Just what is getting backed up?

There was a time when I didn't need an external drive just for my iTunes library. It passed several weeks ago.
I bought a 500GB external drive and moved my iTunes content there, via a firewire connection initially.
Then there was a reconditioned AirportExtreme available from Apple, so I bought it. (Yes I had considered a Time Capsule at the onset. Yes I read a lot of reviews. No, I don't think I want to own that particular device).
So now my Time Machine question:
Is my external drive, still listed by its original name via the AirPort Extreme, backing up with Time Machine?
I'd assume not, much as I'd like it too. That said if I look in Time Machine's preference pane, then click options, I see "Total Included: 159.1 GB". About the cumulative total of my internal drive and the media storage across the room in "Kind: Mac Server" land.
Entering Time Machine I can see that drive but not select it. That leads me to believe its not included in the backups. What's the unaccounted for 100+GB's getting backed up then?

The drive in question was connected for a time as a FW drive, It was also removed from the exclusion list. I know it was backing up then. The drive has now been moved to a USB connection on the AirPort Extreme.
I have been using TM since October when I got this Mac.
This morning, "Total Included" lists 110GB less than it did last night.
Time Machine took a few days to modify that amount. That's what confused me.
I had assumed the drive wasn't in the backups but the skewed "Total Included" number didn't make sense.

  • Exactly what is getting backed up ?

Time Capsule seems to be working fine after initial set up and I can see my files remotely when I go into Time Machine on my mac.
However, when I look at OPen Time Machine Preferences>Options I see my 'Filevault' protected drive in the 'do not backup' section - it states that it is 178GB - not sure how this can be as my laptop is only 120Gb?
confused. I like to understand whats happening and be sure that all of my files are getting backed up.

Yes, I'd like to know how I can confirm what has been backed up on my Time Capsule, as well. I'm assuming the following does this:
    1) Open the Time Machine Preferences pane and confirm that, say, XX amount of GB of storage space have been used.
    2) Mount the Time Machine disk image on the desktop and go folder diving as you would with an external. By the way, this can be a little time consuming since its response times fall far short of a fire wire on a Lacie, for example. Big folder or, say, a big iPhoto library can take a minute to report on the GBs used.
    3) And/or folder dive via Time Machine's "black hole" display, as above.
Doing this has 80% convinced me that the Time Capsule sitting on my desk (looking rather like an over-sized Rennie tablet) has indeed got my life's work; my most treasured images of parents and children and God knows what else safely in its custody. But I'm probably too trusting, eh?
Any confirmation of the above and/or further wisdoms gratefully received.

  • Can't get back into os x after os 9 boot.

I've never booted into os 9 on my old imac g3, so I decided to try it. After i selected os 9 as the startup disk and restarted, it showed up as a floppy disk with a question mark installed. I guessed something isn't installed right. I don't really care about os 9 now, i'm just trying to get back into os 10.4 tiger. I've tried holding the option key during restart, and it only shows a refresh button, macintosh hd in the middle, and an arrow pointing toward the right. The refresh doesn't do anything, and the arrow takes me back to the floppy disk with the question mark. Can anybody help me boot back into os x??? Thanks.

Sometimes you can call Apple and get replacemebt disks reasonably with your Serial# handy!
Tough without a Tiger Disk, but try fsck...
To use fsck, you must run it from the command line. Unlike using your mouse to open an application to do something, you'll need to type a text command at the prompt (#) to tell fsck what to do. The Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities) and single-user mode are two examples of command-line interfaces in which you can type such commands. To use fsck:
    1. Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line. Hold CMD+s keys down at bootup.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
    2. At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
    3. Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:
** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***

Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
    4. When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), off the HD & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.

  • How do I get back my Acrobat X that came with CS6?

Hello, I own the Creative Suite CS6, which comes with Acrobat X.
I must have hit an update button, because now I have Acrobat XI installed on my computer, and every time I want to use Acrobat, it keeps telling me I have to buy it!
After spending thousands of dollars on CS6 already, I just want to get back my copy of Acrobat X and not have to spend any more money.
Has anyone experienced this issue and any solutions?

    Hi Diane,
So, was the issue resolved? Did the installation completed successfully and are you able to use the product?
    Regards,
    Rahul

Just bought brand new new iMac. When browsing in Safari, sometimes the text suddenly gets super large. I'm doing nothing except reading the screen, tho I usually have my hand resting lightly on the mouse. I can get back to normal size by clicking "actual size" in View. But then it does it again a minute or two later. What gives? Something seems defective--but what?

From System Preferences, Mouse, Point & Click, Secondary click.  Go to it hover over Secondary click and watch the short video sequence change it left right, left right, you will see exactly what is does. No I do not think your Mouse is defective, you simply need to take control of your Mouse finger.

Why did you delete the hard drive?   If you delete the contents of the Macintosh HD you have no system to boot into.  That's what the flashing folder/? means.  What system were you using before deleting everyting.
You're going to have to install a system on the HD before you can boot.

  • I had just got my ipod back the newest generation and i disabled it because i haven't had it in awhile. I also do not have the primary computer i synced it on so now i cant get on at all. I don't have much money to go to the professionals. What to do?

I just got my iPod back it about a week ago. It's been about 5 months? I don't have the computer I first synced it on due to the fact the whole thing just broke on me. So I can't restore it that way. On top of that I don't remember any type of passcode/word I had it's just been awhile. I don't have much money to go to Apple if they do charge me to reset it...really I don't have money at all to pay for anything like that. Is there any other way I could reset the whole iPod and start over? Can anyone help me?

    Disabled
Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

What exactly are you referring to?   Are the menus or templates for Pages in a different language?  Does something strange appear on the screen when you type?
Could you perhaps use the Camera icon here to post a screenshot of what you are seeing?
To make sure you have the right keyboard, go to system preferences/language & text/input sources and make sure that only the box for US or British is checked (and that the box for French or German or anything else is not checked).

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know some details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is you library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

  • When I purchased my Mac six months ago, I transferred my Quicken data to Quicken Essentials which has worked well for me until yesterday.  Now Quicken Essentials will not open the data file.  What happened?  How do I get back in?

When I purchased my Mac six months ago, I transferred my Quicken files to Quicken Essentials.  That worked fine until yesterday.  Now I'm getting messages that there is not application to open the files, or that it just plain can't open the file.  What gives here?  What happened?  How can I get back in?

Launch the Quicken application and try to open the file from there, if you haven't already. If that fails, and a simple restart of the computer doesn't help, try reinstalling the application. If that doesn't cure the problem, I would suggest you take this up in the Quicken Community:
    https://qlc.intuit.com/app/full_page
    or with Quicken support:
    https://quicken.custhelp.com/app/contact/plvl1/win
You'll be most likely to get further help with your issue there.
