K7N2G-ILSR overclocking problems

I am experiencing some strange problems.  First my system:
K7N2G-ILSR using onboard video
Athlon XP 1700+ Thoroughbred A, factory unlocked
2x512MB Corsair XMS PC2700CL2 memory
Debian Linux, 2.4.21-pre4-ac6 kernel
350W Enermax PSU
173MHz FSB, 10x multiplyer, 1733MHz CPU 1:1 FSB/CPU
1.65V CPU Voltage
1.2 BIOS
This system works rock stable, no crashes, no problems when it is running.  But if I turn the power off, it no longer posts, if I remember correctly, the bottom two leds are on.  It does not beep, no video nothing.
There is a procedure I can always use to bring the system back up, but it is a bit tedious:
1. Set the safe mode jumber
2. power on, the machine starts non-stop high/low beeps, no video
3. Press reset: the board boots up, go to BIOS setup, set the FSB to 133MHz and save
4. power off, reset the safe mode jumper
5. Power on, again the machine starts with high/low beeps
6. Reset: the machine comes up, enter the BIOS, set FSB back to 173MHz
7. Reboot, enjoy!
It always works, but it is a hassle.  Not too bad, since the machine is on 24/7 so I only have to do this is there is a power outage of when I change some hardware, but it is very inconvinient.
The other strange thing is that I cannot set the DDR voltage to 2.7V.  I can select it in the BIOS, save it, but after reboot it is back to 2.6V

I have tried that, removed my HD and my TV Tuner card, but it did not help.  But I have discovered something new: if I turn off the machine only using the ATX power switch and do not turn off the PSU switch, the board comes back on fine.  I also have a simplified procedure to revive the board after a power off:
1. Set the safe mode jumper
2. Power on, wait for high/low beeps
3. Reset and wait for POST
4. Turn off using the ATX Power switch
5. Reset the safe mode jumper while the main PSU power is still on
6. Turn on and boot
Note that I did not have to tweak the BIOS as before.
Also did anyone else had trouble setting the DDR voltage to 2.7V? I can set it in the BIOS, but it is back to 2.6V after reboot.

  • K7N2G-ILSR / RAM Problem

    Hello,
I’m hoping some one can help me with a problem I have on a recently purchased MSI K7N2G-ILSR motherboard. During certain games and other OS operations I am receiving General Protection Faults and being ‘bombed’ to the desktop or sometimes BSOD's. My current specifications are as follows:
    AMD Athlon XP 2600
    MSI K7N2G-ILSR
3 HD’s 2 onboard IDE and one on the RAID (80GB maxtor,40 GB Western Dig and 120GB Seagate)
    1GB RAM (1x512 PC2700 Seitec & 1x512 Hynex PC 2700)
    Radeon 9600 PRO (Gigabyte)
It appears that the problem I have is memory related running the 2 modules in slots 1 & 3 Dual Rate causes the above problems. I have also tried both modules in slots 1 & 2 (single rate) and the same problems persist.  Removing the module from slot3 (i.e. running on 1 x 512 modules in slot 1) and I have no re-occurrence of these issues
Please can you let me know if these modules are supported on your motherboard and if there are any recommended BIOS settings for best performance / stability?
    I am seriously considering purchasing some PC2700 Crucial Ram (DDR PC2700 • CL=2.5 • Unbuffered • Non-parity • 6ns • 2.5V • 64Meg x 64 ) to try and sort my problems only I have read mixed reports on forums regarding MSI mobo's and crucial RAM.  ?(
    Hope some one can help.
    Kind Rgds,

If my problem persists after this I will be truly gutted, also I believe running your RAM in slots 2 & 3 isn't utilising the 128 bit dual ddr functions of the board afaik.
Surely some one out there is running 2 x 512MB pc2700 in slots 1 & 3 WITHOUT any problems ?!?!?
    Hi,
Slots 1&3 or 2&3 both operate in dual channel, it's 1&2 that don't. Yes I am running 2X512 pc2700 in slots 1&3 without any problems, but it's Mushkin RAM.

