JVC camcorder and Quicktime

Hi guys, I have tried this question in Quicktime forum but I think the Pro's will have the answer for me, only 1 reply there.
I am considering buying a JVC GZMG50EK hard drive camcorder and need some help with the file format.
I have been told that when a file is downloaded to the Mac it needs to be converted through JVC software to open in Quicktime, is this correct?
I thought I could just click on the file and it would go through Quicktime as the default programme. Is it something to do with converting from mpeg2 to mpeg 4?
I have also read that there is a plug in which will enable quicktime to open mpeg2.
I am trying to keep workflow to a minimum and I am told that the JVC software takes 5 mins to convert a 16 second clip.
I am a pro stills photographer but have'nt got a clue about video!
Is this info correct?
Can anyone help before I buy?

you dont say why you want to buy a hard disc recording camcorder, it woould be an interesting and precarious choice.
this camera is a domestic product, it is not a professional quality camera, it would be a good purchase for home use to easily make DVD video's of your family events, without using tape.
the camera is designed to do the following:
record an event onto the hard drive then use the video files to make a DVD video disc so that it can be played on a DVD video player.
it uses video quality recordings exactly the same as DVD video, the hard drive records MPEG2 video which is what DVD video is. normally before making the DVD, DV video from tape has to be compressed and converted to MPEG 2 taking many times longer to encode than to play, this camera does it in real time while recording.
As DVD is a highly compressed format to be used as an end product it is not best suited for further editing
JVC has a technology alliance with Microsoft Windows based software, therefore the software will not work with a Mac. The camera is supplied with DVD authoring software, you will need a recent fast Windows XP based computer to make it run.
I have a professional JVC camera which has the ability to record to an onboard hard drive. I was offered the hard drive at a give away price so the dealer could use me as a test bed. I declined and went for tape to give me the quality and performance I need.
There should be a very good reason to choose a hard drive camera instead of tape to justify such a purpose.
It sounds as if you would be far better buying a mini DV tape based camcorder from JVC, theres lots to choose from.

  • Using My Digital Video Camcorder and Quicktime...any Help???

I recently purchased a digital camcorder that I am trying to get to work with my Mac. I also just purchased Quicktime 7.0.4 PRO which I am hoping can convert the files from my camcorder to a viewable Mac format.
I am using OSX 10.4.6. The camera is a DXG-305 and the software written for the camera is for PC only. When I connect the camera to my Mac I get a folder to pop up of whatever I have captured but it shows files that are in a .ASF format. When I click on the file to try to open it , it wants to open in Microsoft Windows. When I go into Quicktime PRO and under File try to "Open File"- the file does not even become highlighted or selectable? Is this a file that Quicktime PRO is not able to open? If not, is there anyway that I can convert this file to one that I can use on my Mac? Is it possible to upload from my camcorder via the included USB cable and convert directly through Quicktime PRO? I am looking for ANY solution to this dilemma? Thank you-
    John

Is this a file that Quicktime PRO is not able to open?
Yes. Your camera's native video format is MPEG-4 and appears to possibly be "muxed" with MP3 audio.
If not, is there anyway that I can convert this file to one that I can use on my Mac?
Try installing the free Flip4Mac component. Then try playing the .asf file in the QT Player.
Is it possible to upload from my camcorder via the included USB cable and convert directly through Quicktime PRO?
If your file plays using the Flip4Mac player component, you may then wish to consider purchasing full conversion codec which will allow you to export your DXG-305V files to any frame-to-frame synchronized QT compatible format in QTPro.
ADDED: Sorry about the duplication, too slow with my response.

