JVC Everio .mod files on FCP

I want to purchase a JVC Everio camcorder that records to hard disk. The problem is I've heard people have to convert the .mod files it creates to be able to edit with them.
Their website says they record "High-Quality MPEG-2 Video Recording (up to 720 x 480/60i in ULTRA mode with Dolby Digital Audio (MOD file)"
Seeing as how I can read/write dolby sound and mpeg2 I thought I could just drop them straight into FCP, or maybe rename the extension then drop them in.
Can someone let me know they've been able to do this? Or could someone supply me a small clip with sound I can try for myself before I buy this camera?
Cheers

MPEG 2 files are not generally directly editable in FCP, so you'll have to convert them to a native format. I seem to recall that MPEG Streamclip or DVDxDV will convert the files to DV, but I may be mistaken. Perhaps someone with experience with this camera will pipe up...

  • JVC Everio .mod files

Hi, i've got a JVC Everio and have nothing but troubles.
it creates .mod files, which i understand are just mpeg files. So i simply change the extension, but when i import them into AE, i get sometimes a few big red pixels, one frame is then all bright red.
I don't get this when i play it in another player.
In premiere the files play (red squares still happens), but no sound at all.
anyone had this problem, any extensions, workarounds?
    Cheers, Dimitri

As Andrew said: Use the conversion options in the bundled software. The camera uses MPEG-II transport streams, possibly with long-GOP extensions, which is simply *yuck* for any editing. It needs at least be converted to a proper MPEG-II file with a predictable GOP scheme or even I-frame only so Premiere and AE can make sense of it. If the software CD provides a specific CoDec, you may be able to load the file as an AVI. Will be slow as hog as it relies on Windows' own components, but might at least avoid the artifacting.

  • LR 4.2 won't import a JVC Everio MOD (MPG) video file

I have hundreds of JVC Everio video files that are natively created as MOD files on the camcorder.  However, I can copy them to my Windows 7 system and simply rename them as *.MPG files and they play fine in Windows Media Player.  I noticed that Adobe Premier Elements can import MOD files, but I get a "There is a problem with the video file..." error message in LR4.2 when I try to import the renamed MPG file.  The Import function won't display MOD files as a valid file format, but the MPG files do appear in the Import browser list.

I'm confused about the licensing issue.
Cyberlink PowerDirector will successfully import and manipulate both *.MOD files and MOD files renamed as *.MPG.
Adobe Premier Elements can (apparently) import MOD files (see http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/supported-file-formats-premiere-elements.html).
    Why can't Lightroom?
Any recommendations on what format to convert the MOD files to so I can import them into Lightroom?

  • How can I best work with JVC Everio video files?

For a variety of reasons, MOD files from JVC Everio camcorders can be challenging for many video editors, including Premiere Elements, to work with.
Forum member MarkItVision offers his best solution for making the files easier to edit.
Using CyberLink Power Director Express - a program which comes bundled with the camcorder - capture the video and then place it on the timeline. Then go to File>Produce Movie and at "step 1" select "create a file"
Change the settings as shown to Type II and High Quality 48k. Change settings by clicking on the button two over from the one labeled CLVS and you can confirm the audio is PCM using the button to the right of it.
Follow the arrow "right" and give your file a name and location It will output the AVI as a DV-AVI Type II 48kHz PCM.
Import this file into a Premiere Elements project. The program should work easily with it.
To conform your video file for widescreen, drag it to the timeline, right-click on it and set it to "interpret footage as D1/DV PAL (or NTSC) Widescreen 16:9 (1.422)".

What version of iTunes are you using? iTunes version 10.6.3 should work.
    iTunes 10.6.3 download http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1575
It's for your Mac or PC, not your iPad.
What version of of iOS is on the iPad?

  • Converting MOD files for FCP - what compression?

I've been given lots of MOD (and MOI) files to edit. I realise I need to convert these to quicktime MOV files before I can import them into FCP, and I will be using MPEG Streamclip to do this.
The question is what compression should I use? h.264, Apple DV PAL, the list is endless. The end result will be exported for the web.
If it helps, the footage was recorded on a Canon FS-200.

