K6 FISR & Single SATA

Hi Guys, I have been reading all the forums so I can set up my new (first) system build correctly. It is the old chestnut of the single sata drive on the FISR MoBo. The only thread I have read that this will work is from 'Technojunkie'. As I hope to get my system started tomorrow after building this week I would be gratefull to know if Technojukie's install system has worked for others. I would just love my new system to work from the off, and stay working!

  • KT4 Ultra FISR Single SATA drive only

I have the KT4 Ultra FISR and just purchased a Seagate 160GB SATA drive.
Can I use this as my only drive?
Do I simply need to set the SATA as my first boot device?

Sadly you will need the sata drivers. You should have your drivers floppy close when you start your windows setup, and when it tells you Press F2 to install third party controllers.. you must press it.
      Some steps before:
First connect your SATA drive. Go into bios at Integrated Peripherals/OnBoard PCI Controller and enable Serial ATA Controller. After reboot you should see the FastTrack Bios - press Control-F and get into FastBuild Configuration Utility. Then chose Define Array, chose 16k stripe, save settings. Now use some software like Partition Magic to partitionate the SATA HDD. the rest will be done by the windows setup.
About your other question, is safe to keep the old HDD, some say better to use it on the IDE2 connector on the mobo and to disable from bios IDE1. I tryed and I didn't notice any diference.

  • Single SATA on KT 4 Ultra

Sorry for the dumb ass question but is it posssible to use a single sata drive on the Kt 4 ultra fisr as a master boot drive, reason being is that my IBM is dying and a friend has a SATA disk for sale .Thanks in advance

your mobo just like my. this mobo SATA RAID only, I try one SATA Hard disk. but It wont take it, will take add SATA disk.
These type of RAID configurations are allowed:
    a). 2 SATA channel HDD (RAID0 & RAID1)
    ~or~
    b). 1 SATA + 1ATA parallel HDD but performance will be slower (RAID0 & RAID1)
    ~or~
c). 2 SATA + 1ATA parallel HDD but performance will be slower (RAID0 only)
2 ATA Parallel HDDs RAID is NOT possible
    4. KT4 Ultra IDE3 usage
KT4 Ultra's IDE3 can only support ONE Master ATA HDD. This is due to the limitation of the Promise PDC20376 controller itself, has nothing to do with the BIOS.

  • How to install Windows XP on a single SATA drive?

I am trying without much success to use a single Maxtor 200 GB SATA drive in a non-RAID configuration running Windows XP Home SP 2+. I obtained documentation from the MSI Download site that explains how to do such a thing. However ...
First, out of the box the Drivers & Utilities CD is useless -- can't read it, simply hangs the CD drive.
Second, the drivers from the Download site (IATA_ICH5R) return "incompatible hardware. software not supported on this chipset" messages.
So where do I get the drivers required to install Windows XP on a single SATA drive (to use at point F6 in the Windows XP installation)?
    Regards,
    Bob (ll1951md)
    P.S. Configuration ...
    865PE/G Neo2-P (MS-6728) w/ Intel Extreme Graphics 2, Realtek ALC655 Audio
2 GB Corsair Dual Channel DDR Memory
    Intel P4 3.0e GHz Processor
1 Maxtor 200 GB SATA HD
1 HDS 120 GB ATA HD

Thanks for the tips. I was able to install Windows XP and boot from the SATA drive by using these options and setting the appropriate boot device selections...
    Legacy Mode
    ATA Configuration - PATA only
    SATA Keep enabled - yes
    PATA Keep enabled - yes
    PATA channel selection - both
    Combined Mode Option - S-ATA 1st Channel
    S-ATA Ports Definition - P0 - 3rd./P1 - 4th.
I just wasn't sure if I was really getting "SATA" performance, etc. without specific drivers.
    Thanks again.

