JVC DT-1710CG vs Sony BVM-A20F1U

Hi. I'm looking to purchase a color grading monitor. Usually I rent the Sony BVMA20 HD CRT but I am wondering if the JVC DT-V1710CG is good enough to grade with.
Has anyone here used the JVC monitor before? If so, how does it compare to the Sony?
Thanks.

  • Has anyone managed to output analog RGB to Sony BVM HD CRT?

We are working on conforming 2K full DI features. We need HD monitoring, so I tried to connect second output of ATI X1900XT to Sony HD BVM monitor with analog RGB and composite sync. I downloaded the demo of the application called "DisplayConfigX" from www.3dexpress.de
Now I have 800x600_50p signal on my BVM. And color works fine with that monitor. But, I need 1920x1080_50i or 48i signal to feed the BVM monitor. Has anybody used the BVM with color this way?
I also have Kona card, but since the readback performance of X1900XT doesn't suffice for realtime HD playback. It only does 12fps! So what to do for realtime HD monitoring?
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Well, "Force RGB" was supposed to help with speed, but since installing the ATI1900 in the G5 Quad (we need 2 machines to match, so replaced the NVidia) or perhaps since we started using ProRes, it doesn't work any more.
If real time is vital, check out the Matrox MXO - might suffice. But RGB to a BVM? SDI's a YCbCr thing... unless you go dual thru a Kona 3 perhaps...
12fps isn't bad compared with Final Touch!!
Personally I'm intrigued by NVidia's Quadro Plex boxes - massive capacity, high cost, so far PC and Solaris only, but if it turns Color into a virtual Pablo for a fraction of the cost, then we'll buy...

  • Sony or jvc ?

i am looking for a new camcorder i do not know what to choose
jvc mc500 or the sony hdc hc1
i want a camera that is easy with the mac and i want to put the movies i make
    on a dvd
who can make me choose ???

That's true, mini-DV is almost always better than Digital 8. That's why I found it hard to believe that they use the same digital recording (the codec). Plus, I have actually seen 3 chip cameras that were Digital 8, but I don't know how they compared to mini-DV. They should be at least better than single chip mini-DV though.

  • Can't Open DVD-R Created by Standalone Sony GX315

Sorry for the length but I wanted to be complete.
    I am running a PB G4 1.33 17" with 10.4.3, QT 7.0.4 and the MPEG2.
I recently purchased a Sony Standalone DVD Recorder GX315 to replace a Lite On 5005 that died. I record old home made videos (no encryption, no macrovision, no nothing) from a JVC VHS to the Sony using DVD-R ( I have used several different brands - Verbatin, Imation, TDK, Sony - the results are all the same, and I have recorded at several different speeds - from 60 min to 3 hours)
Also I have rcorded directly from my TV - from a non encrypted regular Comcast TV cable - same results.
I finalize the DVD. It plays OK in the Sony GX-315 and in a built in DVD Player I have on another TV.
The problem is when I insert the DVD into my Mac Power Book G4 it shows up as a generic folder icon (a folder icon, not a DVD icon or even a CD icon) with the name "SONATA_VOLUME", totally empty - no files in it.
I am not by any means a video expert, but other DVD's that I recorded using the Lite On (and comercial DVD's) always showed up with the DVD icon and, at least, a folder called VIDEO_TS which contained the appropriate VOB files.
Since there are no files present on the Sony DVD I can not use some simple Mac software such as mpegstreamclip, MacTheRipper ( know I don't need it for unencrypted DVD's but I just tried it to see if it could find the files), QuickTime with MPEG2 and VLC to import the video files and simply clip/trim them.
When I copy the Sony DVD to my hard drive, it copies aproximately 4.3 gigs so I know that something is on the DVD (well I knew that before since it plays OK on both the Sony and in my TV as I said) but even these files can not be opened by any Mac software that I have.
I googled "SONATA_VOLUME" but most of the results were in French, German or Japaneese. It seems that this is a problem (although I can not tell what) in these countries but has not reached the USA yet.
I called Sony support today but they had no answers other than to see if there is any Mac software that will allow me to mount the DVD and access the files.
My guess at this point, and it is only a guess, is that Sony puts some type of "cover" on the files that prevent them from being recognized by computer software.
As i've mentioned before - it plays OK on the Sony and on another TV/DVD combo - it just won't be recognized by my Mac, neither in the internal CD/DVD nor in a Pioneer 110D firewire external that I have.
Most recently I tried the following:
    sudo ls -lah /Volumes/SONATAVOLUME/VIDEOTS
    and got

