Just want to make sure I've gotten this right

I have become a converted Windows user. I now have both a Desktop and a Laptop Mac. Love them.
Really want to convert from Windows Mobile to the Iphone BUTTTT I need to see if I missed something first.
Are these really Missing In Action (MIA)?
1. Bluetooth support for Itunes without a dongle?
2. Copy, cut, paste?
3. Multimedia Messaging?
Did I miss something here?
Super interface - but without these 3, challenged considering the wide spread implementation of EVDO vs ATT 3G.
Help????

I understand your concerns.
But I don't understand #1 "Bluetooth support for Itunes without a dongle?" . Do you mean a dongle to get bluetooth to send music to your headphones? ie Stereo Bluetooth (A2DP)?
My answer is that you would have to buy a third party headphone set including a bluetooth "dongle" aka "adapter". http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/08/09/iphone-gets-stereo-with-infinixx-blueto oth-a2dp-adapter/
2. Coming from the Treo: missing copy cut paste is a real bummer. Lets hope for that to come in a free software update.
3. MMS: I email my photos. But a swedish company is working on an App that will allow MMS.
#3 brings about the most important factor on the iphone for missing feature gripes. If Apple didn't include it then check the App Store for a free or usually cheap (under $10) solution.
I have yet to meet someone that once they switched to the iPhone, switched back.

  • I want to make sure I am doing this right...

So when I activate my phone, I can transfer my previous stuff like contacts, photos, etc, by backing up my previous iPhone. I then "restore from backup" once my new iPhone is activated and charged? Is that correct?

Although contacts are included with your iPhone's backup, contacts are designed to be synced with a supported address book application on your computer. Not a good idea to depend on your iPhone's backup, your iPhone, or any cell phone alone for this data, which can be lost or stolen.
Photos in your iPhone's Camera Roll are also included with your iPhone's backup, but photos in your iPhone's Camera Roll should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera. When there are photos in your iPhone's Camera Roll, your iPhone is also detected as a digital camera when connected to your computer.
This link provides the data that is included with your iPhone's backup.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
After your iPhone is activated, you will be prompted to transfer the backup for your previous iPhone, or set up the iPhone 4 as a new iPhone or don't transfer the backup for your previous iPhone. Either way must be followed by a sync to transfer your selections under the various tabs for your iPhone sync preferences from your computer to the iPhone.

Call the apple store you got it from and ask them. Sometimes in the past they've extended the 'no questions asked return' but only Apple can tell you for sure.

  • I need to delete all my pictures off of my iPhone because I have run out of storage.  I have downloaded all pics to my mac but is my entire camera roll backed up on iCloud as well? I just want to make sure before I delete them from the phone.

I need to delete all my photos off my iphone because I have run out of local storage.  I have synced with my Mac but also wanted online backup.  Are all my photos from the camera roll uploaded to iCloud?  I just want to make sure I can retrieve them after I erase from the phone and in case my Mac crashes.

Import photos through iPhoto. (You will prompt to delete from iPhone when import competes).
Backup your Mac. (At least the iPhoto Library)
    Backup to iTunes.
Backup to iCloud. (Check in Settings>iCloud>Storage and Backup>Manage Storage>your device name>Camera Roll ON).

There is no such thing as "good" or "average" usage.
Does the battery life meet your needs, if it does, dont' worry about it.
If it doesn't, a search of the forums will reveal dozens if not hundreds of postings about battery life.

  • "C" drive & Profile crash-so all attachments are in crashed profile? Just want to make sure?

