Just upgraded to Tiger 10.4

I just upgraded my software and in my attempt I had the hard drive wiped out to get better performance. I lost all of my music in my Itunes Library and I was thinking I could use my Ipod as a back up but when I tried importing the music back into Itunes it says that it's registered to another library which used to be on my computer. Is there anyway of saving all of this music on my Ipod and tranferring it to my new Itunes on Tiger?

Please help me iv just upgraded to tiger and now none of my programs will open they crash on start-up, and also when i restart i get a little box with a blue globe inside it. then it goes to the unhappy face in a folder icon, then eventually it starts up. Please help me im buggerd without the mac.

    Hi Andy!
What size is the Hard Drive, and how much space is avaialble?
How much RAM is installed, and is it original or added?
Did you use a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, to upgrade?
Did you do an Archive & Install, preserving User settings & preferences, installation, and if so, is the Previous System folder still on the HD?

  • Just upgraded from Tiger to Leopard. Mail is now hosed.

I just upgraded (Archive and Install) my G4 800mhz PowerMac laptop from Tiger (10.4.11) to Leopard 10.5.6 using a LeopardAssist (la232) to fool Leopard into thinking it was a faster Mac.
Mail opens but there is no mail. I see my two accounts and it looks like it carried my account names and passwords. But it doesn't show any e-mails and it shows zero signs of trying to get new e-mails. Any ideas?

Wow - were you just sitting there waiting for my post?
I can't find the plist files it is talking about. Is there a way to search for all *.plist files in Mac OS X? If there is I can't figure out how.
From the Finder's Go menu choose Go to Folder.
Go to this location (type or paste the tollowing, then click Go):
    ~/Library/Mail
Move the items named "MessageRules.plist" and "MessageRules.plist.backup" to another location, such as your desktop.
Note: If you previously upgraded from Mac OS X 10.3 to Mac OS X 10.5, the files will be named "MessageSorting.plist" and "MessageSorting.plist.backup".

  • Just upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard on a 2007 Macbook. MASSIVE speed boost. Why?

I'm just wondering, is there any way to tell exactly why a mac was slow before a system upgrade but fine again afterwards?
My old Tiger OS had got to the stage where Safari would bounce about 10 times before opening, remain unresponsive for minutes after that, when clicking the spotlight icon in the corner would produce a spinning beachball for ages, when the entire machine had turned into an incredibly slow piece of junk.
I upgraded to Snow Leopard last night and it's as fast pretty much as it was when I first bought it. Have 2GB of RAM, 30GB free disk space, etc.
What caused the massive speed boost? Should I now assume that there was some sort of mismatch in my old OS installation or something, some out of date extensions or files which were causing it to slow down?
I know a new OS brings a speed boost, but this is so dramatic I can only assume some sort of gigantic error was fixed when I upgraded. Any way to know exactly what?

OSX directory structures get a little wierd over time (thus the "Repair Disk" item under DU which many people need for very minor fixes).
Also some of your system files may have been living on hard disk sectors that were questionable, and the upgrade process forced enough of a re-evaluation of disk sectors to find good ones.
Either way, I would just say "Thank you, Santa", and move on.
<Following OSXFreak> ... Or maybe I know nothing about Tiger ... which is very likely.

  • FCP-just upgraded to tiger and FCP Studio-reports 'Missing FW connection".

I just finished upgrading 3 computers to OS 10.4.7 and FCP Studio, then installed all the obvious updates.
The first 2 computers, a G5 and G4, had no problems seeing and capturing video via FW.
The last computer, my primary workhorse, cannot find the tape device, a DSR 20. Upon clicking 'continue', to finish loading FCP, in A/V settings, the system reports the Apple FW is "missing". I've switched out the cable, then the tape devices, I've rebooted and thrown prefrence and plist files... etc...
Here's a weird thing, the controller in the log and capture window works fine to control the deck, but it won't pass or capture the video.
I'm getting ready to reinstall everything. Anybody have an opinion?
    Thank you,

Often in upgrading the OS, QT or FCP for some odd reason QT will get knocked slightly off kilter. The usual solution it to force a full reinstall of QT.
    This is how:
Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
    Run the Quicktime installer.
Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
    Reboot
    Good luck.

