Just upgraded to 10.5.8...I need to free up some space...

...I think?  I upgraded so I could use my new iPod.  After installation I was checking everything out and noticed that I only have 6.08GB of free space.  Is that enough to run efficiently or do I need to do some Spring cleaning on my HDD?  I'd like to see what I could do to try and speed things up a little and didn't know if that would help.
I do have a lot of music on here and probably a lot of duplicates since Ioad the songs into iTunes but still have those same songs in a seperate folder.  I just haven't had time to go through and delete them.  I also have a 1TB external HDD so I really don't need all the songs and pictures on my computer's HDD I guess.  Is there a way to hook up my external to my wireless network through my Airport Extreme or is that not advisable?
Just curious if anyone has any tips to help clean up, speed up and organizea bit.  Thanks for any help!

  • My startup disk is full. I need help clearing up some space.

It says 12.6 GB of movies; I don't know where these movies are. I don't have any downloaded. How can I find them to delete them?
I have also deleted all of my photos except three and it still says 11.44 GB. That docen't seem right either.
When I search my computer, files in Dropbox come up. But I thought those weren't included in my computer?  (There are no movies on there, either.)
Sorry for the multiple parts of a question. I can't even download an update.

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • I need to free up some disk space?

I'm still not used to these apples so I don't know what to do. I bought a mac computer game for my child and it says "Requires at least 1 MB of free disk space" Free up some space on your local disk and then relaunch. I don't know where to go to see how much free disk space I currently have. Also I don't know what things I can safely removing to free up that space. Can anyone help me with this?
I have itunes with several songs on it .. . .. I'm assuming thats taking up some of the space but I can't really take any songs off because then my IPOD is screwed. But what other things can you remove to free up space? Please help thanks!!
    Jamie

    Hi Jami320,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
As John said, you may want to move some of your files off your computer temporarily, until you can free up some space. You are in luck though, you already have one. You can use your iPod as a storage device, so you can put files on it as long as you have enabled disk use (Knowledge Base Document #61131 on Using your iPod as a Storage Drive).
After you have freed up enough space; before you install the game, you may want to free up more space for future use.
A great program to show you exactly what is on your computer is WhatSize.
If you are going to use WhatSize to delete any files/programs/applications, please be careful and make sure you know exactly what you are deleting and if there are any repercussions. WhatSize will show you files that you would not normally see; they are referred to as "invisible files". These invisible files are hidden from the users view because they would clutter the desktop and they hold vital information that if corrupted or deleted may cause problems. Please make sure you know what you are doing!
Have you deleted files that you don't use; like for my iBook, GarageBand. I use GarageBand on my iMac because it is much easier and faster, so I deleted it on my iBook. Have you tried the "erase install method"? The reason for doing this is because Mac OS X installs all the necessary fonts, languages, drivers, etc that people all over the world my need, by default. This tends to take up some room that you might want to get rid of (make sure first what you don't need and need). You erase and install your system software (Knowledge Base Document 301270 About Install Options w/ Mac OS X 10.4), and when installing, do a custom install. This way you can install the languages, drivers, and applications you want. The same technique can be done with iLife.
    I hope that helps,
    Jon

  • To free up some space on my ipad I need to delete some photos. If I do this does it delete them from my Mac Desktop events and albums?

To free up some space on my ipad 2 I want to delete a whole bunch of photos. I have copied all these photos into albums and events on my mac desktop. When I delete them on my ipad does this delete them on my Mac Desktop?

Have  no idea whether this will help you, however...
I Have had several problems with my Ipad Air since upgrade, crashing, telling me I had no memory, plus stupid icloud wanting me to log in all the time.
i Did a reset, still same problem. I have very little on my iPad, so should have had lots of space left.
eventually checked out iCloud and found that it has been backing up 2 previous ipads, and both our phones. I have deleted them from this ipad and bingo all my memory is back!
give it a try, go into your ipad account and see what it is up to.
my last problem now is when I start to type, I only get the first letter out before it stops, second go works????.
no idea why these updates have to be so large, but then I don't work for Apple LOL
shouldnt continually have to buy new devices, they should last much longer for the price, so we continue to look for solutions.

