Having enough experience in .net and Java ( 12 + years) , need Justification to pursue a carrier in MDM - How rewarding is MDM in terms of average salary/remuneration over a period of 0 - 5 years. Are the projects usually long term or short term like XI.

Tuple Record deleted in MDM does not reflect in ECC

Hello Experts,
We have a scenario for central creation of Material master data in SAP MDM 7.1 and syndication to SAP ECC system. We are using tuples for Long text & Alternate unit of measure.
The problem is as below:
If we create a material with 1 or more tuple records for Long text & Alternate unit of measure and syndicate it, it gets created in the SAP ECC system properly.
If we add 1 more a tuple record it gets updated successfully.
But if we delete a record from the tuple for same material and save and syndicate it, it does not get updated in the SAP ECC system.
Please help!

Or is there some other thing amiss?
Can you please revert with whether this Tuple node Property is required or not in MDM syndicator. I mean in MDM Syndicator-->under Destination Items Tab, Property Required is Ticked in Check box or not.
As I am able to figure it out that this may be one reason, If this is not ticked in check-box then this tuple node will not generate if it does not have any values. I mean in case if you delete tuple record in MDM a file will get syndicated out of MDM without these Tuple nodes. Thus would not able to pass Null to target side structure of IDOC and therefore your Tuple record is not getting deleted in SAP ECC system.(R/3 side). So please make sure that this Tuple nodes must be generated even if it carries blank values (nothing) in syndication files so that you can map with required target structure of ECC IDOC to pass these blank values.

MDM 2.0 - OCI mapping of field "Price Information"

Hi SDN,
we are on SRM 5.0.
we are setting up MDM 2.0. We do a new installation, although we were already on MDM 1.0. Anyway, we want to keep the repository from MDM 1.0.
Right now we have problems transferring the price of shopping cart positions from the MDM Web Search UI to EBP.
what we did so far:
1. set up j2ee server and oracle
2. set up MDM 2.0 Server
3. Deploy MDM 2.0 SP 2.0 Java API and UI stuff to j2ee
4. set MDM 1.0 Repository in the appropriate place in the file system of MDM Server and unarchived it in the MDM console
5. run repository upgrade using link from upgrade guide (http://<j2eeserver>:50000/webdynpro/dispatcher/sap.com/tcmdmsrmcat~uiutil/Utilities)
6. upgrade configuration (same link as before, but step 2)
still, in the OCI Mapping for price, I still have "price - amount" mapped on NEW_ITEM-PRICE
and still, the price, which I can see in the search UI, is not being transferred to EBP...
I am not sure, if I have to have "Price Information - amount" available as OCI mapping field. Right now, this is NOT the case. In MDM 1.0 it used to work fine with "Price - amount"
In my repository in table cataloge items I have the field "Price Information" which is a qualified lookup table, based on look up table "Price". "Price" contains the field amount, which carries the price value.

just another brief status Q:
Now I am able to receive the price in EBP.
But this is a workaround. Just for a test I did a new OCI mapping like this:
I leave the OCI field NEW_ITEM-PRICE blank and use instead
NEW_ITEM-CUST_FIELD4 --> mapped on --> Price Information - Amount.
Thus I am able to get the value of the price field in my BADI bbp_catalog_transfer.
There seems to be a mismatch of field types. In the MDM Console the amount field is of type 'currency' - I assume this is decimal in fact.
In my incoming structure in the BADI I have tabletype catalog_content which is based on structure BBP_WS_OCI_ITEM_S which carries field price of type DEC... seems reasonable to me - but in the debugger I can't see the incoming price value. Instead now I use BBP_WS_OCI_ITEM_S-CUST_FIELD4 which is of type CHAR20. This works! I regard this as a workaround and I am still researching to get the price field mapped correctly to the proper price field in my BADI.

I set up in SPRO the MDM Catalog and also checked "use error log" for the catalog - still
I wonder how I can access this log and esp the OCI fields -- can you guide me there?
I was clicking through the entries of SLG1 but don't get to see the OCI fields of the transfer, though an entry which is because of the data transfer from mdm towards EBP.

