Just using part of a song?

I've been watching the tutorials on how to place background music on to my imovie but I cant work out how to select just a part of a song and place it with the correct photo or video clip. Can anyone help?

There may be a simpler way, but I use Audacity which is a very good and comprehensive programme that you can download for nothing to edit music. Just import & choose the section of music you want and the length to suit the video clip and then export it to Itunes from where you can import to iMovie. That may be an over-simplification, because you may have to play around with Audacity a little if you are not familiar with it, but like all these things a little patience and trial and error should get you there.

Is there any way that I can use segments from different songs from my iTunes in my movie?

Two ways to do this.
1) Drag the track from the music browser into the project pane. Drop it on the frame where you want it to start. It will appear as a ribbon beneath the video clips. You can drag the left "handle" of the ribbon to the right to shorten the clip from the beginning. You can drag the right "handle" of the ribbon to the left to shorten the audio clip from the end.
2) You can also drag audio into the background rather than on a specific video frame. This method works for either way. You will see a tiny gear icon at the top left of your audio track. Click it and select "Clip Trimmer". You can trim the audio clip and then click Done.

I'm using the latest iMovie on my iphone.
I'm trying to make a videos for my instagram account(15 sec)
I'm trying to add a song that is 3 minutes as a foreground/Background, my doubt is that i don't want to use the entire song, i just want to use a part(15sec) that comes in the middle of the song.
Right now when I add a song as BG/FG it starts from the beginning of the song as default. I intuitively tried dragging the song until I got to the exact position of the riff that I wanted to use for my video. But it didn't work.
The Spark app and the Fly app allows me to exactly pin point the place that I should use as the beginning and the end of the audio.
Is there a way to do this?

I'm quiet aware of how to "Adjust the duration of an audio clip." which can be done after importing the audio file into the project. But what I could not do is just select the part of the audio clip even before importing or merging it into the project.
Restating my problem :
I have a 15 sec video and I have 3 Min song, all I need to do is add just a 15 sec guitar riff that comes from 2:10 to 2:25 (time) into the project.
I could not just select the 15 sec audio part even before importing ( Many of the 3rd party apps does it)
I could only import the entire song, but I could not adjust the the 3 min audio file to start from the the afore mentioned time.

Is there a way that I can use only parts of songs that I have on iTunes for my slideshow?

Not without editing the actual music file.
If you want to make a slideshow where you can fade and xfade the soundtrack you need an app that has more fine control than iPhoto: iMovie, might do it.

It's difficult to compare these apps. They have differences in capability - some are driven off templates. some aren't. Some have a wider variety of transitions. Others will have excellent audio controls. It's worth checking them out to see what meets your needs.
However, there is no doubt that Final Cut Express is the most capable app of them all. You get what you pay for.

Like taking 1 minute of 1 song, 1 minute of a second song, 1 minute of a 3rd song and so on and then just let one play after the other on you ipod? Is something like that possible with I-tunes? Thanks for your help!

I ended up smashing my phone and could update all other stuff on restore but cant sync any music. It is all grey at the top of the screen. Ive re installed itunes and cleared all phone data. I'm having a similar problem. I had previously (over a year ago) purchased 2 episodes of Law & Order. Then about 2 months ago, I purchased the 3rd season of Sons of Anarchy. When I downloaded these episodes to my iPad, about a dozen full seasons of various shows popped up, too. No money was removed from my iTunes account & theses particular shows aren't in my iTunes library on my desktop. I've tried every which way to delete them from my ipad, but can't. I went to the Apple store & they suggested I contact expresslane.apple.com for help. I submitted my problem, via email Friday, as they asked, but have not received any response. Can I transpose only part of a song?

I need to lower the key of a song that's part of a medley. The first two parts are fine, so I don't need to lower the whole thing. Is there a way that I can just lower part of the song?

You have to think of three different levels where you apply transposition
1) MIDI Event
You can just transpose individual MIDI Events bu dragging them up or down
2) Region
Select one or multiple Regions and use the Transpose Slider in the Inspector of the Audio or MIDI Editor. The Region Header in the Workspace (Tracks Area) will indicate the transpose number with a number (see the screenshot)
3) All Tracks
Apply Transposition to all Tracks with the Transposition Track by setting up the Transposition Curve, the section along the timeline that is transposed.
One important thing to keep in mind is that specific Regions (imported Audio FIles or Audio Files with Flex disabled) ignore the Transpose command and can't be transposed that way.
You can find more on all those transpose topics with a detailed explanation of the Flex Mode in my book "GarageBand X - How it Works"
In this screenshot, I transposed the Audio Region (+2) and the MIDI Region (+4). In addition I setup the Tranposition curve to transpose the Verse by +5 semitones and then go down -2 (not that this would make any sense musically).

Using only part of a song in iMovie?

I've been using iMovie for a while and it's great but one thing I haven't been able to figure out yet is an easy way to use just a portion of a song.
I want to use about six or seven different songs in my iMovie project, but only use certain parts of those songs (a 20 second portion in the middle of the song for example). I don't see any way to "trim" audio like you can with video or to specify to iMovie "only play from 1:20 to 1:50 in this audio track".
What I have been doing is cutting the portion of the song in QuickTime Player 7 and exporting as a new MP3, but there's gotta be an easier way than that I hope?

Now it's Wednesday (2 days since I originally posted) & my iPhone appears to have finally restored all my apps, but it still says it's restoring from iCloud backup. If all my apps are restored, what else could it be restoring? IS it actually restoring anything at this point, or is it still in 'glitch' mode??? I've tried turning it off & back on & it continues to say that it's restoring.

If you do get 3G, you only use cellular when wifi is not available. You pay by the month for a 3/4G plan.

I need to put three parts together. I tried adding duplicates of the song to the list but if If I change the start time on one it will change it on all of them.

In your library, right-click the song you want to edit.
select "get info".
go to "options" and select the start and stop times for your first section of the song.
click "OK".
Find the shortened version of the song in your library. It may take a minute for it to show up. right click it again and select "create (????) version". (the ???? is different for different formats).
The library will spit out a new, second version of the song which you can rename. I suggest you use the original title and add a 1 to the end.
Now you can go back to the other version and repeat the process with a different start/stop time.
Once you are done editing, you can burn all of your versions to a disk, just make sure your interval time is zero so there are no gaps between edits.
To keep the orginal song on your library, just go back to the original and put the start/stop times back to the original settings.

Is it possible to save part of a song in Garageband?

I am just wondering if there is a way to save part of a song in Garageband. I used some arrangements to a song I'm using. I labeled one part, "Part 1," the next part, "Part 2," the next part, "Part 3," etc.
I want to save each part individually. I want to save Part 1 in one file, Part 2 in another file, Part 3 in another file, etc. Is this possible? And, if it is, how can I do that?

Do you mean "save as different GarageBand project" or as "song"? You can export any part of your song individually using the cycle region. When the cycle region is active, only that part of the song marked with the yellow cycle bar will be saved to an audio file or exported to iTunes.
