Just upgraded to 10.6.8, now Mail won't work.

Hi, I'm hoping one of you can help me. I just upgraded my MacPro to 10.6.8, and most of my apps (that I've tried, anyway) seem to be working OK, except my Mail program, for some reason, will not accept any new incoming mail from the server. My printer didn't want to work until I reinstalled the printer software, but I'm at a loss as to what to do with the Mail program, as there's nothing to reinstall for it. I've gone into the Preferences and everything seems to look good there. Seems to me I had this same kind of problem last time I upgraded, to 10.5, but I can't remember what I ended up doing to fix it at that time. Any help I can get from anyone will be gratefully appreciated.

If you moved the mail Application outside the protection of the Applications folder, it will no longer function after this update:
Mac OS X v10.6: "You can't use this version of Mail…" alert after installing Security Update 2012-004
Mail.app is a very common target of malware. Mail must remain in the protected Applications folder, not outside where it can be hacked.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.
    Identifying iPod models
    iPod touch (3rd generation)
iPod touch (3rd generation) features a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display and 32 GB or 64 GB flash drive. You can browse the web with Safari and watch YouTube videos with Wi-Fi. You can also search, preview, and buy songs from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on iPod touch.
The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.
You also said: "It also will not let me download any music onto it." What happens when you try to sync music to the iPod?

  • I upgraded to OS 10.9 and now mail won't work

I upgraded to the new OS 10.9 and now my mail won't work.  Any suggestions?

How are you trying to access gmail? Are you using their web mail page at www.gmail.com? Or using the Apple Mail application? Or something else?
If you are trying to use the web mail, what browser are you using? Does the failure occur when you try to load the initial page, or after you try to log in?
Let us know, we will keep working with you.

  • Upgraded to 10.6.8 now Mail won't search

The top right search box in Mail does not seem to work after the latest upgrade to 10.6.8. It seems to work sometimes but I can't figure out why sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. For instance, I can search for "Bob" in my Inbox folder and it will pull up all messages from Bob. But if I search for "Bob" in my Sent folder it shows 0 found even though there are hundreds of messages there. It is not folder specific though. I can search for a subject or sender name (which I know is there) in my Inbox folder or All Mailboxes and also provides 0 results. Although, to thorougly confuse me some searches do produce results. Could there be some threshold of results that prevents some search results from displaying? Can't imagine that's it as some searches will return over 500 results and the ones that don't show would not have that many returns.
I believe this is a bug that was introduced in my last OS upgrade. Any ideas?

Ernie, thank you very much. I followed the reindexing and that may have helped, however I believe I found the problem and it was a PEBKAC issue. Total brain fade on my part.
When I was performing a search I did not have "Entire Message" selected for the results. I had the "From" selected. I don't typicaly click off of the entire message option, and since I don't typically use that feature didn't even think to look at the most obvious, right in front of me option. Feeling super intelligent.
    I appreciate your help.

  • Trying to add hotmail, now mail won't work.

    Hello,
I downloaded the http plug-in so that I could access my hotmail in my mail app.
    Now I have several problems...
-I followed the instructions (knowing I did it right because my boyfriend did it the same way 5 minutes before and it worked just fine) and my hotmail messages will not show up in mail...No matter how long I wait.
-When I open mail from my applications folder, or from my dock, the black triangle shows up under the icon (how it usually indicates an open program) but a window does not open. I have to go to file>new viewer window in order to get a window to show up (This did not happen before...I used to simply click on Mail on the dock and a window opened).
-When I try to navigate around mail, I get the spinning ball, and then mail freezes and I have to force quit. For example, I try to access mail>preferences (to see if I can figure out if the problem is with some setting), but it continually freezes.
    So here are my qustions:
1)What do I do to get mail running properly again?
2)Can I delete the plug-ins that I downloaded? They downloaded to my desktop, I deleted the icons from my desktop...Would they also be lurking in some folder that I am not aware of?
3)Can I delete the set up for my hotmail account in Mail (So that I can start from scratch)?
4)Can someone tell me how to successfully access my hotmail account using mail?
I know that new hotmail accounts apparently do not work in mail. However my account was created in 2000. So I don't think this can be the problem.
Please help...This is driving my craaaaaaaaaazy!

