JVC GY-HM100u Import issues for MOV files

We shot the most recent video in the MOV format using our JVC
camera.  The native files only open with audio in Premiere CS5.
When trying to open the xml files, we keep getting
"The importer reported a generic error."  What codecs do we need to fix this for quicktime or what
other work arounds are available?
Thanks

<sigh>
That's because MP4 and MOV are the CONTAINERS, not the codec, and the containers are not the same. It's an XDCAM EX 35Mbps camera, first and foremost--this is a specific codec used to compress the captured images. Then, they are stuffed into either an MP4 box or an MOV box; you use the MOV box when you're working on a Mac with FCP, and you use the MP4 box when you want to preserve your sanity (and mine, apparently). What is inside those boxes is EXACTLY the same.
You need to use MP4--even though it's the same codec and content--because Apple does not provide the decoding components ("box cutter") for XDCAM EX MOVs on the Windows version of QuickTime, or on any Mac that does not have FCP installed. QuickTime on Windows can't open the box, Premiere Pro cannot open the box, and pretty much everything else on the PC cannot open the box. However, the program I linked to earlier can open the MOV box, and will put the video into a different box (actually, an MPG box, not an MP4 box, but it really doesn't matter). This is no different than moving your Levis from one suitcase to another; they don't suddenly become a polyester leisure suit.
If you're hell-bent on using the MOV container, I won't try to convince you any longer: plunk down the cash for the Calibrated XD Decode QuickTime components and get on with it.

  • Exact import settings for .mov files via MPEG Streamclip?

Ok, as I mentioned in this other thread , I'm looking to import some files recorded at an odd resolution into FCE.
Resizing my 512x288 files to 720x480 looks like it works, as well as with my 640x480 ones (don't know how it'll ultimately mess with the quality)... but I did do a test using some footage from 3 different video sources with different native resoultions, a)720x480 Sony DV Cam, b) 512x288 captured by helmet cam on Archos PMA 430, and c) 640x480 captured on Canon SD600, as well as .jpeg photos at 640x480 res.
I changed the odd sizes (Archos & Canon) to 720x480 using MPEG Streamclip, resampling the sound uncompressed at 48 khz, using the Apple DV/DVCPRO NTSC compression option. Importing these files into FCE, I mixed them and the Sony standard footage, and a few pictures up on a timeline, rendered it and exported it to a QT file, then burnt a CD. It appears to have worked to my satisfaction.
My question is, before I go and convert about 60 5-10 minute clips to this 720x480 resolution for use in a full length documentary, are there any settings I should be ticking off on the MPEG Streamclip interface to maximize the likelihood that the final project will work as well as the test did?
Below are the options I selected in the test, which seemed to work:
    MPEG STREAMCLIP
    Compression: Apple DV/DVCPRO-NTSC
    Quality: 100%
    Sound: Uncompressed Stereo 48 KHZ
    Frame Size: 720x480
    Frame Rate: 29.97
    Checked boxes for:
    -Frame Blending
    -Better Downscaling
    -Interlaced Scaling
    Zoom: 100%
    X/Y: 1
    Center: 0,0
    Field Dominance: Upper field first
That's about it. I tried doing similar conversions in a trial version of DIVX Converter pro, but the quality was noticibly lower than in MPEG streamclip. Maybe I just had the wrong settings in it.
Anyway, Tom Wolsky has mostly got me on the right track in the last post "...so the material needs to be a .mov QuickTime file in DV NTSC, at 29.97fps, audio should be Linear PCM with a sample rate of 48KHz, and frame resolution of 720x480 using the CCIR601 digital video aspect ratio... be warned you're scaling up a very, very heavily compressed video stream, so it's going to look less than optimal when you make it DV. I can't believe they can do 192kbps at that frame rate, when DV, which is heavily compressed as well, is 3.5MB/sec."
I have no idea if what I described in my test is heavily compressed or not, so couldn't really say how the settings I mentioned above affect Tom's latter advice.
Anyway, any help would be welcome before I encode all these files. Thanks.

I'm kind of confused because the only settings I could find on the Handycam for audio are 12 khz and 16 khz, and though I think I filmed them at 12, I've captured the footage at both within FCE... I'm not sure either have shown any probs when imported at 48 khz as yet. Not sure if that's because they are a multiple of 48 or I just got lucky. Either way, 1) does the audio bit rate the footage was captured at (12 khz) change to 16 if changed on the camcorder (or is it solely what the original was filmed in, period) prior to capture on FCE, 2) and if so or if not, how serious of a problem will it pose, if I do nothing and keep the FCE settings at the normal NTSC 48khz, in later stages of production considering there will be a lengthy timeline?

  • Why doesn't Lightroom 4 create xmp files for mov files?

This would be useful for moving files to other applications and databases. As far as I can tell Adobe doesn't share any metadata for .mov files between any of it's CS6 programs either, Bridge, Prelude, Premiere, etc. As a still photographer who is now shooting DSLR video I want to get metadata entered as soon as possible for my still and video files. It would be best to do both stills and video at the same time. Camera Bits Photo Mechanic is the only program I've found so far that does this. Canto Cumulus is able to read Photo Mechanic's xmp files. I don't really need Photo Mechanic in my workflow except for this issue.

