K7N2-L Questions

I am planning on buying this board. Does it outperform the kt400 chipsets? Also how is the overclocking capabilities on this board??
all feed back is appreciated

Here is a good article comparing the different athlon xp chipsets.  you will see the nforce2 is well ahead.
by the way, it will be one of my next purchases.

  • Labtech: K7N2 Delta2 Question?

    Hi labtech,
I d/l the manual, and wondering if some of the recent booting/posting problems here have been caused by the CPU Interface set to Optimal instead of Aggressive, the latter opening up more FSB opportunities? As well, some may not have set CPU voltage high enough for their FSB wishes. Just some guesses.

Hi Xroyal. For best results with my K7N2 Delta2 Platinum I use manual settings and set cpu interface to aggressive when running my Barton XP2500+ at 200Mhz FSB (400Mhz DDR). The settings I use are as follows:-
    High Performance Mode:Manual
    Dynamic Overclocking:Disabled
CPU Voltage:1.7V (the default is 1.65V)
    Memory Voltage:2.7V (auto)
    AGP Voltage:1.5V
    Adjust CPU Frequency: 200Mhz
    Adjust CPU Ratio:CPU Default
    CPU Interface:Aggressive
    Adjust DRAM Frequency:Auto
Memory Timings:Manual-11,2,2,2.5 (equivalent to 8,2,2,2 if you have CAS 2.0 memory)
    Adjust AGP Frequency:Default
Using the above settings with the B30 bios (I found the B40 bios unstable with my hardware) produce a memory speed of 1507Mb/sec according to a Memtest 86+ v 1.25 boot disk. This is equivalent to a DDR speed of 3000+Mb/sec which is where it should be for a Nforce2 Ultra400 motherboard with my hardware at 200Mhz FSB (400Mhz DDR) with dual channel enabled and cpu interface on aggressive. An Abit NF7-S revision 2.0 is 1511Mb/sec with the latest bios by way of comparison with the same settings. If CPU interface is disabled or set to optimal the score drops to just over 1400Mb/sec. The 3D Mark01 score with my Asus 9600XT with cpu interface on aggressive is 13467 with CATS 4.10. If the cpu interface is disabled or on optimal the score drops to 13124. You can still use Core Cell to overclock or to reduce overclocking within Windows using manual settings if you wish. Finally if you want to overclock this board I recommend checking under the north bridge heat sink to make sure thermal compound is present in sufficient quantity. Mine had only a tiny drop under there. I also fitted a heat sink on the south bridge as this can get very hot under load.

  • MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR Questions & RAID Promise FastTrak Controller Issue

I have recently rebuilt my system replacing the MSI KT3 with an MSI K7N2 Delta. I have been impressed with the features and stability of the system, however, I have some questions that I hope some of you that have more experience of this board can answer:
    1. I am using the AMD Athlon XP 2200 (and all the other components including the Lian Li case) which I was using on the KT3 board. The CPU temperature is around 45 degrees C but on the KT3 it was only 35 degrees C when idle. Any ideas ? The heatsink is definetly mounted properly. The temperature did drop by 10 degrees C when I flashed the
BIOS to fix the known CPU temperature issue but I think its still high.
    2. I do not have any serial ATA devices or anything connected to IDE3 channel and during the BIOS boot up I get the message:
"No drives attached to FastTrak Controller. Bios Not installed."
Is this correct ? Should I be getting this message ?
I would like to disable the onboard Promise Controller since it is taking up resources and it slows down the boot speed (although only slightly). The MSI website says that the onboard RAID controller can't be disabled. I think this is poor design. Does anyone know if this is going to be addressed in future BIOS releases ?
    3. Which of the USB ports are USB 2.0 and USB 1.1. I thought it was rather strange that only 2 of the 4 ports on the header actually active.
    Many thanks for your help.
    Rupesh

First off your temp is ok on that board. If you have not loaded the onboard raid driver do so and it is something you have to suffer with on the MSI board. All of your USB ports should run at USB 2.0 and you also should be able enable all of them in the bios.