So as I stated there are files on the DVD, they just don't show up in the Finder. The DVD Icon is a generic folder and when I open it, it is empty.
Two other facts. The DVD plays ok, and all of the video files show up on an old Dell Latitude I have.
And, the files show up in Virtual PC running on my PowerBook G4. The DVD still has the same name but all of the video files show up.
When I simply copy the files from the DVD as recognized by VPC to a hard drive on my PB G4 I can then edit them with MPEG Streamclip.
And one other fact. When I run Can Opener (an old System 9 program that could recognize almost anything) it recognizes the files on the DVD.
I'm baffled. How can a five year old Dell, VPC and an almost ten year old OS 9 program recognize the files but 10.4.3 can't?
I really wonder what "SONATA_VOLUME" is.
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.
    Thank you.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help.
The short answer is to use the following terminal command
    sudo open /Volumes/SONATAVOLUME/VIDEOTS
to open and have access to all of the files on the DVD.

Thank you. Thank you very much.

  • How can i get my mac book pro to recognize a JVC camcorder?

How can I get my mac book pro to recognize a JVC camcorder using a Sony CAMERA USB cord??

Gotta say thank you — again.  Sorry the posts were spread out over more than one location.    I'll check and see if Third Party Software is considered a "peripheral", maybe that would have been a better single thread choice?
Definitely news we can use and the reference link is appreciated.
OT ~ We keep becoming more and more aware of how easy it is to lose one's bearings when it comes to keeping up with info tech.  My husband and I are both official members of the geezer set and have been out of the work force for some years.  You really do pick up so much just by being in the environment where people are using things to get work done.  A couple of old MP3 players, PPC G5, and a vintage Inspiron 3800 that someone didn't want any more is about it.  No cell phone, no iPod, no iPad, no home wireless network, no streaming media.  Fixed income.  So we do with what we can as long as we can.  If we could get by without that Intel processor, we'd probably make do with what we've got.  On the other hand, we've really wanted a notebook for a very long time and have to admit that needing to upgrade to accomodate my husband's project is pretty much just the "reason" we need.  I really mean it when I say that we are beyond appreciative that users take the time to share info and patiently educate those of us who fall into the "slow tech" category.

  • PS CS6 has no sound with AVCHD videos from Sony Cybershot

    System Specs:
    PS CS6, fully updated
    win7/64 fully patched
    16gb ram, 11+ GB free
    ssd scratch drive, 40gb free
    camera:  Sony cybershot dsc-hx30v
    files: *.MTS
CPU: intel quad core sandy bridge 2600k, 3.4Ghz
    GPU: AMD 6950 2gb
The videos play fine in VLC 2.0.1, windows media player, GSpot 2.70a (in thumbnail window). An ancient Nero showtime even sort of plays the video (choppy and partially mangled), but the audio is fine. VLC and WMP play smoothly at full screen, 2560x1600.
In PS, there is no audio. Both microphone icons have sound waves emanating and I have tried all 4 combinations of mute and play.
I can edit and save them to h.264, high quality, 1920x1080, 59.94 fps, progressive *.mp4 file. The video plays on the other players, but again there is no sound.
GSpot shows LAV splitter -> ffdshow addio decoder -> ac3filter -> default directSound device (see details below)
When playing in PS, the video is choppy. It will play for ~1/2 second and then stutter.
Searching for a suitable group with key words (photoshop cs6 avchd video no sound)
yields 505 groups. Looks like any group to have ever had cs6 in a thread. Hmmm.
It can't be a codec problem if every other video product I have plays the files. It is certainly not a hardware limitation. It looks like a PS bug.

