K7N2-ILSR IDE/RAID Slot 3

Hi Guys, I have built and repaired a number of PC's over the years but I've never had any experience of RAID.  I've just treat myself to a new system based around the K7N2-ILSR board and would like to know if the RAID channel of IDE port 3 Can be used and accessed just the same as any other IDE channel.  I was thinking of future expansion should my existing drives approach capacity could I simply use this channel to add another drive.
I would appreciate any advise on this subject.
Thanks

you can connect 1 harddrive to ide3.
and you must create a raid0 array even if its alone.
with a hacked bios its possible to use 2 drives.
sofar only talked to one guy and he used 2 sata and 2 pata in 2 raid0 arrays and it worked good for him

    Dear Tech Wizards,
    Stupid little question...
Any performance issues with hooking up two IDE drives (ATA 133) onto the IDE 3 Raid connection on the K7N2-ILSR MB?
Just curious since my ASUS board (P4PE) using individual IDE connectors for the IDE setup (you know, one drive, one connector).
This is my foray into MSI territory.  I have always used ASUS boards in the past.  I like the layout of this board since it has the new NForce chip set and IDE Raid.  When I'm done, I'll have 2 GByte DDR 2700 RAM (matched 1 GByte chips), AMD XP 3000+ Barton, and two 120 MByte Maxtors (240 GByte) plus one other 120 GByte Maxtor on another IDE line for the OS.  Raids are tempermental and it is best not to have all your eggs in one basket.  I have found that AMD chips just kick ass for numerical computations.  They are about 30% faster than Intel's.  AMD's integer calculation capabilities are much, much better.
    Thanks a bunch,
    George

So, it looks like it is back to the trenches to find a decent MB that has IDE RAID and the NForce Ultra 400 chipset.
What about a mainboard without RAID. I don't think you get a mainboard with full-onboard-raid ever. That's the marketing of promise, highpoint et al. If I knew it former, I would have bought the delta K7N2-ILS. Onboard VGA and onboard RAID are not the best choice !!

  • [915 Series] How do I enable the IDE raid Slots (the yellow ones)

On the Bios there is an option to enable the onboard raid slots, but whem I
enable it, noting happens, and in the next restart, this item doen't show in
    the bios menu.
I read on the forum that this problem appened to other owners of this
motherboard, but I couldn't find any solution.
I've already installed the Via IDE Raid Drivers in "»Windows install »F6."
When I tried to install the upgrade of this drivers form the Drives&
utilities CD, a message apeard saying that it could't find the hardware, so I
installed them anyway from a floppy disk in "»Windows install »F6."
I have connected to the blue IDE slot one IDE drive and one DVD drive, and
in the second slot(yellow), another IDE drive.I've tried to exange the drive
positions but the drives on the raid slots where never recognized.
I know from the forums that others have solved this problem, so I think this
    is not a mainboard mailfunction.
Please someone help me in this issue.
    Thank you.

    Tanks everyone
I also tried that procedure but I thik i have a problem in Bios or in the motherboard.
When I enable The raid controler in Bios this Item just disapears form the options, next time I restart.
    Strange, no?
No mater I took the computer to the shop where I bought the Moterboard and monday, I hope I have good News.
At that time I'll give you notice of what's happening.

    hi,
the config with one maxtor 80GB sata harddrive was working
flawlessly for almost a year when suddenly array config dissapeared.
I can go to Fasttrack bios and make new config but when i am trying
to save it (ctrl+y) the utility hangs and reset is the only solution.
after reset there is no array config again.
    harddisk is correctly recognized.
i am going to flash a new bios with new controller software, maybe it will
help. i can not check the drive somewhere else. i don't want to loose
    the data either.
maybe someone had the same problem?
    please help.

