K7N2G-ILSR raid boot problem

Hi,
I have an msi  K7N2G-ILSR mobo and am having boot problems on the raid system.
Everything worked fine (raid 0 set up sata) and would boot fine, the bios had to be set up to look for other boot devices in order for the system to boot with raid drives.
Problem occurred when I added an ide card to give me 2 more ide channels. Still fine if I only connect cd roms to new card but as soon as I connect a hard drive it appears the msi board stops looking for the raid drives as a boot device, because I get the message NIVIDIA Boot Agen PXE-2.0(build 082 v1.82)
Copyright......................(info)
Copyright......................(info)

FFFFFFFFFF..-FFF..-FFFFFF... etc.
PXE-53: No boot filename received.
PXE-MOF: Exiting NVIDIA Boot Agent
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER
It seams there needs to be a bios update as when you scroll through boot options (first, second & third) in advanced setup there is no choice for raid. Therefore the only way to boot from raid is to choose “look for other boot devices” and that is OK until you add a second ide card with hard drive on.
I have version 1.6 bios (latest on msi`s site)
Any idears on how to get round this ?

Hi Raven,
For your info windows xp will support any number of ide channels (upto the number of spare pci slots you have).
I have another computer that has 2 extra ide cards in and has 2 dvd`s (on seprate channels) & 6 hard drives as well as raid hard drive set up. Windows is not confused and supports all devices and has done for the last few months ! This mobo has boot from raid in its bios so has no problems on boot up. The reason I need so many ide channels is simply I do video work and need loads of storage space so until I can buy 800gb hard drives for a reasnable price I am stuck with having to buy 200gb drives.
As I said it looks like either a bios update from msi or I`m going to have to buy a new mobo.
Regards.

Got a big problem guys build my comp today and when I turn on power the fans spin but my monitor shows nothing  Just check your signal.  I think everything is in where it should be. The lights on the back show two red on top and two green on bottom, not sure if that helps any.  Please help!

I had a boot problem too using WD600 , cut the first and second pin, works great 8o . Thanx - It was driving me crazy!  :D

When I removed the all the IDE connectors from the motherboard, I was able to finally get into the bios, which suggested to me that the problem may be my IDE drives.  At this point, I remembered an issue my girlfriend had on her computer over a year ago with her hard drive (same model as mine) where her drive wouldn't allow her ABIT KT7 MB to boot.  We both have the WD600AB model.  My previous MB was an Asus K7M, which did not exhibit this issue.
The 'solution' that I found on the Western Digital Forums was modify the IDE cable by cutting PIN 1 (on a 40-Pin Ribbon Cable) or PINS 1 & 2 (on an 80-Pin Ribbon Cable).  PIN 1 is normally the wire with the red stripe.  If your WD is on the end plug, make the cut between the two IDE device plugs so that it doesn't affect the second device.  Also, to make sure the cut is complete, cut it twice and remove the gap.
From what I understand, this doesn't affect the integrity of the data nor does it have any performance penalties.  If you'd rather not cut the cable yourself, WD may ship you a modified cable free of charge.  You'd need to visit their forums/website for more information.
If you've got a spare cable to test with, give it a shot.  Once I snipped pins 1&2, my K7N2G-ILSR has been running beautifully!

  • K7N2G-ILSR Sometimes boots, sometimes not.

I have a feeling I'm stuck with this, but maybe there's a eureka-moment I've missed? Having looked through the forum I've seen similar problems but I'm not sure this is the same.
Problem is with a K7N2G-ILSR that 70% fails to boot (RAM error), 10% boots with half RAM, and 20% boots OK. Full system spec:

