K7D Master very slow PCI/Raid

I have a K7D Master with latest firmware. I am trying to setup a Adaptec 2410SA raid controller (3 Raptor 10k drives) and am finding it very slow. It benchmarks with a RAID 0 array at 30MB/s. I have also tried Highpoint 1640 with the same results. I have tried a second K7D master board and it shows the same results.
From what I can tell it seems to be the PCI bus is slow. I have tried both 33 and 66MHz cards but always can get no more then about 30MB/s out of my Raid controller.  If I use the inbulit IDE I can get over 40MB/s with a single drive.
I have tried adjusting the PCI latency but made not difference. Does anyone have any ideas?

Radeon 9600
512 ECC Ram
Adaptec 2410SA / Highpoint 1640
3 Raptor 10k drives
500W power

I am using anAdaptec 29160N with 3 scsi drives and this works like a charm. It is just the Adaptec 2100S which doesn't work, and the problem is related to the AGP port. I tried to remove my AGP card and installed a PCI video card - then suddenly the 2100S worked. It was assigned an IRQ and I could also get inside the bios/menu of the card.
I therefore decided to test different AGP cards - I tried Creative Banshee (3DFX chip), Creative GeForce 2 Ultra, Leadtek GeForce 3 Ti 500 and 3DFX Voodoo 3. The Adaptec card would not boot no matter what AGP card I tried. The machine hangs when the bios of the Adaptec is showing. I then tried 3 different PCI video cards (Geforce 2MX, ATI Rage3D and Matrox), and the 2100S worked with all of them.
So it seems that the Adaptec 2100S will not boot (hangs during bios message) as long as the AGP port is being used on the k7D - the question is: can MSI come up with a new bios that resolves this problem or do I have to live without my 2100S ?

  • K7D Master and Adaptec 2100S RAID not working

I have the K7D Master with 2 AMD 1900+ MP cpu's and 1 GB RAM. I can not get the Adaptec 2100S RAID SCSI card to work with this mainboard. I have taken out all of my PCI cards, and I have tried to place the 2100S in all of the PCI ports, but the card will not work. It seems that the bios of the K7D do not like the bios of the Adaptec card. The Adaptec works fine with the K7NPro motherboard, so it is nothing wrong with the card. I have just bought 2 x 15.000 rpm scsi disks, and I was really looking forward in having SCSI RAID with this excellent motherboard.
Does anybody have the same problem, or does anyone have a solution - it will be highly appreciated.

  • RAID Adaptec 2410SA slow on K7D Master

    Hello
I have a raid controller Adaptec 2410SA connected to the 64bit pci slot.
Setting up a raid 0 array won't let me have a transfer rate over than 40 Mb / s (even with 4 wd raptors I borrowed)
SiSoft Sandra shows that all pci slots are running at 1 x pciclk (33 MHz ?)
How can I set the 64bit pci to be clocked at 66 MHz ?
    Thanks for your help

I'm running the 2410SA on a K7D Master-L also.  SiSoft Sandra is not recognizing the 66mhz bus for me either.  The 3DMark03 system analyzer also does not report the 66mhz bus, and it shows my AGP slot as empty and my AGP GeForce card on a PCI slot????  I think there is an error on how the motherboard reports info out to these benchmark utilities.  I run 4 Hitachi SATA 80GB drives in RAID 10 and pull consistent 100-105MB read speeds on sequential, buffered, and random.  With the RAID card in slot 2 it shared the IRQ with the video card and would only allow 95-100MB transfer rate, so the unique IRQ is worth about 10MB/S.  Almost not worth the additional heat it causes by having the RAID card so close to the video card.

