K7N2 nightmare

hi all,
new here, but long time MSI user. i just got a new K7N2 delta2 lsr board, and a new xp2400 35watt mobile to go with it. i have been having a nightmare tring to get this thing to work! i cant get anywhere with the auto clocking DOT set to disabled.i want to overclock myself. but i cant get over a 200 fsb no matter what i do. i am not new to overclocking, but i cant figure out whats up with this board. i have a new 500 watt 34 amp powersupply and all the rails read great, the temps are good, i have pumped 2 volts to the cpu and 3 to the mem, thats all i feel comfortable with. i have been getting crashes when i do get into win xp pro. if i leave the DOT set to private i can get in at 12.5x200 and its very stable. i would rather get in at like 11.5x210, as its actualy faster. i had the same mem and cpu on another sys today and hit a 222 fsb, so i know its not those parts. i read about the b.30 bios, but dose it support the 512 of L2 on the cpu?
i also dont know anything about the \f "trick" i keep hearing about. right now i have the b.50 bios.
it came with the b.40.
everything works on this board and i do like it, but is there a way around the bios issues?
thanks for any help, i will probably go to the overclocking forum now and see what i can find out there. also, has anyone come up with a custom or modded bios for this board?
bri

Hi Brian,
I also have K7N2-Delta2-LSR with XP-M 2500+ (45 Watt, 1.45v). Running at 12x200 and 1.65v (2.4 GHz) was not a problem without overcolocking the memory. Reading your message, if you have 12x200 stable but 11.5x210 unstable, I think, the problem is your memory. Anyway, here is what I did in my case.
- First, made sure I have proper CPU cooling. Then, in the BIOS, set the Vcore to 1.65v for starting (by the way, Vcore=2.0v is too high, I would not exceed 1.75, at most 1.8v, without special cooling)
- Set FSB to 200 and multiplier to 11 for starting, I would assume XP-M 2400+ could easily go upto 2200 MHz without special effort. You can increase multiplier to 12 after stabilizing the initial setup.
- Set DDR RAM timings and voltage to default values and disable DOT. (my BIOS was also B.4 by default) (Again, RAM voltage of 3.0v is too high, it may cause instability)
I use 1:1 FSB:RAM ratio at 200 FSB and do not overcolock the memory since I only have the standard PC3200 Crucial memory. After initial stage, I only increased the multiplier to 12x and left the system as it is at that point since it was completely stable and cool.
Since Athlon XP-M's are unlocked, I did not do any modifications on the CPU. The only problem is that the BIOS reports my CPU as "unknown CPU type" which is a completely cosmetic problem.
Good luck !
Motherboard: K7N2-Delta2-LSR (BIOS upgraded to B.5)
CPU: Athlon XP-M 2500+ running at 2.4 GHz (12x200, 1.65v)
Memory: Crucial PC3200 512 MB single stick (2.7v, default timings, 3,3,3,8)

  • K7N2 powerdown nightmare

This is a long one, so I am grateful, in advance to anyone with the patience to read it.
I have recently upgraded to a K7N2-L mobo and am having an absolute nightmare with random power downs. It seems to be OK in Windows and DVD playback but any 3D aps kill my machine after about 10 minutes.
I had a similar poblem with an Asus A7V8X that always hanged after about 30 seconds, so I changed to a mobo with an Nvidia2 chipset.
Now I get a little extra time but it still chews. My full system spec is as fllows:
    Athlon WP 2200+
    MSI K7N2-L
    512M Corsair 3200 XPS
    Hercules Prophet 9700Pro
    Maxtor 60Gb ATA 133
    Sonic Fury
    Windows Xp Pro-SP1
I have instaled all the most recent drivers; hercules, nvidia and video logic and BIOS. (all as of 2/3/03)
I thought that it was the Radeon to begin with( on the Asua  mobo) but it tested fine for the whole of 3Dmark on a Gigabyte Mobo. I know about the compatability problems that have arisen with the Radeon 9700/9500 so I changed to an Nvidia chipset, it didn't work.
Here is a list of all the things that have failed and some other misc. info.