    No AGP or PCI cards.
CPU idles at 30C, sustained load at 40C.
    =====================================================
I've tried all the CMOS reset, battery in/out etc suggestions with no change in symptoms.
Disconnecting HDs, DVD and front fan make no difference. BIOS v1.2, 3, 4, 5, 6 make no difference.
This is the 2nd motherboard... the first one (rest of system unchanged) worked great as far as booting went but had the INCREDIBLY ANNOYING HIGH-PITCHED NOISE from near the CPU socket. This was after running with the auxillary 12V (4 pin) cable plugged in. According to posts elsewhere in the forum, once that 12V cable has been used you can't get rid of the noise... so this time I have carefully *not* used it. Please don't tell me that the lack of it is why the current system is having problems! La-lah-LA-la-LAH I don't want to know :o)
To get the system to boot I do this (from OFF):
Turn on with front power button.
If memory error (beep and LED pattern):
turn off with front power button
count to ten and start again
If only half RAM on POST screen:
turn off with front power button
count to ten and start again
Otherwise dual channel msg comes up and we have lift-off!
I've tried other rituals (power cable, PSU switch, CMOS reset...) but the result's always the same.
When the system boots properly (1 time in 5) it's great... Win2k is happy and CPU/memory intensive apps are solid. But a Windows restart (or aven Ctrl-Alt-Del after a floppy boot) puts us right back to the problem: 1 time in 5 it'll restart happily, otherwise it's the damned beep-beep-beep!
RAM: yes, it's a brand I'd never heard of but they do seem to be a batch pair. As noted above, both DIMMs were OK in the first K7N2G-ILSR. They're also fine in a Shuttle SN41G2. So I'm a bit sceptical about the veracity of the RAM-error beeps!
So peeps, if you've read this far, any ideas what's causing me (re)boot hell? I think I'd just live with it but for one thing... I really need for this system to be remotely bootable (VNC and a Windows restart req)... hardly likely to work is it?!

wonkanoby: tried the pencil rubber thing but, sadly, no joy.
buggfix: I hear what you say and it is very tempting to plug the aux 12V in. I've got another K7N2G-ILSR in an Antec Plus 1080AMG case (Antec True430 PSU) with the 12V plugged in and no noise (yet). (But it does have a Win2k-srv memory-leak problem and that's why I'm desperate to get the system described at the top of this thread working - essentially a duplicate to let me test installation order.) The noisy board was older (going by s/n) so maybe it was a batch problem and I'd be safe enough now?
    0303234967 - noise
    0304036761 - OK in Antec 1080
    0304082234 - this thread's subject
Now wishing I hadn't tried to make such a low component-count server; shoud've stuck with basic board + NIC + SND + VID cards.
twistedbrowntucker: Possibly there was some follow-on damage, but it doesn't "feel" right. Still, now I'm reduced to the "known good" dance. If I can get the time tomorrow I'm going to break up a Shuttle (SN41G2, XP2600+, 2*512MB, 200GB Maxtor, LG DVDwriter, card reader) and see if I can pinpoint anything... swapping the RAM is number 1 obviously! Then the CPU and then maybe rip apart another PC or two for PSUs... I feel tired already!
My gig is normally software so, although I'm quite happy with hardware, I resent getting bogged down. Usually paying a bit extra for known-brands keeps me out of that - hey, I want to *use* the stuff!
    Thanks for your replies peeps.
ASIDE: Question about  the HD LED - I'm getting zero activity... should the S-ATA drives be showing up? Or the DVD activity?

  • K7N2G ILSR not booting, unlike any other in forums! (I think!)

    I have a:
    K7N2G ILSR
    XP 2400+ cpu
    2 x 512mb (Onyx) PC2700
    old 10gig HDD
When I boot it flashes past the award bios screen so fast I can hardly see it, then reports an error (to do with active flash or something?) and that there is no bios installed. This warning has something to do with "promise" at the top of the screen. This screen is only up for a second or less, so sorry about the vague info!
After this, it changes to a screen where it lists the IRQs for everything, then comes up with a disk I/O error...
    Am I being a dumbass?
    Thanks in advance
    P

thanks v much for the quick reply!!
HDD is a Fujitsu I think (am at work right now!) about 4 or 5 years old, on IDE 1 (using 80 conductor cable that came with m/b), set as master with no slaves. Jumpered on back to be master.
DVDrom is on IDE2 as master.
no jumpers have been changed, so its set as 133 fsb, and sound is not redirected to front panels.
    cheers