  • K7D master, Scsi raid cards, bios flashes and confusion

    K7d master-l
    Ram, crucial reg+ecc
    psu more than enough, zippy/emacs
2*amd 2500+ pin moded to 2000mhz (will do 2.2ghz very stable, your pick fold for 2 mouths between reboots or prime? Longest prime run I allowed was 72 hours both CPUs.)
To cut to the chase when I install a fully functional Hp netraid-4m in an available 66/64 slot or any other for that matter the computer hangs at point "initializing hard drive controller".
The card caries on doing its self-test and then nothing. No beep no message just a blinking cursor -->  _  *<--blink*
First thing I tried was sans 3ware raid card but same problem.
The next thing I tried was graphics card and NetRaid only in multiple slots, same problem.
Thought "...well maybe a BIOS could solve the problem?"    I have done a few flashes before but not on this.
Downloaded two separate BIOS from main site and they both stop responding just after I agree to it reprogramming the bios chip.
Nothing is done when it hangs here. The computer is bootable. First time it hung I waited an hour each subsequent time 10 minutes.
Interestingly my bios does not appear to be in this list.-->   http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=73&kind=3
    The date on my bios is 13/12/2002 (that’s dd/mm/yyyy) and is v6.00 ?? ???
I couldn’t find any option in the bios for write protect.
If I try: "4. Input "awfl823d w6501kms.xxx /sn/py/cc/cp/f", then press ENTER" nothing happens, computer crashes, ctrl+alt+del don’t reboot it, caps doest toggle.
Flashing done from a bootable dos cd and the bios and flash utill are stored on a fat16 hard drive partition. And have tried 5 times.
Any help with these two rather odd problems would really be appreciated.
    Thanks
edit: my graphics card takes up 2 slots its a x800xtpe with a silencer. 256mb.

thanks for the reply. I am not convinced by flashing in windows though so i used good old dos on the made for the purpose boot cd. I keep a fat16 partition for things like this too.
    my steps were as follows
    1 pull plug
    2 clear cmos
3 plug in. "what why did u turn your self on?"
    4 insert dos cd
    5 flash "its working!"
    6 reboot
    7 panic "whys nothing happening?"
8 unplug, clear cmos etc "ITS ALIVE {insert manic laugh}"
now iv seen windows works ill shut down and test the card
I have used 191 I don’t know where you found that bios from its not on an msi server ether?  sorry to say i don’t trust much :(
what benefits/bug fixes does it have?
Edit: Well the card is now detected it reports 6 disks attached each with a unique id and then it stops responding, wont let me into config. I’m figuring one disk could be at fault but my original problems are all resolved thanks to a bios update.
little hard but nice you have finaly able to update it.
"what benefits/bug fixes does it have?"
    Changes from 1.91(old) to 1.90(newest):
Added support for Athlon MP 2800+
Fix somethink about Vcore problem but cant translate it (Behebt Probleme mit der CPU Kernspannung (VCore).)
"I have used 191 I don’t know where you found that bios from its not on an msi server ether?  sorry to say i don’t trust much :( "
dont worry we are never give/suggest you somethink that gona do damage/unsure its work correctly or somethink like that, especially when we are talking about BIOS updates. im thinking always from other side(etc in this case from your side what will be best for you) BIOS is tested and proved himself in time, thats why i recommend him. MSI Global servers are not always up to date.
Here you can look from MSI official also but not global:
    http://www.msicomputer.cz/soubor.php?produkt=MS-6501+(K7D+Master-L)&typ=%25
    http://www.msi-computer.de/produkte/main_idx_view.php?Prod_id=191&Seite=BIOS
There is also newest beta version (2.01 which added support for Sempron CPUs) exist at German MSI, but i didnt recommend couse didnt tested and lag of info about it, you can test it also at own risk. Probably will work good also but personally cant gurantee for issues or anythink about it.(but that is my guess only and i dont work with gueses.)

    you are welcome mate

  • Oracle 10gr2 Master/detail form running very slow when you navigate to the detail record.

