K7N2 - Ide, Floppy, Cd-rom, Cdrw?

For those who have *fully functional* K7N2 motherboards, what Ide and Floppy cables are you using and what Cd-Rom or Cdrw did you use to boot windows and or hd disk.

Spun have you stripped down your machine to the basics yet?
Install just what you need to boot the machine:
Processor
Motherboard
Memory (1 stick if you can do that)
Floppy
CDROM
Hard Drive
Video Card
Set the jumper to clear your CMOS, make sure to unplug the machine first. Then boot it and see if it boots.
If it doesn't put in another stick of memory first and boot. Usually memory is the leading cause of non boots like this.
If that doesn't help then unplug the floppy and the cdrom and try again.
If that doesn't help then try a different hard drive. (This is why I keep a spare drive with WinME loaded on it, I can pop it in pretty quick to see if I have a bad drive)
If all of the above doesn't work then you've only really got three things to check:
Go for the Power Supply first as you may be trying to pull too much from it. Get something that's 300W or better to ensure you'll have plenty of upgrade power.
Motherboard or Processor could be bad and those are the hardest things for regular puter users to check as they usually don't have extra stuff laying around (Like me cause I troubleshoot and repair ppls systems)
Hope you get it working!  8)

• DVD ROM/CDRW on same channel, no worky

I have a CD-RW (set as SLAVE) and a DVD Rom (set as MASTER) connected to IDE2. Only the DVD is reading media. If I remove the DVD and make the CDRW master, it will then read media. The device manager shows no problems with either device. They work fine independently, just not on the same IDE channel.
Any ideas?

Thanks for the tip.
Both devices work fine on seperate channels.
I've switched my drives' master/slave jumpers back and forth. I've replaced the IDE cable. Checked the BIOS and the Device Manager and there were no conflicts or problems in general. Windows does see both drives (as location 1 and 0). However the CDRW will not read media as either a slave or a master on the same channel as the DVD Rom. The DVD on the other hand can read in either state. Would there be any reason my CDRW wants full priority perhaps? I'm drawing a blank. Oh and the CDRW is a Lite On 40125s

• Floppy, CD-Rom ...

May I direcrly work with devices like floppy disk (format) or CD-Rom (eject) on Java2 Platform.

Not without making native calls to the OS. Remember that these devices may be represented very differently on different platforms.

• K7N2 IDE Drives and the 137G limit

There doesn't appear to be a specific set of IDE drivers for the K7N2 with respect to the regular IDE controller.  I hooked a 200G Maxtor up to the regular IDE controller, expecting to use the full 200G under Windows 2000, but alas, it came up with the infamous 137G limit!  I moved the drive to onboard Promise controller(IDE3) and got the full 200G but it has it's own drivers.  The driver update pack from MSI lists a separate driver for IDE, but I have yet to find it, and would it handle drives over 137G anyhow? I read somewhere on the forum that the max limit was 160G.  I would be quick to point out that drives larger than a 137G are becoming common and CHEAP!  I got my 200G drive for US$140!

• Drivers for IDE floppy drive?

Hello!
I have an old 400mhz Sawtooth G4, booting into both 10.4.9 and 9.2.2. I also have some disks I need to access - 3.5" floppy disks! (Phew!) We had a Iomega (Imation?) USB "Superdisk" drive, but when I tried it, I found that the enclosure didn't work - the power plug was damaged.
So, I figured "Well, it's a IDE drive on the inside, so why not put it into the G4's empty ZIP slot? I was able to buy an adapter that converts from the standard 4-pin power cables that are inside the G4 to the kind on the floppy, and was able to get the drive plugged in as a slave drive to the DVD drive. Under OS X, it comes up and reads just fine! Under OS 9, it won't work. It just sits there, reading and reading, waiting for the OS to ask for it... I need to be able to read some of these disks under OS 9, so although OS X supports the drive, it won't work.
So, is it possible to find floppy drives for IDE drives, compatible with OS 9.2.2? I know that the old Beige G3 Mac has a floppy drive, and will run OS 9, so I figure that there has to be a driver somewhere; not to mention that OS 10.4 has a built in driver. All I need is 1.4 MB support, not the "Superdisk's" fancy proprietary 120MB disk support.
-Dan
PS: If I can get OS 9 to read the disks, how can I make a duplicate copy? Or more specifically, a "virtual" copy - a disk image - which I can use as backup? I've used OS X for this purpose before (on CDs), but 9 won't read X's images.

