JVC GZ-HD300 + iMovie '09?

Hi all,
My wife and I received a JVC GZ-HD300 high definition camcorder as a wedding present. So far, we really like the video quality of some of the videos we've shot w/ it.
Last weekend, I plugged it into our iMac (specs below) and it worked just fine. I'm somewhat new to using a video camera w/ a computer so I have some questions.. Keep in mind that my last video camera was an RCA that used VHS cassettes.
Here are the specs for the camera: http://everio.jvc.com/print_specifications.html
- I notice that iMovie '09 will allow me to edit in 1080i, but the camera will record at 1080p at 60fps. Should we look into something like Final Cut or Premier?
- iMovie '09 is not compatible w/ the stabilization sensor on this camera (will give lines), so I have turned off stabilization on the camera. Is this something I will need to live with, will be fixed in the future, or could be addressed w/ another piece of software (ie. Final Cut, Premier, etc.)?
- Eventually, I'd like to make some of the movies we make compatible w/ our Apple TV. I haven't tried it yet but I'm assuming I can just drag/drop the h.264 files into iTunes and sync or stream them to the Apple TV. Do you have any experience w/ this?

Hi,
I work for JVC and would like to try and help.
When you connect the USB cable, you should see a USB Menu on the camcorder LCD. Be sure to select "Playback on PC" from that menu. Then, open iMovie, and then you should be fine. If that does not work, I would suggest checking your USB cable for any signs of damage, and if possible, try an alternate USB cable.

  • IMovie + JVC GZ-HD300 camcorder

I have the camcorder and i hear other people are having success hooking it up to iMovie '09. Is there anything special you are doing. I find the files on my computer in .mis, and i tried to convert it to .mov, but it didn't work.

    Hello jay
You have landed in iSight discussions. If you are having difficulty with an iSight or using your new camcorder instead of an iSight, consider the suggestions in Apple's iSight Troubleshooting page:
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93240
I don't have one, but I looked at the webpages for your GZ-HD7. It has MANY features! Your user's manual should tell you what settings are needed to use your camera as a webcam video source and how to make those settings.
My suggestion would be to set it to Standard Definition NTSC and connect Firewire to see if iMovie can see it. You should be able to configure the settings in the same way as you would to use your camcorder as a recording or dubbing source for a standard (not HD) VCR as explained in your Camcorder's Instruction Manual. Be sure that it is set to provide the correct DV output.
Once you can use it as a video recording source in iMovie, iChat and Skype should be able to use it without changing any settings.
If your problem is with using your JVC, perhaps the retailer who sold it to you can offer assistance. You might also find more help in a forum dedicated to help with your particular camera.

  • TS2289 from JVC Everio to iMovie

I'm  imported video from my cam to iMovie.
The video is OK but there is no audio, is this a bug in iMovie?

    Hi
    No
Most probably Your Camera delivers a video format (codec) iMovie can not use.
    Open it with QuickTime-player
then here open Inspector (cmd+I) and read
    • Video Format/Codec: nnnnnnnnn
What does it say ? + frame rate ?
Just reading the .mp4, .mov, .avi or whatever is not enough (they are only containers) - You need to open it with  QuickTime-player to get the true codec.

  • Most compatable video camera with iMovie 09 ?

    Please help !
I love iMovie but was very disappointed using it with my Sony Handycam - apparently they did not speak to each other !! I used Steve Mullen's book and still didn't have any luck so I sold my camera ! Now I am hoping that Santa will bring me a new video camera and I need to tell him which is the best one for my needs. The JVC GZ-HD300 has been suggested and I have checked the compatibility on the Apple register and cannot even see it listed. I would like some true advice from real people please - any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My main requirements in purchasing camera are recording in HD, HDD storage and memory card back up. Thanks