Hi All, I have a master detail  form, running in webserver, when I navigate to the detail block, the form start buffering and buttering for about 2 min. There is a trigger when-new-record instance that is firing when you navigate to  a new record : The select part of this stament is taken a long time to execute. I modified this in toad and what used to take 25 seconds to run is taken less than a second now, but the slowness still persists in the form.
    for rec in (select wrrh_col
                      wpbh_col_lvd,
                       wpbh_col_doc_no
          from wh_col,
               wkpl_col,
               wh_col
         where wrrh_col_no = :block.wreh_wrrh_col_no
           and wrrh_col_no = wreh_wrrh_col_no
             and wrrh_col_no = wpbh_col_no
           and wrrh_col_proj    = wpbh_col_proj
           and wrrh_proj_no     = wpbh_proj_no) loop
       if fun_name(rec.wpbh_col_lvd) = 'Y' then
        do something,
       end if;
      end loop;
The select staement that used to run for 23 seconds is running in less than one second, but the form is still running very slow when I navigate to the detail record.
    Please advise.
    Thanks.

Thanks Andrea for your prompt response, the problem is the select statement and like I stated, I tuned the select statement in toad and what normally takes 23 secs is taking less than 1 sec to run. If I comment out the call to the function, it is still slow. The select stament will returned null and it will still be slow. When I comment out the for loop, it run very fast. I dont know what else to do than tuned the select statement.

  • Master is very Slow, Because Slave Takes 20 minutes for "startup done"

I have two db env to be backup for each other. I stopped one db env for 5 minutes, then restarted it. I found that it took over 20 minutes to receive the db callback event "startup done". During these time, there were transactions in the master db env. I guess this makes the sync_up process take so long time.
I used the ack policy "DB_REPMGR_ACKS_ONE_PEER" and used "txn no sync" flag for transaction, so during these 25 minutes, master is very slow.
My requirement is master can resume its performance as soon as slave comes back. Can slave accept the log before its sync completed? Or any other way to solve this issue?

Most likely what happened is that the stopped dbenv is the only site/peer able to
send the acknowledgement. If it is stopped but not disconnected, then the master
will wait the full ACK timeout for every txn.
It is also likely that during that 5 minutes, log files were archived and when the
stopped dbenv became active again, it had to perform an internal initialization
from scratch. That copies over every page of every database and then the logs
needed to resynchronize. If you have a lot and/or very large database files,
that can take a long time.
The client cannot send any acks until it completes its synchronization. One
way to avoid this would be to perform a manual hot backup to the client before
starting up the application. You would have to copy over all database files, then
all log files from the master (in that order) and then run catastrophic recovery
in that client directory. Then start up your application and the client should be
    able to quickly synchronize.
You can control this in the application by setting DB_REP_CONF_NOAUTOINIT
to DB_ENV->rep_set_config. You'll get back an error that tells you that the site
needs an re-initialization and you can do that copying then.

I own an Imac G5.  It is running very slow.  Did hardware test and got an error code 2STF/8/3:S-ATABUSO-Master.  What is my next step?
Also how do i run disk first aid on the computer off of the install disks?  Which disk do i do it from.  Thanks in advance. Stuart

Sounds like your hard drive it about to die.
    I would backup ASAP.
To run First Aid on your disk, you need to boot from the install DVD for your Mac.
After selecting the language, open Disk Utiltity and repair the disk.
If it reports errors that DU is unable to repair, report them here and we will provide additional help.

  • Raid 0 very slow performance

I'm having trouble with my new raid 0 set up. I used 2 1T HDDs. When I tested the speed of the new drive compared to my Mac HD drive the new 2T raid drive is very slow. I'm very new to this raid setup. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also I have never had to ask a question in the forums so I pretty sure I left out alot of info.
    Mac Pro
    12 core
    8 gigs ram
    Lion OS

Are the two drives same make/model? Mixing different makes, or models, doesn't spell success. WD Black Caviar with 64MB cache, latest revision, is good solid and capable of 105MB/s
    Are they green?
Why anyone is using Lion; and also, if you are using raid and have no background, figure just for testing and you may need to rebuild or recreate. I would not use Apple RAID in Lion yet.

How are you using the array? how did you test it?
If you want a faster boot drive and system, maybe an SSD.
Keep the boot drive free of everything else.
Use larger drives. WD Black 1.5TB is $109 while 2TB is $140.

