JVC Everio HD and PRE9 - Optimal Settings to Blu-ray burn

I have a new GZ-HM550 (AVCHD 1920x1080/60i and have really been struggling with finding an NLE that I like. I have plenty of computer (Dell Vostro, quad core, 4GB RAM, XP Pro, blu-ray burner) that I use for my photography business. I've tried Pinnacle Studio (sucks - poor output), and now PRE9 and I'm not confident I'm doing it right because I can't get blu-rays to author properly - just won't play on the deck. The only program I've found that works is the one that shipped with the JVC, and it's very limited in creativity.
I Adobe Creative Suite CS4 on the machine, but didn't think to buy CS4 Premiere when I bought everything else. CS5 Premiere would work, but only supports 64bit op systems and for now I need to stick with XP for other reasons - so I'm looking for a NLE that will work with these very large .mts files I was hoping that PRE9 would be it, but so far I don't think so, everything seems to take forever, and it looks like it's transcoding when it burns to Blu-Ray - which I wouldn't think it should need to.
Any guidance or advice on how to set up project and share options to get high quality output with this combination? Desired projects will be wedding and event videos with relatively simple transitions and menu's but in highest possible quality to blu-ray disc

Welcome to the forum.
There are only two formats allowed on BD, HD MPEG-2, and BD-compliant H.264. Though the AVCHD is a sub-set of H.264, it is not quite the same as the BD-compliant H.264, so one will need to Transcode for BD authoring.
One thing that I am not sure of (don't have PrE 9, so I cannot check), is whether PrE offers a choice of BD format. Others will be able to tell you though.
Also, just as with DVD, I strongly recommend using the best quality blank media, when doing BD. The quality and playability will be much higher. Verbatim is about as good as it gets. Memorex is about as bad as it gets. Store brands, and many others, are nearly as bad as Memorex. What brand of blank media have you been testing on?

Change the Blu-Ray burn speed from within PRE9

I burned a 2 hour video to Blu-Ray last night from within PRE9, and it all turned out well. Except it took maybe 5 or 6 hours to burn (its 6x speed disc).
Is this to be expected? I don't see any settings for burning speed from within PRE9.
I burned a 2 hour test Blu-Ray the other day from within the software that the Blu-Ray burner came with (where you can adjust the burn speed), and I could swear it was much faster. But I don't want to waste another disc just to test this out.

Unfortunately, PrE does not allow one to alter the Burn Speed. The "big brother," Encore has that capability.
In PrE, I suggest doing a Burn to Folder, and then the great, free burning utility, ImgBurn, which allows that adjustment. However, without extra software (virtual BD burner software), PrE does not allow BD Burn to Folder, at least not yet.

How do I determine correct media encoder settings for Blu-Ray

I am successfully producing Hi Def Blu-Ray disks by using one of the presets available in Premiere media encoder. Actually using the HDTV 1080i 25 High Quality setting. They playback in beautiful high definition but I think I was just lucky. I would really like to know what determines the setting I should use.
1. I live in Australia so I assume PAL.
2. My camera is a Sony HDV. HCR HC9 1440 x 1080i. I assume this is irrelevant to export encoding settings for Blu-Ray.
3. The export encoder preset has field order set to Upper. I would have thought I should either match the project settings which is interlaced to match my camera and project. OR more likely I should match the audience TV which would be a widesceen plama or LCD TV. I dont know if these TVs are interlaced or progressive. OR is it more a question of what field order the Blu-Ray player expects me to send on the disk?
4. I will play on a TV 1920 x 1080 pixel capable and on slightly lower resoultion widescreens. The encoder preset is for 1920 x 1080 so I assume that's ok for all widescreen TVs even lower definition ones.
As you can tell I am a learner. Any suggested links to basic reading on the subject would help me.

Since no response I've been searching and found the following.
When encoding to make a Blu-Ray disk from my HDV 1080i footage:
1. Tell encoder the source is 1080i That is interlaced and it's TOP field first for HDV footage.
2. Tell it to encode to 1440 x 1080 resolution. You could tell it 1920 x 1080 but it will take much longer to encode. Will be good but why bother. All BD players will automatically up the 1440 to 1902 full screen.
3. Beware, not all players support BD-R and BD-RE recordable disks.
Seems Panasonic is good. Samsung probably good. Sony and Sharp probably not able to read (yet).
4. All players read MPEG-2 compression and H264 compression. Use a bit rate of 25 Mbps for MPEG-2 encode or 18 Mbps for equivalent result in H264 encode. Can use higher rates. These are minimums for a very good result
5. One pass encode is pretty damn good but use two pass if you have the time to wait for the encode.

