JVM vs JRE vs Java Plug-In and Yahoo Chat

Hi
I am a little confused as to what is required in the browser to run an applet.
Do I require JVM installed in my browser?
Do I require Java Plug-In installed in my browser?
Do I require JVM installed in my browser?
What is the difference between these three?
My second question is about the version of JDK to use while developing Java Applets. I am planning to make a Chat Application similar to Yahoo chat. For that I made a beta version using JDK 1.4.2 but now the problem is that most of the client browsers have old version installed for e.g. 1.1.4 by Microsoft or 1.2 by Sun.
In this case almost every user that uses my chat applet has to download the latest version from http://java.sun.com/getjava otherwise it the chat applet doesn't work on their browser. And I don't want this to happen because most of the time it takes ages to download and install the latest Java version on client browser. Yesterday on Pentimum 4 having 512 MB RAM and Windows 98 it took almost 45 minutes to download and install which is unacceptable.
If you see the Yahoo chat http://chat.yahoo.com you will see that it is developed in such a way that it supports almost all the browserd without having to install the latest version. This is what I want to achieve and I am looking from your input as to how do I make sure that the client doesn't need to install the latest version (or atleast very few clients need to install latest version). Do I need to make this chat application in an old JDK version for e.g. 1.1.6?

ooppss....I little mistake in my above post. The third question is
Do I require JRE installed in my browser to run applet?

  • Difference between java plug in and JRE

    Hi,

    Thanks in advance, Fred.

    hi,

JRE you install on your computer to run java

The plugin, for the HTML client (eg IE) usually is capable of executing the applets -a subset of java applications. whereas, the standard JVM executes the standalone applications and some network applications developed using RMI feature of Java. It is not capable of executing applets.
It would be inappropriate to go into the details of the differences in the implementations of the two versions.

  • Java Plug-in and IE 6

Has anyone tried to use the Java Plug-in 1.3.1 with IE 6 on Win 2000 or Win XP? If so, does it still work. I'm wondering whether Sun is gonna have to make it's plugin an ActiveX component like Apple had to with its Quicktime plugin.

any ideas on how i can fix this ??

  • Cannot load Java plug-in and access R12 Oracle form from client

Hi, one of my user cannot open Oracle form when accessing R12 environment using IE6. After selecting responsibility and menu, it got stuck after 50% processing when trying to load Java applet. It never got completed even after waiting for 2-3 hours.
Is there any browser setting that needs to be modified? I checked popup blocker and activeX setting. All seem to be in order. Kindly assist. Thanks.

    Hi,
What is the difference between this client and other clients?
Delete the browser cache/history files and check then. If this does not help, enable trace for JRE (as per Note: 549423.1 - How to enable tracing and logging for Sun JRE (Native Plug-in)) and see if it shows any errors when you encounter this issue.

  • Java Plug-in and Java Web Start Will Not Start In JDK 1.4.2_03

I can't get the Java Plug-in or Java Web Start to start in JDK 1.4.2_03, but they did work when I first installed the JDK months ago. When I double-click either icon an hourglass displays for a second and then disappears without opening the window. I don't even get an error message.
I've tried reinstalling the JDK three times. On the last reinstall, I followed some instructions on how to completely remove the JDK. Here's the URL of the instructions I followed:

    Strangely JBuilder stopped working too.

  • Use 2 jre versions (Java 5.x and Java 6.x) on diferent web pages.

    On windows XP SP3.
I need use on internet explorer 7 and firefox 3, 2 differents JRE versions for two diferent servers
    example:
    - "www.site1.com" needs java 5.x (don't work with java 6.x)
    - "www.site2.com" needs java 6.x (don't work with java 5.x)
If i have installed both versions, internet explorer and firefox even uses java 6.x, and i only can use java 5.x if uninstall java 6.x
I need use to default use: java 6.x; except for "www.site1.com" that i need use java 5.x
How can use both JRE versions?

Questions: Do you plan to use the same web browser? The earlier applet running on JRE 1.5.x cannot run on 1.6 ? Sun puts forth a lot of effort in attempt to ensure that applets are forwards compatible.

  • FRM-0 error w/Java Plug-In and JRE_1.5.0_13

We are having problems running Forms 10gR2 over IE 6.02, using JRE 1.5.0_13. We've been running fine with JRE 1.5.0_06, but JRE 6 has been finding its way onto our user machines, and the Java 6 plugin forces our forms to run in JRE 6, which causes definite problems.
I've found Sun's workaround, allowing Forms to request JRE 1.5, causing the form to run using the most recent release of JRE 1.5 installed on the client machine. This is great, except with JRE 1.5.0_06 installed, Sun displays a warning -- each time our application is loaded -- indicating that we are not running the most recent version of JRE 1.5, and that installing said version will prevent this warning from appearing in the future.
So we tried installing JRE 1.5.0_13, and as promised, the warning no longer appears. (Now, there appears a one-time warning, indicating that the application is running in an older version of Java.) Unfortunately, JRE 1.5.0_13 gives the same problems we were seeing with JRE 6!
Specifically, we are running a custom Java bean, that automates MS Word. The bean is loading, but at one point a FRM-0: error is raised, with no further details. No stacktrace in the Java console, no trace file on the app server, or on the database.
I'm fairly certain that the lack of information is caused by an unhandled Java exception that's occurring in a form-side PL/SQL package. I've seen how to handle these, but have yet to add such handling to my code. Given that I can run the same code in a previous version, I am not sure that handling the error will allow my code to proceed normally.
In the meantime, while reviewing the Forms 10gR2 Client Platform Statement of Direction, I'm noticing that Oracle has not certified IE7 past JRE 1.5.0_06. Although I am running IE6, I'm wondering what the problem Oracle encountered with 1.5.0_06? I can run without problems using JRE 1.5.0_13 on Firefox, but my organization refuses to deploy Firefox to our end users.
Any suggestions, or similar experiences that anyone could share would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Eric Adamson