Technologies related to Sap MDM

Hi folks
I need a suggestion from an experienced guy.
Right now am with Sap MDM technology since 9 months...earlier am in Java
As i want to continue my carrer in SAP.and i feel just a plain MDM is not suffient..as i dont find any requirement on only MDM
Can anyone suggest me what other technologies to be learnt in relative with MDM such that i can get good carreer in Sap.
Points will be given to each suggestion.

In a Technolgy like MDM it is very essential to be Technofunctional rather than just technical
It is definitely very helpful and useful to have knowledge of all the netweaver components that integrate with MDM ,but it is even more important to have a sound knowledge on the functional side of mdm like
Material Functional
Customer Functional
Vendor Functional etc
Data related activities like data migartion
Taking up a course or certification on these topics will be time consuming as well as expensive.
And a in depth knowledge o these topics is also difficult to attain and not needed as well.So i basic but clear idea in theses areas will be defnitely fruitful.

MDM is quite an old concept though the tools or applications to tackle them are quite new to the market . It is currently pursued by both technical & functional people as there is lot of traction in the market. The market adoption seems to be on the rise just by looking at the number of visitors to this forum & the product releases by SAP & other major vendors.
If the question is to learn MDM then you would require some elementary knowledge of the masters - like customer,vendor,material,article,etc, some data modeling skills, MDM application knowledge & integration fundamentals. Though it would require some functional knowledge as to the way masters are handled & scenarios being dealt with , emphasis is more on acquiring technical skills & gathering application knowledge.
Future looks good at the way MDM market is shaping up.

SRM MDM with Multiple Repositories and required S&A.

Hello everyone,
We are in the planning process to migrate from CCM to MDM. Our current environment has two separate customers running on two separate SAP clients in SRM 5.0 using the internal CCM (one SAP SRM instance, 2 separate SAP clients).
In MDM it seems the concept of SAP client does not exist but the concept of an MDM Repository. I was thinking that by creating two dfifferent repositories (one for each customer) it would substitue the concept of the internal CCM on each SAP client.
Can we have one MDM system with two separate repositories one for each of the existing customers with the required S&A?
That is, customer A will logon to MDM to maintain only A's repository. Customer A must not be allowed to access B's repository and viceversa.
Also, Repository A would be published only for users using SRM system under SAP Client A, and Repository B would be published only for users using SRM system under SAP Client B.
The intention is that each customer will have their own electronic catalog.

The answer to your question is yes, it is possible to have one MDM system with two separate repositories one for each of the existing customers (that intend to have different electronic catalogs).
In fact, I think this would be the best way to separate: 1. data sets, 2. access.
1. Each MDM repository carries its own data set (like SAP client)
2. Each MDM repository has its own security (users/passwords, roles, etc.)
Another consideration (relates to point 1) is bringing data from SAP client (e.g. product master, contracts). Since you have two different SAP clients, managing replicated data from both of them in one MDM repository would be a form of suicide.
You can have multiple repositories on one MDM server. A common case is when you have a staging (master) repository, and a production (slave) repository. The slave repository is what you show to searching end users; the master repository is for data loads. You synchronize the slave repository with any changes from the master at such time when you're sure the master is good to publish.

Maintaining the MDM ID on the target systems

I understand that maintaining the MDM Id on the target helps in better traceability. But is it absolutely necessary to maintain MDM Id on target systems? this would require identifying an additional field on all the target systems.This will be quite challenging some times and would require business justification if we plan to use an existing field for a different purpose. Can you pls help me with all the conditions or reasons that you have come across that makes it an absolute necessity.