I have tried all the suggestions provided by Hercules, which amount to turning all VGA related BIOS options off, reduciong AGP speed to 4X and increasing AGP voltage to 1.6.
I have tried under clocking the VGA card, the processor and the RAM.( And each individualy).
I have tried every combination of RAM and AGP volts.
I have tried many variations of BIOS settings including those suggested by ATI and Hercules.
My only clue is that underclocking - either the processor or the VGA card provides a precious extra 2 or 3 minutes of 3D time! Oh the joy.
All the bits are newish, in the last 3 months. The system worked fine with a Radeon 64M DDR, but that was back with the Asus.
Does any one have any ideas? Should I demand a more lenghty test of the 3D card? Should I become mad at MSI for any incompatability issues( they have tested the Radeon 9700PRO)? Should I become very mad at the injustice of having a computer that refuses to work despite weeks of tinkering?
    Please help me.
    Cheers.

I never manually installed the mac-adress, but the mac-adress showed up anyway when I checked ipconfig/all in cmd. I called customer support to check my internet connection and they couldn't get any connection with my LAN through the mac-adress. Later I put in a pci-network card and it worked super. But the built-in LAN did not work.
I would try the memtest if I could but the computer now shuts down after about 30 seconds, leaving little time to do anything. It even shuts down in bios so it seems to be a hardware-problem. My PSU is brand new, True Power 480W so that shouldn't be a problem. I first connected my mainboard with my old 350W PSU but it broke down after a couple of minutes (is that normal with a 350W-PSU?). That's why I bought the 480 W. My CPU-cooler is approved for AMD XP 2600 in silent mode and my CPU is an AMD XP 2200. Even though I have the CPU-fan on max speed the system shuts down. I checked the temp (50-55C) with AMD, they say their processors run at up to 90 C! Could it be that my mainboard is to temperature-sensitive? Or maybe it's the memory, either way I've packed down everything I bought and I'll send it to the store as soon as I get their confirmation. I just want to get rid of it now, it's caused me enough worry allready. I've spent two weeks trying to figure out what was wrong and now I want to go on with my life ;-)

  • Killed My K7N2

Well I was overclocking my bros rig, an xp 2500+ to 200 fsb, set the rest on high performance mode and put the voltage to 1.7v I think. Stock is 1.65v. I was running Prime95 on torture test for 10 - 15 mins and cpu was at 51-54C I went to toilet and straight after I had, my bro said it shut down and smelt burning. It’s only a really old shitty 300W PSU with 10A on the 12V and pc alert said it was like 11.40 I think on the 12V and like well under on the 3.3v. It won't boot but the cpu fan and case fan leds flash for a second that’s all it does when you try to turn it on. Then you have to turn power off and on to get them to flash again when you try and boot. And yes I cleared the cmos already.
Is it the PSU or is it my worse nightmare - Mobo or CPU. It can't be cpu, its really between mobo and PSU, I have my money on PSU what you guys think? I try a new 500W cheaply I have.

Make a sig listing everything in the system.  11.4 volts on the 12volt rail is on the low side.  Also list the specs for the power supply.  3.3v-5v-12v amperages.  That magma power supply may cause you problems.  Forget about the watts that it supposedly produces, that means nothing.  It is the amps per rail that counts.
I know the watts mean nothing but the Amps on the 12v rail are like 17 or 19 one of the three and it’s not a very demanding system. I am not sure if PC Alert (after all it is made by MSI) is reading the voltages wrong on the 12v, I will try Speedfan later
    The Gear will be
Amd 2500 XP, overclocked to 2.2-2.6MHz I am hoping
Ati 9600 SE 128 modded and overclocked to max
    MSI K7N2
1 GB of crucial DDR 400(I think) rams which I will just most probably set to high performance
Just a standard IDE drive and Floppy and dual layer DVD drive.
And the cpu coolers not too bad, I can't put any AS5 on it as I will have to drop out the PSU to get it off and I can't be bothered with that. It is about 35-40C on prime95 max heat torture test at stock speeds.
Are there any good bios for overclocking/benchs for this board then chaps?