  • I just upgraded from Tiger to Leopard and had to download Firefox 9.0.1 again. There's no way to organize bookmarks like there was before. How do I delete a bookmark or change a bookmark's position in the queue?

    I have an iMac.

"Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks" has been renamed to "Show All Bookmarks" in Firefox 4 and later.

  • Just upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard - slow slow slow

macbook has slowed - molasses in winter slow.
slow to switch aps, slow to save, aps freezing requiring force quit.
have 1Gb ram and plenty disk space - 15Gb+

Snow Leopard should work fine on your system. First, if you're still at 10.3, install the 10.6.8 combo update from: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399 . Use Disk Utility to repair permissions, then install the combo update, then repair permissions again.
Next, you have 15GB empty hard drive space ... you want 10% to 15%+ free for systems usage. If it's below 10%, then you need to free up space, otherwise the system will crawl.
Download Smart Utility from http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php . It will give you insight into the health of your hard drive.
Run the Apple hardware test to see if there are any obvious hardware issues. Find the original OS X disks, and insert the one that says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Reboot holding the alt/option key down (might work holding the D key down too), choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted choose the extended test. While in the extended test, you might push command and L to make it loop several times. Sometimes hardware issues don't show up on one run.

  • Upgraded to Tiger - Inbox is gone!

I just upgraded to Tiger last week (10.4.6) and went in to email again for the first time today to respond to some messages. The entire inbox was offline! (Hundreds of messages). When I clicked on one, the message that came up was: "...You need to take this account online in order to download it." But I was already online!
So I googled and found the following apple support page: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25812
Which recommended that I "rebuild". So I did it. But now while my sent and drafts are fully online, my inbox only has 16 messages in it (all of which are now online.) I have tried Importing Mailbox - but no matter what Inbox folder I choose, it seems to not be able to find any mailboxes to import. I'm desperate!!! Any help would be much appreciated!
    powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Thanks, beatleny, for finding that post for me . Apparently, I didn't save that mailbox cleanup procedure on my computer when I wrote it. I've saved it now (after slightly modifying it) so that I'll be able to easily reuse it in other cases.
Hadn't you found that thread, Allan would have provided a similar procedure to fix your problem. Actually, I initially learned about how to do this by reading Allan's and Ernie's posts on similar topics.
Since the other thread ended up becoming a bit messy, I'll post the procedure here for reference:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. Create a folder on the Desktop and name it however you wish (e.g. Inbox-Old). It doesn't need to have an .mbox extension.
    3. In the Finder, go to HOME/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/.
    4. Move the mbox file to the Inbox-Old folder just created on the Desktop. This file contains all the messages that were in the mailbox before the upgrade to Tiger (maybe even some messages that had been deleted).
    5. Move any strangely-named Messages-XXXXXX folder to the Desktop (not into the Inbox-Old folder). These are temporary folders created during an import process. Mail should automatically delete them when done. Their presence is a clear indication that something didn't work as expected. These folders are to be deleted after fixing the problem, but should be kept somewhere until then, in case they contain messages that are neither in Messages proper nor in the mbox file.
    6. Move everything else within INBOX.mbox, except the Messages folder, to the Trash.
The result of the above should be that INBOX.mbox contains the Messages folder only, and the Inbox-Old folder on the Desktop contains the mbox file only. Now, proceed as follows:
    7. Open Mail.
    8. The account's Inbox should properly display in Mail as many messages as *.emlx files are in HOME/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/. If that's not the case, select the mailbox in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.
    9. In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Other as the data format, and follow the instructions to import the Inbox-Old folder that's on the Desktop. Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move to the account's Inbox the messages that Mail failed to convert properly, and delete those that did get through and, hence, are duplicates now.
The following collection of AppleScripts has a Remove Duplicates script that can be useful for removing duplicate messages:
    http://homepage.mac.com/aamann/Mail_Scripts.html
If all is well and you're not missing anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.

