K7N2 & Durons - My Story

Here is my story in full:
I purchased the K7N2 to replace my aging Abit board, and I have a 1.3GHz Duron.  I was to give the old board to my wife, and put in it a 700MHz Duron I had lying around.  I also purchased a single stick of Apacer 512M PC3200 RAM.
I got the board, put the 1.3GHz Duron and the RAM in it, and set the FSB jumper to 100MHz, and booted it up -- and the onboard diagnostic told me that the CPU was "Damaged or incorrectly installed".  So, I tried the 700MHz Duron.  This time the onboard diagnostic told me it was a problem with my memory.  So, I tried memory from my work machine which as 2x512 PC3200 TwinX Corsair memory -- same error message.  I purchased 2x256 Crucial PC2700 RAM, and tried that -- same message.  I know both of the processors and all the memory to work perfectly, so after corresponding with MSI tech support, I RMA'd the board back to where I had ordered it (NewEgg), as that was MSI's suggestion.
I received a new board a couple of days later -- and STILL had the same "Damaged RAM or incorrect installation" diagnostic.  I knew something HAD to be up -- but MSI claims that Durons work with these boards -- even my old, slow 700MHz and 1.3GHz processors.  What to do?   I had seen in my varied research around the net that /maybe/ using a faster, more recent processor might work.  That seemed to be the only difference between my non-functioning machine and everyone else who has no problems.  So, I ordered an Athlon 2500+ Barton-core CPU.  It came in this morning.
I installed it and one of my PC2700 Crucial sticks -- and LO AND BEHOLD, it booted up!  Even with ALL of my RAM in it, it still worked A-OK, so the problem was apparently with the board's seeming incompatability with the Duron processors!
What gives?!?
Now that I have doubled my investment, I'm still quite happy with the board so far -- but I really wish I would have known about this apparently compatability issue.
Has anyone else noticed this?  MSI Support?

I tried and tried and tried to install XP on my new MSI 745 Ultra with a Duron 1.0 Ghz and Kingston PC2700 DDR.  Blue screened every time.  So I started swapping components left and right.  I actually bought two of everything, 745 Ultra, CPUs, memory, etc. so I had spare components to swap.  However, my newly purchased components went thru a trickle down effect.  One of the new CPUs and video card went into one of my existing machines.  Those components where then used for this new machine.  Therefore, I had a Duron 1.0 GHz and a Athlon 2100+.  When I used the Athlon, XP installed.  But when I used the Duron, blue screen.  I was determined to figure this out.  So I started swapping my 2 memory modules.  Then I put them in different DIM slots.  Still blue screened.  Then I tried pulling my old no name PC2100 DDR memory out of my old machine and tried it.  It worked!
I have yet to build my second MSI 745 Ultra machine with my Athlon 2100+ CPU and my Kingston PC2700 DDR.  However, assuming it installs correctly, my conclusion is that Duron and anything greater than PC2100 is not compatible with my 745 Ultra and probably not with your K7N2 either.
Hope this helps.

  • Using a Duron 1.3mhz FSB 200 on Msi K7N2

    This is what I've got, MSI k7n2-l,amd 1.3 duron 192k, 60g WD HD, ATI 8500LE 64mb, samsung DDR333 256 mb,
My question is, did anybody have any problems  using a Duron CPU on this motherboard or would this cpu work ok with my memory sammsung ddr333.
    Thanks Dandio   ?(

Lets start from the beginning,I bought all this parts to put a computer together. Once i put every thing together. Set FSB 100 for CPU, ready to start my computer. But having problem to boot. The Dled 1, 2 were red, stating that"i may have a damage cpu or not installed properly".Fans, lights were working but when i powered on and off sometimes the computer will shut off. So i removed
things i didn't need for my computer to boot. Kept Cpu,memory, and video card. Reseated cpu samething, put memory in different banks still samething, I even removed the video card, memory and cleared cmos. restarted, no beep. still samething Dled 1,and 2 are still red.Tried cpu on another board was working ok. At this point i was getting very frustrated X( . So i called the company where i bought the motherboard and they replace my board with a new one. Once i recieved it, I put everything back together
Guess what!! Still the same problem. this time i removed
the motherboard out case and mounted every without the case. Now lets try this again. This time on my Dleds 1,3, and 4 leds are red. now saying "the memory module is damage or not installed properly". When powering  on and off some times the computer shut down. At this point i knew that cpu is working ok. I've check my memory in another computer. works just fine.
Could it be that power supply is not supplying enough power or could be my memory stick is not compatible with the motherboard. I hope the motherboard is not **** again.
What would be my next step. Need your help?? :(
    Thanks