It's getting almost impossible to keep the jre from installing
6 even if you install the jre 5 from your own server. It somehow is
immediately redirecting it to install the latest jre 6 from sun.
And even worse, it will try to install google desktop and google toolbar
    with it! unbelievable!
If a person knew all the possible sun download and update
domain names then one could perhaps stop this from happening
by putting appropriate entires in the hosts file so that it couldn't
    reach sun.

  • Need 2 versions of Java Plug in, and cannot get that to work

I need both 1.3.1 and 1.4. Java plug ins on my PC to access two different programs. For some stupid reason one of the programs I run on my machine only accepts 1.3.1 version to run properly. The other program will not run on anything below 1.4.
I am tired of installing and uninstalling either versions when I need to access these programs. What can I do.

Install both versions in a different directory. Now create two batch files / shell scripts for each of the programs: one batch file will manually invoke the java/javaw command in the 1.3 installation and the other will manually call the java/javaw command in the 1.4 installation. Using these two scripts you should be able to run both programs.

  • Help!! J2SE 1.4.1 Not working on pagebuilder and yahoo chats...help ple

    hi
I am having trouble with loading geocities pagebuilder which uses java. It used to load ok but not anymore...also i cannot access yahoo chats which also use java...yahoo tells me that it might be my java not running properly....
can anyone assist me to correct this problem?
    thanks
    mike

It is not a problem with Java.. It is a problem with Yahoo.. See this below from another forum..
"Alright, this is why the chat applet won't load (in anything but old
versions of ie and netscape). Yahoo's applet is out of date. It uses
the older versions of Java, of which there are numerous amounts. It
used to be that when new classes (or functions) were created for Java,
each browser would input them into the language differently. There
were so many different types of Java that it was a real pain to
    programers.
Recently Sun Microsystems (the creators of Java) re-created Java and
forced all browsers to use it. IE refused, so forget about them
completeley, they don't support Java, and that's where all those
monopoly suites started. The new Netscape browsers (6.0 and up)
support java, and so does Opera. The problem is that many of the sites
that have applets either didn't want to update their sites, or they
didn't know that Java had changed. You must find out if the site
supports the Netscape or IE version of Java and use an old Netscape or
IE browser to view the site.
The consequence for Opera and Netscape is that they use JAVA 1.3 onwards so cant load yahoo chat. Internet Explorer will run chat as long as you use Virtual Machine by MS (which is no longer available cos they dont make it any more), but if you try to run Java 1.4 in IE it will not work.
So basically, Yahoo chat is not written in Proper Java, and will not
run on any browser running Java? Only old browsers using either early
netscape Java or Internet Explorer running the now defunct Virtual
    Machine.
Wether or not Yahoo actually bother to rewrite the software is another
matter, of course this means that once everyone in the world has
updated to Java 1.4 and above (which they have to, cos it's the only
option, opera and netscape use it, and Internet explorer now doesnt
even support java properly) Yahoo will simply not work at all....."
The solution to this is to use Microsoft Virtual Machine for accesing Yahoo chat etc, (if you have a copy cos its hard to find now) and hope that all these people rewrite there software to support java properly.

  • Java virtual machine and yahoo/pogo

i am trying to play yahoo and pogo games, and it pops up that i need to download java virtual machine for it to load, i do, then it goes to MS website saying i need a more recent version of JVM to get to that screen. I got MSIE 6. i need to play these games. please help. help.

I just experienced this issue and found a solution. What operating systems are you running. I am on Windows XP. I downloaded Java Virtual Machine (which can be found on this website) and it worked fine until I allowed my system to receive an update on the Microsoft Virtual Machine. This is a brand new computer and had the windows update alerts. I had to restore my system to the day before I allowed update and everything is working again. I suggest downloading Java virtual Machine. No one else on here was helping and Gateway had no clue how to help me. After three weeks I figured this out by myself.....I hope this fix works for you!