  • K7N2 Delta Onboard Sound Disable Question

I have a K7N2 Delta motherboard with a MSI FX5600 256MB DDR video card.  I am currently using the onboard audio.  Ever since I first built this computer I have been having nearly every game I play on it lock up and freeze.  I am thinking that it is a sound issue that is causing this problem, so I want to install a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live.  I have several questions that I hope someone can answer as I have exhausted all avenues and still don't have any answers.  Here are my questions:
       1.  How do I disable the onboard sound?  ie  Which jumper is it and what are the
            jumper settings?
       2.  Which PCI slot is recommended for installing the sound card so that I won't
            any IRQ conflicts?
       3.  Is this actually an audio problem or is there something else wrong with this
            motherboard or video card?
This is becoming very frustrating because when the computer locks up all I can do is just reset without shutting down.  I'm becoming more and more worried that if this continues unabated I'm going to crash the hard drive and have to replace it only to have the problem persist.  I hope someone can give me specific answers to my questions.  Thank you in advance for your help.

First. Is it K7N2 Delta-L or Delta-ILSR (the one with an actual Soundstorm chip on it)? If you have the actual Soundstorm chip, use it! It will sound much better than an SBLive. Assuming you have the normal K7N2 Delta-L like I have:
    1. To disable the onboard sound, first uninstall the drivers for it, then you need to go into the BIOS by holding the Delete key while you boot up. Then find the section "Integrated Peripherals" and in that section "Onboard Devices". Press Enter and find AC97 Audio and disable it. There are no jumpers.
    2. PCI slots 1, 2 and 3 are usually not shared with other stuff like you AGP or USB ports. PCI Slot 3 is the ideal choice. 1 is usually covered by your video card fan anyway. For the SBLive, on Windows XP/2000, get the newest drivers from Creative Labs. The file is named "LiveDrvUni-Pack(ENG).exe" and it's file size is 23.3 MB (24,451,404 bytes). They have fixed the "nforce2 + gameport incompatibility".
    3. The problem may be audio related...or not. Which drivers are/were you using for your onboard audio? nvidia or Realtek? Actual Soundstorm chip or crappy software codec? It could also be video card related. Fastwrites? 8x or 4x AGP?

  • K7n2 delta-l question:)

    Hi all,
K7N2 Delta-L is a new board for me, and day by day I discover new things, some are positive, others are negative:)
Today I want to ask you about some negative aspects:
    1. When I want to set the Vcore of the CPU at 1,55V (in fact I want to set it to 1,50V, but this option is not possible in bios), after reboot, the Vcore in bios is ~ 1,61V:)
    2. The Vbat in bios show me 0,00V, but my bios settings are kept after each reboot, so I think the battery voltage cannot be zero:)
The bios is flashed with the latest version (5.4). Do you have some ideas?!?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for your replies:)
I'm new in the nForce "world", after a long time with VIA boards, and maybe that's why I came here with a lot of questions:)
I've learned that bios for nForce it's a little bit tricky with settings, but I hope this items will be fixed in the next releases.
On the other hand, I managed to have a very stable system, with a 1700+ thoroughbred b0 overclocked at 2600+ (333mhz fsb) @1,6V Vcore, in dual channel (1:1), with 2 different memory modules (Samsung PC2700 & PQI PC2700)
But still I'm curious if this MB is able to handle the "Keyboard Power On" feature (this feature is not advertised in user manual or MSI website). This feature is managed by Winbond HW monitoring chip or by nForce northbridge/southbridge chipsets?!?
I like this feature, I used it on my latest motherboards, and I cannot believe that such a new board (and coming from MSI!) is not able to handle this feature:)
    All the best!

  • K7N2-L motherboard problems, and questions!