  • Handling .MOD files converted to mpg2 in FCP

I am editing a piece for someone who rented a camera (a Canon, shot a short piece and sent me the footage (all PAL). The subsequent footage was sent online via zip files and when opened were .MOD files. FCP would not handle these files and so I convert the subsequent files to mpg2 files ( in iSkysoft i media converter). The converted files work fine when opened in quicktime on the computer but as soon as I try to import to FCP I lose all audio. I was up for hours last night trying to trouble shoot this problem. I did try switching to a .mov, but it changes the PAL to NTSC framing and I would much rather work in the footages original formats? Does anyone have any suggestions to my query? Thanks for your time...OBJ

I convert the subsequent files to mpg2 files...
MPEG 2 is a Long GOP delivery format -not an editing format. Final Cut Pro works with industry standard editing formats.
I did try switching to a .mov,...
Mov is a container used by QuickTime. The video inside could have been made by any one of a number of codecs.
but it changes the PAL to NTSC
It would only do that if your settings in QuickTime Player were incorrect.
The MOD files need to be converted directly to QuickTime .mov. Do not use the MPEG 2 files, they have already gone through an unneeded compression cycle.
Read this [tutorial|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2070861&tstart=0]. Instead of using a DV setting as discussed there, use *Apple Pro Res*.

Have you done a 'get info' on the files? Are they locked? What is the default app to open them?
Try a repair permissions on the disk & then try to change the file type extension.
Have you tried the typical FF method of downloading videos via the Tools>Page Info>Media tab & selecting the files which show up with the largest file size?
In Safari this is via the Window>Activity and double-clicking on the largest file which is typically the video file. as Ed mentions, this would download as 'get video' with .txt extension; changing to .flv makes it work flawlessly, & opens in QT too if Perian is installed.

  • JVC Everio Widescreen settings in PE9

I have just purchased Premiere Elements 9 as It looked like all was OK with the trial. I record Standard Def videos on my JVC Everio HDD camera in 16:9. I started a new project and selected the widescreen setting (which even references the JVC HDD recorder). When I then add media to my project, it says the media is not the same type as the project and so I accepted the project change to suit my video. Whether I accept the change or not, when I preview, it always appears stretched like 4:3 instead of 16:9 and I have just compiled a video and it even burns to disc as 4:3 even though the disc output selection is widescreen. How can I get the package to preview in 16:9 and ensure it keeps the clips in 16:9 which is how they are recorded? The menus do appear as widescreen format.

This often happens with Everio MOD files.
It's an issue related to the video format itself, and is not a problem with Premiere Elements.
About the only solution is to right-click on the clips in the Project folder and select Interpret Footage to set the correct Pixel Aspect Ratio.
Also, as I said in your other thread, you probably haven't selected the correct project settings. If you had, there would not be a red line above your clips when you placed them on your timeline. Is this the case?

  • Importing .mod files into iMovie from JVC Everio

Just bought a JVC GZ-MZ 255 camcorder which produce MPEG-2 .mod files. I have a ibook G4 with 10.4 OS and iLife '06 (contains imovie). Shouldn't imovie recognize the camera when hooked an automatically import? I have a feeling that streamclip might come into play - but is there another option? Anyone have experiece with this? Thanks!

    Hi Brady,
I have a new Everio HD that I have been fooling with all day. Finally got a clip into iMovie 6 ....but only once and I'm still figuring this out too.....if you are not using a HD camera this may or may not work for you.
The Everio Quicktime extension must be installed. (Download and install the patch if you upgrade to Leopard).
Is your camera an HD? If so you need to capture the clip in 1440 CDR not FHD (FullHighDef).
Launch iMovie 6. Create a new movie in Video format HDV 1080i . then plug in your camera via firewire.
Put the camera in playback mode (Play/REC), press the Function, select Dubbing Playback (bottom of the menu). You should get a menu with a start button now. Switch to iMovie 6 and select "Import". This should start the clip playing from the camera....you may have to hit the Start on the camera.
This should get your clips into i Movie.
We may be ably to create playlists and get them in that way too but I have not had any luck with the JVC instructions to do this. There are video tutorials on the JVC website too but again they have not worked for me.
There is also a way to get and work the FHD files but that is a USB file transfer followed by a file conversion. I'll tackle that a little later...
    Good luck,
    Roger

  • Importing .MOD and .MOI files to iMovie - from JVC EverioS GZ-MS100

I'm desperate in finding a solution on the problems I have with importing .MOI and .MOD files to iMovie from a JVC EverioS GZ-MS100.
I have looked up all advices I can, also on this forum... But nothing seems to work for me at all!
PLEASE someone tell me asap how I can get my videos to iMovie so I can start editing my videos...
Thank you so much in advance!!
    I have iMovie '09 version 8.0.6 (821).