  • K7D Master L & Promise FastTrak SX4000 boot hang

I am having major trouble getting a Promise FastTrak SX4000 RAID controller to work with a K7D Master-L (MSI-6501-030). I would appreciate any and all input, especially from those of you who have similar or identical hardware (same motherboard/chipset, same RAID controller or similar Promise card) and are able to get them working.
    Brief description :
The SX4000 controller will hang at the IDE drive detection stage when installed on this board alone (plus an AGP video card) or alongside various combinations of PCI adapters, in various PCI slots available, and using various BIOS settings. The SX4000 appears to work fine in another Intel chipset system with the same AGP video cards. Both the motherboard and the SX4000 controller appear to have the latest BIOSes available.
    Symptoms :
When the system is turned on with the SX4000 controller installed, it completes POST successfully, then loads the Promise FastTrak BIOS from the SX4000, and stalls after displaying "Scanning for IDE drives". Waiting for extended periods of time verifies the system is just 'stuck' here. It appears to be a 'hang' rather than a 'freeze', since the keyboard continues to operate and Ctrl-Alt-Del will still reboot the system at this point. The D-LED diagnostic LED bracket indicates (according to the included user manual), the system is at the "Initializing Hard Drive Controller" stage at this point.
The system continues to boot fine if the SX4000 controller is not installed.
The SX4000 controller functions fine on another system, a Dell OptiPlex GX400--a Pentium 4-based system built around the Intel i850 chipset. This OptiPlex GX400 has only a TNT RIVA 128 AGP video card installed, but has built-in audio and NIC. The SX4000 controller also works in this system using a GeForce2 MX TwinView AGP video card as well as a GeForce FX5600 AGP video card. It does not work on the K7D Master-L with either card, with the following exception. With only the TNT RIVA 128 AGP video card, it will in fact scan for IDE drives (indicated by ~10 - 15 dots/periods, ".", displayed after the "Scanning for IDE drives" message), but then will also hang as soon as the scan is complete without additional messages.
All of the above is true whether hard disks are connected to the SX4000 controller or not.
Disclaimer : I am not a newbie. I've built hundreds of systems over the past 10 years and know what I am talking about. :)
What I have tried so far, and what I've been able to determine :
I have gone through quite a bit of research about this. I've tried both Promise and MSI Web sites (both US and Taiwan), the Web at large through Google, as well as various newsgroups including alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.msi-microstar through Google, the MSI forums on their Web site, the AMDMB Forums, 2CPU forums, HardForum, AnandTech Forums, SysOpt forums, and Tom's Hardware Community. While there are many posts about the AMD 760MPX chipsets and various Promise RAID and non-RAID IDE controller cards, none describes my problem exactly. Hence my posting here.
o There isn't a problem with the DIMM I am using on the SX4000. It's a 256 MB PC133 DIMM, with 8 HT33S328256K (32Mx8) DRAM chips on it. I am certain it's not a problem because the card works as expected in the Dell OptiPlex GX400 with the same DIMM. I have also tried a 64 MB PC100 DIMM (Crucial) and there is no difference--the SX4000 controller hangs the K7D Master-L, but works with the OptiPlex GX400.
o Moving the card around to different PCI slots on the K7D Master-L doesn't make a difference, if only so to avoid a problem with a shared interrupt. I have tried the board in all 5 available PCI slots--the upper two 66MHz/64-bit PCI slots as well as the lower three 33MHz/32-bit PCI slots. I have looked at the IRQ assignment scheme for this board, and tried putting the SX4000 (alone or with other PCI cards--see configuration info at the end) in the first PCI slot, next to the AGP slot such that it doesn't share an IRQ with the video card. No luck. I have also tried the lowest PCI slot (#5), which should have a distinct IRQ ideally, based on the above scheme, but that also makes no difference.
o Disabling various components, including all on-board peripherals (audio, LAN, serial, parallel, and USB ports, legacy USB emulation, ACPI), disabling all caching/shadowing (video/system BIOS) makes no difference.
o The SX4000 controller came with the latest available BIOS according to the Promise Web site (http://www.promise.com/support/download/download2_eng.asp?productId=94&category=All&os=100), v1.02.0.5. Just for the hell of it, I copied the controller BIOS from the flash ROM to an image using Promise's own PFLASH.EXE utility and file-compared it with the latest BIOS on the Web site to ensure they are exactly the same.
o The K7D Master-L came with BIOS v1.6, which, according to MSI's US (search for the K7D Master L) or Taiwanese (lists a v1.82, but I am hesitant since it doesn't recommend or caution against using it on the -L model of the motherboard) Web sites is not available. These list either v1.3 or v1.5 (the latter for the K7D Master) as the latest available that I can verify for K7D Master-L.
o I tried downgrading the SX4000 controller BIOS to the other, earlier one available on the Promise Web site, to v1.01.0.15. No changes. The card still doesn't work in any slot on the K7D Master-L, and works fine in any slot on the OptiPlex GX400.
o There *are* people on these forums who have similar systems, some with the same motherboard and controller, others with the same motherboard and similar cards like the FastTrak SX6000 who apparently are able to make it work. I know this only because they have open threads on other issues and happen to provide their configuration info. For example:

