JWS 1.4 app alongside JVM 1.3 apps?

Hi
We're running a JWS deployed app. which requires >= Java 1.4 version. The problem is that some of our users also need to run another app. which requires Java 1.3 version as default JRE on the host. Is there any way of differentiating these VMs so that both apps can co-reside on one host?
One thought is to install 1.4 whitout setting it as default VM on the host's system, is that possible?
Thanks

Open Java Web Start Application Manager. Go to File menu and then perferences. Choose tab Java and add both JVM 1.3 and JVM 1.4.
You might have to locate javaw.exe for both versions.

  • Multiple JVM not closed

    Hi,
I've noticed that sometimes the JVMs are not closed by JWS or the app launched via JWS.
Does something goes wrong with me or is it a real known problem ?
    thanks,
    ionel

Swing applications must call system.exit() explicitly to close dow the VM. Because Java Web Start turns non-swing apps into swing apps, it is possible that some applications that will
properly shutdown when run stand-alone will not due so when run under java web start.
To get around this allways call System.exit() explicitly.

  • Java.util.zip.ZipException error when building

    Good Day All,
I am a newbie and this is my first JWS deployment. I have an app that I am writing in Netbeans 6.1 that I want to deploy via JWS. The app accesses five different JAR libraries and that is where my troubles started. I thought that I needed to figure a way to configure Netbeans so the libraries would be deployed with my app JAR so it would run correctly using JWS.
I was trying to get things working and now my problem is that when I build I am getting the following error:
    init:
    deps-jar:
    compile:
    Copy libraries to C:\Java\DataMed\dist\lib.
To run this application from the command line without Ant, try:
    java -jar "C:\Java\DataMed\dist\DataMed.jar"
    jnlp:
    jnlp-init-generate-master:
C:\Java\DataMed\nbproject\jnlp-impl.xml:61:  The following error occurred while executing this line:
C:Java\DataMed\nbproject\jnlp-impl.xml:386:  java.util.zip.ZipException:  error in opening zip file
BUILD FAILED (total time: 0seconds)Scrolling to line 386 in the jnlp-impl.xml file it says:
componentsprop="jnlp.components">I futzed with my options so much I can't seem to figure out how to get everything reset so I can get a clean build ! As a newbie to Netbeans I sometimes have difficulty figuring out where all the different things are hidden ... I **think** it all went bad when I was working on the Properties > Libraries > Compile > Compile-time Libraries but I can't remember.
So I have two questions really:
    1) How can I resolve the ZipException error? I suspect it is one of the JAR libraries but how can I tell ?
    2) How do I get JWS to find my five libraries ? I now suspect that I am supposed to upload the five libraries to the webserver and then in my JNLP it will have links to the libraries in the <resources> part of the code. Is that correct ?
Edited by: DBirdManAR on Aug 10, 2008 7:22 AM
Rather than spend to much time figuring this out, I just used my revert modifications through my SVN to go back to a previous version that builds correctly.

    Hi,
I have the same problem but I cannot solve it.
    Help much appreciated.

  • Dynamic commandline parameters

    Greetings,
I have developed a custom client side application that is used to upload a data file to a servlet and have the servlet convert the document to an internal data format and send back the file name to the client. The client then uses this filename to launch the native browser with a servlet URL that includes the filename parameter so the user can use our webapp with prepopulated data.
This client app is called my multiple vendor's applications and requires commandline parameters indicating which vendor is sending the file as well as the filename argument. This is so:
    1) I can read the file off of the users disk and stream it to the server via http.
    2) I know what conversion to perform on the file once it gets there (file data types vary significantly by vendor).
I'm curious about the advantages of using JWS for this app as it is difficult to distribute changes to our application, though they occur infrequently.
I can see a solution to the problem of passing the vendor argument by deploying different versions of the JWS app with different arguments in the JNLP file and giving each vendor a different url but I am not sure how to handle the filename issue. The filename is created dynamically by the vendor application and passed when the client application is invoked.
Is there a way to specify commandline arguments dynamically to JWS? A search through the forum seems to indicate no.
Is there another way to dynamically do this? Is it feasible to invoke a the jnlp servlet via JWS and pass it a parameter and have it dynamically generate the JNLP file, e.g.:
    javaws <myurl>/myapp.jnlp?file=/thefile.txt
and have the servlet do the substitution:
    <param name="filename" value="$$file"/>
    to generate:
    <param name="filename" value="/thefile.txt"/>
If anyone has any experience with doing something like this. I'd love to hear back.