    Meredith,
It is perfectly legal to decode Dolby to simple stereo with the licensed codec included with Windows 7. There may be some restriction on writing AC-3 content in 5.1 format. If Adobe wanted to, it could read from the licensed, installed codec and write the edited files in any of the audio formats it does support.
    I do not believe it is a can't; it's a won't.
"... only a few digital cameras on the market with that encoder."
There are dozens of digital cameras and camcorders from Canon, Hitachi, JVC, Leica, Panasonic and Sony which use AVCHD and many more are on the way.
Almost every medium and top-tier video editor also supports AVCHD/MTS format including Avid, Premier, Final Cut, AVS, Blender, VideoStudio, PowerDirector, Windoz Movie Maker, Nero, Pinnacle, Vegas and Openshot.
    Adobe advertises on http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/features.html:
    Intuitive video creation
Bring Photoshop editing power to your video footage. Easily enhance any clip using the full range of familiar Photoshop tools, and then create movies using an intuitive set of video tools.
Adobe needs to add a bit of fine print here:
    Easily enhance any clip [1]
[1] Disclaimer:  Adobe has made a strategic decision to withhold Photoshop support for Dolby sound common on many newer and higher fidelity cameras in order to not cannibalize sales of Premier Pro.  If you have or plan to buy a video device from Canon, Hitachi, JVC, Leica, Panasonic or Sony, you may not be able to edit or even view movies with audio unless you also install Premier Pro ($799) or use a third party tool to perform audio brain surgery on your movie to rip your audio and hack it back into Photoshop in a non-Dolby form.
I feel that I was mislead by Adobe. And Adobe is still advertising this "Any Clip" claim even though the Dolby "defect" was reported in March in Beta testing. Please don't advertise what you don't support.
    Disappointed,

  • Overscan on Sony LCD

I just hooked up my Mac Mini to my Sony Bravia LCD and have black bars down the side and a minor ghosting effect which I can't explain. I heard overscan gets rid of the black bars, so is there a way to turn it off?

My primary concern is hooking my MacBook Pro to my HDTV. I had a JVC D-ILA 52" Rear Projection HDTV (1,280 x 720). That is Liquid Crystal on Silicone (LCOS).
This TV will not (DVI to HDMI cable) accept a computer signal as the MacBook Pro does NOT detect any display. It says in the JVC manual that the TV will not accept or be compatible with computers. Strange.
Anyway, the SONY rear projection 55A2000 (1,920 x 1,080) does accept via DVI to HDMI my MacBook Pro's imaging and accept for the small screen issues (scaling) it works well it appears. I may sell my JVC and buy this SONY.
I am wondering if there are any other workarounds. I do see DVI to component adapters for under $100. But someone said somewhere that the MacBook Pro will only give out RGB color space and that most HDTV's only accept a component signal (based off of luminance and chroma). So the color space difference makes this solution incompatible. Is this true?
    Anyone?

  • I have 3 video camaers JVC

I don't think Sony works with anything, for the most art they are just neat ideas but forgetabout it after you capture any video, other than the old VCR transfer method. At least for me, one of my video cams is a hard drive stored unit with 80 gig of memory, the docking unit that is sold with the cam I do not have and think it wouldn't matter, if the firewire wont transfer it like with the other 2 cams I own than other trouble exist.?
The JVC is and other Sony are mini DV tape and I have tried several firewires to transfer and they just don't seem to get noticed by the laptop.****************************************
I realize I need to have the codes from where the cams were made in my computer for it to be able and interface, I have been to the manufacturers web site for that informmation, the macbook pro just seems out on vacation about the deal of noticing the data to transfer, you know windows at least bounced an indication that something was trying to connect even if it came back with a message a required bit of something was lacking to make the transfer.
With my windows I used (but now am finding good use for blocking up equipment outside for balance and other task that windows computers might be useful for other than being a magnet for internet spam and endless updates leading to more updates) I had some success with transferring with a DVDXpress DX2 capture unit, windows had some more easy to manage add ons but the updates were OVER THE TOP RIDICULOUS!
I think I have about given up now after sending so much money over the years and time with no real results worth a darn, but here I am with a thread of hope to continue my insane journey into computing!
Thanks macbook pro helpersyou are a much more nice bunch of folks than the windows hacks for sure!