What I have not done :
o I have not tried downgrading the BIOS on the K7D Master-L to an earlier (pre-1.6) version. I don't know if this is wise, though, considering this appears to be a newer (with working USB 1.x) revision of the motherboard that might minimally need the BIOS currently on it.
o I have not tried another SX4000 controller card, which I do not have. However, the card working fine on the OptiPlex GX400 indicates to me clearly that there isn't a functional problem per se on the card itself.
    o No components are overclocked.
    What I suspect :
o The fact that the two GeForce-based cards behave slightly differently than the TNT RIVA 128 (see above about how the hang occurs slightly later with the latter card) indicates to me that the problem is some combination of the motherboard, RAID controller, and video card conflicting (conspiring?) together. I am looking for the plainest AGP video card I have around to further test this.
o There appears to be a resource conflict *or* a BIOS/handover problem going on. It's not likely an IRQ conflict/sharing issue, since on the OptiPlex GX400, the SX4000 happily shares an IRQ with the video card (verified through the BIOS). The resources the SX4000 uses when on the OptiPlex GX400, as seen through its own BIOS/array utility are:
Installed Memory Address FF1F8000   Size 256M
    Controller IRQ9
    ATA IO Address EC00
XOR and HDMA IO Address E800
    Sequence Control IO Address E400
Flash and SRAM Memory Address FF200000
I do not know which of these are retained as is when in the K7D Master-L (the IRQ certainly isn't necessarily retained, but don't know about the rest). I also am not able to easily check for a conflict with these. I can verify that as Windows XP can see it (which does assign its own resources via ACPI, of course,) there are not system or motherboard resources overlapping with any of these.
Also note this older K7T issue that may be relevant
What I need help with :
If you have a K7D Master-L and an SX4000, SX6000, or other similar Promise controller, please let me know how your system is configured.
What other peripherals, particularly video card do you have?
Which slots are all the cards in, particularly the SX4000?
What BIOS version of the K7D Master-L are you using?
What BIOS version is the SX4000?
    Many thanks in advance,
    MacGyver

    this is my problem:
    1) the HD in master or slave the HD do not come recognized from the bios of the fastrack..HD not found..control cables ide or current
    2) cable select or removing jumper from the HD the these they come recognized, it allows to make the Array (tried raid 5, 0 and the 1) ago boot of the fastrack but at the moment of the boot from floppy or cd rom (as from bios of the mainboard) remains the underscore that flashes. • MSI K7D Master-L & 3ware 7506-4LP boot hang