You have euro camcorders I don't know. Assuming the sr8 is our sr7 -- I havent heard anything bad. But, if you shoot where there is loud sounds the issues are:
    1) is the mic itself overloaded?
    2) does the mic overload the camcorder circuit before the gain control?
    3) if the answers are NO, then IF one could adjust camcorder gain -- then that is the solution. But, if the either 1 or 2 is true, then being able to adjust gain will not help.
Seems like the Sony suffers from 1 or 2 because if it didn't you would have already adjusted the Sony gain -- or the Sony has no gain control.
If you want to keep using the Sony you might try an external mic.
Mic output levels typically range from –40dB to -60dBu. (Bigger negative values are softer than smaller negative values.) You want a mic with less output than the built-in Sony mic. But, since you don't have its spec., it's hard to shop for a different one.
That leaves trial and error, or trying out different camcorders. Since you know at least one Canon camcorder works, I would start with Canon. I'd look for one with an external mic input AND an adjustable level. If not a level control -- a menu item to switch in "attenuation."
PS1: check if your Sony has a menu item to switch in "attenuation."
PS2: This is a wonderful example of how in 90% of the talk about camcorders, audio is never mentioned. Yet, if you talk with pros they spend more $ on mics -- often buying several -- than they do on their camcorder. In the situations you shoot at -- audio is more of a worry than video. You are recording VERY loud sounds that can overload anything but a really good mic. (Or, if the mic works -- it may out out a bigger signal than a camcorder can accept.) Which makes me wonder about buying a mic mixer and some good mics rather than a new camcorder. This would be a one time investment. In fact, you could also buy one of these stereo mic-mixer-digital recorders. Record to SD card AND pass a signal to one camcorder. It also opens the door to recording bands. Just a passing thought.

  • Yet another JVC everio HD import query

I have a JVC Everio GZ-HD7u camera with .tod video files.   JVC told me iMovie HD 6.0 is the only version of iMovie that works with these.   Is iMovie 6 available?   I have iMovie 11, which does not work, and can only find 6.02 or 6.03 on the Apple site -- these are updates to 6.0 and cannot be installed.

    Hi
    Is iMovie 6 available?
    No not from Apple
    No no free legal downloads
Only to be bought second handed via e.g. e-bay - still worth it - it's included in iLife 6 bundle (only way to get it)
When installed - directly up-grade it to 6.0.3.
6.0.4 is for the people with iMovie'08 that got a free version of iMovie HD6 - and that was just for a short while Years ago.

  • Once and for all FIX IT!

Hello, I considering buying a 3 chip camera but my problem is I don't have a clue as to which 3 chip cameras work with IMovie. Why can't Apple just fix it so ALL Video cameras work with IMovie. Afterall, FCP and FCE will import footage from almost any DV camera. Why is it so dam hard for Apple to get IMovie to do the same? Its very frustrating because it diffecult to shop for a good 3 chip while risking that it won't work with IMovie.
Would someone explain this to me.

    Emac   Mac OS X (10.3.7)

I've never had any trouble with Sony cameras, and the various 3-chip Sonys I've used ALL work with my setup - which is either PowerBooks or a Mac mini.
There often seems to be trouble noted here with G5 iMacs or G5 PowerMacs, but as I don't have one of those, I can't speak from experience. Couldn't tell you about an eMac, either, I'm afraid.
But, speaking from experience, I've never had any trouble, in any version of iMovie from 2 to 6, with a Sony TRV900 (..now discontinued..), TRV950, PDX10, FX1 ..and they're all 3-chip cameras. Never had any trouble with a 1-chip camera either, except a 330 Digital-8 when iMovie 5 first came out.
The 1-chip HC1 also works fine for me.
I haven't tried any Panasonic, Canon or JVC cameras with iMovie, so I couldn't tell you about them.
Like Dan, I've now ordered a G5 floor-stander ..so that I can import and export HDV faster.. and I'll let you know if I have any trouble using that with any of those camcorders.
But for now, all the Sony 3-chip cameras I've ever tried all work without any trouble at all in all versions of iMovie. As long as it has a FireWire connection it should work with iMovie.
    I hope that helps.
[..By the way; nice movies, Rich..]

  • Importing DV in iMovie09

I have recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and iLife09. I am now trying to import videos from my JVC DV camera. iMovie recognizes the camera and reproduces the videos without problems. But when I try to import them, well it rewinds the tape, it signals the beginning of the import process, but then ... nothing happens. The system is stuck, the preview window shows the importing sign, but nothing happens.
    Can anyone help, please?
    Thank you

Yes, DV is always imported at full quality - via Firewire, of course. It's simply a digital file transfer from tape to your computer. Beware of judging video quality on your laptops' monitor - it's will not look as good, for many tech reasons - it will seem darker and softer. It will look fine once you output it to video again.