  • Do I need a true 1080p monitor to monitor HD?

I am looking at replacing my older JVC monitor.
    It's 1680x945.
Most of the monitors I see in the 17 to 20inch range are not full 1920x1080 HD.
I would like to get it right- but I do not want to spend money if I don't need to.
I work with EX footage. Corporate, web and events. No broadcast.
How important is a true 1080p monitor?

As my friends above have pointed out, the sweet spot on the JVC is the size of a postage stamp; move a few degrees in any direction and the image takes a trip into the dumper. Even that can be worked with except when you're cheek to jowl with a producer and dp - one of whom had extremely bad breath - looking over a cut for approval. The screen is incredibly reflective so you'll see something from the next county over. Other than these two rather large problems, the imaging of the JVC looks nice.
The Flanders are decent products and I would like to see them in use other than the horrid conditions at NAB, but I wouldn't go overboard with praise for them like some of the grazers do on the Creative Cow. They have a 30 day no questions asked return policy and that gives you a chance to use them which is nice. I really hate their big white logo, if I was to get one I'd have them remove it first.
$3,000 to $4,000? You really want my opinion? Find a good used Sony BVM or Ikegami HTM, something with low hours on the tube or something that has been recently retubed. Those animals are still out there. Maybe by the time it dies all this flat panel bs may have worked itself out.

  • HD Monitor Query

I am considering setting up a FCP Hi-Def facilty for 4:4:4 Uncompressed HD editing. I'm expecting most of my work to be for film and am not intending to offer grading as an option (a finishing facility down the road would do that).
With this in mind, how important is a monitor? At the moment I'm thinking of running the suite with a dual-display set-up plus a 50" Plasma as an external monitor. I've been told I should invest in a Broadcast HD monitor nonetheless but they seem a bit expensive (comparitive to the rest of the suite) and I'm none too sure that it would be necessary.
Is it just one of those things that people would expect when they hire out a HD suite, or would it be extraneous to my purposes? I'd appreciate any thoughts on the subject (especially from anyone whose been in a similar situation).
    20 iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

my favorite high def monitors right now are made by ikegami. lcd and plasma monitors, although sexy, are terrible for anything beyond a client presentation monitor.
if you're gearing up to work with 4:4:4 video, it's expensive and 5k for a 14 inch monitor is not expensive relatively speaking. i was in a digital intermediate suite not long ago looking at a 16mm film that had been transferred to D5on a 32 inch sony bvm monitor. very, very nice but with a hefty price tag.
Don't skimp when it comes to monitoring. also, get your crt while you can, panasonic and sony have ceased production (with the exception of the bvm line) and jvc and reduced it's amount of product as well. ikegami seems to be the only manufacturer with a full line of crts anymore.

  • I need a true multi-user contact management that do not involve the web

I have over 11,000+ contact in my contact data base and it is getting really slow, especailly when it try to update with iCloud.  I need a  true multi-user contact management that do not involve the web. i.e. I prefer thety sync as most of the time, I do not have access to internet at all!  I would perfer it wil work with apple contact in some way, but I need a robust contact data base... sort of the older style CRM without the web, but with sneaker net ablity and true client server speed!  I really do not feel like wriitng it in a relationship data base and do the hard work and prefer to just pay and get a top notch product.  Address book server seems to be great except I am running moutain lion and it does not work under that OS!
Any suggesytino would be sincerely appreciated.

  • What's a good calendar service to use with iCal on iPhone and mac?