When ever MDM is been used for consolidation and Deduplication purpose of Master Data a Global ID is assigned to the merged records to identify them as possible duplicates by the target system.But when this Global id is send to the target sytem it will have to be accomodated on the receiveing end which is not possible in most cases:
Below are the Few Scenario where and how can the Global ID be accomodated:
- BI-MDM: One of the major areas where Master data management is required is for BI reporting without MDM is place Bi will be reporting on inconsistent data which will result in wrong reports and thus wrong business decisions So Master data are first filtered out in MDM and then passed to BI for correct reporting in this case. If we are using BI 7 then we have a MDM-BI package that needs to be deployed on BI By doing this an Additionla Field is generated in BI which handles the Global Id send from MDm without much difficulty so this justification is sufficient as the receipient system has provision to handle it.This can also be taken care when working with BI3.5

- R/3/ECC- MDM:This is the second Major area where MDM is used for consolidation and harmonization of master data,but in this case ERP system has no provision to take care of the global id field as that would require modifying the std tables and fields in ECc which are not desirable.In this case i would suggest that MDM be used for inding duplicates howeevr the deuplictaes rec need not be merged and send back rather just be marked as duplicates to notify that thaey ar similar rec and then the care be taken to handle them in ECC iself.
- SRM-MDM etc:In most other scenario besides the two mentioned above MDM is used for data enrichment such as RPCM(Rich product catalog managemnet) where matching and merging is not the prime focus.
It is important to note that although MDM is primarily used for finding duplictaes it has many other functionlaities which it can perform like ensure Data completeness,Data accuracy,Enrichment,Governance etc

Quite frankly, if you have to ask such an open-ended
kind of 'question' here, which pretty much shows you
have no research abilities, you're looking int the
wrong career for you.warnerja I think you're being a bit harsh in your response. Back when most of us started Java it was a much narrower field. Now there is everything from Java Mobile, Java Desktop, EJB, web services, etc, etc. It can be quite daunting to get started.
I'd suggest two approaches.
1. Go to monster.com or some other carrer site. Take a look at the "Java" careers and figure out what's required. You'll see thinks like Websphere, and EJB and UML, etc. Start doing research on each of these and try to determine what background you need to use these tools effectively.
2. Take a basic course in java. Get certified and work your way up the certification tree as your interest leads you.
In either event, as duffymo suggests, Java is a family of technologies/tools that is a means to an end. It doesn't replace a fundamental understanding of the information systems domain you will be working in.

Error while opening MDM Data Manager

Hi,
We are getting the following error while trying to open Data manager on our repository.
"Error Initializing Attributes for table Taxonomy
Application will exit
Already exists"
mds Version 5.5.42.90
MDM DataManager Ver5.5.42.90
The repository loads without any errors. The server log file too doesnt show any errors.
Is there anyway to fix this?

Go to your MDM console, Login to repository and Unload repository first.
Then load with Update Indices.
This problem comes when you change anything in schema in console and then load repository with immediate option.
So always prefer to use update indices as accelator files will get updated and data comes from actual database.
If the problem still persists then Go again to console and check your repository for any fatal error. if errors come then repair repository and if not come then also repair.
Then load with update indices.

What are the corresponding Data Types of some MDM Data Types

Hi Guys,
The MDM ABAP API involves creation of a DDIC structure in SRM. This structure should have the same fields with the MDM table fields. We would like to ask the corresponding ABAP Data Types for the following MDM Data Types.
MDM SRM
1. Look up (flat)
2. Look up (taxonomy)
3. Look up (heirarchy)
4. Look up (qualified flat look up)

Error in starting MDM Server from MDM Console

Hi,
I have installed SAP MDM 5.5 SP05 on Windows 2003 Server.
When i try to start the MDM Server (i.e. MDM Service) from the MDM console it gives me the following error:
<i>Error Starting apmdmd(MDM Server): The machine 'apmdmd' is not Windows-based. The MDM server cannot be started from this application; please use CLIX on the machine instead. </i>
But if i start the MDM Service manually and then mount the server, it works fine.