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, but I think it is.
I have a K7N2-L motherboard that is giving me fits! I can't find this board in the data base to try and trouble shoot my issue, either.
    Here's my questions:
Problem 1) There are three empty spaces in the floppy drive connection (plug) of this motherboard. Two of the spaces are in the second row, and are side by side, and don't appear to have ever had pins installed. This may be normal. These two empty spaces (blue X's) correspond to spots that don't even have holes through the motherboard to even install any pins. However, the third missing connector pin does appear to have had a pin soldered into it (red X), but now there is no pin. Also, when I attempt to start the system, the motherboard does post and will allow you to enter the BIOS set up. However, at the same time, I get a "Floppy Drive - FAILURE" warning during this part of the start up. This indicates to me that the drive is not being detected, and it may be caused by the suspected missing pin (red X). Here is a crude visual of the floppy plug lay out in question. The green I's indicate existing pins, and the X's the missing pins. The blue X's are the ones that appear to never have had pins, but the red X appears to have had a pin, as it's soldered, but is missing. Please, note the notch at the top of this crude illustration for proper orientation of the plug. If you have any info on this, please, give me some insight as I can't find any way of referencing this problem.

    Floppy Connector Layout
Problem 2) It's possible this problem is a BIOS problem, and could be corrected with a BIOS update. However, since I don't currently have a floppy drive, I can't update the BIOS. I've set the BOOT priority in the BIOS as, 1-Floppy; 2-CD-Rom; 3-HDD0. However, the board selecting the devices in the proper order, and thus I can't get any of my drive to boot from either a CD or a Hard disc. I do know that the processor I'm using is good, as it came out of another operating system board. The processor is an AMD Duron 1800/266 FSB. Here's what is being seen with the BIOS with regards to the processor. If, in the BIOS, I set the FSB to 100MHz the processor shows as a 1200MHz processor instead of an 1800. However, when I reset the BIOS FSB to 133MHz (as it should be) the BIOS now shows the processor as a 1900+. Neither of these is correct. Any ideas as to what may be going on?
    Thanks in advance.........

    Hi
I just checked 8 motheboards that I have laying around from MSI, Asus, Intel and Biostar.  The pin location that you have marked in red does not have a pin in it.  The ones that you marked in blue do have pins in them.  If you are not the original owner, it may be that someone tried to replace a couple of broken pins and gave up.
A bios update should take care of the failure to recognize your Duron 1800.  I have provided a link where you can see the later bios revisions.

  • New K7N2 Delta2 - LSR motherboard installed - a few questions

Hi - thanks for your advice on my other threads concerning my dying K7N2 Delta2 - LSR motherboard.  I finally installed my new board over the weekend.
It's virtually identical to the old board.  The only difference I can find is that this new board has on board LAN.
The downside:  When the seller packed the board in the original box, he put the huge Thermaltake heatsink on the CPU socket.  It dented the two capacitors next to it.  He also put the manual - CD - etc. bag on top of the static bag.
Virtually every capacitor was bent when I took the motherboard out of the bag.  Naturally, I was a bit concerned.
The upside:  I went ahead with the installation anyway.  I could not get the PC to boot when the Thermaltake heatsink installed.  All I got was a high-pitch squeal.  I thought it was because of the damaged capacitors.
With nothing to lose, I installed the stock heatsink that came with the CPU.  It booted right up and is stable.  As an added bonus I did not have to reinstall XP Pro or any of my programs!
One other thing - I used Arctic Silver Ceramique and applied it exactly as stated in the directions.  I was a bit nervous about not spreading the Ceramique on the CPU.
It works great.  I am getting CPU temperatures ranging from the mid 30s C to the mid 40s C.  I never got temps in the mid-30s even with Arctic Silver.
I set the BIOS to Optimized as recommended in the manual.  I noticed the RAM voltage is set to 2.7.
Question 1 - I believe my RAM is specified to run at 2.5.  Will this increased voltage cause a problem?
Question 2 - In addition to Optimized, there's Turbo Mode, Enhanced Turbo Mode and Manual in the BIOS.  What's the difference between Turbo Mode and Enhanced Turbo mode?  There's nothing in the manual explaining this.
One other thing.  I have my new USB keyboard and old USB mouse connected to the PS/2 ports.  They work perfectly.  I can get to the BIOS using this keyboard.
    Joe