  • Can any one fix this problem

Hello i have recently have asked here before about a burning problem that I have encountered. I was told that i needed enough detail for someone to help me. So I will write what the problem is in a 45 page essay. Ok maybe not that detailed. Well first of all i downloaded three videos from my jvc camcorder into imovies. BTW I have a brand new macbook like a month old so yeah everything is new. Well i edited the movies and wanted to burn them in idvd. i dont have a superdrive but bought an external dvd burner from sony. I then made a slideshow of pics in imovie. So i have a total of three medias that i want to burn in idvd. The first video which is a ceremony is 34:37. The second video is a reception is 35:26 long. The third video which is a slideshow is only 4:36. Now twice i have burn a dvd successfully. When this has happen its only the ceremony video and the slideshow that get burned. using an old wedding silver theme. So i tried many times with the three videos there and it gives me the multiplexing error. So at least I know it burns dvds its just i cant get all three of them in there. I am new to mac world and i know for sure though that i didnt do anything different from the two videos.

Before you start the burn process, turn off all energy savers, screen savers, drive sleep, etc.
Any of these will interfere/halt the rendering/MUXing process. Generally you end up with a coaster instead of a playable DVD.
how much free HD space do you have?
On my system, 1-1/2 hours video needs approx 35gb space to render.
Below that, if fails or generates errors.
Older versions of iDVD and iMovie were not happy with 8bit audio.
Had to redo the import in 16 bit. Don't know if 08 fixed that issue.
Might want to create slideshow as a slideshow inside of iDVD instead of as a movie in iMovie.

  • Converting vhs through DAC-100

I'd like to convert VHS cassettes from JVC VCR to imovie HD. I've got a DAC-100 converter (made by datavideo), and I can't see what I'm doing wrong. I'm using the s-video connection. I've checked all that I can (dipswitches are different on datavideo website to the instructions), but I'm just getting a blue screen (it says camera connected, and there's an import button at the bottom of the screen - when I press that it says camera playing). Nothing else happens.
I'm probably not doing something really obvious (I got the DAC=100 because it seemed the least complicated way to transfer vhs - i tried some other means, but I couldn't figure those out either...).
Any assistance would be really appreciated.

Hi Ian and welcome to the forums!
I am not familiar with the DAC-100 (I use a Canopus to do this, which is very similar) but having looked at the specs there is no obvious reason why it shouldn't work.
You need to connect your VHS player to the DAC by S-video (for the video, but this does not not carry sound) and by the red and white RCA cables for the sound. The DAC has to be connected to your Mac by firewire cable or iMovie will not work.
You should set sound as 16 bit, 44,100 hz. You do this in Audio MIDI setup, which is in your utilities folder.
Lastly, read the instructions for how to toggle the dip switches!
In iMovie, if it recognizes the device, when you click on the camera icon it should show up as an option.

  • Cannot export to GR-D270

    I have iMovie HD 6.0.3 and a JVC GR-D270.
iMovie says "iMovie lost contact with camera while exporting to camera"
I have camera in VTR and iMovie recognize it first.
But I can`t export to camera.
    I use DV in/out.

Is my camera not fully compatible w. iMovie?
I can import from camera OK?

    Hi Christian:
The first thing I would try is re-installing QuickTime and then updating to the latest free software version.
If that does not work, try what Beverly Maneatis says in this post:

  • JVC imovie 08 (what to do!)