1-had C drive crash a few days ago and am rebuilding on new C drive > NEW copy of TB 24.6.0
2-Had Local Folders on a separate drive > in Tools – Account Settings – Local Folders > set to previous location
3-After studying many support responses is it correct that the actual attachments are still in the Profile on the crashed "C" drive?
4-Searched all drives on "new" system and found no "Profile" or "*.mbox" files - where are they?
Just want to make sure cause the mozmsgs/wdseml on the "separate drive" only have message text when imported. If this is TRUE then I've got to focus my effort on recovering the Profile from the crashed disk. Yes, I did not have a backup - my bad for sure.
    Thank you,
    Tom

In Thunderbird, messages are stored as they are received, along with all headers and all attachments.
In your profile, there will be folders with no extension, such as ''Inbox''. These are mailbox files. Each has an accompanying index file, in this example ''Inbox.msf''. You don't need the msf files.
The profile folder is hidden, so to find it you'll need to enable displaying of hidden files.
mozmsgs is provided just to make the message contents available to Windows' searching mechanisms, so these files are not important to your restoration task.
I really don't like the business of setting mail account folder locations using the Local Directory option. It removes the particular folder from your profile and makes maintenance very much harder, since now only ''you'' will know where the re-located data lives. None of the usual techniques or tools for working with profiles will work with the detached data.

I'm getting a MacBook pro for college and just wondered how to transfer/share everything from my desktop pc to my Mac?

home sharing will work but won't transfer playcounts, ratings, and original "date added".

  • I just want to make sure.....

I know little to none about how computers work. And now mine does not. I called a shop and it's big money just to look at it. I asked a friend and he says there is no hope. I have a Satellite A/135 S2386 Series Toshiba laptop.  I got an error message that the display driver was not working and then it would work again. Then the next time I turned the laptop on...the hard disk drive light does not come on and I get nothing. The power light is on, the on/off light is on, the battery light is on...the wireless indicator light won't come on.
So here's the question. Is my hard drive damanged and is it time to get another laptop?
I feel I am submitting my question to the brain trust. Any advice you will offer, I will greatly appreciate.

it sounds like it is more than just your hdd. thats an easy fix. since your problems are on and off and all over the place i would think it may be the motherboard going bad. you can try to do a system restore and see if that will help. hold down zero (above P) during boot and see if it will let you do the recovery. you can try to order recovery media here. and try that but this may not help if it is the motherboard and in that case it will be cheaper to just buy a new one.

  • I see another unsecured wifi network on my list. As I have recently changed routers etc. I just want to make sure it's not attached to me. It has a different IP address than the secured wifi network I have now set up.

I see another unsecured wifi network (D Link)  on my list. As I have recently replaced an old modem router (D link) with a new fancy one (wireless gateway), I am wondering if this is somehow still attached to my computer. The D link wifi unsecured network has a different IP address than my newly formed secure wifi network's IP address.
Also - if I turn my wifi off (regardless of if I am on the dlink or my new secured wifi) I can still watch netflix etc. on my tv from living room which tells me the the wifi is still on. Why is this so?
Does my Mac have two IP addresses or is that D link someone elses?
THank you to anyone who can straighten me out on this as I am confused.

    Thanks Tony,
Believe it or not, I had already done that - that is why I was confused as I kept seeing it in the wireless networks that I was seeing even though I had deleted it in my advanced Network of Systems Preferences. I thought if it were mine it would go away, but alas it didn't.  Anyway, all is well and I can now relax that everything is secure thanks all to you.
    Cheers

  • HT201272 I accidently downloaded an app? I just want to make sure I wont be charged on my credit card

I accidently downloaded an app? It said it was free but it asked for the 3 security digits on the back of my credit card. Will I be charged for it???

You won't be charged for downloading a free app.
But as you changed your card's details by adding the security code, you may receive a small temporary store holding charge ($1 or approx equivalent) to check that the card details are correct and valid and that it's registered to exactly the same name and address as on your iTunes account - it should disappear off your account within a few days or so (though with the weekend coming up it may take an extra day or two).