  • K7N2 ILSR recognizes 1700+ as 1400 duron...help

The problem is as the title states.
I have upgraded the BIOS to the very latest version(7.6) and everything runs fine and dandy even overclocked (145 Mhz) running DDR 290.
Upon post, processor reads that is running 1547 Mhz Duron....I have done everything I can think of
    Any suggestions?

Well...I have cleared the CMOS, but I will try again.
This problem has existed since I got the MB through several BIOS flashes and yes the FSB is set to 133(Jumper J10 is short to 1&2 and jumper J11 is Short)
I have used this processor in a K7T Turbo prior to upgrading to the K7N2 and it worked just fine overclocked to 2000+
Could this be a problem with the MB itself?  or even the processor?  I have screwed with the BIOS in every way that I can think of to get it to recognize.
There is one more thing, the first time I ever started up with this motherboard it read 'unknown processor 1700+'  Ever since then it has been recognizing as Duron.
My system is very stable and benchmarks very well which makes it seem to me like the processor is running correctly just not recognizing properly.
I think that it may be time to ask for a new processor for Xmas....
I appreciate the suggestions, keep'em comin.

  • [AMD] MSI MS-65703 K7N2 Delta 2 LSR & AMD DURON 1800 Running at 1972mhz

HI! well i so happy with my msi MSI MS-65703 K7N2 Delta 2 LSR mobo, its sweet!
i use a lot of msi boards at work and decided to buy another one for my self.
this machine is my file server and it gets some insane traffic 35+GB a week.
i have an 1800mhz duron over clocked using dynamic overclocking on the second highest setting.totally stable @1972mhz but pc wizard and a few other appz say my max speed is 2193 anything over 2 ghz i'll be stoked with i have updated to the new bios with no problems. since i dont know durons that well what is the max i can get out of this cpu. i would rather not use dynamic overclocking and set the settings my self, so i would love some advice on this one, like voltage settings, fsb and so on. i have a monster heatsink with 2 120mm fans and 5 case fans. the highest temp ever was 92deg so i'm running way cool. plus i have some decent ram and a good power supply so i would love to get the most i can out of this machine.
    anyways thanks!

Well the informative sticky by Kingfisher roxorz! i got both my comps running great!
my K7N2 Delta 2 LSR & AMD DURON 1800 is running at a bit over 2100mhz and its solid! my cpu temp never goes over 96deg thanks to artic silver 5 and a monster heatsink. the trick is to get your mem timings solid and i also had to move my dimms around to get dual channel that made a huge diff! the new nforce chipset drivers also help.
i got my other sys a K7N2 Delta 2 LSR & AMD ATHLON XP 2200 running great @ around 2230mhz at 99deg with the gigabyte cooler pro heatsink and 3GB of supertalent pc-3200 ddr. UNF!
each sys is in the large antec pro view 1000 server case w/ 5 80mm 3200rpm case fans and w/ geforce 5200 128mb vids
    thanks MSI!

  • MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR MB Problems, Need Help ASAP!! PLEASE

Ok  I just got this motherboard (MSI K7N2 Delta) Yesterday and after getting it setup I began overclocking the Processor (an AMD Athlon XP Barton Mobile 2500+) I was at 11x 215 1.750V Perfectly. I moved to 216 it started to seem unstable so I pushed the VCORE up to 1.775 and tried 217. It couldn't boot so I dropped it back down and decided ok 208 and a 11.5 multi might get me past the 2.4 mark which I was looking for. Well when I changed the Multi. to 11.5 and said save the system just sate as the flashing y for save. I could not change it to n I had already pushed enter So i firgured great and left it alone for a few minutes, nothing so I reset it. Now it refuses to boot/post. It spinds the fans the HD's the Network port is going but I get no picture. I have cleared the CMOS using the jumper I have removed the battery and power for over an hour and I still get nothing. I am assuming this is a BIOS error but I am not sure what to do to fix it. Does anyone here kno maybe, something I have yet to try something I can do? I would hate to RMA it and have to wait on newegg. Hell the thing is a day old. So please any idea's are welcome I have this posted on the Hard Forums as well but I am hopinh this forum may be more popular with getting help as no one is helping over there. Thanks!