  • Sony Camcorder and Quicktime

    Hi there,
Just got the Sony DCR SR-60, and i want to edit the clips from the camcorder using imovie and create DVDs out of the clips which i edit from imovies. Currently i can't do that cuz none of the application can read the mpeg clips from the camcorders. Will getting the quicktime pro enable my powerbook to convert to the format that i can eventually edit the clips and create dvds? thanks.
If getting the quicktime Pro still unable to read the clips from the SR-60, what do i have to get to allow me to enable me to be able to edit the clips and create DVD? i don't need anything fancy, just the basics...
    Shan

Will getting the quicktime pro enable my powerbook to convert to the format that i can eventually edit the clips and create dvds? No. QT Pro does not "add" any new codecs to the QT Player. What it does do is turn on features such as the saving and conversion of "fully supported" files which you can already view. Unfortunately, "muxed" files such as MPG (MPEG-1) and MPEG (MPEG-2, VOB, VRO, etc) are not "fully supported by QT. When converting MPG files, the audio is lost. The QT MPEG-2 component allows video data to be viewed but provides only limited support for audio playback and no audio conversion.
If getting the quicktime Pro still unable to read the clips from the SR-60, what do i have to get to allow me to enable me to be able to edit the clips and create DVD?I presonally recommend the purchase of the QT MPEG-2 component from Apple ($19.99) and using it in conjunction with MPEG Streamclip (free). Streamclip provides elementary editing features like trimming segments, cropping, scaling, adjusting brightness, contrast, saturation, and/or volume, etc. More importantly, it handles the Stereo AC3 audio used by your camera but not supported by QT. If full editing features are required and you haqve an editor like iMovie, then files can be converted to iMovie compatible DV files using the "Export to DV" file option. The same DV files (if edited sufficiently in Streamclip) can be dropped to iDVD directly for re-converstion back to MPEG-2 and burning to DVD.

  • JVC DR HD100 and quicktime into finalcut

I purchased a JVC DR HD100 Hard drive recorder which is the same as the Focus enhancements unit.
The formats from the unit are M2T and quicktime. Since Final cut doesn't edit M2T files I set up the unit to create Quicktime files. The catch is that the unit produces a tone in the audio track that resides in the 1k to 1.5k range or the frequency range of the human voice. The tone is fairly loud and if you run the unit right on the verge of clipping the noise disappears but that forces the use of the AGC which is unacceptable for professional purposes. This is a nightmare and I've been trying to get JVC and or Focus Enhancements to fix the problem. First there was a series of finger-pointing and after sending the unit to focus they told me there was nothing wrong that the unit functions properly. Eventually they both admitted there was a problem butsaid it was a finalcut problem. I'm still sitting here with an expensive device that is incapable of doing it's job. and no answer in site while I see advertising about this unit coupled with the JVC ProHD cameras and Finalcutstudio. Am I the only one having this problem or are there others being told the same story with no resolve in sight? I'd really like to know because there is far more power with a group than with each person trying to fight this battle. Does anyony have this unit? Do you have workaround for Finalcut and M2T files. Help

    Hi David:
I appreciate your suggestions but I have tried these. and the unit is the culprit. even JVC and Focus admit the problem but play it down. Streamclip as a work around takes far too long. About twelve hours for a three hour session. The whole idea is that it should be immediate. Clipwrap seems to be a faster solution. I should add that the M2T format does not suffer from this problem. I first used that and learned the hard way that three hours of HD footage takes 12 hours to re-encode using streamclip. That kills my workflow and makes the HDD unit moot. I can use tape and get a faster import than that. I use FCS with Finalcut 6.0.5 which is a newer version and originally JVC said that the problem didn't exist in 6.0.3 but a fellow FCS user was at 6.03 and it did the same thing. In addition when I import the files from the JVC DR HD100 I get a message in final cut asking me to re import or re encode the files as they are not optimized for final cut. This is a real mess! But thanks for you thoughts.

  • JVC Camcorder Question and Others....

    Hi,
I have a few questions... I have a JVC GZ-HD30U camcorder and everything works ok but I have a rather annoying issue and was wondering if there is a resolution. I can import around 15min at a time of video but every time I select too many clips my import errors out... Basically some of the video clips import fine and the rest say "error" in red and i get a message that there were XX amount of clips that imported fine and XX did not import?
Does anyone else have this issue with JVC? Any other camcorder?
I really take a lot of HD footage and need a reliable camcorder that I can use.. Can someone either help with the issue listed or suggest (without sending me the link of compatible camcorders on the apple site) a great camcorder? I am looking for someone that has had first hand experience of a camcorder they would suggest if there is no solution.
Lastly, I was also wondering if I could get a SD camcorder and use the built in SD card slot on my iMac to import instead of USB??? Has someone tried this?
    Thank you!