Hi, Dan -
You may need to download and install the latest driver for OS 9 for that drive. You can get that here -
Imation - USBSuperDisk Driver 3.3a
Note - that's a direct download link, about 370MB.
If I can get OS 9 to read the disks, how can I make a duplicate copy? Or more specifically, a "virtual" copy - a disk image - which I can use as backup? I've used OS X for this purpose before (on CDs), but 9 won't read X's images.
For a simple backup, you can just copy the floppy to the hard drive - it will appear there as a folder.
If you need an actual disk image, you can use the Disk Copy utility which is included with all standard OS 9 installs to make a disk image of the floppy.

• K7n2 ide problem

i recently updated my system drivers for my k7n2 delta-ilsr to stop it crashing, it did stop crashing but now it doesn't recognise either of my cd drives, both on secondary, recognises my hard drive fine, in device manager it says that the primary and secondary ide controllers are faulty, any sugestions?

i think its running off the drivers that came with the most recent system drivers, so probably, i would install the old ones from the cd if it wern't for the fact that i cant use my cd drives. do you know where i can get some other drivers from?

• K7n2-ilsr Floppy Error

Why can’t I access the floppy disk drive after I install the Windows XP?

During boot, I get a screen about the FastTrak controller (Promise), which says that no drive is attached to the FastTrak controller, and the BIOS is not installed (Is this just a matter of not using the RAID connection?). BIOS POST's normally, all drives are recognized properly.
Normal, if you aren't using it POST will report that. You are correct.
Quote
Startup continues to the splash screen, then I get a STOP message that the boot drive is inaccesible. (I can't get to the machine right now to reproduce the codes)
I had an issue like that when I had my faster RAM set to SPD.Relax the timings a little and see what happens.

• Satellite 1410 dvd rom / cdrw combo replacement procedure

How do you replace the dvd/cdrw combo drive in a Satellite 1410?
There is only one visible screw on the bottom that is fastened to the drive.
I also removed the hard disk and battery, and the other covers on the bottom and did not find any other screws.
I removed the keyboard and did not find any additional visible screws that hold in the cd drive.
Does anyone know the removal procedure, or have a link to a maintenace manual?

• Boot problems with IDE HD and SATA HD on K7N2-Delta L

I'll get right to the point.
I have an PCI SATA Controller Card in my system (using a K7N2 Delta-L motherboard, BIOS v5.7 with an Athlon XP 2800+ and Corsair ValueSelect 512MB DDR400 RAM on a single stick).  My system works fine in it's original configuration of drives (CD-RW drive only drive on IDE bus, and SATA drive only hard drive).  However, upon installing my IDE hard drive from my old computer, the system will no longer boot right.  I am connecting the other IDE HD as Slave on the CD-RW's bus, as I'm reserving the second bus for bigger and better things such as a DVD burner, and speed isn't too important for this hard drive as it's just my MP3/data I don't need in a hurry drive.
In the current configuration, all three drives are detected properly (CD-RW and HD detected on the IDE detection screen, and the SATA drive detected on the SATA card's detection screen).  However, after the SATA detection screen, the system just stops.  The cursor is still blinking, but nothing comes up.
Both hard drives are Western Digitals (IDE is a ATA100 Western Digital 60GB at 5400 RPM, and the SATA is a Western Digital 36.7GB at 10,000 RPM), and the CD-RW is a HP CD-Writer 9100.  I have Windows XP installed on both hard drives (first partition of the IDE, which is divided into two), but considering the system doesn't even attempt to boot I don't think that's an issue.  I've gone through and tried enabling and disabling "Boot Other Device", but still no love.  My boot order is set to Floppy, CD-ROM, and SCSI, which works fine when the SATA drive is in there.
Any idea what's up?  I can provide more information upon request, as I'm sure there's something I forgot to mention that's important.
Thanks.