    Hi,
Cross: Just in case you are doing something wrong there's a clear CMOS guide here, follow it to the letter (and don't forget to put the FSB jumper to SAFE beforehand - there's a note about it in the guide).
    How To Clear the CMOS
Your system board or CPU maybe not be dead yet - I had a similar problem with one of my boards and I tried everything - to cut a long story short I eventually got it working!!!
Btw, If you can't boot or get into the BIOS put your other CPU in (clear BIOS again after fitting!), so that you can prove whether your motherboard is working correctly!
Good luck!   I'm off ta bed!

  • Sapphire Radeon 9500 still a no-go with my K7N2-L

Well, it's been awhile and I'm still getting the run around.  MSI says the Radeon is bad, and Sapphire says the motherboard is bad.
Here's the short story.  I have a Sapphire 9500 (black PCB) 128, x8AGP.  When I install it, the system does not boot.  (Check sig for system specs.)  The D-led indicates a failed CPU.
The Sapphire works in other computers.
My system is currently using a Nvidia Aopen Geforce 2 64MB without a problem.
Has anyone managed to work around this?
What bios settings for the K7N2-L will work?  I've increased the aperture size before switching the cards to 128, and it still doesn't work.
Is there a voltage / power problem?
    Thanks..
This will probably be the last time I deal with problem.

  • [NF2] K7N2 Delta2 DVD-R/W won't write in DMA mode

Experienced builder, just built a new system, and my DVD-R/W will not write with DMA turned on.  It does with DMA turned off, but that takes 50 minutes for a single-layer DVD!  Have exhausted myself searching here and googling for an answer.  Here's the whole story, and thanks for reading:
I had two Socket-A systems with Gigabyte GA-7VTXE mainboards (VIA chipset), both running Windows 98SE, both with Sony DVD-R/W drives (one a DRU-530A SL, the other a DRU-800A DL) working perfectly using Nero 6 Ultra Edition.  The mainboard died (bad capacitors) in the system with the DRU-800 DL drive, so I bought a new MSI K7N2 Delta2 mainboard, and a new Antec Silent Case with Antec SmartPower 350W supply to put it in.  I moved the rest of the components over from the old system, including the DRU-800 drive, the AMD 2200+ CPU, the OCZ 512MB single stick, and the MSI GeForce 2.  The CPU and RAM are near-new, having been recently installed, and thoroughly burned-in.
With the same Windows 98 SE and Nero 6 Ultra, everything is recongnized, and will burn with DMA off (and it took far too long troubleshooting just to discover that).  But with DMA on, Nero begins the write process, does the lead-in, and then immediatly gives a "drive not ready" error.
Steps I've tried so far:  tried a new, 80-conductor cable.  Tried DVD-R/W drive as master and as slave, with and without the DVD-ROM drive, with proper jumper setting and cable positioning.  Updated Nero to the final Ultra 6 revision.  Updated the DVD-R/W drive firmware to latest.  Did a fresh install of Windows 98 SE, twice, once applying the MSI mainboard drivers and once not, afterward installing only Nero.  Went and bought a new DVD-R/W drive (LG 4167).  In every case, the results were exactly the same:  no go with DMA on, works (but unacceptably slow) with DMA off.  The two hard drives and the DVD-ROM drive appear to work properly with DMA on.  I downloaded the latest drivers from MSI, and they appear to be exactly the same as the ones on the CD which came with the mainboard.  [Though I bought the board new retail, it is after all an older model, but the CD must be fairly recent.]  It appears, though, that the mainboard drivers for Windows 98 SE do not include any IDE drivers (relying on MS IDE drivers?), only the XP MSI drivers include an IDE driver.
With two DVD-R/W drives displaying exactly the same problem, I don't think it is the drives.  The system appears stable in all other regards, the temperatures are very good, and it just doesn't appear to be a CPU, RAM, or power-supply issue.  I suspect either a mainboard/chipset/driver issue, but haven't been able to get any nearer a solution.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  If any further information is needed, please ask.  For example, I can't say the exact revision of the mainboard, because it isn't shown on the MSI site!  MSI shows only two K7N2 Delta2 boards:  the Platinum, and the FSR.  My board is neither of those, though it is almost identical to the Platinum, the only differences being that the board itself is red in colour (like the FSR), rather than the Platinum's blue, and that it does not have firewire.  The board layout itself is exactly like the Platinum, including the chipset fan, connector placement, etc.
EDIT:  Sorry for slight mis-information--the Delta2 board I have is not red in colour, I was thinking of my MSI 939 board (K8N Neo4 Platinum) which is red.  The K7N2 board is actually the colour of the Platinum, and in fact appears to be identical in every way except the missing firewire connectors and has only one Gb ethernet connector (if I've read the Platinum specs right, it has two).