The Zi6 is not on the compatibilty list however I based my knowledge on this review at macworld.com
    http://www.macworld.com/article/135948/2008/10/kodakzi6.html
"To copy your captured content to the Mac, flip out the USB connector, switch on the camera, and jack it into a free USB 2.0 port. If you have the latest version of iPhoto, it launches and offers to import the separate video and image files. If you don’t have the most recent version of iPhoto, you’re welcome to import files into iMovie ‘08 with the File: Import Movie command, or into iMovie HD via the File: Import command. Each command produces an Import navigation window, where you can locate the movies on the attached camera (within the DCIM folder).
The Zi6’s movies are encoded in the H.264 format; as a result, there’s no need to install another codec to use them as you would for movies recorded with the Flip cameras, because H.264 is natively supported by QuickTime (and therefore iMovie and Final Cut Pro). Audio is recorded in the AAC format at 48 Kbps."
So this suggests iMovie 08 will accept the file format the Zi6 porduces. I will attempt file conversion before I loose iMovie 06 though.

  • How to use .mod files from a JVC camcorder?

    Hi All,
I'm trying to find the proper workflow for using .mod files from a JVC Everio model camcorder. I was able to transfer the files onto my system by simply using the included usb cable from the unit. It simply mounted the camera's flash card on my desktop and I was able to drag all of the files from it.
As others have posted, the .mod files are not accessible using the Import function in FCP. I am able to open them with MPEGStreamClip as other have suggested. My question is, how should the files be converted to use with FCP and/or DVDSP? In MPEGStreamclip the file shows the video stream as: 224 MPEG-2, 720 × 480, 16:9, 29.97 fps, 8.40 Mbps, upper field first. I tried a few of the demux functions. The straight demux to .m2v & .ac3 yields a file that opens in QT, but it shows up as a 640x480 file and is noticably squeezed. Using the demux unscaled yields a file that opens in QT as a 720x480 file and looks somewhat better. And using the demux to headed yields as file that opens in QT as 720x404 and presumably is the correct 16:9 ratio.
Trying to use those same files in DVDSP didn't get me very far. If I create a new HD project in DVDSP I can import the straight demuxed file and the headed file. The unscaled file won't import. If I add the imported files to tracks the straight demuxed one will play in the simulator but the headed one simply shows a green screen.
I'm hoping that since MPEGStreamclip can play the files, its just a question of figuring out the proper export/conversion settings. My end goal is to produce a dvd of the footage (not exactly sure if I should be using an HD project or a SD project set to letterbox). I also need to produce a web-ready version of the footage. I haven't tried this yet but I'm assuming that one of the QT exports from MPEGStreamclip will get this done correctly.
Hopefully someone has a workable solution for these files.
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi all,
I looked further on this forum and found others that had the same problem. One suggested connecting the cam corder first, then start iMovie, then wait for a few minutes. I did this and it worked!!!!!
    Problem solved.
    Thanks.

  • JVC Everio files to iMovie HD how to keep chronology

Has anyone made sense off or found a reference on the file and folder naming structures on the Everio HD. I have difficulty keepig my chronology straight when I import clips into iMovie HD. Any suggestions would be welcome. Sure you can print a log with the dates and file names on the original HDD and use that for a reference. Since each scene is a file you can have 100 files at the end of the day and it is tedious,,is there an easier way? Using the camera menu I eleted all files, later I connected to MAc and the HDD shows 8 empty folders named PROG-001 to PROG-008. each has one small file in it. When I started recordiga new folder PROG-001A was created. Each MOD file is labeled successively until you use the pause button, then it goes to a OOOA,000B,000C until you power off. When you convert the MOD files to DV they all come out with creation dates and times as time of conversion.

Ooops. My mistake. Sorry about that.
JVC Everio records MPEG-2. (I'll blame a site claiming otherwise, I didn't check JVC's site).
MPEG-2 can be converted to DV with MPEG Streamclip (free) and Apple's MPEG-2 playback plugin ($20).

  • Convert .mpeg files from JVC Everio HD Camcorder for iDVD/iMovie use?

    Hello,
I am a brand new Mac user, but an experienced PC user. I have a JVC Everio 30gb HD camcorder that records video as .mod files, which can then be changed to .mpeg format to view. I want to edit these files and make home DVDs with iMovie and iDVD, but they say that the .mpeg format is not recognized. What do I need to do to use these .mpeg video files with these software programs?

well... the iApps iMovie and iDVD are meant to work
    with firewire connected miniDV camcorders...
you lose the convenience of the iApps... anyhow:
    Streamclip

for mpeg2 conversion, you need additionally the Apple

    helpful?
    Thanks for the quick response!
Well, I think they are in mpeg2 format, but not positive. Anyway, I did away with miniDV camcorders because they transfer much slower to the computer than the HD camcorder...but now I get this issue! lol I guess that's what I get for switching to a Mac!
Is there any other way besides the $20 plugin to convert the file? Will the plugin lose any quality in the conversion process?