  • DTW--  How to Import  Issue for Production

    Hi ,
How do i import Issue for Production Through DTW.
    Thanks & Regards
    somi mishra

    hello,
why do you want to use DTW to issue for production ? You could use backflush as issue method so that you can skip issue for production job. If you have issue for production batch job which it means you want to add all the qty of RM issued to production one times and all at onces for more than 10 PO, I think it is better to use addon. You create an excel template and export the data to be txt file, the txt file imported to the issue for production form using the addon. I just compare this situation with the client request in long time ago. they request fast and not manual sales order creation from quotation. just to compare it to your situation but need your detail explanation.

  • Imovie wont import an mp4 movie file

Can't figure out why my imovie won't import an mp4 movie file. It's done it before. The font for the file I want to import appears in faded letters and won't highlight to be selected. ????? Any suggestions?

    .mp4 is just a media-container, or wrapper.
it doesn't tell us nor iMovie what's inside.
open the .mp4 with the Quicktime Player, hit ctrl-i .. tell us about 'Codec'

  • Resolution for .mov files for film festivals

Some film festivals are asking for .mov files for screenings. Nowhere can I find what type or resolution they want or if there's an industry standard.
I have seen that if they play it back from a laptop (and you never know) that too high a resolution won't work.
Is there a standard for movie theaters?
    Thanks.

    Neal Fox wrote:

    Yes and No
DCP is a worldwide, digital delivery standard for commercial theaters. But, by standards, is for example 'limited' to 24fps - sad news, for Mr P. Jackson or J.Cameron (no idea, how HFR nor 3D is delivered…)
highly complex to encode, there are specialized companies offering 'transfer services' - $$$, creates enormous files (an intra-compression codec), asks for 'Linux formatted/ext2'-drives, etc etc etc ,.. . (just read about it - no clue what I'm talking about!!)
    Plan B)
ask the theatre what they want …or use.
    Plan C)
1080/24p, h.264/high profile/20mbps in a mp4 should be very universal … (who asks for mov can playback mp4 too)
    … but then, next question:
What media? stick, dataDisk, hard drive, ftp-upload?
What format? fat32 (doesn't work for longer movies…), exFat, ntfs??
some non-commercial festivals allow/prefer delivery by BluRay or even on DVD ...
again, 'limited' too, but very, very universal …

  • Is XMP import/export for MOV/MTS/MP4 files not supported?

I have been evalutating LR4 and am stuck on how to import my files from another DAM into LR4.
I am able to write XMP into JPG files, and provide sidecar XMP files for RAW (CR2) and MOV/MP4/MTS files, writing my hierarchical keyword information into the xmp-dc:Subject and xmp-lr:HierarchicalSubject fields.
LR4 seems to read the XMP keywords from the JPG and RAW files just fine and re-creates my keyword hierarchy.
LR4 seems to ignore on import the XMP for the non-image files such as the MOV/MP4/MTS files for which I have provided sidecar files.
LR4 also does not write out XMP files for the non-image files, when I use save Medatada.
Does LR4 just ignore import/writing XMP for these non-image files?
    Thanks,

MTS files can't really accept metadata embedding -your best bet is to use ClipWrap to "re-wrap" AVCHD/MTS files into MOV files.
This still does not fix the problem of LR not writing XMP data to video files. Unfortunately, if you want to have metadata that stays with your MOV files, you'll want to use something aside form LR4 -I wouldn't bother doing much video cataloging in LR4.

  • Import fails for movies on Intel Macbook

Importing with iPhoto on my MacBook fails on the first movie it encounters every time.
The movies are 30 second AVI files from a Canon Ixus v3 connected via USB. The import will show no progress for about 5 minutes and then apparently time out. It returns to the iPhoto library and neither the movie nor subsequent content are there.
The same combination of camera, cable, photos & movies works perfectly on other computers, a 17" 1GHz Powerbook and and a 17" 1GHz iMac.
The same CF Flash card, photos & movies work fine on the MacBook using a CF-USB card reader.
Using Image Capture on the MacBook instead iPhoto worked once but every other time it has behaved just like iPhoto. It times out and fails to import that first movie or any subsequent content.
I created a new user on the MacBook and tried importing with iPhoto in there and the same failure occured.
I reset the PRAM and tried again to no avail.
I worked through all this with the AppleCare phone support with no success. The support person consulted senior technicians for a couple of minutes and came back to me with their opinion - that it is probably an incompatibility betwen iPhoto, the Intel Mac and the Canon Ixus v3 ie. the specific combination of those three things.
They suggest that it's not a USB issue because iPhoto imports perfectly using the CF-USB card reader. They believe it's not an iPhoto software installation issue for the same reason. It's not a preferences issue because it also failed with a new user and the PRAM reset didn't help.
They apologized for not finding a solution for me and could only offer the workaround of using the CF card reader. That's not such a bad work around but I'd still like to persist if anyone can suggest any further troubleshooting or possible solutions. I'd also like to see "me too" posts from anyone who has had the same issue.