  • [Athlon64] CAN'T SEE SINGLE SATA DRIVE / K8T NEO no Promise controller

I have a K8t NEO -the cheapskate version with no PROMISE SATA controller or on-board Firewire
I have been running on XP SP2 on 2 IDE drives, everything is ok.  I added a SINGLE SATA drive and turned the VIA SATA controller on in BIOS. I did the MSI Live Update and have the latest VIA SATA driver, latest chipset, latest BIOS, latest EVERYTHING. At boot, the VIA SATA controller reports my Hitachi SATA as Channel 0  Primary"  in the SATA devices table.  Going into the SATA RAID menu it tells me "You can't make RAID with just one drive"  which is true, of course.  But the point is the controller SEES the drive.
I've run MSI Live Update and have the latest BIOS, latest SATA XP driver, latest EVERYTHING.
Windows XP doesn't see the SATA drive.
In XP  I see a VIA RAID CONTROLLER in Hardware / Device Manager  which is DISABLED.   When I right-click then click ENABLE on the VIA RAID CONTROLLER  the machine reboots immediately.  I tried safe mode, same thing.  I tried BIOS settings of "No PNP O/S Installed"  and "Yes PNP O/S Installed"  and reset the NVRAM.  No change.
I think there must be an IRQ conflict....  I have a sound card (on-board sound is turned OFF in BIOS) and AGP video card, and that's it- no WiFi NIC or anything else to eat up IRQ resources. I use the Realtek on-board ethernet.
I tried my Windows 98 partition and that booted, detected the new hardware (VIA SATA) and I installed the driver from the MSI CD  and Win 98 is happy with the SATA drive..... it sees the drive just fine.
How do I make Windows XP see the SATA drive?

Have you tried starting XP with CD and entering recovery, log on as admin and see if SATA drive is there? Remember to "F6" with a floppy drive of SATA drivers for
-XP-... I'm assuming you already have as you said all is uptodate.  When the boot BIOS for the VIA SATA apprears and you press "TAB" I believe it is, you can mess with the SATA functions. Sorry if does not apply to your compy or you've already done all this.... BTW you CAN run a RAID array with one HDD, at least thats what I did on my Promise controller.
In my Device Manager under Disk drives it looks like this (notes bracketed are noting position):
Promise 1+0 Stripe/RAID0 SCSI Disk Device (Bus Number 0, Target ID 1, LUN 0 (G:\ 1-160GB IDE Seagate/notice ONE drive)
    Promise 2+0 Stripe/RAID0 SCSI Disk Device (Bus Number 0, Target ID 0, LUN 0) (F:\ 2x200 SATA)
    ST3160023A (Location 1 (1) VIA IDE D:\)
VIA SATA RAID 0 SCSI Disk Device (Bus Number 0, Target ID 0, LUN 0) (E:\ 2x120 SATA)
    WDC WD800JB-00CRA1 (Location 0 (0) VIA IDE C:\)
Under the boards BIOS, is the SATA drive listed under the BOOT table??? In my system it lists the above 5 partitions (7 HDD's total), floppy, 2 CD/DVD drives, etc...
Oh also in Device Manager IS the VIA SATA controller appearing in the "SCSI and RAID controllers" tab??? I have set mine to just SATA before and of course now it says "VIA SATA RAID Controller"... for you it should read "VIA SATA Controller". Remember there are 2 different drivers for the SATA controller, one for SATA and one for SATA RAID. Look on your floppy disk or if you saved out the updated driver. I made a new floppy with the latest XP drivers. When booting from WINXP CD, and promted for "F6" and press it, later it will show you TWO different drivers after reading the floppy disk for XP. You obviously want the non RAID driver... hope that helps somewhat... g'luck

  • 875P can not see a single SATA HD - works only as RAID

    My mobo is the 875P Neo-FIS2R (601-6758-040) & OS is XP sp2.
For many years the on board Promise controller supported well the RAID array(0 or 1), using a pair of Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 200GB (Model ST3200826AS).
Now, time passed and  I want to increase the size of my HDs.
Instead of the 2 x 200Gb, I bought recently one similar Seagate Barracuda of 1000Gb.
But the mobo refused to "see" the new single SATA HD when is connected on promise's SATA ends!
There is not single SATA connection either with one of the old 200GB Seagate; worked only together as RAID!
I checked the hard disks on an other PC and worked perfect. I have tried the BIOS combinations without result
Dear PC gurus, advise please ...
    George

Hay man, im just thinking, maybe those HDD are to big for the BIOS to detect them. what i'd recommend, is flashing your BIOS to the latest.
    http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=544
look at the top bios flash fixes.
if you have never flashed a bios before i'd get some advise from the bios side of the forums. also that my not be the fault. maybe its just a limition of the MB.