Take a look at this link, https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threadid=71384, I think you both have the same problem. It seems that a sata drive doesn't like having an ide drive in the system that has an active partition.
Do like Wonkanoby suggest, reformat the ide hard drive and make sure that it's not set to be the active partition in the system. Boot with a 98 boot floppy if you have to so you can format the ide drive to fat32, once you can boot up using the sata drive you can use xp disk manager to convert the ide drive to ntfs.

• Weird problems with K7N2-L

Hi,
I've had a browse through the forum, and some of the posted problems do have a relation to mine, but mine are a bit more "weirder".
I have a XP2000 CPU, K7N2-L, 512DDR Pc2100 RAM.  I am using PCI slot1 for my modem, and AGP slot for my GF2MX.
Anyway, I installed everything into the case, I have a 300Watt PSU btw.  Switched the thing on for the first time and nothing happened.  I looked at the DLED, and it was hung on memory test.  So I took it out, and put it in DIMM 2 (previously been in DIMM 1).  Switched here on, and it booted but for only a short while, then i restarted.  I then swapped it in to DIMM 3, and am now able to use my computer.
Anyway., I installed windows xp, all the drivers.  Now then, a problem must have developed as I started getting BSOD's such as:
MEMORY_MANAGEMENT
BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
I had this problem with a previous system and with that, I just ran the CPU and DDRAM at lower speeds.
So thats what I did, I managed to quickly get into BIOS and change the CPU to 100Mhz, and Ram to 100Mhz too.  Now I am running my XP2000 at 1.25Ghz, 75% of its capacity and my system is stable.
However! I still get some strange problems when I sometimes switch on the pc, or restart it.  Sometimes I just get a blank screen and the DLED has hung on the Memory test.  I have to take the power cable out to turn off the PC, and then wait about 5 seconds, put it back in, and i might be lucky to get it started.  Sometimes after about 10 tries of doing this, I just have to reset BIOS and try again, and go through the BIOs settings again.
I am now running a stable computer, but the DDRAM is at 100Mhz, and the CPU is at 100Mhz so I am not getting my full potentioal out of my components. CPU temp is 48*C btw.
What do you think I should do?

I agree with all the above.  AMD recommend at least 15A on the 12V rail with a peak output of 18A.  I've run a stable system with a 300W PSU, similar in power rating but I had a slightly lower consumption:
Athlon 1.4
SiS715 chipset
256MB DDR
CDRW
CDROM
Geforce2GTS
Network card
USB webcam
USB mouse

TV tuner
10/100 Network Card
2 sticks pc133
2 system fans
fairy lights
USB devices - scanner, mouse, digital camera.
Bearing in ming that the piii doesn't draw from the 12v rail, it's quite enlightening.
Have a look at your voltages in the bios.  This will help to find out wether it is a psu or memory related problem.  At a guess:
If 3.3V are constantly less than 3.3v
And 5V are constantly less than 4.9v
And 12V is less than 11.89v
edit:
As far as I have found, voltage tolerance should be
Which translates to
3.3V +/-4%= 3.186-3.432V
5V    +/-5%= 4.750-5.250V
12V  +/-5%= 11.4V-12.6V
Then a new PSU may help stability.  I'll try to find out what the operating parameters actually are and give some better figures at a later date.  Some PSU's will happily supply 110-120% of their rated wattage before blowing some capacitors (heh, I've managed to actually do this).
                                       ------------- MEMORY_MANAGEMENT
BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
These  bsods suggest bad ram.
We are of course assuming that you've done a clean install - the previous operating system has been removed, either by formatting or renaming.
If you are underclocking, you are both reducing the power needed for your system, and the strain on memory.  There is one thing for certain - it's hardware.  Sometimes re-seating your components helps.