  • [nForce] K7N2G-ILSR network connection problems

My brother's system is as follows:
    AthlonXP 2000+
    MSI K7N2G-ILSR
    2x256 MB Crucial PC2100
    Emermax Powersupply
    Generic DVD ROM
    LG DVD burner
    MSI TV @nywhere
    WinXP Home SP2
His computer has been working more or less perfectly, although the TV card occasionally causes some trouble.  Today, he was no longer able to get on the internet.  From both the Network connections and Device Manager screens, his LAN interface is gone.  Only the 1394 interface shows up.
So far, I did a system restore to last week, which had no effect.  I made sure the BIOS hadn't disabled it for some reason, too, but that isn't the problem.  I manually installed the network adapter, and it said that the device could not start, error code 10.  The network adapter will not work in Safe Mode with Networking, either.  I tried the MS Knowledge base article regarding missing LAN icons, but that article was for situations in which the icons were gone yet everything still functioned, so it didn't really apply.  Reinstalling drivers had no effect.  I can ping localhost, but that could just be because the 1394 connection can act as an internet connection.
Any ideas?  I've not done a repair of Windows on the machine, but I'm not sure that would help.  I do have an extra network interface pci card I could put in if it is simply a problem of his onboard connection having died.  If I do this, is there a particular PCI slot that I should preferably use to avoid IRQ conflicts?

As far as I know drivers can be installed in SafeMode, but your LAN wont work till in normal.
A repair install is not a bad idea, as Windows is very fond of its own drivers.
LAN and sound problems are often early signs of a PSU near the end. You wouldn't know the specs of the Enermax? I guess it is alright, but you never know.
As the TV-card is problematic, try that one in another slot. Nowadays devices happily share IRQs without problems, but some older devices including older mobos (which is not the case here) were very conservative. ...I'll have to look in my drawer, wait a sec, please. - -  --
"The use and sharing of IRQs aren't mentioned in my MSI manual, (due to the APIC function I think), so I had to go to some ASUS manuals. As standards are standards, I believe things can't be to different. If someone has any addings or suggestions please come forward, so I can adjust the table.
*Please note that this is generally speaking and mainly for ASUS boards a few years old!
**Please note that you should not have any sharing with the IDE controller or similar!
***Please note that it is a good thing to have expansion PCI sound cards in slot 3!
****Please note that surprisingly enough it looks like PCI slot 2 would be free for any device, but AGP cards get hot and bigger so it is not a great idea.
    IRQ sharing table
PCI 1 shares with PCI slot 5
2 shares with AGP and PCI slot 6, or sometimes with onboard IDE
3 shares not, or sometimes with onboard audio/modem
    4 shares with onboard LAN
    5 shares PCI slot 1
6 shares with AGP and PCI slot 5
AGP slot shares with PCI slots 5 and 6
USB 1 shares with USB 2, 3 and USB 2.0
    2 shares with USB 1, 3 and USB 2.0
    3 shares with USB 1, 2 and USB 2.0
    USB 2.0 shares with USB 1, 2, and 3
Onboard audio/modemshares not, or sometimes with slot 3
Onboard LAN shares with PCI slot 4
Onboard IDE shares not, or sometimes with PCI slot 2 "

  • Another WinXP Sata Raid Boot Problem

Hi there, I've flipped though a bunch of posts but I haven't been able to find the issue I'm having, so I figured I'd post and cross my fingers.
I'm running a K8 Neo4 Platinum board (updated the bios to 1.9) and I'm trying to get it to boot WinXP off a striped pair of Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (400g).  With nothing else connected except a DVD drive, floppy drive, and the two HDs on ports 1 and 2 (set to striped array in the Riad setup), I booted up from the WinXP SP2 cd.
Pressed F6, loaded the drivers (newest ones I could find at the msi site).  Setup detected an 800g hard disk no problem.  Created a small partition (50g) for the OS, formatted normally, and let Setup do it's thing.  Everything went fine with no errors, reg key, settings, not a hitch.
And that's where the happiness ended.  Upon trying to boot from the drives, WinXP gets as far as loading Wup.sys and simply reboots itself.  Safe mode, last known all result in the same reboot.  I tried to repair the installation, fixboot, chkdsk, and that simply killed the installation wholesale.
As a side note, I can install boot off a single SATA drive without problems.
It feels like I'm forgetting something really simple, since XP was able to recognize and install without problems, but it just can't boot.  I've been fighting with this darn thing for a few days now, and I'm about ready to just give up and run them as single drives.  There is no data on there no reformatting or doing something funky is perfectly fine.  Anyone have any ideas?  Thanks in advance!