Sometime around iOS 7 and Mavericks updates, my Google calendar stopped playing nice with iCal on my phone. I'm wondering what other people are doing.
I don't know whether it was Google or Apple that caused the issue, and I'm not too fussed either way, I just want to have something that works again.
What does 'not playing nice' mean?
I used to be able to create an appointment, add my wife as an invitee, and it would appear in her iCal.
Now, it appears in her email, but not calendar. Clicking "yes" on the email loads safari instead of iCal. Then there's this whole log in thing. It's annoying.
    What I'd like
    Three things:
    1. I'd like my wife and I to each have a personal calendar. She should have read/write access to her calendar, and read-only to mine (and vice versa).
    2. I'd like a share calendar that we can both see and write to. We used this for family events.
    3. I'd like to be able to invite my wife to an event, and have that invite appear in iCal both on her phone and her mac.
Everything should of course work well with iCal.
I don't care if it works with Google services, although if there's a way to fix my google calendar so that it works right, I'm open to that.

Unless you want a new computer, forget about AVCHD. It requires too much muscle to edit comfortably on anything but the fastest computer.
What camera is nice, depends on your budget. Formats that are easy to edit are HDV, DVCProHD (P2) and XDCAM. In the consumer range you could look at the Canon HV40 or XH-A1s, in the prosumer range look at the Panasonic AG-HPX170, Canon XH-H1s, JVC GY-ND250 or Sony HVR Z5 or Z7 and all Sony XDCAM cameras, especially the EX1 and EX3. In the professional range look at the Sony PDW-F355 or upward.

  • What's a good HD camera to use with Premiere Pro CS4

I've used Premiere Pro CS4 for a while now and most of the time I don't have any problems, but recently, I've been buying HD cameras, shooting some AVCHD and then having a hell of a time getting them to play nice with Premiere Pro (or WMindows Media Player... or Quicktime... or anything but their crappy bundled software that won't let me edit or anything). My girlfriend says I should give up and buy a Mac and use FCP, but I like Premiere Pro. I'm about to take another camera back to Best Buy and I'm wondering if anyone has a suggestion for the easiest camera to use with Premiere Pro.
In case you're wondering, I've bought a Canon Vixia HF10 and a Samsung HMX-H100 so far and both had every issue I can think of from codec incompatibility to aspect ratios changing to A/V sync being lost to all-out-I-don't-know-WTF-just-happend-errors. I just want a camera that's going to give me a file I can drop straight into Premiere.

  • Blackmagic Intensity Pro + G5 Quad

I've just put an Intensity Pro in my G5 Quad 2.5 - Blackmagic software 1.8.4. Tiger 10.4.11.
After installing and restart the system udgraded the card firmware automatically.
Everything is working fine. Balckmagic says that card won't work on Power PC system.
    Hung

I've been using the card for 3 months now. Everything is working fine and we earn our living with :
    - Capturing firewire DV and preview editing with YUV monitor (instead using digital-analog converter or thru the converter of VCR or camera / I bought a 1500 $ Canopus ADVC 500 to do this and it passed away)
    - Capturing SD Prores analog thru YUV for green screen or high-end project. So far we logged and batch captured clips from 15 to 30 minutes each, using firewire device control like 422 : 6 projects achieved this way.
    - Concerning HDV : capturing HDV to Prores thru firewire is so convenient why using YUV or HDMI ? We succeeded with JVC 720-50p and Sony 1080i. Just rewind your tape at the beginning and the capture will go on automatically and creates new clip every time you stop and restart your camcorder. When the system detects no time code anymore, the capture will stop. Intensity allows us to preview HD Prores editing on a LMD-2050 Sony monitor. The sad thing is we need to downconvert to SD DVD or MPEG 1 or AVI. to deliver customers .
    - We have no need to capture from HDMI and use the HDMI output to show project to customers on a 42 Sony TV.
The Intensity allows us to do all we need. 300 dollars (only 200 euros) is not a big deal for all the services we've got and besides not a single crash down.