  • Sun Java Plug-in Required Installing the Sun Java Plug-in, version 1.6.0_19

    Hi,
am new to this thread, excuse if any issues in posting,
my pblm is am running my application,
    Sun Java Plug-in Required
The Sun Java Plug-in must be installed on your local machine in order to run this workbench. The Sun Java Plug-in can be downloaded from the following directory:
    /dsworkbench/clientinstall
Please contact your system administrator to verify the location of the client installations.
Installing the Sun Java Plug-in, version 1.6.0_19
The Sun Java Plug-in is required to run the WebLogic version of this workbench. To install:
Download the file jre-6u19-windows-i586.exe and execute it.
On the license terms screen, select Custom setup and click Accept.
If you want to change the default installation directory, click Change and specify a different directory. Once the installation directory is set, click Next.
Click Next to accept the default browser registrations.
    Disabling Auto-Update Capability
By default, the Java Control Panel is configured to automatically download and update to newer releases of the Java Plug-in as they become unavailable.
It is advisable to turn off this feature so that compatibility between the Java Plug-in and the workbench is maintained. To turn off automatic updates:
Open the Windows Control Panel, and click Java. The Java Control Panel displays.
    Click the Update tab.
Under the Update Notification area, deselect Check for Updates Automatically.
"Java Update - Warning" dialog box displays. Click Never Check.
Click OK to save and then close the Java Control Panel.I have done the same and I restarted browser and my machine, and when I relogined to the application still the same message is appearing,
I don't know if I need to set the environment path, but I have done it. any pointers will be helpful

This tends to be a 32 bits / 64 bits problem. The runtime must match the architecture of the browser you're using; so if it is a 64 bits browser, you MUST have a 64 bits runtime. If it is a 32 bits browser you MUST have a 32 bits runtime. You can install both and cover all cases.

  • Java Plug Ins

What is the security problem with Java plug ins and do I need to disable Java plug ins on my Mac computers?

The newly discovered zero-day flaw in Java 7 is so serious that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has warned users to disable or uninstall it, and Apple has disabled the Java 7 plugin on Macs through its OS X anti-malware system, in order to protect users from a potentially serious security issue.
You should disable Java (if not already done) until either the US Department of Homeland Security, or Oracle, declare it safe and Apple restore the facility. Javascript should not be disabled (it has nothing to do with Java).
However, if you need the Jave 6 JRE and plug-in, MadMAC0 has posted at
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/20107182?ac_cid=tw123456#20107182
Apple has also posted (Oct 22/12) the approved solution for restoring the Java 6 plug-in:
Java for OS X 2012-006: How to re-enable the Apple-provided Java SE 6 applet plug-in and Web Start functionality.

  • Java plug-in fatal error

When I try to open an applet on a site I get the message "Java plug-in fatal error- several Java virtual machines running in the same process caused an error". Checking my add/remove program I see that I have J2SE runtime environment 5.0 updates 7,9,10 and 11. Java 2 runtime environment standard edition version 1.3.1_02, 1.4.1_01, and 1.4.2_03. Also Java runtime environment 6 update 1. I'm running Windows XP service pack 2. Hope someone has a solution to my problem.

This is an existing bug request:
    http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6516270
Providing this information could be handy:
    1) Does this occur on all browser(s) which includes Firefox, Mozilla other then Internet Explorer
    2) What is the outcome of running testvm applet:
    http://java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml
    3) Does this error start appearing after updating to 6u01
    4) Have you attempted running the applet after deleting Java Plug-in and browser cache
This could be an issue with memory management on the system.
    The possible workaround(s) are:
    1) Try setting virtual memory as System managed:
Windows xp users start--->control panel--->System--->advanced---->Performance(setting)---->Advanced---->virtualmemory(change)--->Click system managed size--->set then Ok restart your computer
    2) Set JRE parameter less then 3/4 of actual physical memory present in the system.
For example, 512 MB if RAM is 1024 MB.
    3) Disable any unwanted/new/confusing add-on in the browser (IE7).
For example, Windows Live Sign-in add-on can restrict Java functioning due to unknown reasons. Disabling same, if installed could be helpful.

  • Why does my Firefox not have a Java plug-in?

My question is similar to "Java Plug-in for JRE7u21?" but all the suggestions there that worked are for Windows, and I'm on a Mac, and I don't want to hijack that thread. For the record, that thread is [/questions/958847]. aw
I have Mac OS X 10.8.5 Mountain Lion, Firefox 24.0, which says it's up to date, and Java 7 update 45, also up to date. I only want answers for Mac OS X, not Windows, not Linux.
The online Java test works OK in Safari but not in Firefox. Firefox thinks Java is not installed. There's no "Java Applet Plug-in" in the plug-ins list.
Since Safari is OK, I assume there's a bug in Firefox. Can we narrow it down by identifying which combinations of versions (of Mac OS X, Firefox and Java) have the Java plug-in and which don't?

Security is a bad answer. Safari allows Java to run if the user allows it. Why can't Firefox do the same? If Firefox has security vulnerabilities that Safari doesn't have, how long will it take to fix them?
What's all this about the Java Deployment Toolkit? I'm talking about the JRE, the Java Runtime Environment. I'm not a developer, I'm not an administrator, I'm a user, and I want to use Firefox. Silly me.
Sorry for the irritation. I'm expletive deleted tired of people telling me what I can and can't do for my own safety.
