K330 sata port question

Hello all, Im new to the forum and to Lenovo.
I bought a K330-77273GU last week.
I would like to add another HD and would like to know if the sata ports on the motherboard are 3 Mb/s or 6 Mb/s?
Two ports  are red (being used for the current HD and CD drive) and the two spare ports are orange.
Thanks.

hey K330_Owner,
From : http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/icbook.pdf
there will be two 3 Gb/s and two 6 Gb/s sata cables.

  • K8N Neo2 question about overclocking and sata ports 1 & 2

    Hi guys,
I know that when overclocking, sata ports 1 & 2 cannot be locked like sata ports 3 & 4, and therefore hard drives on ports 1 & 2 can be corrupted.  However, I would like to understand what is failing when the unlocked ports get overclocked.  Is it the motherboard that makes mistakes or is it the drive?  Since the ports on the K8N Neo2 are Sata 150 (correct me if i'm wrong), would buying a sata 300 drive be able to survive overclocking?  Also, I would like to know the effect of overclocked sata ports on dvd burners as opposed to hard drives.  I am looking to buy two new Dvd drives/burners for this board and I would like to avoid buying IDE again.
So, can anyone answer the above questions in detail?
    Thanks,
    Steven

But is it the HDD itself that fails at the higher frequency?  Or is it the HDD controller on the motherboard that fails?  What about DVD drives?  And what if the HDD is SATA 300 instead of SATA 150?

  • Which of my sata ports should I use?

I have this harddrive [http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00471G8CC/] but I want to make sure I'm using the best sata port for it. My desktop is the CQ5720F, here's the link to the motherboard specs [http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02552467&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en...]
It says I have sata 1 and 2 under "internal connectors" but I have 4 sata ports. So that's the problem, I don't know which one to use. Right now I have it plugged into the one labeled "Sata 3". What should I do?
    Thanks, Travis

The specs are incorrect. All 4 SATA ports are the same and are SATA2.0 ports. I doesn't really matter what port you use, however I would put the main hard drive on #1, secondary HDDs on #2 and #3, and the CD/DVD on #4.

  • SATA HDD question

    Hi ppl
    Quick question.
When I built my PC  I used a HDD with a normal P-ATA connection with the IDE cable.
I am building a PC for my friend and was wondering if I should get a SATA drive.
R they rly that much faster or is it just a gimick?
Also when u install one for the first time and boot up is the SATA drive automatically recognised like a  normal P-ATA drive.
Sorry new to this. Thanks for your help
    SAspaz

    Hey again
Umm alright I dont rly mind if I get either of the drive now. Just a quick question. When I built my rig I just attached the P-ATA HDD using a normal IDE cable and then when I booted I just installed windows xp via CD etc and it just detected my IDE HDD was there.
Now if I built the new PC with a SATA drive and I connect the SATA port and the power to the drive and boot up the PC. Will it automatically recognise the HDD and I can install windows normally or wot. Is there anything I would have to do differently for SATA compared the PATA
Cheers guys. Noob wen it comes to the SATA drives.

  • HELP ! A FATAL BUG ! ! ! What`s wrong with the SATA port ? ? ?

My MacBook (MD103) got a serious bug here, PLEASE HELP ME !
I changed my main drive to a Crucial 256GB SSD and memory to Micron 16GB, and I also removed the optical drive. The optical drive has been replaced by the original Toshiba HDD. Then, the question has came out! The OS hourly report Errors and restart. Finally, the HDD icon will disappear from Finder and the drive will be changed into a read-only disk (Under the Windows OS installed by BOOTCAMP). Then, I have to format the drive.
BUT the question still happen AGAIN AND AGAIN! Though, I changed the Toshiba Drive by a WesternDigital one (Model. LPVT 500G), which is the most energy-efficient notebook HDD, BUT the question take place AGAIN when I listening an iTunes music ! ! !  (The music tone was reapted again and adain, and the OSX was shut down in a sudden, without any operation)
I searched some information and did some attempt. The OS can work well when I change the second drive by a old 250GB HDD, but I really can`t use such a slow and small drive for work, and I have to pray for my data every time when I press the power button. So, please help me! Improve the SATA port power management or someting else, THE BUG CAN BE SOLVED BY YOU, THE GREATEST ENGINEERS.
Please let me know the progress, THANK YOU ! ! !

    Firstly, Thanks!
I've checked it and if the question didn`t occur, the disk can work well. The I/O speed can reach 113MB/s. And someone said it causes by SATA port power supply.