    Hi,
    Thank-you. Your answer was helpful.
I did what you said and managed to restore the Mail application and get it up and running again without freezing. What a relief!
I tried again to download and install the plug-in.
When I download the 1.49 version. I run into the same problem again. Mail starts freezing. And if I click on file, the "add account" option is not highlighted/darkened...For some reason I can't access it. I tried trashing my preferences at this point to see if that would solve the freezing, and allow me to proceed and add an account. But that didn't seem to help.
I followed your steps again, deleted everything, trashed the preference file again, and started from scratch. This time I downloaded and installed the 1.48 version. Downloads and installs great. But I click on "add account" and http does not show up in the list for me to choose.
I have tried manually installing, and using the installer. I have also tried running it in Rosetta, which was suggested on the discussion forums for similar problems.
I am frustrated because it doesn't seem like it is a problem with adding my hotmail account. If it was just a matter of it not allowing me to do so (because of the hotmail restrictions) that's one thing. But before I even try to add the account I am running into problems. Almost like it is just the plug-in in and of itself causing the difficulty.
I don't know if you, or anyone else has any other suggestions. I appreciate you getting me back to where I was originally anyway.
    Thanks!

  • Mac crashed, now mail won't work properly

I had a big crash last night and after several hours manged to get up and running. The problem now is that when I try to launch mail I get the "Welcome to mail in Tiger" and it attempts to import my messages (which I didn't attempt to move in the first place). When I hit continue it seems to atempt to start the import saying their are over 2600 messages to import, but then immediately stops and shuts mail down. What am I doing wrong here? Everything was working fine before the crash.
    G4 Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Reinstalling won't restore your data, regardless of whether you reinstall the whole system or just the Mail application. If you have no backup and the contents of HOME/Library/Mail/ have really vanished, there is nothing you can do to restore your mail data. What I don't understand is why Mail crashes upon start up if there is nothing in the Mail folder...
Did you repair the disk after the crash? I'm not talking about repairing permissions here, but rather about repairing the disk itself. If you did, and Mail still crashes after moving the com.apple.mail.plist file out of the HOME/Library/Preferences/ folder, post the relevant part of the crash report here, so I can try to figure out why Mail is crashing.
In order to do that, open /Applications/Utilities/Console, choose View > Show Log List, expand ~/Library/Logs, then CrashReporter, and select Mail.crash.log. The latest crash report should appear at the bottom of that file. Look for a line that begins with "Date/Time:" as close to the bottom as possible, and another that says "Thread N Crashed:", where N is a number. Select everything from the "Date/Time:" line to the lines immediately following "Thread N Crashed:". Copy that text and paste it here. Do not post the whole crash log, just the relevant lines. See the following two threads for examples of what a crash report looks like (the second has extra unnecessary information):

  • New iMac, migrated from macbook and now mail won't work. Tried re-installing operating system, still doesn't work. Can anyone help me to get mail working? thanks

I just bought a new iMac and I thought that it would be simple to migrate from my MacBook.
I have a time machine back-up so I decided to migrate using that. Everything seemed to instal pretty well with the exception of mail.  To begin with I had 2 mail icons, then I started to read some forums and checked that i had the one I wanted in the applications folder, deleted the other and then downloaded the new operating system.  Mail had to be force quit first and even when the download was complete Mail still wouldn't open or run. The only thing I can do is compose a new message, but I can't see my inbox at all.
It's really frustrating and I would love to know in a simple step by step guide how to get mail up and running with my existing migrated emails in it.
If anyone can give me some advice that would be great.
    thanks in advance.
    H

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    First, empty the Trash.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "41." Please post it in a reply.