I'm having the same problem. Did you ever find a solution?
    Thanks

  • Help with publish an applet on the web

I have a few java programs I would like to share with family and friends. I recently learned to convert my applications to Applets, now I am looking to post these on my blog. I know how to embed the applet into an html, and did successfully in my PC. However, when trying to do the same online, I run into problems:
-Cannot find a server where to upload the applet. Google doesn't seem to do it, and I tried some others without luck.
-I upload the .class files of my applet to box.net, and copy the URL. In the html of my blog, I use the <applet code = "someURL", but the applet fails since it is unable to find any other class.
I know that applets are common throughout the web, and that it should be within the reach of an individual programmer like myself (with no budget). If someone who has published an applet could give a short summary of the process, I would much appreciate.
    Specifically, I am looking for:
Which file hosting service did you use?
Did you upload as a jar file, or the .class files individually as I did?
Did you have to pay for the service?
    Thank you

    >
I have a few java programs I would like to share with family and friends. >Perhaps launching the programs using [Java Web Start|http://java.sun.com/javase/technologies/desktop/javawebstart/index.jsp] (JWS) will fulfil the requirement. A launch using JWS is generally simpler than embedding an applet in HTML. (Note that JWS can launch both (J)Frame and (J)Applet based apps., though a frame works/looks slightly better).
JWS can launch apps., from a link in a web page..
As an aside. If you do not intend to use JWS please state that, and explain why.  This is much easier to explain for JWS launch.

OTOH, I do not know if his site is 'free' or 'paid'. Perhaps Google's free sites limit what you can upload.

What speaks volumes instead is if you link to the broken applet page.
But I will comment this. The code attribute should not be any URL. It should be the 'fully qualified class name'. If the applet is trying to get classes from another site, it would do that by specifying a codebase.

If someone who has published an applet could give a short summary of the process, I would much appreciate.>If you can find a place to host the applet itself, but want the HTML elsewhere, try this experiment..
I have a demo applet at my site, explained/linked in [http://pscode.org/test/docload/|http://pscode.org/test/docload/]. It uses the applet at [http://pscode.org/test/docload/docload.jar|http://pscode.org/test/docload/docload.jar]. The test is to try and load that applet at your site.
So try this in your HTML.
    <APPLET
      CODE="org.pscode.eg.docload.DocumentLoader"
      ARCHIVE="docload.jar"
      CODEBASE="http://pscode.org/test/docload/"
      WIDTH="600"
      HEIGHT="500"
ALT="<P>This applet requires Java to be enabled!  Check the browser options or see your SysAdmin.">
<P>This page requires Java!  Get it free from <A HREF='http://www.java.com/'>www.java.com</A>.</P>
</APPLET>(That is actually the copy/pasted applet element from the applet page at my site, but with the codebase changed.)
    >
Did you upload as a jar file, or the .class files individually as I did?>Rarely I use loose class files with applets, but it can be a hassle if they are in packages. It might be that cross-site access requires archives, but JWS certainly requires archives.

    Gerald,
a couple of comments on the FAQ regarding
Q: Can I use JWS for Intranet apps?
    file:/// works where file:// doesn't
also including the path to the .jnlp file in double quotes allows to use path containg empty spaces.
    example:
    javaws "file:///C:\Program Files\Java Web
    Start\.javaws\cache\http\Dlocalhost\P80\DMclient\AMdemo.jnlp"

  • IsResourceCached problem

    Hi,
I need to check independently of JWS if my app.jar is up-to-date (clients are mostly disconnected, due to dial-up access, so the app is offline-allowed. Instead of the error-prone external ways of dialing, our app is supposed to do it automatically. Being off-line jws can't check for update, the app should do it.)
The app starts calling DownloadService's isResourcCached(url, null) method that seems to return false. I am sure that app.jar is the same on the server side and in the cache and that the url is OK.
I don't understand why this call fails (especially that I suspect jws itself use this mechanism), nor have I any idea how to solve this.
    I need your help!
    Thanks!