  • How diagnose the extra SATA ports on the Mac Pro (early 2008) logic board?

I have had two SSDs in an OWC multi-mount in the second optical bay, one for Lion and one for Photoshop scratch. However, I recently began having intermittent boot problems. Sometimes there wouldn't be an Apple symbol upon boot/reboot, yet sometimes there would and the computer would boot. I have not experienced any crashes, kernel panics or such.
I thought the Lion SSD was faulty so installed Mountain Lion on the scratch drive, a Mercury Electra 3G which I have recently received as a replacement from OWC due to a previously faulty SSD. However, immediately there were boot problems from that SSD.
I have a feeling there is something wrong with the two extra SATA ports on the logic board. I am now booted off the Lion SSD placed in an external USB enclosure, which works but is a bit slower (I will get a bracket to install that SSD in the ordinary internal bays).
My question is how I can diagnose the logic board generally and specifically the extra SATA ports. I have Tech Tool Pro 6. I also thought I had AHT but on the Leopard DVD 1, which came with the Mac Pro (10.5.2) and on which AHT is supposed to be there is no trace of AHT. Odd. Booting from that DVD will only bring up the Leopard installer.
Btw I do think the Electra is broken because I am unable to boot ML from it in the USB enclosure.
Grateful for any ideas how to check my logic board.
    Cheers
    /p

If you could move the drives easily to another location then you could test the drives and also - make backup images! just to be safe. SSDs and their firmware and problems are almost all too common, even this last June a large issue with SandForce which OWC uses in some/most of theirs, and I get the feeling they are usually behind in testing and sending out firmware updates.
Corsair, Crucial and Intel have all had issues since it surfaced in May.
Diagnosing a motherboard with Apple Service Diagnostic CD is one thing. Swapping out SATA cables though no. WD Lifeguard does check communication to an SATA device drive and can - but you need to see the device in Windows or their boot CD (linux I imagine). Quite good utility though maybe not for an SSD.

  • 6 SATA ports?

I have 2 SATA related questions regarding Mac Pros (especially the currently shipping model as that will be what I will purchase). Both are what I would consider rumors since I haven't seen anything official.
The first is that I have heard that there are actually 6 SATA ports inside in the MP (4 for the HDDs and 2 extra which i've heard are buried under either the fan assembly or behind the optical drive cage). True?
The second is that the currently shipping MPs have moved to SATA optical drives rather than IDE. Again, true? And if so, are they using the extra two ports that may or may not exist?
    Thanks,

    Great. Thanks

    Hitman47, welcome to the forum.
All of the add-on SATA cards that I found require a PCI Express x4, 8 or 16 to operate properly.  Your motherboard only has one PCIe x16 slot and three PCIe x1 slots.  Therefore, I don't believe that you can add a card to your system.

  • Picking the right SATA ports for Hard Drives.

With in a week I'll be puting together my new system, I'm currently buying and ordering parts now.
    K8N NEO4 Platinum (Non SLI)
    Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego
    Saphire/ATI x850XT
    Enermax 24pin 535w PS
    (4) Corsair 512Mb XMS DDR400
    (1) Raptor 74GB 10000rpm SATA/150 (primary C: drive)
    (1) Maxtor 300GB 7000rpm SATA/150
    (2) WD 100Gb IDE drives
    (1) Plextor DVD burner IDE
    (1) Plextor CD burner IDE
My question: As you can see, I have two SATA devices and four IDE devices. I won't be using RAID.
Which two SATA ports should I use? I don't quite understand the differences. Maybe not a concern?
For the IDE bus, should I make the two hard drives primary on each IDE bus, and have the burners secondary?
    Any suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks!

I just built my machine using the K8N Neo4 Platinum myself.
I am using the first two Nvidia SATA ports (the purple colored). I think it is easier to connect your SATAs on there.
Make your optical drives on one IDE channel and your other 2 hard drives likewise. Make your DVD burner the Master and set your CD burner as a Slave. Same with your IDE hard drives. Set either/or WD to a master and the other to a slave.
Those are just my suggestions, as there are many different combinations to plug these IDE devices in. You are primarily looking for best performance since devices sharing an IDE cable won't get top performance (as in the Slave devices).

  • Mac Pros extra two internal sata ports broken since Leopard 10.5??