Good work you got things going!   I was going to suggest a start disk, but wasn't sure of your intentions for XP.
    Thanks, Fredrik .

Did you ever manage to do a repair install of 98, as I asked in one of the first posts ever? I can't quite remember for 98, but for ME you find a folder C://Windows/Options/Install that contains the necessary files. But you would still need the 98-disk I believe to get the reg. code.
No, sorry.  I did fresh installs of Windows 98 SE more than once, both with and without drivers, updates, IE, DirectX, etc.  With 98SE, I couldn't find an actual 'repair install' option.  I think one would just do a fresh install over top of the existing install, and am not sure how that would be any different than the installs I've already done, but I can try it if you like?
Microsoft used to have an updated 98 Driver Library, but I can't find anywhere anymore to download it, so can't try that.
Intentions?  Well, I just read in a MS Forum thread that MSI (or any?) nForce3/4 chipset boards, such as the K8N Neo4 Platinum I'll be building next, don't support Win9x, so I suppose I'll need to use XP for now.  But, my real intention is to move to Linux !
EDIT:  You know, I was just reading, again in MS forums, that 9x does not support drives over 128GB.  You may have noticed that I have put a 160GB (decimal) drive on primary slave.  In the former system (again, 98SE on socket A board), that 160GB drive was on a Promise PCI IDE controller card with it's own BIOS, and with the Promise driver installed in 98SE.  This allows both 98SE, and even DOS 7.1, to see and use the full capacity of the drive, as a single partition, without problem; but, Windows Scandisk and Defrag don't work on it, of course.  But, I've got two PATA 160GB drives, going into two different systems, and only one controller card.  To make use of both large drives, I could A) buy another controller card, B) buy an available commercial 9x patch which does the same thing for 9x as the controller's driver, or C) just use XP for now, until getting moved over to Linux.  So I'm thinking that more or less settles it.  It's a real disappointment that the cause of the 98SE/nForce2 problem wasn't found, but I want to thank everyone for all the help you've given!

  • Banging My Head Against a K7N2 Delta

Hi All, Really need some advise.
I am on My 2nd K7N2 Delta Motherboard.
    I am running a 350 W PSU, +3.3 28A, +5 30A and 12v 15A. Running a Duron 1.1 Ghz., 512 MB DDR3200. Video Card is a Shoddy 64mb AGP (4x).
Ok so I install the Motherboard, CPU checked inserted correctly, AGP card the same, Power on….. and D bracket shows Bad Processor, no video output. So Processor taken out, placed back into old board Works fine. So back into MSI board and the same think, take board back exchanged for a new one and exactly the same.
Can anybody help or suggest anythink, I have tried 2 power supplies, running the board with and without the 12v Power connection. And with No Hard disks. All giving the same results.
Just to add a note, i no the CPu you is **** but i intend to invest as soon as i get the board working, and also been on the PSU calc thing and it says i will need 237w so i think the PSU should be fine.
I am willing  to try any experiements you guys give me.
    Rich

When my computer boots the cpu shows as a XP3200 which runs at 2.2 gig.
I had no problems just walked the Bios up to 200 FSB X 2 =400 FSB,
    200 X 11 = 2.200.
    The XP2500 runs at 166 x 2 = 333 FSB, 166 X 11 = 1.83 stock settings.
The XP2500 is a good overclocker I bought mine from Newegg for 90.
More info on your ram what brand?  The Nvidia memory controler is pickey about ram just because it works in another board does not mean it will work.
Also as you go to faster processor that or running around 90 watts the power supplys also become very inportant what worked with a 1 gig may not have enogh.
Memory problems can show up as bad processor as will not enogh power from psu.
Also make sure that the heat sink and thermal greese or applied correctly.
Set ram 1 to 1 so that it's running at same FSB as CPU.
Might try a PCI video card if you can borrow one to try.
Change one thing at a time.