I recently purchased a 3ware Escalade 7506-4LP RAID Controller (IDE, 4 ports - see product info here) for use with my MSI K7D Master-L (MSI-6501-030 - see product info here) to replace my Promise FastTrak100 TX4. On boot, the system POSTs fine, and then freezes solid at the point at which it should load the BIOS for the 3ware controller. I get nothing but a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the top left hand corner, and a hard reset (CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't work) is required to to reset the machine. The diagnostic LEDs on the motherboard indicate it's freezing at the point where it is "Initializing IDE controller".
    What I have tried:
    - Verified BIOS on RAID card was latest version (1.08.00.048)
    - Removed all PCI cards (except for RAID controller and video card)
    - Adding 33 MHz PCI cards to 64/66 PCI slot to slow down bus
    - Tried RAID controller in each PCI slot
    - Flashed the motherboard BIOS to 3 different versions, 1.91, 1.82, and 1.5 (which the motherboard was validated for use with this card on - see here)
    - Tried various BIOS settings (ACPI on/off, PCI Latency, etc)
    - Disabled all onboard devices (sound, ide, fdc, serial, parallel, etc.)
    - Detached all drives from card
    - Tested card in another computer to verify it works - it does.
I have noticed some people on this forum have had similar problems with SCSI or RAID cards:
http://forums.2cpu.com/showindex.php?threadid=39696 The first post in this thread describes the problem I'm having almost exactly.

    HELP

I'm quite new to this forums, and I'm not used to them yet. Usually, I have the habit to search first and use existing threads. I hope this isn't an issue...
Hello there! First of all, I need to tell you that I use windows XP without SP1 nor blaster patch as my favorite OS. To be able to play a game, I installed SP2 on a second Harddisk that I plug and unplug every time I want to play that game. Now that we know each other and you realize how crazy I am:
I'm wondering why I cannot have USB 2.0 support on my K7D Master L, with SP2. The board came with a NEC usb controller, and as far as I know it is supposed to be 2.0.
I don't have any drivers for it, but the ports are working at 1.1 perfectly. What should I do? I don't know what the problem is. I searched the bios looking for legacy support but found nothing... maybe is too old or something.
    Thanks a Lot.
No signature yet, so here is my setup description:
    - K7D Master L. Red PCB board with PCI USB card.
    - 2x athlons XP 2100+ modded to MP
    - 2x 512 MB DDR 266 REG. ECC.
    - XFX 7900 GS AGP 256 MB
    - 40 GB WD 7200 RPM HDD (for now)
    - 550W generic PFC psu.
Status: good stability. Reliable. Fast and powerful!

  • Very slow external sata HD (lion)

    Hi everybody!
It has been a while I am using a Netstor external HD (NR710C) 4x2TB WD Caviar black, RAID 10 (4TB total space, 2.71 Available, MacOS Extended Journaled).
It is conntected with the MacPro (MacPro 4,1 - early 2009) via a Sonnet Tempo SATA E2P pci card (drivers updated)
The OS installed is Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50d) on a OCZ SSD 250GB
What happen is that randomly the access  to the external RAID HD is very slow and while finder try to open subfolder the entire system freeze for a minute or so. Soemtimes the opened folders looks empty and I have to wait a minute or so to see the content.
When I used Snow Leopard (installed on a 1TB HD) the access was always fluid and fast.
What I've done to try to solve this issue is:
Unchecked the "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible) in the Energy Saver panel.
Changed slot of the PCI card
    Changed sata plug and cable
Performed all the check disk possible
It happens as well that the copy/move of big folder (up to 800GB) is not always as fas as it should be.
Also, working with Lightroom (cache is on the SSD hd) is really frustrating due the slow access to all the files.
I was used to work directly on the external sata HD but now seems like if I have to move everything back on an internal HD.
Is there any other check I can perform to address this issue?
    So many thanks.
    Luca

The case has an eSata port and cable.
I've run a speed test (Xbench) on a 2TB internal drive and the external RAID.