I have had a similar problem, where maye 8 out of 10 AVI format moves will download into iPhoto, but the rest simply never get there. I did get 107 out of 109 files OK but have seen worse. I can tell you about which camera it is, how I connect and so on, but first, this:
A small sidebar in the Bugs & Fixes column of the April, 2007 Macworld magazine (see page 89) mentions that: "the likely cause is a problematic third-party QuickTime Plug-in." and advises the reader to check for and remove plug-ins not installed by OSX.
I took the same camera and imported all 109 pics from my camera on a separate account of the same machine (20" i-mac but I don't think this is relevant) and got all 109 f 109 files just fine.
So, I think "problematic third party QT plug-ins may be a good call. Need to investigate this some more, but its a flaky problem and Macs are supposed to "just plain work".

  • Quicktime video for .mov files on Windows 8.1 not working

I am using the latest Quicktime (v7.7.5) on a new install of Windows 8.1 and .mov files will play but only the audio works - there is no video.  Clearly There is a video codec missing.  Can someone at apple tell me what I need so quicktime (and other applications) can play .mov videos on Windows 8.1?
    Thank you!!!

Hey Kirk,  thank you for your reply. All my windows media players (Windows, Quicktime, Pinnacle Sudio, etc..all  only play the audio and not the video.  The quicktime player on Windows recogizes a problem and suggests that I goto this website (www.apple.com/quicktime/rescources/components......) and download missing somftware (but gives no indication of what is missing :-)).
So the Windows Quicktime Player shows that the .mov file is made with the Apple Intermediate Codec, 1308 x 736, Millions 16 bit Integer (little Indidan), Sterdo(LR), 48kHz.   I also looked at the inspector in the Mac.
This is clearly the issue. I suppose I can always use my Mac to convert files to something more compatible with windows and then move these files.  I just find it hard to believe that Apple does not have a windows 8.x version of this codec.

  • Why can't I import my ppt.mov file into iMovie?

I created a ppt movie, added music and now have a file that I want to import into iMovie. When I hit the browse button, my ppt.mov file shows up but it's light and I can't select it.

You can export from powerpoint as a MOV file. You must take care that Powerpoint does not add any extra tracks like a manual advance track. This would cause iMovie to not be able to edit it. There are several parameters you can change in the "Options" when exporting as a movie from PPT, but it is not obvious to me which of these might introduce the offending track.
The most straightforward way (or most likely to succeed) is to export from Powerpoint as photos. You can select it to Save as Photos as a series of JPEG images. These jpegs can then be imported into iPhoto for easy import into iMovie. You can add the music in iMovie as well.
I guess the question is, what are you adding in iMOvie? That might help us give better advice.
Also, if you use the iWork App "KeyNote", it gives you the option of exporting to QuickTime without a manual advance track.) Keynote can import PPT. If you do a lot of this, Keynote might be worth the money. Else, just import the photos.

  • Iphoto 6.0.5 - keeps searching for .mov file that has been deleted

    OK, this is my problem...
I am running the most recent version of iphoto. i keep all of my photos in the iphoto library, which i run off of an external drive. recently, my drive filled up so i got a new 120gb firelite drive and transferred my photos AND the iphoto library to the new drive. then i started iphoto and was given the choice to create a new library or locate the library. i chose 'locate' and pointed it in the right direction. iphoto opened, and all my photos everything appeared to be ok in the program. this is when my problems began...
problem 1: if i try to do anything with any of the photos, i am told that the file cannot be located. i tried to re-import the library but the program began complaining about not being able to locate several movie files (that are in the library and on the external drive). then iphoto stopped responding.
problem 2: i then did a force quit, and now EVERY time i try to do ANYTHING (with other programs) while iphoto is open, it begins to look for the same movie file each time. then iphoto stops responding. i've since deleted the movie from my drive and from the iphoto library, but iphoto keeps looking for it each time.
please help!!!! my sanity rests on your ability to help me out....

    1. Try rebuilding the Library: Restart the iPhoto while holding down the Apple and Option keys. The resulting dialogue will give you the options.
    2. Apart from moving the Libary, have you changed anything within the iPhoto Library Folder?

  • Importing Audio for ppt files in Captivate

How do you import audio and sync over multiple powerpoint slides? I'm using Captivate 6

    Welcome,
But this is a Captivate forum, not a PPT forum.  If you use Captivate only for converting ppt-slides maybe a plug-in would be a better idea (Adobe Presenter, iSpring).
Record the audio in Captivate, using the Audio menu. You'll get one audio clip for each slide. And then you use the timeline to synchronize the appearance of objects. But if you are importing PPT-slides that have already animations and timings, you have to know that in CP you end up with a movie file, a recording of the PPT-slide, so synchronizing with a movie is not that easy as you perhaps know. While recording the audio you can watch the movie play in CP.