  • K7N2-L motherboard problems, and questions!

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, but I think it is.
I have a K7N2-L motherboard that is giving me fits! I can't find this board in the data base to try and trouble shoot my issue, either.
    Here's my questions:
Problem 1) There are three empty spaces in the floppy drive connection (plug) of this motherboard. Two of the spaces are in the second row, and are side by side, and don't appear to have ever had pins installed. This may be normal. These two empty spaces (blue X's) correspond to spots that don't even have holes through the motherboard to even install any pins. However, the third missing connector pin does appear to have had a pin soldered into it (red X), but now there is no pin. Also, when I attempt to start the system, the motherboard does post and will allow you to enter the BIOS set up. However, at the same time, I get a "Floppy Drive - FAILURE" warning during this part of the start up. This indicates to me that the drive is not being detected, and it may be caused by the suspected missing pin (red X). Here is a crude visual of the floppy plug lay out in question. The green I's indicate existing pins, and the X's the missing pins. The blue X's are the ones that appear to never have had pins, but the red X appears to have had a pin, as it's soldered, but is missing. Please, note the notch at the top of this crude illustration for proper orientation of the plug. If you have any info on this, please, give me some insight as I can't find any way of referencing this problem.

    Floppy Connector Layout
Problem 2) It's possible this problem is a BIOS problem, and could be corrected with a BIOS update. However, since I don't currently have a floppy drive, I can't update the BIOS. I've set the BOOT priority in the BIOS as, 1-Floppy; 2-CD-Rom; 3-HDD0. However, the board selecting the devices in the proper order, and thus I can't get any of my drive to boot from either a CD or a Hard disc. I do know that the processor I'm using is good, as it came out of another operating system board. The processor is an AMD Duron 1800/266 FSB. Here's what is being seen with the BIOS with regards to the processor. If, in the BIOS, I set the FSB to 100MHz the processor shows as a 1200MHz processor instead of an 1800. However, when I reset the BIOS FSB to 133MHz (as it should be) the BIOS now shows the processor as a 1900+. Neither of these is correct. Any ideas as to what may be going on?
    Thanks in advance.........

    Hi
I just checked 8 motheboards that I have laying around from MSI, Asus, Intel and Biostar.  The pin location that you have marked in red does not have a pin in it.  The ones that you marked in blue do have pins in them.  If you are not the original owner, it may be that someone tried to replace a couple of broken pins and gave up.
A bios update should take care of the failure to recognize your Duron 1800.  I have provided a link where you can see the later bios revisions.

  • K7N2 (MS6570) m/board errors

I bought motherboard 5 months ago and running fine for current specs until today, it suddently hang without notice and refuce to boot. But sometimes when i can boot successful, it will :-
    1. Hang during windows booting (blank screen); or
    2. Immediately after windows success loading (hang up); or
    3. When i play vcd (monitor shutdown, pc still on).
Even i have reinstall windows xp, still the same.
If it happen to boot failed during pc startup, the LED show 1-Red, 2-Red, 3-Red, 4-Green (testing cpu clock & vga) and i can heard siren.
I tried to change agp, but still same errors.
Could anybody can help me? Is this a hardware or software problem and how to solve?
    My pc specs:
    MSI K7N2 (MS6570) with agp build-in
    2 x Kingston value DDR333 512MB
    1 x Seagate Baracuda IV (60GB)
    1 x Quantum Fireball lct10 (15GB)
    1 x Sony 16x DVD Rom
    1 x Sony 4x CDRW
    1 x Asus GeForce4 440MX SE 64MB
    Power Supply 400watt
    Temperature between 37c-47c
    Thank you.

I have try to switch the ram but no help. Still hang.
Then i found that my processor's fan was not functioning, after changing the fan, i still cannot boot the pc.
So i used Duron 800 to test, now i can boot to the windows, and it can run for 2 hours, then hang again.
What is wrong? Is that too hot? Or both my m/board and cpu already melt because the fan malfunction yesterday?

  • K7N2 D-ILSR over Abit's NF7-S? Convince me!