  • I upgraded to M lion and now ical won't work

I just downloaded Mountain lion to upgrade from snow leopard and when I tried to open my calendar, a window pops up and says "You can't open the application "calendar" because powerPC applications are no longer supported."
    Any advice?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
It looks like the upgrade didn't go well because Calendar is damaged. First, I recommend you to reinstall OS X 10.8.2 > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1581
If it doesn't work, reinstall OS X Mountain Lion. Hold Command and R keys while your Mac is starting and reinstall OS X. As Mountain Lion has to be downloaded again, this may take hours

  • New internet provider, now mail won't work

I recently moved to a new city and have switched from Sympatico as my internet provider, to Eastlink. Since the switch I cannot send mail from the Mail program.
Neither one of my email accounts is a sympatico based account (one is gmail, one is a work address with a smaller provider), but I'm wondering if the switch could be the issue since I've never had problems before. I have run a connection doctor and the only account the comes up with a problem is the W3 Connex service provider, both the gmail outgoing and incoming mail server claimed to be working fine (but still I cannot send msg with this address).
Do I need to set up my SMPT server to correspond with my new service provider or with the email providers? This is really frustrating as I cannot send anything with my work address and have to log on to Gmail's web page to send anything with that address...
What the **** is going on?

For every new internet provider, if you want unauthenticated e-mail sending you usually must use the internet provider's own SMTP server. Most internet service providers these days don't allow third party SMTP servers without some form of authentical and/or special port addressing. If you have a particular sendmail server you want to use regardless of your location, check with the owner of that server whether they use port 587 or 2626 and use e-mail address and your e-mail password to do password authentication into that server. That will allow you to use it anywhere. The primary reason they do this is to avoid being blamed for spam.

  • I just updated to mountain lion and now pandora won't work, videos won't work, i can't access my iTunes.... the list goes on. HELP!

    pandora
    itunes
    hulu
any vidoes.... says pop up blocked
somehow I can't change any of my security preferences
    SUPER FRUSTRATING

So what happens if you go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General? Are you able to go there at all? If you are able to go there, can you unlock the preferences using the lock in the lower left and your login name and password?
If you are able to do this, can you change the "Allow applications downloaded from:" to Anywhere?
    Best of luck.

  • Just installed Lightroom 4.4 and now Lightroom won't open.

I have been working with Lr 4.3 and just upgraded to 4.4. Now Lr won't open when I click on the icon. How do I fix this?

I have copied this from another post I made in the forum see if helps you.
When Lightroom is open it creates a file with the same name as the catalog with an extension .lock (LOCK) alongside the catalog file.
This lock file prevents any other access to the catalog.
If Lightroom is closed normally the .lock file is automatically deleted. However if Lightroom closes unexpectedly e.g. loss of power, crash then the file may remain in place preventing Lightroom from opening the catalog.
With Lightroom closed go to the folder where your Catalog files reside, by default this is in your User > My Pictures> Lightroom. If there is a .lock file present delete the file (do not delete the .lrcat file. See the screen capture.
If you have found a .lock file and deleted it, then double click on the actual Catalog file and see if it opens Lightroom.

I have just upgraded to the icloud and now I am getting an error message on ical - saying "make sure the URL is correct", I haven't changed anything so why is it now an issue? any ideas?
The full message sasy "The calendar https:// cal.me.com:8443/principas/users/(server number) was not found on the server.  Make sure the URL is correct.

10.6.8 cannot access iCloud's facilities - you can set Mail up manually and there is a hack which some people have used to sync calendars (see below) - you cannot sync any other type of data.
This is the situation with iCloud and Snow Leopard:
Your email, calendars, and 'Find my iPhone' will be migrated to iCloud. Contacts and Bookmarks cannot be migrated from a Snow Leopard Mac.
Your iDisk, together with website hosting and Gallery, will continue to work as before until next June.
Syncing of Dashboard Widgets, Dock Items and Keychains between Macs, and Mail Accounts, Mail Rules, System Preferences, Signatures & Smart Mailboxes between Macs & iOS devices, will cease altogether.
You will be able to access email and calendars on the iCloud website at http://icloud.com provided your browser is reasonably up-to-date.
You will not be able to sync contacts or bookmarks from a pre-Lion Mac.
You will be able to enter the server settings for email manually in the Mail application and access your email.
You will not be able to sync your calendars directly.
Some people have been able to set up calendar syncing by using the method detailed here - this is an unsupported hack and may not be reliable, and may stop working at some future point.  BusyCal is an iCal-like calendar application with extra facilities: it can sync with the iCloud Calendar while running on Leopard, Snow Leopard or Lion.
There appears to be no method of syncing contacts (though Address Book on a Mac can be synced with Google or Yahoo address books - I don't know how reliable this is).