It sounds to me like a problem potentially with either the permissions of the Windows user or perhaps a software firewall. The Console uses a low-level Windows API function to determine if the target machine on which MDS is installed is Windows-based. This function may be blocked by some OS or firewall-level setting. This may be the case even if you are able to use the same client machine to connect to the target machine via the Service Control Manager and start MDS from there.
I would like to help with this problem, but I need to know a few more things:
When the problem occurs, is the Console running on the same Windows machine as MDS?
You mentioned Windows 2003 Server... when you run the Console on this machine, are you logged in as an Administrator of the machine? And do you still get the error when you attempt to start MDS from within the Console?
Once MDS is started, and you mount it within the Console, are you having any other problems, such as logging in to a repository, or viewing logs?
Is there a firewall installed on the machine or machines that the software is installed on? We may have to review the settings of the firewall, or try temporarily disabling it (on both ends, or at least on the machine running MDS), to see if the problem goes away -- then we'll know the problem is with the firewall settings.
CLIX is a fine workaround if you can use it, but clearly this problem needs to be rectified.

Can not Upload PDF in MDM data repository

Hi, expert,
when I upload the PDF in MDM data manager, the system error log is :
Unable to open Adobe Acrobat.
See your administrator about installing Adobe Acrobat.
But, when I upload the image, the status is success..
I do not know if it is Adobe Acrobat installing problem or I miss some configuration or it can not upload the PDF into MDM repository..

Reg..Not able to transfer items form MDM to SRM(Procurement System)

We are implementing SRM5.0 with SRM-MDM2.0.
We have done all the initial level settings in SRM-MDM2.0, and able to add items in shopping cart and view the shopping cart through web, but the moment we click on "Transfer Items" the next screen display the following error message
(404 not found. The request resource doesnt found)
Though we have enter all the details in SRM > Master Data> Define Web Application Server Call Structure area and maintained the Catalog Id in the Org Structure Attributes link too.
But still we are facing the same problem.
Note-: Please help me once we create catalog in MDM how these catalog to be used by SRM users, what are the importent settings/configuration required for the same.

Not able to retrieve and insert the value to Home_country filed in MDM

I am new to the JAVA API,
I have creted one application in webdynpro using the JAVA API. I am able to search the data based on "Firstname" "Lastname" and "Email address".
I need to basically two functionalities
1) Search
2) Insertion of new records

But searching based on the Country is not able to do it.
we have two tables .
1) Country table> Contains all the list of the country codes and County name.
2) People table > Contains the country filed. So for this filed lookup table is country. also this country filed is drop down not have opton edit in the MDM.
I am sending the following used for searching the records based on the First Name and country.
But based on the first name it is working fine but Country it is giving some code like "R100" "R12". It is not givng the actual name of the country.

InCountry . They have defined only two columns called.
1) ISO-2 Code
2) Country Name.

Like the above data we have 250 country names
So , I displaying all the country list in my interface and holding in the Array.
Ex: When the user chooses the Australia. When I pass directly as an "Australia" to
r1.setFieldValue(fields[9].getId(),new LookupValue(new RecordId("Australia"))). it is giving me error.
Then i try to pass the postion of the"Australia" in country table. Like if the Austrila is an 2 record. I am looping through my array and find the record position as "2".
I am passing as
r1.setFieldValue(fields[9].getId(),new LookupValue(new RecordId(2)));
It is inserting into the people database. But not an Australia. It is inserting as "Argentina".
When the record inserting in people table refering some table at the database level , that table called "A2i_16_TEXT" This contains three columns.
A2i_16_TEXT(columns)
1) Id
2) LangId
2) Field Id
4) TextField
Example Data
Id | LangId | Textfield
3       0            Australia
2       0            Argentina
4       0            United States Of America
As i am showing the above table for "Argentina" Id is "2". When i pass the 2 for inserting the country filed.Instead of inserting "Australia". It is inserting the "Argentina" by refering this table.
Through MDM API we are not able to access this " A2i_16_TEXT" table. Because it is maintaining at the db level to find the perticular id for the respective country before inserting in to the people table.
So kindly suggest me how to solve this problem. What i am doing in the code is correct or not.