  • 875pneo Promise..Single Sata Drive?

Can I attach a single Sata drive on either ser3 or ser 4 on the Promise controller?
Or does it always have to be 2 drives in raid config...
My main os is setup on RAID0 on the INtel ICH controller above on the mobo.
I change the promise to SATA only in Bios.
    Not coming up in Windows...
I just overcame a nightmare of having one HD fail as RAID0 on the promise and moved the structure with clean OS install on the ICH controller.
I just now want my sata 500 singe drive to connect.
When I had the RAID0 OS on the Promise, I was able to have the single SATA drive on SER2.
that was then this is now.

AND I already have data on my ESATA drive so I do not want to "reformat" it here as stated.
I can't even see it in disk management.
Q: I've installed a new SATA HDD, I can find it in Device Manager but it doesn't appear in Windows Explorer at all! HELP!!
You need to format the HDD, not just SATA but also PATA HDD then only Windows Explorer can see it and assign it with a drive letter. To format a HDD, right click on My Computer, select Manage, look for Disk Management. You should see a no-drive-letter unformatted drive there in the list. Get it formatted by right click on it and choose the obvious option there is.

  • Running on SINGLE SATA Drive

I just have one question, is it possible to operate off of a single SATA drive on any of the K8T Neo mobo's?

you know, I have the exact same thing.  I have a Samsung SATA HDD connected to SATA1 (I am not o'cing), and the green arrow shows up.  When I try to go into properties (right-click), It does not give me the option of "hiding" it.  Odd indeed.
And to the original post question, yes, no problems running single SATA as detailed here in the responses.

  • K8N Neo2 939 How do you use a single SATA?

    Hi all,
First post. I've just recieved my new board (see above) to replace the gigabyte I'm running at the moment. Looking at the manual it seems all the SATA ports are nvidia ones, does this mean I can't run a single SATA drive? I've heard it's RAID only with the Nvidia ports. On the gigabyte I loaded sillion image drivers and set the SATA function to BASE and ran it from the SI SATA port.
    Can any one help?
    Many Thanks
    Roch

    See thread.
Should be the same as the socket 754 as it uses the same chipset.
Some have found it better not to install drivers, but others find it faster across the whole range with the drivers.
Think I would go the driver method.

  • Cannot load windows 2000 (sp3) on pm8m2-v with single sata drive

I'm using a single WD 80GB SATA Drive (wd800jd) on the pm8m2-v mainboard's via sata controller.  I've gone through the hit F6 and selected the windows 2000 ata/atapi driver and the raid driver (both separately) and the OS install always says it finds no hard drive.  Then I tired both ata/atapi and raid driver for windows xp (even though i'm attempting a windows 2000 install) and it actually finds the drive, but after formatting and copying files, i get an inaccessible boot device failure when it reboots to begin setup.  i've downloaded most recent mobo drivers and bios (the bios on the web is actually older than the one on the board? - web has v1.1 and the board has v2.0)   ideas???

got it workin with the most recent xp driver from the site... strange

  • Question about single sata faq

when i do the whole raid setup
    do i loss my partitions?
been having problems with installing xp on sata (see my other thread)
so i though i would give this a try
but i dont want to loss my 2 other partitions
    cheers

It's unclear to me if you already have a RAID array (at least 2 drives) or just a single drive.   If you have these partitions, you want to save, on a SATA drive that was not originally part of a RAID array when these partitions were created.  Then creating a RAID array will delete those partitions.  If the drive was part of an array then it has to stay with the other drives or these partitions will be lost.