  • K7N2 Delta lock ups

    Hi there,
I've got a MSI k7N2 Delta sitting in my PC atm. But with a nasty problem. I have to keep the cpu sitting in it (AMD Barton 3000) underclocked for me to use my PC for more then 40 mins at a time. After that time, it just freezes, and the sound card (not system speaker) emits a nasty high pitched sound. Using a more intensive game, i.e. planetside speeds up the process, somethimes running for a mere 5 mins. To use the pc atm, the cpu is clocked at 1.4Ghz, instead of the over 2ghz it should be at.
    Any suggestions anyone?
    Specs:
    K7N2 Delta
    AMD Barton 3000+
512Mb Kingston DDR (on compatibilty list)
    ATI Radeon 7500
    SB! 128
    Antec 400Watt PSU

ok, after some more testing (man i love CS  ) it still locks up, but it took longer initially. It now just freezes, with no beeeep from the sound card. It may be temperature related though, as after the intial freeze, it will now only take a few minutes before it does it again. Straight after it freezes I'm getting temperature of around 50 on all monitors.
Ill whip out that TV card and give it a whirl now
p.s. case fans, i think one is in the wrong way, is the spinny side supposed to facing in the case, or out the case? cheers

  • External hard drive nightmare

Hi all, first time posting but this site has helped me several times in the past so thank you for that,
Having an absolute nightmare with an external drive. I've got a Hitachi Touro Pro 4TB USB 3.0 that recently had some trouble with the power supply, over the last couple days the hard drive wouldn't power on if the power cable was hanging the wrong way off of the plug (if that makes sense), haven't had time to get a new power supply so have been dealing with it the last couple of days until I can get a new one.
Suddenly my hard drive stopped showing up in Finder, I checked Disk Utility and it's still there. The actual hard drive model and, stemming down from it, "EYES DRIVE" (which is what I named the drive) are both still there, but the EYES DRIVE is greyed out. I've tried verify disk which lead to a warning saying it needed repairing, but when I try to repair it I'm told the disk cannot be repaired and to backup any files and restore the drive. It also won't let me mount from that menu.
I've tried booting up to the Disk Utility menu and repairing from there to no avail, also tried DiskWarrior which tells me there's a hardware issue with the drive, I get the error "Directory cannot be rebuilt due to disk hardware failure (-36 2738)". I'm currently doing a surface scan on it with TechTool Pro, but it's a 4TB drive and this is proving to be taking a very long time. No bad blocks encountered so far but I'm only 15,000,000 blocks into a 976,000,000 block hard drive.
What are my options here? The data on the drive is extremely valuable and I cannot really afford to lose it. Is it a good sign that the drive name still shows up in Disk Utility or am I still in big trouble?
Also, I realise I should have multiple backups of all of my stuff, but this drive originally started off as a backup drive that I would keep safe and not touch except for backups, until I got a new retina MacBook Pro and the lack of space on it (256GB) forced me to use it as storage as well as Time Machine backups. There's about 5 years of hard work on it, I'm absolutely kicking myself that I didn't have it backed up elsewhere.
Thank you for any responses and let me know if you need any more info, I'm really freaking out here!

Managed to find a solution of sorts for anyone suffering from the same problem,
It turns out I was unable to access the drive at all because of my MacBook trying to fix the drive before letting me use it, I stopped this by killing the process "fsck_hfs" in activity monitor, an error came up saying I was unable to repair the drive but I was then able to mount the drive as read only and all of my data was still there, ready to be copied onto another drive.
I tried DiskWarrior immediately after this to try and repair the drive but it put me back to square one (with the drive not showing up and the "fsck_hfs" process running again), so it looks like the hard drive itself is a lost cause, but the data is saveable. I don't think I've ever been this relieved in my life, hope this helps someone else!

