Just upgraded to Maverick, now iPhoto library needs to be upgraded. Can I safely do this without losing my photos?

I didn't do any backups before upgrading to Maverick...

Well do a back up now.
Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

  • "the iPhoto library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto." WHAT?

Ran software update a few weeks back and now I cannot seem to open iPhoto or access files within.
The error message as soon as I open up iPhoto reads: "the iPhoto library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto."
What do I do to overcome this?  What happens to the files in "UPGRADE?"
Should I be worried about the safety of the files during upgrade?

Yes - you should always be worried about yoru files if they are important to you - never upgrade without backingup just in case (the normal case is no problem but you must be prepared)

  • I downloaded pictures to iphoto yesterday of my sister's Bat mitzvah, all of them are there except 10 of them are just caution signs. How do I fix this without losing the photos?

I downloaded pictures to iphoto yesterday of my sister's Bat mitzvah, all of them are there except 10 of them are just caution signs. How do I fix this without losing the photos?

The warning triangle means, that iPhoto has lost the connection between the thumbnails and the photos and cannot show them in the browser.
Rebuild the iPhoto library to reconnect the photos. What is your iPhoto version? If it is iPhoto '11 do the following:
    Back up your iPhoto library.
Hold down the command and option/ alt keys while double-clicking the iPhoto icon to launch iPhoto.
Keep holding down the keys until you are seeing the FirstAid panel.
Select "rebuild database" from the panel.
Does that bring your photos back?
If not, download iPhoto Library Manager and use the rebuild function.

  • Iphoto library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Will my Facebook albums remain?

I just upgraded my computer to yosemite and that includes the iPhoto application.
After opening iPhoto it says "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto." I'm worried that if I chose to upgrade I will 1. lose all my photos and 2. have my synced facebok albums taken off Facebook.
One time I moved my iPhoto library to an external hard drive and lost all my Facebook album photos so I don't want to make the same mistake.
So does anyone know if I chose to go through with this upgrade will I lose my photos in the iPhoto and the synced albums on Facebook? If I do lose photos, how do I go recover my previous iPhoto version?

Just to confirm. When I saved a copy of my iPhoto library on my external harddrive that's "backing-up" right?
Also, is there anyway on Facebook to tell which albums are synced with my iPhoto so that I know which ones will be gone if something does go wrong?
Sorry one more question Larry. I keep reading issues people are having with upgrading their iPhoto to 9.6 and the upgraded iPhoto does not recognize their library (see: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6676471). If this happens to me and I have to repair or re-install my iPhoto will my Facebook albums be affected?
Thanks for your help Larry I appreciate it

  • Can't open iphoto library needs to be upgraded

can't open iphoto a message window opens and asks to upgrade or quit   The message states that photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iphoto

Then you're going to have to upgrade.
Make a back up first, of course.

  • Iphoto library needs to be upgraded?

I replaced my hard drive, reinstalled 10.6, and used migration assistant to restore from Time Machine (and will never do that again). iPhoto itself works fine (when the library is set to be the 'new' empty library), but when I try to access my old iPhoto library, I get the message:
"The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto.
Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. . . "
If I click 'upgrade' it says "iphoto was unable to open this library" then closes.
I had 10.6 on my old hard drive, and 10.6 on my new one. Nothing should be different. I can see the individual photos by going to 'show package contents.'
    Thank you!

At this stage you do not have an iPhoto library - an iPhoto library is a special folder (called a package) that contains many elements - original photos, previews of modified photos, thumbnails and files describing to iPhoto what is there, what edits have been made, how to connect the dots so to speak - simply having a package named iPhoto library is not an iPhoto library and to get an iPhoto library from a Time machine Backup you have to use TM to restore the library - it is the only way to properly collect all of the correct elements and put the puzzle back together
    Your only alternatives are
1 - to use TM to restore the library (launch TM and go to the proper time, select the Photo library and click restore
    or
2 - go into the TM backup and find all of your original photos and copy them out and then create a new iPhoto library using iPhoto and importing the original photos

  • When i open iPhoto it says my photo library is unreadable and will not open. How can i fix this without losing my photos?

"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable... Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup."
How do i solve this problem? Dpes rebuilding your photo library delete all your photos? I have thousands of photos with no back up HELP!!

Well if you have no back up you need to make a back up now. It might be too late, but you're not going to know until you fix this.
    Then try:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Wife and I have shared iPhoto library that resides in a shared disc image on my MacMini HD. Works fine when logged in to my profile. In wife's profile, when opening iPhoto we get the message "the iPhoto library needs to be upgraded...".

    We're both on version 9.5.
I've verified the permissions and rebuilt the library.
If I select 'upgrade' the library will open but it clearly shouldn't be happening and it is inconvenient.
Thanks in advance for the help!

The most successful is using an external disk with ownership ignored

  • Photo library needs to be upgraded

Why do I get the iphoto library needs to be upgraded everytime I launch iphoto?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • My iphoto on my imac somehow updated on its own and now its saying "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto." have i lost my photos?

I tried to open my iphoto last night on my iMAC and it somehow updated on it's own and now has a message saying  "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete." I only have the option to quit or upgrade. What does this mean? Have i lost my pictures? i don't properly have my back up hard drive set up so all my pictures aren't backed up.

"The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete."
After your iPhoto application got updated to a new version, iPhoto will convert the iPhoto library to a new format, that is used by the new version. The warning tells you, that after this upgrade older iPhoto versions will no longer be able to read the iPhoto library. If you have a second Mac with older software that might be important. Make a backup to be on the safe side and let iPhoto upgrade the library.

  • All of my pictures from my iPhoto library are gone after upgrading to Mavericks

I just upgraded to Os X Mavericks and now all of my pictures are gone from my iPhoto library, and of course I am unable to access this version of iPhoto on OS X Mavericks.
I tried to find them using a different application or in Finder, and in both cases "iPhoto Library" is in Gray and no contents are available. My system memory doesn't seem to be reflecting the number of photos I have either.
If I go back to my old operating system will it work? If not, I have lost all my pictures since February of 2011. I have been crying nonstop for an hour trying to figure out what to do.

Open the App Store and upgrade iPhoto to the Mavericks version. Installing OS X does not do anything to your iPhoto Library.
The iWork apps are free with a new iOS device since 1 SEP 2013. They are free with a new Mac since 1 OCT 2013. They are also free with the upgrade to OS X Mavericks 10.9 if you had the previous version installed when you upgraded.

Is your Apple Intel-based, poppelmacbook?  If not, you should consider treating yourself to a new Mac. Last December I gave up my old because it just could not update...anything because it was not Intel-based.  Updating everything on this OS to 10.9 has been confusing for me, but I just could not work with that old Mac because the updates were too smart? for my 10.6.  It is upstairs now...for visiting family:  games, garage band, etc.--things I never did use.  Apple refurbished and purchase the extended warranty.  Apple loyalist since late 1980's.

  • The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto??

Just got this message after upgrading to Mavericks...
The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto.
Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete.
Is is ok to go ahead with this?
I have done a back up to my time machine but I am concerned when it says the library will not be readable by previous versions, what happens if I have to restore my Mac from the time machine, which would mean reverting back to Snow Leopard?

Well you have two choices - upgrade the iPhoto library and use it - or not upgreade it and stop using - the current version can not use older libraries so unless you upgrade the library to match the application version you can not use iPhoto
And as warned once you upgrade the libary then older versions will not be able to use it