      boolean cached6_0_0 = ds.isPartCached( "6_0_0");
      boolean cachedResource6_0_0 = ds.isResourceCached( url6_0_0, "6_0_0" );
boolean cachedExtension6_0_0 = ds.isExtensionPartCached( urlExt, "", "6_0_0" );But I had no luck at all yet with one of those.
And the stuff is in my cache. :-(

  • Controlled upgrade of application

    Hi,
I'm considering the use of jws for our app. However, in our current distribution application we can control the distribution of a new version. We first distribute it to a pilot site where the new version is tested and afterwards distribute it to the other clients in a controlled way.
Is this kind of distribution possible in jws or will every client platform immediately receive the new version when launching the app from the desktop ?
    Thx for any help.
    Roger.

At JavaOne this year, there was a presentation from a bank that controlled the distribution of their JWS applications. Here's an intial link from Hans Muller discussing this presentation. HTH.

  • Passing dynamic cmdline arguments to app deployed by JWS offline

    Hi,
i want to deploy my java application through JWS for the benefit of autoupdating.
my app, when started, needs a cmdline argument that the user supplies. It's a filename, so it can be anything.
I cannot use the <argument> tag in JNLP file to specify the filename because it's not static.
I saw some postings of using JSP on the server side to dynamically put the value into the JNLP file, but the thing is I don't want the app to have to go through the web server to get the dynamic arg - what if the server is offline?
    Any solutions?
    thanks,
    LMY

    thanks,
LMYTry starting Webstart and your app not by using javaws.exe, but instead by appending your desired args to something like this and execute:
    java.exe "-Djnlpx.home=C:\Programme\Java Web Start" "-Djnlpx.heapsize=NULL,NULL" "-Djnlpx.jvm=C:\Programme\JavaSoft\JRE\1.3.1\bin\javaw.exe" "-Djava.security.policy=file:C:\Programme\Java Web Start/javaws.policy" "-DtrustProxy=true" -classpath "C:\Programme\Java Web Start\javaws.jar;C:\Programme\Java Web Start\javaws-l10n.jar" com.sun.javaws.Main "file:C:/Dokumente und Einstellungen/AJans/isa.jnlp"
Of course you have to change the given args to your preferences.
The given args before the com.sun.javaws.Main are obligatory.
    Hope this helps,

  • Offline deploying of JWS app

    Hello,
I have pretty big JWS app, it's loading properly, it's running properly and generally speaking everything is just fine. But the as you focus on the word "big", you will get the point---it has about 30MB and it is to be supposed to run on mobile laptops with GPRS connection to internet. In other words: very slow connection. So the initial download could be very long and problematic, besides not every worker is familiar enough with "technical problems", so it may happen that on some terminals it would fail to initialize properly. So I (we) wanted to issue installation CD to our workers with the complete installation. And the the question: is there a way to preinstall JWS app not directly from host and via JNLP file, but from local files?

    Hi
You could pre-install the bulk of the jars into the lib folder of the JRE on the laptop, leave a single small jar on the server to act as the booting application. All your classes should then be available because the JVM boot path automatically includes all jars stored in the jre/lib folder...
The booting class could event do a getClassLoader().getInstance("your.class.name") to check to see if your custom jars are available. If they are not then it could say something like "Sorry you need to install the software from the CD befor running this application"
If your not comfortable installing the extra jars in the jre/lib folder you could (alternately) install the jars in another location on the machine and invoke a new instance of the JVM with those jars on the boot path (using the System.exec(""))

  • How do I run multiple java apps in one JVM to reduce memory use?

