual print job is released and prints.
Its and odd one... I have checked a few other of the xerox drivers (7120 and 7755) and they seem to work without this problem.  I am forced to use this driver as the machine requires accounting information and the accounting seems to be model specific.
Any thoughts?

It seems this is a on going problem that lots of folks have but Xerox does not want to address. From what I can tell, the driver sends a check printer status command to the printer that generates the printer status jobs in the queue. The request is not recognized by the Windows server therefore is ignored.
The command that issues the request can be commented out of the PPD, but that's difficult to support in an enterprise environment.
It would be a simple thing for Xerox to simply put a check box in their setup that would let you turn it off when installing the printer.
Xerox isn't the only one who is making this mistake. I've had the same issue with Ricoh printers.
Interesting side note: Mavericks does not seem to suffer from this issue.

    10.6.8 cannot access iCloud's facilities - you can set Mail up manually and there is a hack which some people have used to sync calendars (see below) - you cannot sync any other type of data.
    This is the situation with iCloud and Snow Leopard:
    Your email, calendars, and 'Find my iPhone' will be migrated to iCloud. Contacts and Bookmarks cannot be migrated from a Snow Leopard Mac.
    Your iDisk, together with website hosting and Gallery, will continue to work as before until next June.
    Syncing of Dashboard Widgets, Dock Items and Keychains between Macs, and Mail Accounts, Mail Rules, System Preferences, Signatures & Smart Mailboxes between Macs & iOS devices, will cease altogether.
    You will be able to access email and calendars on the iCloud website at http://icloud.com provided your browser is reasonably up-to-date.
    You will not be able to sync contacts or bookmarks from a pre-Lion Mac.
    You will be able to enter the server settings for email manually in the Mail application and access your email.
    You will not be able to sync your calendars directly.
    Some people have been able to set up calendar syncing by using the method detailed here - this is an unsupported hack and may not be reliable, and may stop working at some future point.  BusyCal is an iCal-like calendar application with extra facilities: it can sync with the iCloud Calendar while running on Leopard, Snow Leopard or Lion.
    There appears to be no method of syncing contacts (though Address Book on a Mac can be synced with Google or Yahoo address books - I don't know how reliable this is).

    Thanks but I've reinstalled V4 until V5 is stable and more or less working the way I want to work - not the way some programmer thinks I should want to work.
    You know change is OK but only if it makes things better for the user Change shouldn't be made to make the developer feel good about his/her expertise. For me V4 was Good. V5 gives me too many issues to deal with - I just need a relatively simple browser (and I guess I'm not the only 1 out there that feels like this).

    Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
    It might also be a good idea to contact Square for assistance.

    Same for me with Iphone 5 and IOS 7 on mac pro. Install ITunes 11.1 and after reboot nothing work. Work only with Mac Pro in safe mode.
    I have uninstalled Wi-fi-sync1.0 app from MacPro and Itunes sync well with iphone.

    Be sure to start your iMac using its original grey System Install DVD: Insert that disc and start your Mac while holding the d key. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen select Disk Utility and format the hard disk. Select "Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)".
    Then, install OS X.

    Apple Support, I have just purchased 3 movies 2 from my account and 1 from my wifes account and both systems are stating that it will take 2 days to download.  I have a FIOS 150 megabit per second up and 150 megabit per second down busiuness class fiber service to my location.  I have tested downloading 10Gbyte files from two other locations and both work fine.  I additionally went out and have tested doing speed tests (http://www.speedtest.net/) from over 10 other locations all over the US and all are over 75 magabits per second download speeds with a few hitting 100 and 125 megabit per second speeds.  What is wrong with your servers or your internet connection????
    This is VERY FUSTRATING!!!
    I have additionally tried to download them with my Apple TV and two different PCs all wired on Gigabit Ethernet with jumbo frames enabled.  I have tried differnet DNS servers also.  I can upload and download files to my office 50G in less than 1 hour.  I have also download movies from 2 other movie sites without any problems.

    If you changed routers your printer is still looking for your old one.  Here is how to get it back:
    1. On the front of the printer: Setup > Network > Restore Network Defaults.
    2. From the same Network menu run the Wireless Setup Wizard.
    3. Now, on your computer add the printer.  I'd help more but cannot unless I know what operating system you are using.

    I just had a similar problem and it reminded me of trying to install a logitech wireless mouse a while back. Nothing I could do to make it recognize the driver... until I ran across a website that told me that antivirus and firewalls might prevent it. So... AVG Free just updated itself earlier today... FF4 would only startup once after reboot, then start and show in task mgr but no window(s)... Uninstalled AVG new version. FF4 starts up every time. Reinstalled older version of AVG Free and now everything seems to be OK again. Hope this helps!

    I upgraded to 08 and now when i try to download photos to facebook or other photo sharing site i can't access iphoto. It shows up in the application window but is not accessible.
    I have no problem opening iphoto directly from desktop...just seems to be an issue when on a sharing site?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    *For Users of 10.5 Only*
    You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.

    *For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
    Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
    To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
    This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
    If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
    If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
    *If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
    Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • I have just upgraded to OSX Maverick and now my Apple TV has taken over my iTunes videos. I have tried turning off homeshare and iHave gone into system prefs and disabled the remote, but the problem persists. Any ideas.

    After upgrading to OSX Maverick my Apple TV  has taken control of my iTunes videos insisting I have to watch it on my TV. I have tried disabling home sharing on iTunes and on the Apple TV menu, I have also checked the disable Infrared facility in Systems Prefs Security. Even if I put the Apple TV in standby as soon as I hit a key on my iMac, Apple TV comes back on and on my Itunes screen I get the Apple TV logo imprinted on the screen, meaning I can no longer watch it on my MAC, I have run out of ideas. Can anyone help.

    I think you're headed the right direction. There is an AirPlay icon (on mine it is up near the play/pause controls) that I believe is used to set the default desitination for the video to play.
    I'd never seen your issue before, but opened iTunes on a recently-upgraded-to-Mavericks MacBook and it did exactly as you described. While the video was loading, I switched the AirPlay option to the computer instead of ATV and it began playing locally (after a delay as you'd mentioned). I then read this page, which is actually quite old: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1091073, which lead me to the icon near the play/pause button. It now has Computer selected on it, and defaults to play locally instead of the ATV even after quitting and reopening iTunes. I hope that is helpful.

    I just upgraded my Firefox program to a new version and immediately I started seeing a group of black lines running 10-15 deep running across my computer screen while on the Web. As I scroll down they sometimes disappear. Then they reappear. It doesn't happen all the time. But often enough.

    Contact Apple. That sounds like a hardware issue in the graphics circuit.

    I just upgraded to ff 6.0.1 via an automatic push. Since then, ff hasnt been able to connect to the internet. Error message:
    Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.google.com.Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.google.com.
    IE has no trouble connecting to the internet.

    After upgrading, your firewall may not be recognizing the new Firefox version and is not allowing it access to the internet. On your firewall progam's allowed applications list, remove Firefox, then re-start Firefox, try going to a website, your firewall will detect the new version of Firefox, then give the permissions needed for Firefox to have internet access.