Hello,
What is the make/model of the memory (both sticks the same?).
You may have some faulty memory or you need to increase the memory voltage.
Here is a program to test the memory for errors.
http://www.memtest.org/download/1.55.1/memtest86+-1.55.1.floppy.zip
Extract it to a folder first then run the install.bat and it will create a memtest bootdisk for you.
Run it for 1 hour and see what happens, if you get any errors instantly then stop and try the program with 1 memory stick at a time.(1 hour again or stop and swap sticks if you get any errors.)
Report back here with your results
Also try 2.7v for the memory.
Are you using slots 1 and 3 for Dual channel mode?
Your CPU should be running at 2.2Ghz, 200 x 11.

• No power when IDE cable plug into mainboard

The motherboard I'm working with is a K7 Pro ATX IR3 Mainboard. Whenever I plug in the IDE cable to the mainboard, it seemed that there is no power coming from the power supply. I tried this with a cd-rom and the light isn't lit or do anything. As soon as I unplug the IDE cable from the mainboard, the CD-ROM works...meaning I can push the button for open and close. All the lights, HD and Power lights, on the front of the case are not even flashing or turn on.
If anyone has any suggestion I'm greatly appreciated.
ljCharlie
     ?(

Sorry for the confusion. In this situation when I talked about cable, I mean the IDE cable or floppy cable and not the power supply cable. I have one floppy, cd-rom drive, hard drive, sound card, and a video card. I believed the power supply is a 400 watt, although I'm sure. I just purchased this last week so I am pretty it'll handle what I am trying to do. When I turn the computer on these are the things I believed that are running with all three cables one end plugged into the mainboard and the other end to the devices such floppy, hard drive, and cd-rom.
cpu
cpu fan
case fan
D-LED light is on
Devices that are not runing with all three cables plugged in to the mainboard and the other end to the devices such floppy, hard drive, and cd-rom.
floppy drive
cd-rom drive
hard drive
HD LED light
Power LED light
Now, if I unplug all the cables from the mainboard or from the devices then all the devices seem to have power coming to it.

• K7T266 Pro2-RU won't start DVD rom drive

Hi,
I have a K7T266 Pro2-RU MB running XP 1800+. I have been using it for over a year. Recently, I found out that I need to add a new HD to my system as I was running out of HD space. Let's start by giving my original system spec:
K7T266 Pro2-RU
512 MB DDR2100 RAM Kingston
Althon XP1800+
windows XP professional sp1
2 WD 80GB raid0 connected to IDE 3 and 4
IDE 1 master 16X DVD-rom
IDE 2 master 48X CDRW
I purchased and added a 120GB WD 7200 RPM (2MB model) to IDE 1 slave. Initially, everything was happy. I partition the new 120 GB into 3 logical drives each for 40GB. Last week, I decided to repartition the 120GB into 1 120 GB.  The DVD-rom stopped functioning. Windows XP said it won't start (error code 10). I un-installed and let windows re-installed its driver and it still won't start. I re-partitioned the 120GB HD into 2 60 GB HDs and same problem. I have not tried re-partition the 120 GB into 3 HDs again. But I will later this week. Does anybody know what the problem may be?
My MB is running the next to the latest version of the Bios (I just checked last night).
Does anybody know what the problem may be?
Any comment is welcome.
David

wonkanoby,
thanks for your help. After opening up my case, I tried setting my 120 GB HD to master jumper and the DVD to slave. They both remained on the same IDE port. It seems to have solve the problem. I am crossing my finger for this one. If it fails again later, I will try your suggestion.
Again, thanks for your help.
David :D