Hi, I've looked over many forums on the internet, there is still this question that I have that's not answered...
I have a JVC 1080p HDD camera. I have already figured out how to use it in imovie 08 and let me tell you it is the most annoying process.
Now that I have it in imovie 08, edited. I want to export. I tried exporting at 960x540 (knowing that its going to have this lossy quality to it) then I exported it through quicktime, as DV but in 1920x1080... still bad as anything.
I either don't know how to export videos, or i'm just expecting too much of HD Videos.
I've read over forums that say that it's better to use imovie HD (06) for HD DVD. but why?? why can't I get the same thing in imovie 08? isn't it supposed to be an upgrade?
    1) should I use imovie 06 to get better quality (and let me tell you its so much easier to work with JVC and imovie06 because of TOD files).
    2) if I can still get a good quality video with imovie 08. Is it going to take 700minutes to export?? (that's what I got when I wanted to export as H.264 and 1920x1080) that's like I don't know... 11 hours? and i'm guessing its gona take another 700 minutes to burn in iDVD.
By the way I'm using macbook pro intel core 2 duo 2.4GH 2GB ram.
Do I really have to wait THAT long just to get a better quality video to watch on my HDTV. I mean I don't even know if its worth it. I waited a 2.5 hour period to export a 1280x720... and I have to say that is very crappy from what it looks like on my screen, let alone the TV.
    3) what's the best way to export and watch a normal family video in a 1080 HD format without losing any or.. Much of the quality (if I have to).
I'd rather just connect my camera with HDMI and watch it straight off the camera to avoid going through all this.
    Thanks
    Paul.

you need an ext. harddrive.. but a G4 is fully functional

Oh, I agree. Been there, done that.
But the thread title is iMovie 08 with an iBook G4. Plus he's adding in a new camera.
Skimming and real time editing are a stretch with an iBook G4. Now, Movie 6 HD is not a bad fit, but sloooow.

  • IMovie 09 has trouble importing large video files from my JVC HD-40. I am trying to edit files such as these in 09. What should I do? Would buying iMovie 2011 help? I am shooting AVCHD files instead of the other mpeg2 file format.

    Hi,
I am new into the Apple Community. I have a camcorder known as the JVC GZ-HD40 US and I currently am trying to use iMovie 2009 to edit my movies. With my camcorder, I have the choice to use two different video formats: AVCHD or Mpeg2. All my videos are shot in the AVCHD (HD) file format. This camcorder also has a 120 G Hard Drive built into it. When I plug in the camcorder through USB to my MacPro, the Hard Drive of the camcorder shows up as a icon on the desktop. Many of my video clips are at least thirty minutes in length, inside the camcorder. When I try to import in iMovie my video files, it only imports around ten minutes of the video and skips to the end of the clip. I would greatly prefer to use my MacPro desktop to edit movies instead of my Windows 7 computer which seems to work fine. Is there a solution to this problem? Would the new iMovie 2011 application solve this problem? I also have the Final Cut Express to work with, and also, can't get it to work. What should I try doing?

    Hi all,
I have the exact same problem. I've just been to Thailand with my girlfriend, and we recorded a lot of stuff with my brand new Sony HD camcorder. And whenever the we ran out of camcorder memory we just emptied everything onto my HP laptop using the supplied Sony software, which produced m2ts files. When we got home, I realized that my Mac Pro/iMovie09 was not able to import this format. What a huge disappointment! Especially considering the fact that I just bought my mac back in March (my first mac ever) only for video editing and music composing (no problems with music composing, however!).
Well, I needed a solution, so last week I just bought the Voltaic HD converting software (35$), and it works great. No problems. Only thing is that my Mac Pro (quad intel core) had to work 24 hours a day for four straight days/nights in order to finish the converting job - resulting in 434 GB worth of mov-files. This is no problem as such, and the quality is great. BUT it seems rather stupid that this converting has to take place. If I use Sony Vegas on my PC, it works out of the box with my original m2ts-files. And I would really appreciate if Apple would implement a simple import function of m2ts-files in their software - one that would (if necessary) automatically convert the files to mov. Or even better: would work natively with the m2ts-files.
    Best,

  • Important for users of JVC HDD Camcorder and iMovie HD

I've been having problems using iMovie HD to open my JVC HDD camcorder's videos. Some of you have been very kind in pointing me in a few directions. I thought I'd try and return the favor:
I downloaded MPEG Streamclip and the MPEG-2 Playback Component (both of which can be found easily using google), and used Streamclip to export my video files as .dv files - now I'm using iMovie to attend to my videos with no problems (knock on wood). Thanks everyone for your help! Any questions, just ask!

'cause, for sure the JVC HDDcorders record in mpeg2..
in the beginning, mp2 was meant for disk delievry only, but the HDDcorder manufacturers found it as their codec, to compress the hugh sized streams on that 'tiny' harddrives, 'cause there're chips avail, which do the en- and decoding in realtime..