Wonkanoby, Fredrik, Henry - thanks for posting.  The motherboard I have now has an Orange PCI slot, 4 white PCI slots and a Red AGP slot that has a locking mechanism that slides toward the back of the PC tower case instead of a lever that you pull up.
If this is an OEM motherboard, it sure came with a lot of extras, such as SATA cables, a printed manual, CD with drivers, backplate and a fancy box, plus a very customizable BIOS.
    Here are 2 pix:
There's no question in my mind that this motherboard is a Retail Motherboard.  I just threw out (recycled) an MSI 6389 Gateway motherboard.  It had a Gateway BIOS screen, and the BIOS had very few adjustments.
    Joe
P.S.  The 6389 MSI motherboard had a leaking capacitor and would not boot.
P.P.S. I mentioned in an earlier post that I probably disabled the LAN in my old motherboard since I installed a 1 GB Ethernet PCI card.  The computer is old, in that the CPU and heatsink are the oldest components now.  Everything else is relatively new -

  • K7N2 Delta - 3 Burning Questions

I have a K7N2-L Delta mobo and have three important questions I hope you can answer for me:
    1. What does the AGP aperature setting in the BIOS do? Mine is currently set to 64 MB. I have a radeon 9800 pro. Should I up the aperature to 128 M?
    2. Judging from my specs below, should I load the high performance defaults from the BIOS? How much would this increase the quality of my games (Fary Cry, HL2)? What are the risks? Would you reccomend the high performance or the regular defaults?
    3. Can my mobo support SATA hard drives?
    Thanks for all your help!

The Definitive BIOS Optimization Guide by Adrian Wong @ Adrian's Rojak Pot
The above should get you going, and answer any questions you will have in the future regarding any BIOS setting. Granted some things will be in your BIOS that arent in the guide and visa versa. IF there is something you can't find in the guide, treat yourself to a Google search it's all there.
There's lot's of ideas about this, but many of them are outdated. For one, systems generally have 512-1024 MB of memory these days, so the general suggestion of a percentage of memory based on what you have, just doesn't make sense anymore. You can leave your AGP setting at 64. But you didn't tell us how much memory is on the card, 256 or 128. Myself, I've always used 64 for a 128 card and 128 for a 256. I've even played around in benchmarks and frankly, with the margin of error, I don't see any real difference worth noting. The real test is the game(s) you actually play, however, I doubt you notice much difference between the two (64-128) It all really depends also on the settings you like to play at (AA AF) and the resolutions. If you like to play at high resolution and the AA AF settings at upper levels, then a higher AGP aperture size may make a noteable difference. You'll just have to try it and see. Sometimes certain aperture settings can cure some isses in some configurations that are less stable as well (rare)
As was mentioned by Stu regarding Performance Defaults, I'd like to add that you can also gain stability problems, so, as mentioned by Frederik, try it and see. Personally I never use it. I just load the defaults and put the setting where I want them. Every BIOS can be different (behave differently) from one configuration to another, so one person might tell you, "I get XX% performance increase in games" may not be true for you and your particular hardware configuration. In this case, most of it really boils down the the RAM. If you have cheap RAM, and/or don't have the optimal timings set correctly, the high performance may cause the system to spit back at you. Finally, it's all about taking the time to find the sweetspots for your configuration, if you are so inclined.
With your current configuration, I see no need to go to SATA unless you plan on using a RAID setup. Personally I'd wait till you are ready to upgrade to the next level, A64.