This is the way that I import all my camera footage to my macbook i.e. via the SD card slot.
Rather than look for the correct cable I just pop the card out of the camera and into my macbook.
Then I usually copy all the files into a folder on my desktop or an external HD then import what I want into iMovie when I am ready (iMovie: File > Import > Movies...).

  • Cannot find video on ipad that was transfered from jvc camcorder via everio sync app and wifi

Transfer of video file (MP4) from JVC camcorder by Everio Sync app and direct wi-fi from camera to iPad (latest model and IOS) apparently completed OK. However, I cannot find the video file on the iPad (not in "VIDEOS".    ??????

Are you really looking in the Videos App or are you looking in iTunes?
The videos app is the icon that looks like a blue clapperboard from a movie set.

  • JVC HD30 and FCP

    Hi All
I'm thinking about buying a HDV-camcorder and set my mind to the JVC HD30. But I can't find that on this list (http://shedworx.com/?q=volmac-cameras ) of models that seem to work good with a mac. Does anyone has experience with the combination of this camcorder and FCP or FCE?
Thank you very much in advance
    Arjen

Actually, it's XDcam Ex in a .mov wrapper.
+An out-of-the-box GY-HM700 can record to inexpensive SDHC cards (class 6 or faster) as Quicktime .MOV using the XDCAM EX codec at selectable bitrates of 19, 25 or 35Mbps. The Mpeg-2 encoder is JVC’s, the XDCAM EX codec is licensed from Sony, and the Quicktime wrapper is licensed from Apple.+

  • How can i get my mac book pro to recognize a JVC camcorder?

How can I get my mac book pro to recognize a JVC camcorder using a Sony CAMERA USB cord??

Gotta say thank you — again.  Sorry the posts were spread out over more than one location.    I'll check and see if Third Party Software is considered a "peripheral", maybe that would have been a better single thread choice?
Definitely news we can use and the reference link is appreciated.
OT ~ We keep becoming more and more aware of how easy it is to lose one's bearings when it comes to keeping up with info tech.  My husband and I are both official members of the geezer set and have been out of the work force for some years.  You really do pick up so much just by being in the environment where people are using things to get work done.  A couple of old MP3 players, PPC G5, and a vintage Inspiron 3800 that someone didn't want any more is about it.  No cell phone, no iPod, no iPad, no home wireless network, no streaming media.  Fixed income.  So we do with what we can as long as we can.  If we could get by without that Intel processor, we'd probably make do with what we've got.  On the other hand, we've really wanted a notebook for a very long time and have to admit that needing to upgrade to accomodate my husband's project is pretty much just the "reason" we need.  I really mean it when I say that we are beyond appreciative that users take the time to share info and patiently educate those of us who fall into the "slow tech" category.

  • MacBook Pro doesn't recognize JVC camcorder GR-X5E

    Hello
Does somebody know any kind of "adapter" for MacBook Pro with OS X 10.5.8 that makes the signals of my JVC camcorder GR-X5E readable?
    jvc.ch doesn't has a solution
    Thank's in advance!

I only used the USB cable to connect camera and MacBook, opened iMovie and waited until the icon would appear. It didn't. Also on the desktop nothing happend.
Therefore I asked jvc.ch and they said, that there was no possibility...

  • Satellite L300-243 to connect to JVC camcorder

Toshiba Satellite L300-243 was purchased primarily to use with Pinnacle 12 to do video editing.
My previous PC had a 4-4 firewall connection but there is no similar connection on laptop.
Do I use a 4 - USB lead to make the download from camcorder to laptop?
Or is there a different socket on laptop I need to use?
    Bob

    Hi
I assume the JVC camcorder supports the firewire interface and it was connected to the computer via firewire cable.
Unfortunately, it seems that Satellite L300-243 does not support the firewire port.
In your case you could purchase an Express card which contains firewire port.
Then you could connect the camcorder to the notebook.
    Cheers

  • Using mac with JVC camcorder

Hi! i'm new the the world of mac and have just bought a JVC GZ-MG330 camcorder, and am having trouble getting my new macbook to recognise and play the video files. Am i missing some download or something? There must be a way to do it since the instructions say how to save it to a mac. Is there some editing downloads i need or something?? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
    Thanks!!