Render settings for Blu-Ray in the UK

Hi all,
Bit of a newbie question regarding render settings for Blu-Ray. If I understand correctly, the uk frame rate is 25fps???? And we generally have 1080p TV's etc??? The Blu-ray presets in Media encoder don't offer this and the fact they don't makes me question if I'm not understanding the required settings correctly. ME does offer a 25fps preset but only in 1080i. So, my question is, what should I be rendering to, to then take the rendered file and author it to play on UK blu-ray players. Incidentaly, does anyone have any recommendations on authoring software. I just need to break it down into several seperate categories as well as being able to play the entire movie so the budget is minimal.

Hi, I'm using Mac Blu-rayRipper Pro and iMedia converter as well as Handbrake to get the highest quality transfer from my Blu-ray disks to iTunes and AppleTV. Each disk is a bit of a project as no two are the same in terms of the best method of conversion.

It's a complex project and there are a lot of possibilities. Among them is the length; there are a number of reports of projects that are approaching 2 hours failing to burn.
If it's a question of jarring Create Disk into action, one thing that has worked for some users is simply to click on and the Apply button (s) in the Settings pane of the Blu Ray Share window and then hitting Cancel. This can be tested by duplicating your project and selecting a tiny section of your sequence and exporting. Change the Output Device to Hard Drive and see whether Create Disk successfully writes a disk image.
You can also check that a specific clip isn't rendering properly. Since the process got to 59%, it may just mean that the burn couldn't be initiated by Create Disk – or it may indicate a problem with a clip toward end of your sequence. (If you can check the log, there may be something useful in there.)
Use the duplicated project and this time set a range for the last 30 minutes or so of the project and export it, using the Blu Ray destination. Again, set Output Device to HD and see whether it will complete.

Toast 11 and ASUS Blue-Ray burner not working together!

Hey All,
I recently got an ASUS SBC-06D2X-U Blue-Ray burner and found out that little "Mac compatabile" label isn't correct. Had to get Toast 11. Now I have that and the disk spits out still when I try to burn. I don't know what to do at this point. Disks are 4x and burner is 6x, but that shouldn't matter.
Help please!

Help with Connection Settings for Blu ray-to-Airport Express-to-TC?

I'm trying to use the network capability of my Sony Blu ray player and having no luck. I have the Blu ray connected via ethernet cable to the Airport Express, which in turn is connected wirelessly to my Time Capsule. The problem I'm having is horrendous because I'm so lame and no amount of forum or internet searching has helped.
The Blu ray network settings wants the following information:
IP Address
Subnet Mask
Default Gateway
DNS Server (Primary)
DNS Server (Secondary)
Do I get these settings from System Preferences>Network>AirPort>Advanced or do I get them from either the Airport Express or Time Capsule using AirPort Utility?
I tried giving the Blu ray player a static IP Address in Time Capsule using DHCP Reservations and the Blu ray's MAC Address, but that's not working either. Between the AirPort Express, Time Capsule, cable modem, and MacBook Air there are numbers everywhere and I just don't which set to use.

Are you trying to connect it to your AirPort Express wirelessly? (That's probably the case if your AirPort Express is your only Wi-Fi device, as its Ethernet port would be connected to your broadband modem.)

Mainconcept Mpeg Pro HD and Encore transcode problems with blu-ray

I wanted to use premiere pro to edit my HDV files and import them into Encore to produce Blu-ray discs without transcoding. I have tried the Mainconcept Mpeg Pro HD plugin 3.1 as this should provide smart transconding of the edited file. I have been having difficulty in exporting from Premiere a file which will import into Encore and to flag it as don't transcode for blu-ray.
I have only been able to get Encore to not transcode if the file is demultiplexed into seperate video and audio files and that the video file must be a program stream. Unfortunatly I can only get Mpeg Pro to export a transport stream and I have to multiplex it onto a program stream for Encore.
Is there a way to export from Mpeg Pro with smart transcoding a file which will not be transcoded by Encore.

If I choose the default BR disc export settings from the MainConcept MPEGPro export module, the file is automatically set to Multiplexing:None.
Is that what you are trying to do?
Another method to try is to make sure that the audio settings in a program stream from MPEGPro match the BR audio transcoding settings in Encore. If the audio is mismatched, then the whole file will be re-transcoded in Encore.

Sorenson Squeeze H264 settings for blu-ray?