  • Upgraded to Tiger and suddenly lost 512MB of RAM....

I have a very odd situation. I have a 1.5Ghz 15'' Titanium Powerbook that came with 1GB of RAM. I bought it about a year and a half ago. I just upgraded to Tiger a few days ago and I have noticed that my computer is running slower. It was weird to me that the new operating system made my computer run slower so I checked my RAM. I went to "About This Mac" under the Apple icon and it now tells me that I only have 512 ram on my computer. I am wondering how this could be possible that it isn't recognizing the rest of my RAM. I know for a FACT my computer had a Gig of ram.
    Thanks for the help!

Hi, J. Stone. If your computer has a 1.5GHz processor, it's Aluminum, not Titanium, and you need to repost in the Aluminum forums.
Successive versions of OS X have gotten fussier and fussier about RAM meeting the letter of Apple's specifications. If it doesn't meet those specs to a "T", it disappears. I don't know what other Albook owners are likely to tell you about RAM compatibility problems on your model (your RAM is quite different from that used in the Tibooks), but if one of your two RAM modules was purchased from a third-party source rather than from Apple, now is the time to check the warranty that was provided with it. Is Mac OS X compatibility guaranteed "for life", as is often the case with RAM? Some third-party RAM vendors will replace modules that "go bad" after OS updates or upgrades.
If all your RAM was bought directly from Apple, you have a good case for replacement, as long as your warranty hasn't run its course already.

  • Iphoto not responding after upgrade to Tiger

I've just upgraded to Tiger. When I try to open iphoto, nothing happens. I get the iphoto screen, with an indication at the bottom that there are 3100 pictures within the program. But the little working wheel just keeps spinning. When I open the program holding the Option key I get a "library not found" message. In answer to the query, I instruct the program to find the library and it locates the "iphoto library" in user/pictures/. But when I click to "open" that library I again get the eternally spinning working wheel and the "force quit applications" screen tells me that Iphoto is not responding. Can anyone help?

    Alain
Welcome to Discussions. Other Mac users are here to help.
There are procedures you should follow before and after an install. I will also list some other things to do if that doesn't work.
Please do not try to do anything to the database itself - the iPhoto Library Folder in your Pictures Folder.
Most likely because of updates or installs you need to:
    1. Restart your computer to repair the directory if needed.
    2. Run "Repair Permissions" from Disk Utility located in your Applications>Utilties Folder.
    3. Try iPhoto again. If it doesn't work then QUIT iPhoto.
    4. Your iPhoto preferences file may be corrupted.
(MAKE SURE you QUIT iPhoto first)
You will find it in your Home directory:
    (Home/your account) >Library>Preferences>com.apple.iPhoto.plist
Remove or trash the preference (.plist file) and restart iPhoto.
iPhoto will open like it was the first time
If it still doesn't work go on to these remedies, in order.
    5. Bad Album data?
    Old Toad says:
1 - move the Albums folder and the AlbumData.xml file from the iPhoto library folder in your Pictures folder to the desktop.
2 - launch iPhoto. It if launches successfully you probably have a corrupt album.
To locate the bad "apple", pun intended, do the following:
1 - move one of the individual album folders and it's associated data file into the new Albums folder that was created in the iPhoto Library folder.
2 - launch iPhoto. If it's successful do the same with the next album folder and data file. If iPhoto doesn't launch successfully, that's a bad one and remove it and the data file.
3 - repeat for each individual album folder in the old Albums folder.
    6. Rebuild Library
    QUIT IPHOTO FIRST
Relaunch while holding down the key combination below for your version
    Option+Shift IPHOTO 2
    CommandOptionShift IPHOTO 4
    Command+Option IPHOTO 5

  • Logic Express 9 Crashes after Snow Leopard Upgrade from Tiger

    Hi Cris,
These might be Obvious and things you have already done... But...
Since doing the Upgrade... Have you Run Software Update... Repaired Permissions and Restarted...?
Also how did you Put Logic on... From the Original Install Discs...?
And, I'm not sure... But Logic Express maybe expecting to see iLife Installed...
    Cheers,

  • Should I upgrade to tiger or leopard?