    Hi all,
I saw an article either on the web or in a magazine not too long ago about how to "detect" if the app is already running, and if so, it hands off the new instance to the already running JVM, which then creates a thread to run the Java app in. As it turns out, my app will be used in an ASP environment, through Citrix. We may have as many as 50 to 100 users running the same app, each with their own unique user ID, but all using the same one server to run it on. Each instance eats up 25MB of memory right now. So the question is if anybody knows of a URL or an app like this that can handle the process of running the same (or even different Java) apps in one JVM as separate threads, instead of requring several instances of the JVM to run? I know this article presented a fully working example, and I believe I know enough to do it but I wanted ot use the article as a reference to make sure it is done right. I know that each app basically would use the same one "launcher" program that would on first launch "listen" to a port, as well as send a message through the port to see if an existing launcher was running. If it does, it hands off the Java app to be run to the existing luancher application and shuts down the 2nd launching app. By using this method, the JVM eats up its normal memory, but each Java app only consumes its necessary memory as well and doesn't use up more JVM instance memory.
    Thanks.

  • Running multiple java-apps in single JVM?

We have about 125 Citrix clients running on 5 Citrix Servers. We are investigating a new very big development project which will cover about 10 main projects with 15 Applications each. The complete project will be written in Java.
Basically, each module will have it's own JVM. BUt, when each client runs a couple of modules, the servers will surely run out of memory...
I searched for way's to run different modules within 1 single JVM but it seems to be 'not done', because of 'System.exit()', 'Static Variable' probs to name only 2.
Any idea's on how to implement this?
    thanks.

    thanks for the reply.
Yes, I assume the server will run out of memory.
    1) Our citrix servers are consuming about 3/4th of their 4Gb memory capacity without any java_application running.
    2) Each of our 5 Citrix servers has 25 users active
    3) Each JVM takes about 20mb memory
    4) Each user will run at least 3 app's simultaneously
    Abouve results in 3*20=60Mb / user * 25= 1,5Gb memory extra needed.
Can you give me an example of a Thread.sleep(60000) test_pgm?
and/or an example for a "classloader" program to launch each app in its ow sandbox (in same JVM)?
(eventually a link to get more info on this)
    thanks

  • Deploying Existing Web App With New JWS

    Hi all,
I've been banging my head against a brick wall for a few days on this, but I'm sure it must be something trivial. Hopefully someone here will have some advice...
In a nutshell, I'm working on an existing web application, running on Weblogic 8.1, in a clustered environment. I've added a new JWS web service which is largely standalone, but it uses controls from elsewhere in the application.
Locally, on my development box, it works perfectly - I can run it from Weblogic Workshop, and see the handy test form to run the web service, as well as seeing the WSDL by pointing my browser at http://localhost:7001/app/path/Service.jws?WSDL
However, I've now built the EAR for the whole application, and deployed it to our test environment (clustered - a mirror (hopefully!) of the production environment).
When I go to http://test-box:7002/app/path/Service.jws?WSDL I see a nasty-looking error page that looks like:
    WebService ERROR
    Error:
    null
    Stack Trace:
    null
When I try the same URL without the ?WSDL on the end (so just http://test-box:7002/app/path/Service.jws), I see the nice Weblogic Web Service page, showing that it knows there's something there, but it has no content, just the 'Overview' tab, followed by:
    Public Information
    about Service.jws Web Service
and that's it - locally I see the same thing, but with options for viewing the WSDL and testing the service.
I'm confident that the URL is correct, because if I put rubbish in, I get a different error message.
Reading around, I've found lots of resources for 'how to deploy a web service to a production environment' for Weblogic 7, but much less for 8.1. I've seen references to jwsCompile, for example, which I think is specific to 7, because I can't find any references to it in the 8.1 docs, but perhaps that's wrong?
I'm pretty sure there's a configuration setting I'm missing, or a step in the deployment, but I'm stuck as to what it is!
    Any advice gratefully received.
Edit: I should have mentioned that there are two other JWS's in the same app, both of which have the same symptoms as my new one (they've been there for a while, but are unused).

My gut reaction is that there might be an issue with the frontend settings not set up correctly, see 9.2 docs in lieu of 8.1 docs:
    http://edocs.bea.com/wls/docs92/webserv/setenv.html#wp220521
You should also open a support case as they could probably identify your issue quickly.