  • I have problems with my K7D MAster board

I just have gotten hands on a new K7D master mobo (yeah i know it is not the newest board on the market but i had the cpus so why not). I have just installed Windows 2000 server on the machine. And everything was working fine until I was going to transfer some very large files over to my other computer (DVD isos 4,5 GB) and then the machine just locks up. And I have to reset it to get it up and running again.
I have changed the network adapter and reinstalled the whole system, but it doesnt help.
When i look under the device manager there is an unknown device called "unknown pci bridge" it seems its the AMD 768 chipset.
But here comes the real problem, I cant instal any AMD drivers?? When i try to instal the EIDE driver, the 768 chipset driver or any of the AMD drivers its just saying that there is no AMD components found.... And the driver wont instal.
    Anyone heard of this before?
    MSI K7D Master
    2 X MP1900 CPUs
    Adaptec 29160 scsi board
    2 X Seagate U160 18GB SCSI disks
    1 X Seagate 200GB IDE disk
    1 X Samsung 250GB IDE disk
1,5 GB ram Crucial and Apacer
Edit: Problem solved, seems that I must have an PS2 mouse plugged in
When I tried copying with the PS2 mouse it all works
I found this topic in www.2cpu.com

    Speaking of strange problem... lol

    Juansebastianco,
you can try this, to see if it makes a difference: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it still crash after being on?

  • K7D Master Lock on memory test (even with corsair)

This has been a big problem and we're considering replacing the board with the Tyan 2466 which is rock-solid with a similar configuration.  I've had good experience with MSI's consumer products but unfortunately this board is a nightmare.
It has the common lock-up on memory detection error.  But i've tried just about every fix i've seen mentioned.  Here's the specifications:
    MSI K7D Master w/ BIOS 1.5
    Athlon MP 2400+ (dual)
    Intel PRO/1000 Server 64-bit 66MHz LAN
    Corsair 512MB PC2100 DDR Reg ECC CM72SD512R-2100
Adaptec 2100S Ultra 160 SCSI RAID
    3x IBM 7200RPM SCSI 18GB drives (RAID 5)
    Antec TruePower 480W PSU
I've tried several video cards (nVidia, ATI, and Matrox), as well as a few different types of RAM (Corsair, and 2 types of Smart Modular Technologies with Samsung and Micron chips).  Doesn't seem to be a power problem either, as it locks up just the same with no drives installed.
We've been having problems with this for weeks.  I'd like to get it working but if i can't, i don't have much choice other than to replace the board with one i KNOW will work, as this server is being used as part of a web cluster.  We originally had 2 but the other refused to detect any RAID cards so we sent it back right away.
Any thoughts on what solution there might be?

Intel is recommending that when installing new ram or changing the the ram, (moving from one memory slot to another).
That you not install your video card with DDR ram in it as the controlers or picking up info from the ram on the cards causing memory problems until after you have booted with the new memory to allow control to get it's settings.
I don't know if this is happing with the Nivida chip sets or not or even if it will help I installed mine with a ATI PCI with SDRAM video card and had no problems.
Also run memory 1 to 1.

  • K7D Master-L with LAN problems

I've just completed construction of my new K7D Master-L based machine and am running into LAN problems.  The first K7D Master-L I received had a bad IDE controller on it, and now the replacement board has intermittent LAN issues.
WinXP Pro installed fine, and I was able to install the LAN driver from the MSI CD and get things up and running fine.  After about 20 minutes or so, the LAN connection drops out and then comes back a few minutes later.  This cycle repeats over and over.  There are no duplicate IP addresses on the network, there are no errors in the XP system log, and all of the other systems on the network continue to work fine during these down periods.
I checked on the MSI website, and there are no drivers available for the Intel 82551QM lan controller that is on the K7D Master-L board.  Does anyone know where I can get an updated driver to try?  These types of problems are most frustrating to debug.
    Thanks,
    Norm

    Just an update to this:
The problem is definately the onboard LAN controller.  I've tried a Netgear card as well as a real PCI based Intel Pro 100 card and both are working great.  When I take the PCI cards out and try to use the onboard LAN, I still get intermittent outages.
Very strange.  If any MSI engineers are listening, I'd love to hear your opinions.  According to the OS, there are no IRQ, memory, or other conflicts that might be to blame.