Okay, the title pretty well sums it up. My heart's been set on the Delta-ILSR for the last several months but now that the time's come for me to buy I've had to stop & reconsider. I've been going thru forums & reviews left & right the last few days and I'm a bit disappointed in what I'm hearing about the MSI board & MSI's lack of support. After reading all 23 pages of the video card fiasco it seems that MSI's finally headed in the right direction.
    Here are my component choices:
    Barton 2500
    2 x 256 PC2700 Crucial
I plan on using my ATI Radeon 7200 for awhile (I'm not much of a gamer, right now, at least.)
    Here are my concerns:
    1) I don't much care for the lack of being able to disable SATA RAID but I don't know how much of pain this actually is. Chances are that I'll never actually need RAID. This system will start out as a PC & within the next few months or so will double as a server for a small home network.
    2) I've heard a few people who work for companies building systems say that the K7N2 Delta-ILSR has had a fairly high return rate, (one person said about 50%). Some were RAM related, (which I don't think will be a problem with my RAM choice), and some wouldn't boot or had other problems.
    3) I've heard that the Abit NF7-S's sound has a crackling sound, how is the Delta's sound?
    4) I have no plans to overclock, (I've never done it before, although I'd like to try it sometime to see if it's worth it all.), but I like the fact that the NF7-S can do so right outta the box. I thought MSI was known for this.
So, here I am, stuck in between a rock & a hard place.   I've always thought highly of MSI & I've had my heart set on this purdy lil red mobo running circles around my PC Crypts, uh... Chips, 810 LMR with a 750 Duron. But, the Abit board seems to have less complaints & supposedly is equal to the Delta in "real-world" tests.
Can those of you with personal experience convince me to go on & get the MSI?
Thanks for your time & help on this matter. It's very much appreciated!

Yeah, a lot of people don't take that into consideration. I feel that user error is the leading cause of setup failures & RMAs.

I didn't think so either but figured I'd ask. Heh, I'm the type of guy that digs all the way to the back of the shelf to get a box of whatever that hasn't been opened & then inspect it to make sure it's not been re-packaged, usually opening it right there before I buy it to make sure everything's there. Scratch that idea.

Ahh, the school of hard knocks, 'eh?   I know that teacher well.
I've been checking out some of the Antecs at Newegg.

    LOL!!! Ya got that right!!!

You certainly did the right thing by coming here before you bought the board - If'n you're gonna spend money it pays to check the goods out with the end users first!
Thanks! Reviews are good to give ya a good general idea of a board's performance but the reviewers usually don't have the time to really get a good feel for the board in normal, everyday use. Nothing beats personal experience.

Anyway, If you do go the MSI route, you can come and chat with us can't you?
I've got a feeling you'll be seeing a bit more of me.

You don't know how many people don't surf the message boards before they buy. They come here to complain or ask for help after they have assembled with incompatible RAM PSU's etc etc.
Well, actually, I do. I've been a member of a tech forum for just over a year now where I try to help out with what lil bit I do know when I have the time. There's 4 members there supporting the NF7-S from personal experience but I've told 'em from the get-go that I was MSI biased but was still trying to have an open mind before opening my wallet.
I really do appreciate ya'll takin' your time to help me make the decision that's right for me. You guys have got some class. Ya'll didn't start any flame wars or "MSI is better just because it is.". I've been here in front of this screen for 'bout 5 hrs now so I'm gonna take a break for awhile & I'll post my decision a little later on.
Once again, thanks a bunch! I hope I didn't leave anyone out while replying, if so, I'm sorry.