  • IDE BLOCK ACESS in the MS-6570 K7N2-L (nFORCE 2)

I possess a K7N2-L with chipset nFORCE 2 and vi something in software SANDRA 2004 that it did not please me very. I verified exactly that the access to the hard disk is carried through in 16bits instead of 32bits, with qualified IDE BLOCK. It would like that they verified this together anomaly with the engineering staff and made possible one firmware correcting the problem, therefore will be truth I am not having access the record in its total speed and performance. What nothing it pleases me.
Another curious factor is that raríssimas the times that I bind the computer and this does not give to life signal, forcing me to press it reset or to power to return to its normal state. Stranger not? Somebody could indicate me where to lower bios beta for MSI K7N2-L FSB333?    I am consuming fidiciary office to the products of the MSI has 3 years and I can say that they are of congratulations for the quality that is spotless in its products. For this I am here for not leaving this quality to leave the standard that as much I admire in this company.
Where 3 for Athlon 64 754 bolts are the plates mothers with nFORCE?  They pardon me for the horrible English!
    Been thankful
Alguém poderia me indicar onde baixar bios beta para a MSI K7N2-L FSB333???

  • Have others experienced a nightmare in signing up for 3 computers on Creative Cloud?

Have others experienced a ridiculous nightmare, wanting to register 3 computers for Creative Cloud? I signed up for TWO subscriptions.  Spoke to supporton the phone to do this.  Got all signed up on my Adobe ID.... and have been charged for the second month now.
I only just realized that I couldn't use Photoshop on my laptop, because I have "exceeded my limit" of reigstered devices.  ON the phone with support, obviously in India, I spun my wheels, and spent an inordinate amount fo time, trying to figure out how to fix the issue... with the agent we couldn't even figure out how to FIND my two serial numbers on the computers, to determine which computer was registered with which computer.
After more than an hour of this, and the agent consulting his senior manager, he comes back on the line and informs me that I cannot register two subscriptions on one Adobe ID and email!!!
Then I insist on speaking with the manager.  He tells me the same.  I say why then did they even ACCEPT my two subscriptions on my ONE Adobe ID and email??  When I go to MY ADOBE account, it clearly shows the two orders, and the two subscriptions... and on my singel Adobe ID and email.
    This is clearly ridiculous.
The manager has now asked me for 48 hours, for him to "discover who gave me the misinformation and when".  I told him that that is their internal issue.  I could care less about WHO and WHEN.  I only care about this issue being resolved, and as quickly as possible.  I will also insist on a refudn of the two months charged for a second subscription that was fraudulently accepted.
Has anyone else experienced this story, wanting to register for 3 computers (or more)?  What was your coutcome?
    Adobe needs to fix this.

Just wondering why you didn't take the Creative Cloud for Teams route, rather than take out two subscriptions.  But do you the Application Manager installed on each machine?  If so, that should show who is signed in on each computer.  It sounds like the same user is signed on with all three computers, in which case sign out from the one with out your apps installed on, and sign in again using the other subscription ID.
If this proves problematic, uninstall the Application manager from the third machine, and sign in on the Adobe CC site with the new ID and start from scratch.
But surely it would be better to sort out the mess you are in, and swap your two subscriptions for a 'Team Subscription'.   Go ask in the Creatice Cloud Forum, and make it clear in the thread subject window that you need help from an Adobe staff member.  We frequently see Adobe staff step in on these forums, to fix complicated issues.