I am currently running 10.3.9 on my G5. I have no issues with the system, other than the ipod I just bought requires 10.4.8 or higher. I need to upgrade, so do I go with tiger or leopard? I know it's my decision, but I would like input from other more experienced mac users. I don't want to end up with a lot of problems with my computer; I don't know much about fixing them. I mostly use my computer for music, pictures, and the internet. Is it in my best interest to just upgrade to tiger to avoid as many problems as possible, or should I buy leopard since the two cost the same? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

There are already a lot of legal, retail Tiger DVDs on eBay and Craigslist, at dramatically reduced prices. Since these are fully legal copies, that would be an easy way to upgrade to Tiger 10.4.10 for $50 or so....

  • Upgrade to Tiger, Safari won't work... Help.!!!

I just upgraded to Tiger from Panther. Safari no longer works... I am not computer savvy and I can't figure out what to do. I know it is not my connection because I.E. is working fine,, although a few sites said I was Forbidden. What?? Please Help! I am running on an imac G5.

    Lily's Mom:
    Questions:
    1. Do you have internet apps SpeedDownload, iGetter, PithHelmet, Acid Search, Safari Enhancer ? Or Norton or Virex? Sometimes non-apple internet apps need updating or uninstalling. If you do, let us know which ones and which version, please.
    2. Do you have one of the new iMac Intel Duo's?
In the meanwhile, do these, OK?
    Have you done these?
    1. Empty your cache & History settings via the Safari menu
    2. Trash your Icons Folder:
    HD>Users>Home>YourName>Library>Safari -->Icons
Restart Safari and a new folder will be automatically regenerated.
(This folder saves favicons of all the sites you visit. Needs cleaning periodically -- or you can change that file's preferences to "Read Only"
rather than "Read & Write." This will keep it from growing in size.)
    3. Launch Font Book and check all fonts for duplicates. A duplicated font will have a bullet beside the font family and you can resolve duplicates by selecting the font and at the menu bar, go to Edit > Resolve Duplicates.
Do this for each font with a bullet next to it.
    If you're still having problems:
    4. Shut down your computer . . . unplug the computer, modem, and router, if you have one. Let everything sit for 2-3 minutes. Plug everything back in, start up your modem & router, then restart your computer.
    Hope this helps

  • Aargh! Just upgraded to Logic Studio and can't run Mainstage!

I just upgraded to Tiger and to Logic Studio. I know that my pitiful machine needs to go to someone else who doesn't use these apps, but I'm a working joe! I read the minimum requirements for LP8 and just met them. I guess I should'nt have assumed that mainstage couldn't require more assets than LP8! Anyhow it says that Mainstage needs: 1280 x 800 resolution, Open GL?, & 64MB VRAM. Does anyone know any hacks to get around these requirements, and would it crash the system? Also what is OpenGL anyhow?
    -Thanks

You didn't mention what machine you have, but the requirements for MainStage are:
    - Mac OS 10.4.9 with QuickTime 7.1.5 or later
    - at least 900MB RAM
    - 1024x768 screen resolution
    - and a reasonably new graphics card
There is no way to hack around these, because they are requirements. However 1280x800 is not required, but highly recommended (hence the warning at launch time), but if the graphics card is not compatible (too old), there is nothing you can do about it! All machines that are described on the box are compatible with MainStage. The machine is probably also too slow for MainStage anyway.

  • ITunes,Safari look weird after upgrade to Tiger

I just upgraded to Tiger with a clean erase and install. Repaired permissions before and after. Ran software update and did same. Everything seems to be working at this point, although its too early to tell, except that when I launch iTunes or Safari I no longer see the blue and white list backround. Instead I have a white panel behind my Bookmarks list when displayed, iTunes library etc. I have tried zapping pram and reinstalling, removed all but the factory ram and repeated. I have nothing attached to the computer other than the keyboard, mouse and monitor and I have installed no software other than Apple's. No problems of any kind before the upgrade. Ideas?

Ran my eye one calibrator to reset the monitor.