I'm trying to create a blu-ray in encore, and when importing an H264 using squeeze's blu-ray preset, encore wants to reencode. However, a blu-ray mpeg2 created from squeeze's presets works fine with encore. I'm not able to have Adobe Media Encoder installed on the computer that I am encoding from. Any advice? Here are the settings:

My choices entropy encoding are either CABAC or CAVLC. I tried the various combinations of main/high and 2-pass/1-pass with CAVLC with no luck.
I downloaded MeGui but haven't had a chance to try it yet since it doesn't take quicktime reference files. My original media is coming from an Avid project, so I suppose I could export a DVCPRO HD quicktime (the media's original format) to test. Are there any settings in MeGui I need to be aware of or does it have a preset that is close enough to what I need?

Best Compressor 3.5 Settings For Blu Ray Authoring in Roxio Toast

I want to export a 2 hour FCP7 project for eventual burning onto blu ray (BD-R DL) disk using Roxio Toast and I was wondering what are the settings in Compressor 3.5 to be able to achieve the absolute best quality file to take into Roxio?
As an aside, is Compressor even required for this or can I import the full res FCP7.mov file?

I'm not sure about this, but you may only be able to use h.264 for video to make a blu-ray inside of Compressor.
I would suggest encoding in MPEG-2/AC3 in Compressor and then using Toast to author and burn.

Encore CS5 and 5.1 audio to Blu Ray not working

I have a premiere project that, with the exception of a welcome title card, is one video track of *.m2v and one audio track of AC3 5.1. The master volume track is 5.1 as is the audio 1 track. When I use dynamic link to sent this to encore, it always produces a blu-ray that is dolby stereo and not dolby 5.1
Any ideas?

I was going to give up but then I succeeded in creating a 5.1 audio mix on the blu ray by:
1 Not using Premiere at all
2. Creating a new blu ray project in Encore
3. Importing the AC3 audio file as an asset first
4. Right clicking on the AC3 and using it to create the timeline
5. Importing the quicktime video only file as an asset and adding that to the timeline
6. Building the blu-ray
7. I imported the/stream file on the Blu-ray itself into Premiere so that I could see the wave forms and it was a 5.1 track.
Works.

I am not here to create a flaming discussion of any type--just to express my current disappointment with DVD studio Pro.
I am working on several commercial projects and tradeshow programs that need to be presented in HD. I am utterly disappointed with Apple's absolute LACK of support for Blu-Ray at the moment.
I realize that we are talking about (bleeding-edge) technology, but really folks...Blu-Ray burners and players and media ARE on store shelves. HD-DVD recorders (for the most part) are not.
POINT: I had to purchase a PC-based program today (Sonic DVD-HD) to do the work of a SW program I already own (DVDStudio Pro).
Please get it together and support Blu-ray in DVD Studio Pro. Please stop sending me to "the dark side..." for workflow solutions.

Eric. I certainly don't think it will be any "better". They are both sub-$1000 programs. And yes, compared to Scenarist and the few other snooty $100,000 proprietary solutions that only Hollywood owns...well...there is no comparison.
But that was not my point.
This is simply an issue about basic features.
For clarity I was whining (in a very public manner) about having to spend $600 to buy another program to get capabillities that I feel DVDStudio Pro should already have at this point.
Nothing more.
I just need to be able to provide HD video content to clients (for their presentations) and not roll it off of a $35k HDCAM or $24k DVCPRO-HD deck.
I simply feel let down by Apple. Blu-Ray hardware is on the market and they have almost no application support for it. They spent oodles of time and energy building HD-DVD support into their software (Its right there in the DVDSTP menu)...and well...the HD-DVD hardware does not yet exist for retail customers.
In response to your broad sweeping generalizations of doom and incompatibility:
This evening (after posting my first frustrated note), I bought the SonicDVDItProHd package (100MB download), authored a simple 10 minute (single video track, 1080i content) self-looping presentation and burned it to a 25gb blu-ray disc that plays in our Samsung set-top blu-ray player.
It works. No issues. I simpy wish that I had been able to do it from within DVDStudio Pro.
User Experience: And no, the Sonic package does not hold a candle to DVDStudio Pro. Compared to DVDSTP, the Sonic package is inelegant and lacks most of the advanced features and intuitive working of DVDSTP.

I'm not sure if/how this is possible, but I'd like to export one of my HDV sequences and take it to a production house that can burn a Blu-Ray disc for me. Is it possible to do this using FCP/Compressor or should I wait until NAB for hopefully FCP 6?
If it's possible to export an HDV quality master can someone walk me through it? Would it work for them to use a file that I just export as a full-quality self-contained Quicktime movie?

Talk to the production house of choice. Only they can tell you what they need. Hopefully for you it won't be HDV.

I have CS5 and my blue ray burn is failing

I am trying to build a blu ray disk on a mac running 10.6.4. I created the file in FCP7.02 and did an XML transfer to premiere. I then did a dynamic link to encore. All good until i try to do the build for a DVD Blu Ray image I get the error message "Error with directory "Transcodes""