  • Need to free up disk space

So I keep getting the "Free up disk space message" I'm trying to do so, but when I go into disk utility the "erase free space" button is shaded grey so I can't click it. Please help!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
That isn't what you need to do. You have to manually (do not install or use any "Macintosh 'cleaner" apps) move files to permanent external storage or delete extraneous files... downloads are prime candidtaes to make some free (empty) space.
Failure to address this in a timely mannor can cause your computer to lock up, or not boot.

  • Need to free up storage space but want to make sure photos from my camera roll are definitely in iCloud before deleting them. iPad3, IOS 8.1.3

I have plenty of iCloud storage space but need to free up storage on the iPad. If I delete the camera roll photos and the photostream, will I be able definitely to access the photos in iCloud? in Settings > iCloud I have no iCloud Library....so I'm confused. If someone can help, I'd be grateful.

Import photos through iPhoto. (You will prompt to delete from iPhone when import competes).
Backup your Mac. (At least the iPhoto Library)
    Backup to iTunes.
Backup to iCloud. (Check in Settings>iCloud>Storage and Backup>Manage Storage>your device name>Camera Roll ON).

  • I have just upgraded to MOTOX. Have GoPro, Needs Wifi Fi, WiFi kills, 4G, No Pandora, Spotify, etc. In this case, CAR I need both. How?

Need to see if it is possible to have both WiFi (for GoPro App Camera Control) And 4G enabled (for Pandora, Spotify, Mail, etc.) in the car.
    Can this be done?

GoPro Camera is Broadcasting the WiFi Signal. Phone recognizes the signal, connects w/ GoPro using Password. Control of camera works as required.
At that time, the 4G is shut off, thereby stoping all other data/internet required apps, Mail, Pandora, Spotify etc.
I am guessing that the phone "thinks" it is connected to the internet through WiFi, even though that WiFi connection is the GoPro Camera.
Has it always been like this? I had a Razor using Ice Cream Sandwich (I think) I also had a Grandfathered unlimited Data Plan, and both worked together, WiFi to Camera and 4G, Since the upgrade to MOTO X, and losing the unlimited plan and moving to 4GB plan, I now seem to have to choose between one or the other.
This will be VERY UNCOOL. I am sure other will be experiencing similar problems...Especially GoPro users trying to use the cameras in their cars.
If their is no current fix, there needs to be one soon...

  • Just upgraded to Maverick, now iPhoto library needs to be upgraded. Can I safely do this without losing my photos?

I didn't do any backups before upgrading to Maverick...

Well do a back up now.
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

  • Just upgraded to Photoshop CC, vram help needed.

and get error regarding vram needing to be 512. I have 2 NVIDIA cards - one with 256 the other with 512…any help to resolve this?

Exactly what model Mac are you using?  (Apple > About this Mac > System Report > Hardware > Model Identifier)
If it's a MacBook Pro, you are probably talking about having 2 GPUs - an embedded GPU and a discrete GPU.    You can only select (use) one at a time; the place to select the GPU is (strangely enough) in System Preferences > Energy Saver:
Better Battery Life = embedded GPU,
    Higher Performance = discrete GPU
If you are currently using the discrete GPU, try switching to the embedded GPU.  The embedded GPU uses system RAM as VRAM and will dynamically allocate what it needs, it will allocate more than 512MB if necessary.  The discrete GPU has its own dedicated GPU, in your case limited to 512MB.  Both should work with Photoshop, but CS6 and hence CC require 512MB minimum.
I'm running a 2009 MBP with the nVidia 9500m + 9600m GT and it runs Photoshop CS6 fine.  256 MB VRAM.  But I'm not running Photoshop 3D - is that what you are using?