  • Just want to make sure FIOS VDSL is as bad as it seems

So, long story short, part of the allure of the new apartment I moved into was that it had "FIOS". I should've done my homework. Ohhh how I should have. This is my first experience with VDSL as a technology. I didn't know Verizon did this kind of thing, and I now see why they steer clear of it whenever possible.
I have the most bare bones cable channel package, and 30/5 VDSL. And it's still running me 90 dollars a month. For 30/5. For connection speeds I used to be excited about........8 years ago. The kicker? Even if I wasn't getting punched in the face by paying double the price for half the speed, the VDSL service works nowhere NEAR advertised. First, the first hop to ANY node is 40+ ping. Second, out of that 30 advertised, I get about 5-10 from a speedtest server less than 5 miles from me (D.C. area).
Once I found out what VDSL was, I knew things might get a bit sketchy, but I never dreamed it possible to pay 90 dollars for a service this worthless. As far as I'm concerned, Comcast is literally Satan incarnate, but I'm seriously considering selling my soul to them all over again. I've always taken solace in the fact that I could usually get FIOS or RCN instead of the big C, but this time, it doesn't appear to be an option.
Sorry, rant over. Has anyone else had horrible experiences with VDSL?

So I am in the very same boat.  Moved from a new apartment buidling with fiber to my apartment to an old condo.  I think they should call this Fake Fios.  So I have this VDSL modem now and a Quantum Router (the later a waste of money, I think, at $10/mo.  )   I wonder if I could plug in my old Netgear router and save $10/month?
I actually was getting 29 down and 4.9 up.  But unfortunately, within a day of install, the VDSL modem started loosing sync intermittently,  Seem to go in spurts.  Everything works fine for 30-40 minutes, the sync light starts flashing for 1-2 minutes then it comes back. During the loss of synch, of course I have no internet.  It is almost as if there is noise on the copper pair between my apartment and the telco closet on my floor.  I have not opened a ticket yet because I had to go out of town for 10 days the day after install. Will call it in when I get back.
Another oh-by-the way.   There is only one coax between the central closet and my rental condo.  So if you use it for Fios TV, you can't use the building's over the air master antenna feed for the bedroom.
I got a good deal on the condo. But will not rent a old place again.  Got really spoiled by the 80/80 up/down in my old place.
I will go without internet and TV before I use Comcast.  The worst customer service on the planet. Thank God their merger with TWC was nixed.

  • Want to check if Iv'e got this right:  PC External Drive    PC Mac

    Hi,
I'm going to attempt something and I just want to make sure I'm doing it right (I've searched the forums and this is what I've come up with).
I have an iPod formatted to a Windows XP computer and all my iTunes on that computer.
    STEP 1:
I want to move my entire iTunes library off the C drive and onto an external hard drive (I'm out of space on my computer and will erase the library from the C drive once the transfer is done, leaving the library only in the external drive).
I assume this is what I need to do?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748
I've read in the forums that sometimes there are problems with the iPod recognizing/synching to the new drive -- but I'm assuming if I follow the procedures in that tutorial then any problems I have can be fixed (i.e., By transferring in that way I'm NOT doing any permenant damage to my library, filelists, labels, etc.) -- correct?
I just want to check this before I do Step 1.
    STEP 2
About 6 months from now I expect to get a new computer, and I expect it to be a Mac. I would want to transfer all my music to the Mac and discard my current PC. There's lots of stuff on the board about doing this. E.g.,
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93367
My one question now -- which is probably a silly one -- is this: Is the fact that all my music will need to be transferred from my PC's external hard drive (as opposed to the internal C drive) cause any significant additional problems? I think the answer is no but I just want to make sure.
Any clarification you can give on this would be appreciated. Thanks.
    iPod   Windows XP Pro

Thanks. I've got one related one.
Let's say I copy everything to my external hard drive but -- for the time being -- still leave the original on my c drive. Is there a way to test that the iTunes is working off of the external drive?
In other words, before erasing the songs on the C drive, can I do this and check to see that iTunes works with the external, the iPod interfaces with the external, etc. And then when I'm sure, erase the stuff on the C drive?
If so, how do I go about verifying this?
By the way, all of these songs are in mp3 format.
    thanks,