  • K7n2G-ILSR, Mouse problems

I have been having a lot of issues with my mouse since I got my K7N2G-ILSR MOBO. If I use the PS/2 connection; if I have to reboot after installing a program or something the mouse no longer works and I have to reboot again and it works fine. That is the task everytime I have to reboot.
I thought maybe there was a grounding problem with my mose connector or my PS/2 connection on my MOBO, so I went out and purchased a IBM optical mouse. Problems still persist although they are different ones now. The IBM mouse is USB, if I connect it to any of the USB connections its almost like it doesn't have enough power to run my mouse. The mouse's scroll button lights up blue and when I plug it into any of the USB ports I can see it flash a couple of times, but the light is very dim and then it just goes out and my mouse doesn't work at all. Tried doing the restart process and nothing happens at all. I tried all 4 USB inputs on the MOBO itself and even installed the USB 2 S-Bracket that came with it and the same problem happens in each one.
I just wonder if I should try another mouse like an intellimouse or are my connections on my MOBO just bad or something.
Any help would be very appreciated.
         Thank you all,

The problem is with the board, I've had 2 of these boards, and both of them had a problem with the mouse.
If you get a keyboard and mouse make sure they are both USB, or BOTH PS/2. If you choose the PS/2 option then make sure the keyboard, and mouse don't have any extra features.
It's odd, some keyboards and mice work fine, while others mess the whole computer up.

  • K7N2G ILSR POST Problems

Built my computer tonight, fitted Crucial 333MHz 256MB memory, XP2200 with Zalman Flower, big fan with speed control (set to max), old IBM ATA66 HDD into 400W PSU, which came with the case.
Clears the BIOS with the jumper, enured 133MHz FSB jumpers were in place and fired her up.  No video, one 1 second beep every 4 seconds or so, and the D-LED shows it hung on memory detection test. I switched off and changed the DIMM to bank 2 (from 1) and retried...same.  Changed to bank 3 and it booted! Whent straight into bios and set profile to normal, looked at CPU fan speed (2000rpm)and power supply voltages (0.2V low on +-12V and 5V but stable), saved and exited.  Same problem!  Switched off and back on and the computer boots!  The computer cannot warm reboot and about 60% of the time cannot cold boot.  I have no OS on the HDD yet. Each time the D-LED gives the same error.
Anyone with a similar experience or an idea I can try out???

I decided to shell out on some Corair TWINX memory 512-2700LLPT for £115, which by the way cost more than the motherboard did! Clipped it in and BINGO, it worked!  Tried rebooting warm, and it works fine too.  Upped the FSB to 133MHZ and it works fine! I have not had any serious platime on it yet but upto now the memory has solved the problem...apart from the FDD not working (XP sees it but light is always on and it does not work).
Will now load up the driver (from the Nvidia site) and see if it all works as it should.
I'm running BIOS V1.2.  What benefits will I get updating it to 1.3??

Anyone out there buying this board?  Don't even think about using Ram with a latency of more than 2.  You are taking a gamble and your time is worth more than any potential cost saving!

  • K7N2G-ILSR crashing problems

I've been having problem with my system for a while now. I bought it in last May, and for the first two months everything was running fine. Then out of nowhere, it started crashing. The computer will simply reboot, just as if I'd pressed on the reset switch. Sometimes it will give me a blue screen, usually one that says MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION with this error code 0x000009. This usually happens when I try to play a game or when I run highly demanding applications. Sometimes the game only crash to Windows, but most of the time I get a reboot or a blue screen.
At first, I suspected that Windows was the problem, so I reinstalled it. It didn't solve the problem. Then as I looked up my error code in the microsoft knowledge base, I found out that my problem could be caused by deffective memory. I tried reconfiguring my sticks in every possible way. This seem to have an effect on the frequency that my computer was crashing, or how long it would last before it crashed, but it would eventually crash in every scenario.
Last weekend, I tested a Kingston Hyper X module in the system and it would still crash. I know there have been issues with Kingston RAM, but I'm not sure if that's the problem. If that is the case, who is at fault, the RAM or the motherboard? Any input will be appreciated...

I had the same exact errors except that I never got the computer running properly. There was always some problem. I also started building in May, what a coincidence. Anyway, I also had 2 sticks of Kingston Valueram 512MB. Heres what I did. Try only one stick in slot 1. You may still have problems. Check to see if your motherboard bios is the most recent version. If not, update it.  Once I did this, my computer ran pretty well, the errors seemed to stop (I only tested it for a little while.) When I tried to put the second stick in slot 3 all the errors came back. If you search this forum you'll find a lot of discussion about it. I talked to Kingston and they gave me a couple of different responses but the their bottom line was that there is a problem with Kingston Ram and the K7N2. Thats the same impression I get when looking in the forum.  A lot of people in the forum suggested Mushkin Black.  I ordered 2 sticks of Mushkin Black 256 MB last week. Its a little more expensive but I've never had a problem since. Bottom line, try a bios update, maybe check the dram voltage. If you still get problems you may need to replace the Ram. Good luck.

  • K7N2G-ILSR Audio Problems

For some reason I cannot get the Dolby Digital Encoding or even Digital Out working. I've got my system connected to a Dolby receiver with a coaxial cable, but i get no output when I select digital. The speaker output levels show that audio is playing, but I dont hear any of it. My receiver works fine if I connect it to an Audigy or a DVD player. I'm using Winxp with all the latest audio drivers. Any help would be great. Thanks

Reinstall them according to the link I provided in my last post...