  • Someone plz help me with my k7n2 delta-ilsr

    Hey everyone,
I just put my sytem togother and ran into a problem.  I got the system to boot up just fine.  It was not until I tried installing windows xp proffesional that  I ran into problems.  The installation process runs pretty smoothly, until the computer reboots to run windows for the first time.  After it reboots the windows logo appears and the after 2 seconds or so, a blue screen appears saying that windows was shut down to prevent any damage to my computer.  I have never encountered this problem before when I built other systems.  The screen suggests that I should check my HDD's for viruses or check to see if they are configured correctly.  The HDD's are SATA and I have them set up in RAID 0 mode and yeah I installed the RAID drivers during the installation process.  Thinking that I had made mistake setting up the SATA drives, tried installing windows using a regular IDE hard drive and it gave the same message.  I am stumped anybody have any ideas of what I might be doing wrong?  Any help would be appreciated .  My system specs are below.

Memory that comes with timing of 5 2 2 2 or 6 2 2 2 or usally winbond BH-5 memory chips. Ones with 5 3 2 2 or CH-5 winbond chips. The BH-5 chips overclock a little better than the CH-5. (Muskin uses BH-5 winbond in there black ram)
Winbond is no longer making BH-5 chips but is going to make a limited run of them as demend is high for them.
The first number shown here is the Traz and it controls the flush timing bench testing is showing that a higher number of 9, 10 or 11 or getting better bench results than the 6 or 5. Thats with Dual Channel memory.
The timing you show probly should be something  like 8 3 3 3 or 8 3 3 2.5 unless it is there faster Dual channel ram.
The timing numbers can also appear like this 2 2 2 5 the high number is the Traz either way.
Look on your memory manufactor web site for the timing that if should run at also look at the voltage as this can make a big differance.

  • HELP me with my K7N2 delta ilsr

Can anyone help me with this problem. I have just upgraded to MSI's K7N2 delta ilsr motherboard. Its all working quite well apart from the fact that the pc wont start up from cold....at all.
When I start the pc from an off state, it runs up the fans and drives, but does not post.
The diagnostic led pannel on the back of the pc shows that the cpu is faulty or not installed correctly.
If I then press the reset button, the pc posts, and boots up just fine.
It does this EVERY time I start up.
I have tried re installing the cpu, which is an XP 2800+ 333 barton, but to no avail.
I have asked a few questions on other forums, but I cant solve it.
These are the suggestions so far.
    1. the psu (I have a Tsunami 400 atx psu) could not be giving out enough power on initial startup, but once the pc is running, it has enough to boot the pc from a reset.
    2. The mobo or the bios could be at fault. I have not flashed the bios, or upgraded it in any way from original, so is there an issue with the original bios on these boards, and 2800 barton chips??? Could it be a mobo fault? The pc runs fine once the machine is booted.? how do I test it?
    3. The cpu could be faulty? but would this not stop it running fuull stop?
    4. my ram. I have a single stick of OCZ 512mb pc3200 ddr, which I was told would make the pc fly. Not shure on that statement, but is this ram compatible?? could this be the problem?
Im fairly new to the upgrade side of things, and I need some help with this one.
Also, Id be really greatfull if some one could talk me through flashing my bios to the latest version, as the thought of doing this narks me a bit...I dont want to mess it up and get a dead pc...

    Hi,
Your problem is not the same, SiliconMan is trying to connect with a dial-up modem not LAN. Your problem sounds like it may be configuration, do a search on this post, I'm sure you will find people with onboard LAN troubles. It's hard to troubleshoot though since you didn't provide any info about your computer. Good Luck

  • Strange phantom restarts on MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR

Just wanted to see if I could get opinions on this. My MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR mobo runs real nice now, but still, on occasion, very rare and intermittently, it will just restart. Not likely a heat issue, as the temps are nice and low. Also, not just happenning when I'm playing a game or anything strenuous. Did it once while checking email, once during install of an MS Office program, and once during a game. Could it be my old Gforce 2 MX 200 video card, as the picture sometimes gets wavy (like fine waves on an ocean), and the old computer it was in did similar things, or is it common with this mobo.
    MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR
    Athlon XP 2500+ Barton
1026 MB Kingston DDR RAM (2x512 Dual)
    Gforce 2 MX 200 AGP 4x
    WD 60 GB 7200 RPM