  • K7N2 Delta No Raid or Sata - Refuses to install OS

    Hi
From what I gather, I think I have bought a bit of a tricky board and hopefully some fine people in here may help me resolve my dilemma.
    The Mainboard:
MSI K7N2 Delta without RAID or SATA.
    The Components to be installed:
Athlon MP 1800+ completely bog standard
    S3 S8 Nitro 256 8x AGP
    2x256 paired PC2700 Micron DDR DIMM's
Benq 16x DVD Writer Secondary Master
Maxtor 40Gb IDE Diamond Max HDD Primary Master
IDE Cables are extremely high quality ATA133 jobs.
    Power Supply:
Brand New Delux 450 Watt with home built power conditioning throughput - Extremely little fluctuation even under massive load!
This little lot above is sitting in my Asus A7V333 mobo, it is a brilliant little setup but I intend to open the 1800 up or crank up a Duron Applebred which a friend had performing like a dream when he unlocked it...
    The Issue:
I have been building and playing with PC's since I built my first Sinclair ZX80 way back in the 70's, so I know what's what in a box.
I put the mobo in the case, connected it all up, connected it up and hey presto, a POST screen and I managed to get into BIOS.
    Then it died...
Waited the requisite ten to fifteen seconds after turning the PSU off, again, shut down.
I checked the J10 and J11 jumpers, set J10 to safe (100Mhz) leaving J11 closed, we have a stable BIOS but a CPU that is running at 1150Mhz and no manner of messing with the frequency settings will move that Mhz up.
So I decided to persevere, put XP in, started to load, go to the message "Setup is starting Windows" and again it shut off.
    Odd!
Took out one of the mem DIMMS, reset J10 to 133/166, shut off, reset, moved the DIMM to another slot, and again, off it went and so forth.
Changed the memory to a Kingston 128Mb, again powered off.
Put an ATi Radeon 9250 in it... same old same old...
A Nvidia GeForce 2 MX replaced the ATi, beginnning to look at smashing the thing to pieces in frustration, dies at either startup or "Setup is starting Windows"
Pulled the DVD drive, still the same, did all this with the FSB set to 100Mhz, got as far as Setup is starting Windows and died.
Found a stock XP 1800+, stuck that in, followed the above and stil it would either go past BIOS screen in 133/166 or would crash at "Setup is starting Windows"
Now, why have I not sent this board back...?
I took it round a friends, who stuck a 2400+ in, some crappy old Samsung memory, his case has "El Cheapo" stamped on the PSU and the bloody thing powered up right as rain...
So we reflashed the BIOS, used the manual again to set it up for the 1800+ and I brought it back, no go...
Ye Gods, This is a sore trial indeed and I am beginning to regret being coaxed into taking this board on, playing Need For Speed Most Wanted on my Asus looks superb (the S8 Nitro is a really underrated card).
Any ideas before its "Hammer Time"..?
    Ancient One

    Hi
I only have PC2700 unfortunately being somewhat misled by Crucial that my FSB would run at 333 if I put it into the Asus.
I have rejected the GeForce because it really looks 'orrible running under the board, it may be failing in any case but the artefact seems to be there only when installed to the MSI, on the Asus, it runs perfectly and gets a reasonable score on 3dMark 2001 for what it is.   Being an MX means that even though its bigger spec than some GF3s , the memory is a lot lot older claiming to be DDR when in fact it is early SD.   The Abit Radeon 9250 is my trusty reference card as it can stoop to 2x if need be but will run in all sockets but doesn't perform as well in any way with the S8 Nitro which apperently has futureproof tech in anticipation of DX10.
The board I have, has 5 pastel green jumpers, CMOS clear at 1-2, J10 & 11 plus two down the bottom left that I can't find reference to in my manual, I suspect these are to do with the sound and USB capabilities so thought to check what these were.
The BIOS flash didn't change anything and in the BIOS I noticed that I was getting thermal readings from the temp sensor so thats out of the window as well.
FSB settings I have tried are 9 x 166, 11.5 x 133 and variations in between trying to make up 1534 or thereabouts.
I am wondering of a pinout mod to the XP socket might do the trick if I can out the FSB locks, I noticed that I cannot change the voltage Vcore to 1.75+ which is the juice that the Palomino needs, it is stuck on 1.60+ thus undervolting it somewhat, on the Asus there is a jumper for freeing the volting up, I wonder if there is anything the same on the MSI...?   I tmight be detecting the MP as a mobile and then finding it locked thus not able to process the chip as it should be eg less volts and variable rates of frequency... Hmmm
There is more though...  I found an old Duron 950, ran the system up on 100FSB and the second jumper open and vóila, went past the point of "Setup is starting Windows" and began to install on the HDD.
So it is looking increasingly like a conflict with the Athlon's of the 1800 variety...
On an aside about temps, I found that an hour on Prime95 can "cook" the artic silver and gain anything up to a 4 degree average cooler temp, I also use S2K bus disconnect software as well as them Palomino cores don't like switching themselves off into the halt states do they?
BTW Delux state that the PSU should exceed the given expectations but I wonder about this as I had to condition the output because it was quite wide in its fluctuations on the scope, I found a thing on the net on how to condition the output, so that it never drops under the expected voltage but can freely be drawn on as demand requires.   The advantage of the Peliter kit was I could run other fans directly off it leaving the 12V rails with less demand but pulse emulators are never as good as a 2700rpm rotor in keeping the board assured that a fan is spinning.   The MSI board isn't exactly abound with fan plugs...
    Thanks all again

  • Dead K7N2 Delta2 Mobo?