  • K7N2 Delta No Raid or Sata - Refuses to install OS

    Hi
From what I gather, I think I have bought a bit of a tricky board and hopefully some fine people in here may help me resolve my dilemma.
    The Mainboard:
MSI K7N2 Delta without RAID or SATA.
    The Components to be installed:
Athlon MP 1800+ completely bog standard
    S3 S8 Nitro 256 8x AGP
    2x256 paired PC2700 Micron DDR DIMM's
Benq 16x DVD Writer Secondary Master
Maxtor 40Gb IDE Diamond Max HDD Primary Master
IDE Cables are extremely high quality ATA133 jobs.
    Power Supply:
Brand New Delux 450 Watt with home built power conditioning throughput - Extremely little fluctuation even under massive load!
This little lot above is sitting in my Asus A7V333 mobo, it is a brilliant little setup but I intend to open the 1800 up or crank up a Duron Applebred which a friend had performing like a dream when he unlocked it...
    The Issue:
I have been building and playing with PC's since I built my first Sinclair ZX80 way back in the 70's, so I know what's what in a box.
I put the mobo in the case, connected it all up, connected it up and hey presto, a POST screen and I managed to get into BIOS.
    Then it died...
Waited the requisite ten to fifteen seconds after turning the PSU off, again, shut down.
I checked the J10 and J11 jumpers, set J10 to safe (100Mhz) leaving J11 closed, we have a stable BIOS but a CPU that is running at 1150Mhz and no manner of messing with the frequency settings will move that Mhz up.
So I decided to persevere, put XP in, started to load, go to the message "Setup is starting Windows" and again it shut off.
    Odd!
Took out one of the mem DIMMS, reset J10 to 133/166, shut off, reset, moved the DIMM to another slot, and again, off it went and so forth.
Changed the memory to a Kingston 128Mb, again powered off.
Put an ATi Radeon 9250 in it... same old same old...
A Nvidia GeForce 2 MX replaced the ATi, beginnning to look at smashing the thing to pieces in frustration, dies at either startup or "Setup is starting Windows"
Pulled the DVD drive, still the same, did all this with the FSB set to 100Mhz, got as far as Setup is starting Windows and died.
Found a stock XP 1800+, stuck that in, followed the above and stil it would either go past BIOS screen in 133/166 or would crash at "Setup is starting Windows"
Now, why have I not sent this board back...?
I took it round a friends, who stuck a 2400+ in, some crappy old Samsung memory, his case has "El Cheapo" stamped on the PSU and the bloody thing powered up right as rain...
So we reflashed the BIOS, used the manual again to set it up for the 1800+ and I brought it back, no go...
Ye Gods, This is a sore trial indeed and I am beginning to regret being coaxed into taking this board on, playing Need For Speed Most Wanted on my Asus looks superb (the S8 Nitro is a really underrated card).
Any ideas before its "Hammer Time"..?
    Ancient One