I have a Mac Pro and according to xlr8yourmac.com and the newertech website, there are four sata ports for your hard drives PLUS an additional two more sata ports directly on the motherboard. Through a complicated and difficult disassembly, it is possible to dissect your mac pro and install their cable which they sell for about $30, and get at the rear of your mac pro housing connectors for these two internal sata ports. In short, it's nothing more than an extension cable that fits into a neat housing at the back of the mac pro. You can then plug up to two esata drives into those jacks and they are basically hooked into the macpro motherboard. I ordered this cable and it worked splendidly since 10.4.8 and for 10.4.9 without any issue (that I could tell). I was even able to raid them together etc etc. (edit to be clear I mean I had two Lacie 500Gb drives with esata, firewire 800, 400 and USB 2 on them).
When I installed 10.5 it was all broken!! What a disaster. I can't use these drives on the firewire bus (which by the way they work fine on) because I am already tieing up that with other devices and drives. I need these extra two buses, plus they were **** fast before- I guess it's the same bus as the internal drives get.
I have contacted Lacie - no luck - and also newertech, and did so again today, but so far no luck, and apple, no luck and even submitted a feedback request back when we were on 10.5.1 (just released at that time), and no luck. I hoped 10.5.2 would restore this functionality.
I was told Apple do not normally go out of their way to kill unintended functionality but could this be the case on this occasion?

www.xlr8yourmac.com its over my head but...
A Copy of the April 23rd, 2007 news page post is below (in reply to eSATA Extender cables (w/PCI slot bracket) from Newer Tech for use with the 2 unused ports on the Mac Pro motherboard.)
" this may be of some interest for your readers.
From the Intel 631xESB/632xESB I/O Controller Hub data sheet:
    "Hot-Plug Operation
Dynamic Hot-Plug (for example, surprise removal) is not supported by the SATA host controller. However, using the PCS register configuration bits and power management flows, a device can be powered down by software, and the port can then be powered off, allowing removal and insertion of a new device. "
(I asked if he knew of any way to do that in OS X.)
the SATA controller does support AHCI mode, which enables hot plugging (same as with the raid southbridges ICH6R - ICH8R which support hot plugging with raid drivers from Intel without Intel assuring this).
But it does not support AHCI if the PATA port is used as in the Mac Pro. And without AHCI there is no way to do hot plugging.
Using a SATA DVD drive may not mean AHCI is used automatically. The controller has to be switched from IDE to AHCI mode. Maybe the Mac Pro does it on startup or some EFI specialist can finds out how to do that.
BTW Tiger can handle an ICH8R in AHCI mode on all SATA ports without a problem.
    Kind regards,

Info/Tips on using Spare SATA Ports with Windows: (from Jan 15th, 2008 news page) This may have come up in the past and I'd forgotten it (don't own a Mac Pro yet) but in reply to a post yesterday (1/15/2008) on the Pioneer SATA Blu-Ray reader/Superdrive combo drive, a reader mentioned the spare SATA ports are not usable in Windows XP at least with the standard drivers with Bootcamp. (Most readers have used the ports in OS X although I've not searched drive db reports for anyone that mentioned using Bootcamp/Windows also. BTW - The spare ports are bootable for OS X use, as noted in this article - although drives are not shown/usable when booted from Windows with standard drivers.)
(Update) Here's a reader mail w/tips on using the spare ports with Windows via a replacement chipset driver install and grub bootloader edit:
" after finding this thread in the onmac forums I finally was able to get my pioneer sata drive to work under bootcamp. Basically you have to do the following:
    - Install Win XP and ubuntu linux with a pata dvd drive in XP, change the ide 2680 driver to the intel ahci driver found here (downloadcenter.intel.com) S5000 Based Server AHCI SATA Storage Driver for Windows.
    - Boot into ubuntu and change the stage1 file of the grub bootloader to this:
    http://www.olofsson.info/grub/stage1
This keeps the mac pro in ahci mode when booting a foreign OS
Now you can boot windows using the linux partition, this will start grub and keep the mac pro in the correct mode
I also installed Refit to make things a little easier but as far as i know using Alt key when booting should work too.
if anyone tries this and has any questions feel free to ask
    -Forrest"

  • P45: SATA port numbers

    Hi,
in the P45 Zilent manual (http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=downloadfile&dno=6946&type=manual), on page 2-13 (27 in PDF), there is a visualisation of SATA ports integrated on the motherboard. Unfortunatelly, it is not very clear to me the distribution of port numbers to the connectors. Would you write me a table, corresponding to the picture on page 2-13, which clearly states, which number goes to which "cell"?
Background: I am troubleshooting errors associated with a specific port number and I need to find the associated physical port on the board. If I would have presume, that the left number corresponds to the left column on the picture, I am confused, because I am getting an error on the port 1, but I have no cable in the top left port.
    Thank you,
    Martin