I hope someone can help me. I just loaded my new K7N2 Delta2 mobo a couple days ago. It was working fine. I turned it off for the night and when I tried turning it on in the morning it did not boot up at all. Nothing is working... no fan noises or anything. When I push the power on button on the front of the computer, the green light comes on for a second, but that is all. I have swapped out everything in the computer you can think of. Everything works fine in another computer. I replaced the power source and still nothing happens. Is it possible the mobo is shot?
    K7N2 Delta2 w/Duron 1800
    Kingston 512MB PC3200 184 Pin DIMM
    40 Gig WD HD
    Samsung DVD/CD-R/RW
    Generic Floppy Drive
    A-Power 550W ATX Power Supply:
    115V, 230V switchable power supply
    +3.3V @ 28A
    +5V @ 40A
    +12V @ 20A
    -12V @ 08A
    -5V @ 0.5A
    +5 Vsb @ 2A
    WindowsXP Home

"...I replaced the power source and still nothing happens..." Well, you suspect the P.Su, but you don't say a word about it, nor the specs of the one you used to replace it, so we can't answer at all. If you want help, you must tell us about all the hardware you are using in your PC, includding of course how much AMPS  does both P.Sus. give to 3.3, 5 and 12v. rails.

  • K7N2 Delta-L Nforce2 System compatibility

    Hi,
    I'm thinking of building a system with the following components;
    MSI K7N2 Delta-L Nforce2 Motherboard
    AMD Duron 1.8GHz
    Crucial 256MB DDR PC2700
    Asus ATI Radeon 9200SE/T 64MB
Akasa AK-825 Air-Cooled Copper Base Carnival Cooler
I'm on a very limited Budget and this is about as far as I can stretch it. Can anybody see any potential problems with this setup - or suggest better suited components for similar price?
I was going to build the system with the older KT4V Ultra Motherboard (I have a system happily using this board at the moment) but I was advised NForce 2 is a much better option.
    Many Thanks for your time,
    AT.

If you buy the ram directly from crucial and use the memory selcetor it should be very stable.
I have bought from crucial 3 times and I have been very pleased.
How much are you spending on the duron cpu? as it may not be a good buy.
    VERY IMPORTANT
    1) The duron has a 133mhz FSB therefore getting PC2700 ram is pointless as the CPU cannot use the extra bandwidth. So you can SAVE MORE MONEY by getting PC2100 RAM and still have the same performance.
    2) The nforce 2 is a better buy and when you buy the ram make sure you get
2 sticks of 128mb PC2xxx, this is to use the DUAL channel memory feature.
    For better performance.

  • Please help - K7N2 delta-L upgrade compatibility?

    Hello there,
Having perused the forms for a while in research I know my appeal will not fall on deaf ears. I'm about to buy a new mobo, CPU, vid card and RAM and would be eternally grateful for an OK as regards memory issues etc.
    I'd like:
    MSI K7N2- Delta L
    Duron 1.6 GHz
    Geforce4 MMX 400 64MB
    256 Crucial PC3200
But I've heard the mobo is picky about both the memory and Duron CPUs. Would getting the latest driver solve the CPU problem and would this RAM work? I'm a newbie but would like to get into overclocking eventually. With this in mind, what should I look for in RAM? CL? I will drop in an XP 2500+ eventually and another stick of RAM for the dual channel goodness!
    Many thanks.

I get the exact same temperatures, 60'C max load though. I don't see it as a problem since I live in Greece and right now the temperature outside is a good 40'C ! During the winter the temps (cpu, case and outside ) drop a lot (don't know how much since I only built my system about a month ago).
For me, under these circumstances, the best cooling option if I want to further drop my temps, is turn on the airconditioner in my room !