  • USB 2.0 problem (K7N2G-ILSR and HP PSC 2210)

I'm using a K7N2G-ILSR mainboard in combination with a HP PSC 2210 all-in-one printer. The printer sometimes stops printing and produces an error. The print can not be deleted and I have to reset the computer.
I'm using the latest HP drivers for the printer, Windows XP Pro with all Windows Update fixes and the latest upgrades for teh mainboard (Live-Update).
Is this a known error and is there a fix/workaround (can I set the USB in the BIOS to 1.1 only (instead of 1.1 and 2.0)??
According to HP it is related to the chipset and the USB driver. Until now I have not find a document explaining the problem for this mainboard and a proper solution.
    Does anyone have an idea?
    Thanks for your help!
    Cees

Cables are cables still at this point in the game so it could be that you have a faulty cable but there are no special 2.0 cables to buy...
Never been a big fan of the All-in-one printer/scanner/copiers, I've had nothing but problems most of the time when my clients buy them...but they still buy them...if you think about it they really only came out just over a year and a half ago so that technology isn't quite mature yet...
I doubt that it has anything to do with your setup directly, it sounds like a driver issue and one that's clashing with another driver that's used for something else in your machine...no I don't know what cause I don't know what you are using in your system heheheh
I had a client that bought one of the newer photo printers, why I don't know cause he doesn't even own a digital camera, but he just had to have one, but anyway, it would error out everytime he tried to print to it...I reloaded his system and systematically added in one component at a time...writing down everything I did...when I put in his ATI All-In-Wonder card and loaded the software for the TV part lo and behold when I printed I got the error again...couldn't fix it for my life either with all the newest drivers from ATI and HP...went backwards in time for older drivers to no avail...the guy stiffed me on the bill for over $1000.00 and I've not heard from him again so I can't tell you if he fixed it or not at this point...
    Cheers!! 8)

  • Problems installing Windows XP on at K7N2G-ILSR

    Hi,
I am having problems installing Windows XP on at K7N2G-ILSR.
    Config.
    K7N2G-ILSR
With 2 120 GB Western Digital WD1200JB drives
    Liteon CDRW and Toshiba DVD
    Memory ME-512MB-PC2700 DIM/DDR333/512MB/PC2700
Bios settings are all set to default. And at 4/2003 version
The WD drives are plugged into IDE1 with one as Master and the other Slave. The CD & DVD on the IDE2 with the CDRW as master and the DVD as Slave.
Boot to Dos the Drives are seen with no problem
Try doing a clean install and the System always hangs after initial driver load and Hangs when Blue Screen states "Setup is installing Windows"
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks

Have you tried changing the APIC function in BIOS. Either disable it or set it to MPS 1.1 see if that helps.
Also make sure your FSB is 100MHz and make sure your jumpers on the mobo are correctly set up. There are a lot of installation issues relating to FSB and win XP.
And finally make sure your memory is fully compatible with nForce boards. The default answer to everyone's nForce platform problems.

  • Sometimes cannot start PC: problem with Hitachi SATA Hard drive and K7N2G-ILSR

I have major problem with my 160Gb SATA Hitachi hard drive and my MSI K7N2G-ILSR motherboard.  Sometimes the PC can be started, sometimes it cannot.
After I installed a clean build of Windows XP Pro SP1 onto my new hard drive (as the only hard drive in my PC) and install all the necessary drivers, the system runs smoothly.  However, after about 2 to 3 weeks, sometimes when I start the PC, it cannot detect the hard drive and hence it claimes that it cannot find any VMI Pool Data (i.e. no OS detected).  What makes it really horrible is that, it is like the lottery everytime when I start the PC.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  The highest record was 8 consecutive failures (by resetting or by turning the power off and on again) before I can start the machine properly.  Also, the system sometimes just crashes in the middle of operating.
I have already sent the hard drive back to Hitachi.  Got the same model of hard drive back as replacement, but the replacement has the same problem, except with the replacement drive the PC can be started eventually after many tries, while with the previous drive it is possible that the PC cannot be started until after a few days later.
Also, it seems that my drive can detect either SATA hard drive or PATA hard drive, but not both.  (If I leave my old PATA drive connect in the primary IDE channel, Windows cannot detect the new SATA drive.)
Is my motherboard faulty?  Can it only use PATA drive?
My PC's spec is as follows:
    AMD Athlon XP 2500+
512Mb PC3200 SDRAM (set to run at 166MHz)
Hitachi 160Gb SATA Hard drive on 1st SATA channel (Model #HDS722516VLSA80)
Sony DVD+-RW drive and Panasonic DVD-ROM drive on secondary IDE channel
    Use onboard video (GeForce MX)
US Robotech V92 internal PCI modem
    SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Player soundcard
    Onboard audio disabled
    300W PSU
OS is Windows XP Pro SP1 (with all latest security patches up to date)

many harddrives just come with different ways to connect them.
the only sata drives i now that spins faster is western digital raptors 10k rpm.
all other is running at 7200rpm.
    older drives run at 5400rpm
Yes to get the full benefit of RAID, the Raptors are the way to go.Anything else, no significant difference.