    Hi
I only have PC2700 unfortunately being somewhat misled by Crucial that my FSB would run at 333 if I put it into the Asus.
I have rejected the GeForce because it really looks 'orrible running under the board, it may be failing in any case but the artefact seems to be there only when installed to the MSI, on the Asus, it runs perfectly and gets a reasonable score on 3dMark 2001 for what it is.   Being an MX means that even though its bigger spec than some GF3s , the memory is a lot lot older claiming to be DDR when in fact it is early SD.   The Abit Radeon 9250 is my trusty reference card as it can stoop to 2x if need be but will run in all sockets but doesn't perform as well in any way with the S8 Nitro which apperently has futureproof tech in anticipation of DX10.
The board I have, has 5 pastel green jumpers, CMOS clear at 1-2, J10 & 11 plus two down the bottom left that I can't find reference to in my manual, I suspect these are to do with the sound and USB capabilities so thought to check what these were.
The BIOS flash didn't change anything and in the BIOS I noticed that I was getting thermal readings from the temp sensor so thats out of the window as well.
FSB settings I have tried are 9 x 166, 11.5 x 133 and variations in between trying to make up 1534 or thereabouts.
I am wondering of a pinout mod to the XP socket might do the trick if I can out the FSB locks, I noticed that I cannot change the voltage Vcore to 1.75+ which is the juice that the Palomino needs, it is stuck on 1.60+ thus undervolting it somewhat, on the Asus there is a jumper for freeing the volting up, I wonder if there is anything the same on the MSI...?   I tmight be detecting the MP as a mobile and then finding it locked thus not able to process the chip as it should be eg less volts and variable rates of frequency... Hmmm
There is more though...  I found an old Duron 950, ran the system up on 100FSB and the second jumper open and vóila, went past the point of "Setup is starting Windows" and began to install on the HDD.
So it is looking increasingly like a conflict with the Athlon's of the 1800 variety...
On an aside about temps, I found that an hour on Prime95 can "cook" the artic silver and gain anything up to a 4 degree average cooler temp, I also use S2K bus disconnect software as well as them Palomino cores don't like switching themselves off into the halt states do they?
BTW Delux state that the PSU should exceed the given expectations but I wonder about this as I had to condition the output because it was quite wide in its fluctuations on the scope, I found a thing on the net on how to condition the output, so that it never drops under the expected voltage but can freely be drawn on as demand requires.   The advantage of the Peliter kit was I could run other fans directly off it leaving the 12V rails with less demand but pulse emulators are never as good as a 2700rpm rotor in keeping the board assured that a fan is spinning.   The MSI board isn't exactly abound with fan plugs...
    Thanks all again

  • K7N2-ILSR: adding S-ATA drive to existing system

    Hello everyone,
I have a system based on the K7N2-ILSR, Athlon 2500+, 2x160GB IDE Harddrives.
Now I wanted to connect a S-ATA drive (with data on it) from a friend, but I can't get it to show under Windows XP Pro. I've installed the drivers for the Promise chipset and this is shown in the device manager. I understand that you have to create a "1 disk array" before the drive can be used but I can't afford to loose the data on it. Problem.  Started out with a K6 mobo, all went well but after a week PC failed and I had to re-install Windows.  Then started getting random shutdowns, initially only when using DVD Shrink but then all of the time until Windows crashed out again!
Went through re-install and some diagnostics and eventually changed mobo for this one, K7N2.
Fresh install of Windows. (Had to phone Microsoft!!) Everything fine for two days and then......random re-boots, mainly on DVD Shrink.
Did following, Changed ram. Hard drive. Power supply up to 550w. Disconnected all drives except master.  Disconnected all drives. Re-installed windows to different drive as a test, same issue, possibly seems ok until i do all the updates and get the latest drivers in? Have tried ROM config's only 1 rom connected etc to isolate those.  Have changed all cables in case of tiny hidden cracked wire.
In other words, I have tried everthing i can think of, have basically re-built the thing and get same prob under different conditions, installations, even after 2 mobo's, only thing I didnt change yet is the chip.  My feeling is probably its a driver issue, have read the comments on the BIOS site and flashed to 7.7 so thats up to date. Am now going to re-format, re-install and run with basic drivers, see how that goes, then introduce drivers and see what makes it crash.  Will let you know how I get on if I doont throw the damn thing off of a bridge and take up Knitting instead. In the mean time if any of you can help.......PLEASE!!
PS  I Use dvd shrink as a test because it almost always causes a crash, but not always, and during the encryption process which I imagine is very processor hungry, writer doesnt cause crash as its not involved at crash stage.

:idea:ok this i what happen to me when i first install windows and like u geting update and my pc went nut more or les  :noidea:I didn,t inable the fire wall. In my case win xp so things keep going wrong if it wasn,t this it was that, still I didn,t know? so what I did was to disconmnect the internet and and once again start from scarch  format the drive I intsalled windows xp ( advaned)inable the firewall than updates and things r great, :rolleyes_anim:Give it a shot

Anyone know why? My system is running in what speed 100Mhz or 166Mhz? The BIOS told me the system is at 166Mhz! Is there any program to test FSB speed?

Windows is seeing it as a 2600, cpuz is seeing it at 166mhz which equates to a 333. You don't have any problems, all is well!