  • Questions about K7N2 Delta-ILSR

I am planning to buy a K7N2 Delta-ILSR  motherboard, so I have a few questions  about it.
Firstly, I would like to know which the max FSB the motherboard can handle is. )
Secondly, which are the available multiplier numbers?
Furthermore, i would like to know if the K7N2 Delta-ILSR version has standard the MCP2-T chip. In advance I would like to know, if it supports the SoundstormTM technology
     Thanks

    madsteeve1,
    1) I have seen people running over 425Mhz.
    2) Download the manual and check the BIOS Revisions for that answer
    3) The -ILSR Boards have Soundstorm.
    Take Care,

  • MSI K7N2 Delta RAID question

    Hi guys,
Again with the stupid questions.   At least my questions are easy.
I've been dieing to hook up a couple o' SATA drives and run RAID, striping, on my MSI K7N2 Delta.  I ordered a couple 200Giger Seagate Barracuda's tonight.  Couldn't  pass up the deal even though I shouldn't have spent the $.
OK, here's my stupid question:  Can you partition a drive(s) in RAID 0?   I would like to partition like 10GB for the OS and the rest for like apps and download storage.  If I ever have to reformat the OS I only have to redo the 10GB partition.  Thanks for bearing through my stupid questions, I'm just excited to do this and can't wait to find out.

    Ok guys, thanks again.
I kinda figured it would be business as usual, but I wasn't sure.
I am very curious about speed performance.  I'm not sure it would be worth it from what I've read about RAID 0.  Apparently it will be good for like video editing operations which I will be doing a little bit of for my web site.  I will find out for myself though, and I do need more room.  So, regardless the space is needed and I wouldn't mind a bit more performance.
I have the RAID drivers on floppy disk that came with the mobo.  I think I'm all set except for drives that will arrive this week some time.

  • K7N2 Delta2 - LSR RAM Question

Hi - I have a K7N2 Delta2 - LSR motherboard with two sticks of 512 MB PC3200 400 MHz RAM.  I have an opportunity to pick up two 1 GB sticks of Patriot memory at a reasonable price.
Here are the specs on the memory:
    http://www.patriotmemory.com/products/specs/pdc2g3200elk.pdf
Question 1:  Does anyone know if this is high or low density RAM?
Question 2 - Will high density RAM work on my motherboard?
    Thanks
    Joe

Bidding on used RAM on eBay is not a very good idea. I would suggest something from here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010170147%201052407862%201052308477&name=2GB%20%282%20x%201GB%29 I use PNY Optima and A-DATA RAM with no problems from either brand.

  • 1 gig Mushkin and K7N2 question

There is a large retailer here that is selling PC3200 Mushkin High Performance Level II matched 512 sticks for $250.00. This sounds like a great deal, but I want to know if anyone has used these in the K7N2. I noticed that there more than a few that use a gig of PC2700 Mushkin and would I be wrong in assuming the PC3200 would work the same?

I know of no reason why it should not.
Besides if it doesn't Mushkin will make it right somehow.
Matched pairs have been tested in Dual Channel Mode.
    Go for it!

  • K7N2 Delta2 : mbprobe question and tweakui question

    two questions:
    1) I installed temp monitor drivers for mbprobe using the winbond drivers that go with the software. the only temp i am able to read or put out is the mobo temp, my question is if there was something i overlooked on the mobo drivers cd that came with it, or do i need a diff driver than the one i installed?
    2) TweakUI question, i dunno if this is releated to the mobo or not, but i just came from a rev 1.03 asus a7n8x-dlx mobo and this never worked correctly with it either, i've reinstalled windows on several occations and never had this work correctly, the problem that i'm having is that under the auto-logon check-box, it unchecks itself after every windows boot, is there a setting i need to change so that it stays checked? i dunno what i'm doing wrong, all the other settings in tweakui remain even after reboots, so i couldn't figure out i was doing wrong
thanks in advance for any help you can give me

Never used mbprobe.  Google speedfan.  Discussion here.
Auto logon is not a mobo issue.  Try this instead of the auto logon in tweakui.