  • Help needed - K7N2G-ILSR problem

I just got a K7N2G-ILSR mobo and after I installed it, I get an error "NO DRIVE ATTACHED TO FASTTRACK CONTROLLER. NO BIOS INSTALLED"
I downloaded the latest bios and flashed it but I still get the same error.
When I am in the setup, it recognizes my harddrive (which is a Maxtor IDE).
    I'm not using serial ATA.
Please help me figure this out.

the problem is that after i get that error message, it takes me to the windows safe mode menu.  after i pick a windows mode to start up with, it re-boots only to bring me back to the original error message.
    i can't boot into windows.

  • Great problems with K7N2G-ILSR onboard raid controller

I have really great problems with my s-ata raid controller. First of all i had a 40GB HDD attached to IDE3. Worked really fine.
Later on my system crashed and my raid controller seemed to be dead. (no "no array is defined" no "press crtl-f to enter setup,...).
Then I attached a s-ata drive to the first s-ata interface. Suddenly the raid controller said: "no array is defined, press ctrl-f to enter setup". I entered setup an built an array an restarted my computer. Again: "No array is defined, press crtl-f to enter setup."
Now my raid controller seems to be dead again cause it doesnt say a word again.
Please help me if you can. (Besides i tried to solve the problem with updating my bios. I tried all versions from v1.0 to v1.3 but there was no result.)

I have already tried two different types of Ram. 512 MB DDR 333 (I don't know the timing exactly but it's a CL2.5 Ram) and another one from a different manufacturer. Also DDR 333 CL 2.5. Then I combined both. But the raid controller didn't show any reaction and I can't imagine that the problem is the power supply because everything else works fine. Anyway... I will try to get a new K7NG2-ILSR on guarantee, sell my whole computer and buy the new K7N2-Delta because I have only problems with the K7N2G-ILSR.

It hasn't worked when i first wanted to use and i changed the jumper to the securit mode than it worked but it has never opened with one button pushing.I was always trying to get screen vision with 3-5 closing and opening. One day i tried to get the jumper back and i tried to open but it never worked. I got the jumper securit again but again never worked. I tried everything but it never worked after that event. Normally i had to inform it at first and give it back or give it to the repairing but i couldn't have time. Now i have to do it this time. Now i want to change this or something else but in Turkey. • MSI K7N2G-ILSR onboard video initialization problems

Hi, today I replaced my wife's trusty Abit KT7 motherboard with a MSI K7N2G-ILSR.  I used the onboard video since she doesn't play games.  Everything seemed to be working fine until I went to boot it up. The computer started up as usual, but the monitor did not intialize like it should.  The message on the monitor said that " the monitor was working correctly and to check the cord or the computer."  I rechecked all of the connections and everything seemed to be installed correctly.  I thought that maybe there was something wrong with the onboard video, so I decided to install the Radeon 9000 that was in the old system.  To my suprise I received the same message when I started the computer up the second time.  I have built several systems and have never encountered a problem like this before.  I read the thread about problems with the Radeon cards, but no one mentions anything about problems with the onboard video.   I am using a Duron 750, Antec 330 watt PSU and 512 megs of Kingston Value Ram.  I know that several posters have recommended that nforce 2 users need a more pwerful PSU and better ram, but I have a hard time beleiving that those things would cause the video not to intilaize.  I would appreciate any feedback and/or suggestions because I need to make a desision about hwat to do with this board.  Thx.

Well I appreciate the replys.  I formated the harddrive before I installed the motherboard because I was worried that the via drivers would cause problems when I booted it up and installed Win XP.  Bonz, you are right, I am just guessing that everything is OK since I can hear the system start up, but I can't see anything since the video never intializes.  I rechecked all of the connections and even took the motherboard out and reinstalled the cpu, memory and motherboard and the same thing happened.  I started thinking something was wrong with the monitor so I unplugged the monitor from my system, which I know works, and it did the same thing.  I just wish I could get the video to intialize so I could see to get into the bios to look around.  I will check the jumpers on the board and continue to mess around with it.  I would appreciate any feedback I can get.  Thx again.