  • KT6D-LSR and Single SATA Drive

I am hoping to install a single Maxtor 120gig SATA drive on my KT6d-LSR as well a use my existing IDE drive.  I have been reading the posts on this subject and there seems to be no consensus as to whether this will work or not.  Could someone please respond and let me know if this worked for you and how you went about doing it. Thanks

I ordered 1 Maxtor 120 gig SATA drive the other day.  I successfully installed Win XP and everything seems to be working perfectly.  Ok, here are the steps I followed:
    1) Plugged the drive into SATA-1 header on the Via 8237 controller.
    2) In the BIOS, I enabled the VT8237 Controller.
    3) Set the boot device to BBS-0 in the Boot Sequence menu of the Bios
    4) Hit F6 in the WinXP install to load the Via Drivers from the supplied disk.
    5) Once the install completed, I installed the newest RAID drivers from the VIA Website.
It seems to be working fine now.  I needed to update to the newest RAID drivers to stop infrequent BSOD.  Once this was done, I have not run into any troubles.  I am going to try and disable the RAID controller in the BIOS and see if it is still recognized as the boot drive.  I will post back once I have spent a significant amount of time running the machine.
    here are my specs:
    AMD 2500+ 333Mhz 512Kb L2
    MSI KT6 Delta LSR
    512MB of DDR PC-2700
    120 Gig Maxtor SATA HD

  • K7N2 Delta2-LSR Single SATA hard drive set up

OK, I've set up system described in signature, and followed advice posted in this forum.
Enabled RAID, set up single drive raid array, did the F6 thing and installed windows without any problem.
I intended to disable raid in BIOS but when I do the system does not find a hard drive to boot from.
The only two hard drive boot priority options are array (when enabled) and add-on cards (none)
At some stage during the set up I did see my sata h/d in BIOS as well as the raid array.  It may have been on IDE Channel3 Master but not there now.
I'm now thinking of deleting my array using RAID BIOS-F10 but I am concerned not having much experience of raid.
In particular, will BIOS see my hard drive as it only sees an array now.
    Is my only option?
I'd hate to re-install windows and my applications again.  If it come to that, I could live with current situation.
    Thanks Dave

just noticed, your sig lists "K7N2 Delta2-LSR" while your topic title lists "K7N2 Delta-LSR". there is a fundametal difference, hence the confusion
the old Delta's had the Promise controller for SATA / RAID, as nvidia chipset at time had no native support. now newer nvidia nforce chipsets do. what i described above is correct for Delta, but what you have discovered is correct for Delta2: for single drive, disable IDE RAID, and SATA drive is listed as an IDE device

  • Single sata drive detection problem

Ok here is my problem that I am pulling my hair out over.
I purchased k7n2 delta ilsr and a sata 10000 WD raptor drive yesterday.
I am trying to install the single drive in my system and the os will not detect the drive.
This is the steps I have been taking to no avail.
    1.  On  boot up pressing ctrl f  to set up a stripe raid array (required even if there is only one drive)
    2. reboot and boot to western digital data lifeguard tools and format the drive.  (This program sees the drive just fine and says its functional.)
    3.  Reboot and set the bois to boot to os cd, reboot and run the w2000 cd and hit F6 when prompted.  Then it prompts me to install the promise 376/378 fastrack drivers which I do and it installs them.  then it leads me to the prompt to install the os and it says setup did not find any hard disk drives installed.
I have tried many variations of this to no avail, what am I missing?

I romoved the jumper in the jumper block with no change, the floppy drive installs the promise drivers fine, I d/l the larger file folders  for the promise drivers with no change.
the drive is attached to sata1, I moved it to sata 2 with no change.
The only thing I can think of is a bios setting I am missing, I cannot see the drive in the bios only when I boot to the wd utility.
My other thought is according to the mobo manual it says to fdisk and format rather than using the data lifeguard utility I am using to format.  I do not have the files to boot to dos, fdisk and format the drive.  I made a msdos boot disk in xp and transfered format and fdisk to the floppy but the command in dos does not work.  format ???? to where there is no drive designation.