Have a look at the thread at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1422086&tstart=26 batman's Frog.
The most promising answer there, from "baileybird", is:
"+have an IMAC Desktop 10.4.11 and yes the JVC GZ-MG330 does work with IMOVIE 08, just don't follow the JVC Manual+
+Connect the Camera to the PC as per their instructions+
+Select "Playback on PC" on the camera+
+Then an ICON will appear on the desktop called "EVERIO_HDD"+
+Then open IMOVIE 08 the software automatically attempts to import the files and you get a prompt on the screen to "IMPORT ALL" or the files you wish to import. Follow IMOVIE prompts from there - not the JVC brochure.+"
But there are some other suggestions, too.
    Cheers

  • Sony camcorder and imovie 6

I have a movie on my camcorder and i can get it to download into imovie. it shows up in DVD player. support had me download Mactheripper, i guess it ripper the video and automaticlly puts it in imovie. i can't figure out macthe ripper. i need help!!!!!! pam

    Oh, I see.
iMovie 6 can only import footage that is on miniDV tapes, not the disks or memory cards or hard drive camcorders. The video is probably MPEG 2 or 4, a compressed format that iMovie cannot read. If you want to use that type in iMovie, you need to convert it to DV format. Conversion may cause some loss of quality. You can use MPG Streamclip for the conversion. Whatever you do, do not put a mini disk into the disk drive of your Mac. It can get stuck and damage the drive, since the Mac is not designed to be used with these mini disks.
Here are some sites that address this.

I'm not very good with computers and am new to macs, my jvc camcorder won't import video to imovie. I plugged it in with the included USB cord that worked fine on my PC but it doesn't recongnize it when I plug it into my ibook G4 what do I have to do too get it to work?
    ibook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Camera Model# GR-D72U

    Hi!
You need a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire to import to imovie.
    It looks like this:Click Here
They are fairly inexpensive at any electronics store.

  • OS 10.6.8 idvd version 7.1.2 crash with JVC camcorder GZ-HM30BU

Has anyone had any difficulties with their idvd becoming non-usable?
I have a MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.8 using idvd 7.1.2 and have a JVC camcorder GZ-HM30BU transferring HD video files using a SDHC card.  After importing and editing using imovie, I share using media browser large (960x540).  I then create a new dvd using idvd (DVD-R 4.7 GB).  After the movie is finished burning the 1st copy ejects and then my macbook asks if I would like to create another dvd.  When I insert the new dvd, my macbook pro ejects the blank dvd and states "done" even though the copy was not made.  I must then select "cancel".  After that, I am no longer able to create dvds using my macbook without replacing the idvd application from my backup disc.  Has anyone had any difficulties with their idvd becoming non-usable?

thanks guys; but the problem is that iDVD does not want to burn a disk now from the original movie-project. i see the movie project on teh desktop and can launch it just fine - even play it through the iDVD application - but when i click burn, it asks for a disk (I insert a memorex DVD+RDL 8.5Gb 240 minute dual layer) and it ejects it a few seconds later. the IDVD progress bar still runs as though it is burning just fine - its progress drops from 18 minutes all the way to "less than a minute" and then it hangs. even if i insert a different memorex disk, it still doesn't start actually burning it. it only burned the very first memorex disk i inserted successfully. i have tried disk utility to burn from a .dmg file copy of the original successfully burned disk, but disk utility can't burn onto the memorex disk either. maybe something wrong with the super drive? thanks for your ideas.

  • JVC Cameras And FCE4E

    Hello yet again,
    Many thanks for everyones patience...
I've been told that FCE4 will not import directly from a JVC Camcorder, but rather one must first import from the camera to iMovie, then into FCE4. Is that correct?
    Many thanks again,
    Lyman

I'm having a similar problem. We shot video on a JVC-MG130U hard disk camera, then transfered the video to an external hard drive via USB. I can open the video in both iMovie and FCE4, but the image is very out of focus, while it is clearly in focus when viewed from the camera.
Anyone have an idea how to fix this? Thanks so much in advance!