I had errors on test 4 not 5 with Winbond 2-512 Dual Channel called Hardcore Cooling and they said that getting errors with memtest86 may not mean that the ram is defective, it may not be compatible with the memory comtrol and they had me RMA it back. I also was not able to run the ram stable at there advertized rate of 6 2 2 2 it was only stable at 8 3 3 2.5
I replaced it with OCZ after talking to there Tech support people about compatiblety problems with the Nvidia chipset. Sense I installed the OCZ I only had one ram reboot and when I checked I was running the voltage at 2.5 and OCZ said that I should be running at 2.6. They also said that I could run it up to 2.8 with no worry.
Look on manufactor web site to see what ram timing yours should be running at and what voltage, Auto setting in Bios is not always the best setting.
If it still not stable at manufactor spec than I'd talk to who ever you bought it from about replacing it or refund and buy something thats on the Nvidia compatible list.
Most ram manufactors have a list of motherboards that there ram will work on but sometimes the newer boards like K7N2 or not listed yet as still working that out.

    >power on
    >no video
    >no beeps
    >after checking hard nothing happens...

....d-bracket from MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR is 1,3,4 red and 2 green. Which is according the the manual "Memory Detection Test"-if the memory module is damaged or not installed properly.

  • Data corruption on MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR

    Hi all,
Just got my new MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR up and running.
Got some issues with the memory running at 200mhz while the Barton core of my Athlon Xp 2600+ was running 166mhz, this had to be 1:1 (thx forum  )
While running the default bios settings with cpu/mem at 166/166 fsb everything is stable as hell. I have been running Prime95 for 2 days now and using the system for dvd ripping/encoding, UT2004 gaming etc.
Then the overclocking began   I'm using the standard AMD cooler that came with my boxed Xp2600+ so I didn't expect an FSB of 200mhz.
I stopped at an FSB of 190mhz...been crunching Prime95 for 18 hours now and again very stable.
Now comes the problem : Sometimes I get crc errors when installing a game or decrypting a dvd!! But how can this be? Prime95 is stable at this 190fsb overclock.
When using an FSB of 166mhz no data corruption or crc errors.
What can this be? It's not the cables because they're all the same as in my old setup which was running (ahum...walking) stable. PCI/AGP speeds are locked when overclocking...
Only thing I can think of is the power supply. I've read in a warning post from Bas that the Q-Tec 550w psu I have is crap. So my guess is PSU, but maybe it's something else I'm forgetting...Any suggestions??
The stupid thing is when I'm not overclocking I don't have the data corruption problems, but I'm still using the same crappy Q-Tec 550w PSU.
    Help!
    gr,
    Remco

Hmmm, that's curious. On the MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR product page Kingston memory is recommended
Ok, did a Memtest86 v1.11 pass at cpu/dimm 166/166 - no problems whatsoever. I think using Prime95 would have revealed memory problems...but will do another pass with cpu/dimm at 190/190.
Can overclocking affect the Promise Raid Controller?? It should be locked like the PCI/AGP but who knows...
Well, I still have to replace my PSU but I'm not 100% sure that this is the problem. What PSU would you recommend? ...and I'm also thinking about replacing the standard CPU cooler, any advice is welcome

  • PNY and MSI K7N2 Delta - ILSR

Looking into buying the K7N2 Delta-ILSR...I have heard that it is a awesome overclocker, and a very fast board.  Has anyone had experience with using...
PNY Optima PC2700 DDR memory on it?  It is double sided memory, with Hynix chips.  Hynix chips are listed on MSI's Memory Compatibility PDF...but i wanted to know if anyone has used it before?  Thanks

Its not tehre, but it does use Hynix chips, which IS supported.  I also have read in this forum that people have got my exact memory to work flawlessly on the board i want.  Thanks anyway!