I see. Can you list out your full system specs and PSU specs amps? For a start, you can try to use another SATA cable to see if it helps.
What is PSU? For change a cable, I would need to locate the problematic port / device first... that's why I have posted my original question.
/ As far as I remember, I have tried changing some cables and reconnect devices to another ports in the past. However, I do not remember more details. /

  • K8N Neo4-F purple Sata ports not SATA2

OK, here's my question posted on MSI support webpage with their answer. This will clarify and shed light on the discussion about orange SATA ports being SATA1 and purple being SATA2.
    Problem Description:
"My Mobo came with 4 purple Sata ports. Does that mean that it is Sata II? I ask because it is a Neo4-F mobo, supposedly not an Ultra chipset?

So, friends, according to MSI, this means that having purple SATA ports on your Mobo doesn't really mean they are SATA2.
It's good though that they replied on the same day, isn't it?

According to the product page http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=proddesc&prod_no=249&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=171
    On-Board SATA
    • nForce4 chipset supports 4 SATA ports. (Orange SATA Connector)
    - Transfer rate is up to 150MB/s.
    • nForce4 Ultra chipset supports 4 SATA II ports. (Purple SATA II Connector)
    - Transfer rate is up to 300MB/s.
I have two of these boards, but I'm using a SATA II drive on only one of them. How could I tell if it's running at SATA II spec? Something listed at POST or in the OS? The PC isn't currently hooked up, otherwise I would look at it now.

1st ensure that the HDD(s) used are SATAII generation, and they are not limited to work at SATA1 mode.
from OS, navigate to SATA drivers and check active operation mode(SATA1 or SATA2)

  • Z87 GD-65 7 Sata ports dead after bios flash

Greetings, I have a Z87 GD-65 Mobo. I updated the BIOS to version 1.6 from 1.1 via forum flash tool. After the BIOS update, I restarted the computer. While the computer is restarting, I noticed it stopped loading the before the BIOS was loaded. So I checked the debug LED and it stopped on A2 with a black screen. It took me awhile to figure this out but I removed all of the HDD and their sata cables (I have 4 HDD). One by one, I tried connecting the HDD with the OS to each of SATA port on the mobo. I found one that is working, and was able to start my computer (which is sata port #1 and the rest are dead) and get into windows. Question is: How do I get the sata ports to work again?.
    System:
    OS: Windows 8.1 PRO
    MSI Z87 GD-65 With i7 4770k no overclock.
    Memory: 8GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHZ
    GPU: MSI GTX 780 Lighting.
    Power supply: Corsair TX850M
    Cooler: Corsair H80i

Yes i cleared the cmos by removing the battery and pressing the switch on the mobo and left it for 1 hour. The files i used are the ones from here http://us.msi.com/product/mb/Z87-GD65-GAMING.html#overview and the usb flash tool.

  • NEO Platinum (754 nForce3) SATA RAID Question

Because my ASUS Mainboard died yesterday, i am planing to buy the NEO Platinum for 754 socket. As i can see in manual, there is option in BIOS to disable or enable RAID function for each SATA port. There are 2x2 separate SATA ports, but only one SATA Controller.
I have 3 SATA Harddisk - 2 are in RAID0 Stripeset, and one drive as normal, standalone drive. My question:
Is it posible to connect the 2 RAID0 drives on SATA ports 3 and 4 and use them as RAID0 Stripeset, but at the same time to connect the 3rd standalone drive on port 1 or 2 in normal mode, also NO RAID use?
Theoraticaly, ase in manual - it should be posible (because you can switch the RAID function on or off for each SATA port, but on the other side - phisicaly - its only ONE SATA controller on board.
I need fast reply, so i can order the board in webshop. Thanx.

Thanx people, but now i habe another question. On my ASUS board i have connected 2 RAID drives on Silicon Image RAID controller - but the NEO Platinum have nVidia RAID controller.
Can i migrate with the RAID drives to another RAID controller without loose of data? I mean, i know that i must install again WinXP, thats no problem - the thing is, i want to keep my data on other partitions untouched. So, i have to boot to nVidia RAID options - to set a new Stripeset, but can i also mark the set as "healthy" and use it normaly (offcourse with fresh XP install on C:)?