    and...? any changes?
get a copy of Memtest86 and test your memory for errors.
another and most suspected thing is your PSU:
    "Antec 400W (3.3v/30 5v/28a 12v/14A)"
get a decent PSU with 30A or more on +12V.
Ah, I read the spec wrong.  The PSU is dual rails so 12v1 is 14a and 12v2 is 15a. Hopefully, since pretty much everything else is unplugged, that should be enough power to boot.
I tried mem test, no errors after multiple passes.
Also, when I tried the new nVidia drivers, it got me to where I am now.  Auto reboot when trying to start Windows.  The old MSI drivers gave me an undefined error or an "unmoutable device" error.  Both resulted in a bluescreen and immediate reboot.

Using MSI K8N Neo2 with the nForce3 chipset and the Promise SX4100 SATA RAID5 controller...

When the system DOES boot, it works great, and I can leave in on for days with NO problems.
I know the Hynix memory is not "approved", but since the system is stable (when it does boot), and assume its not a memory problem.
The problem still occurs even after:

I changed the DVD cable and slot (1-3)
I even disconneced the DVD and / or Floppy.
    No change
    Help!!!!!

I have already tried two different types of Ram. 512 MB DDR 333 (I don't know the timing exactly but it's a CL2.5 Ram) and another one from a different manufacturer. Also DDR 333 CL 2.5. Then I combined both. But the raid controller didn't show any reaction and I can't imagine that the problem is the power supply because everything else works fine. Anyway... I have really great problems with my s-ata raid controller. First of all i had a 40GB HDD attached to IDE3. Worked really fine.
Later on my system crashed and my raid controller seemed to be dead. (no "no array is defined" no "press crtl-f to enter setup,...).
Then I attached a s-ata drive to the first s-ata interface. Suddenly the raid controller said: "no array is defined, press ctrl-f to enter setup". I entered setup an built an array an restarted my computer. Again: "No array is defined, press crtl-f to enter setup."
Now my raid controller seems to be dead again cause it doesnt say a word again.
Please help me if you can. (Besides i tried to solve the problem with updating my bios. I tried all versions from v1.0 to v1.3 but there was no result.)

  • Audio problem? with K7N2G-ILSR board

I have recently built the following machine :
    Motherboard : MSI K7N2G-ILSR
    Processor : AMD 2200
    Memory : Kingston 2 x 512MB
    Hard Drive : WD 80GB
    OS : Windows 2000 SP 3
The problem is if the on-board audio is enabled, the system either blue screens with a STOP error where it can't find the audio system file ( which exists ) or if it does boot into Windows, explorer.exe will crash.  I have to go into Task Manager to start explorer.exe in order to see my desktop.
If I disable the on-board audio, no problem what so ever, but of course this is not a solution I want to live with.
I have tried to troubleshoot this myself : taken out a stick of memory, switched memory, updated the drivers to the latest, etc.
Also another thing to note, when I finally don't blue screen, the Windows 2000 System event log will have 10-15 of the following error messages, "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\DR0".
I have told all of this to the MSI Support and they think it is either memory or a bad board not the drivers.  I have also burned in my system and no problems were discovered.
    Any help?
    Thanks,
    Wayne

Yes, I have tried with SP2.  Currently I am using SP3, though.  I am also using Bios 1.3
    Here are my IRQ assignments.
    IRQ Number   Device
1   Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard
    3   Communications Port (COM2)
    4   Communications Port (COM1)
5   NVIDIA nForce PCI System Management
    6   Standard floppy disk controller
    8   System CMOS/real time clock
    9   Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System
    12   PS/2 Compatible Mouse
    13   Numeric data processor
    14   Primary IDE Channel
    15   Secondary IDE Channel
16   NVIDIA GeForce4 MX Integrated GPU
20   Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
20   Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
20   Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
    20   NVIDIA(R) nForce(TM) MCP Audio Processing Unit
    (Dolby(R) Digital)
    20   NVIDIA(R) nForce(TM) Audio Codec Interface
20   OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller
I have disabled the Raid in the device manager, otherwise that came up IRQ 11.
I guess I spoke too early about not crashing, this morning it took about 6 reboots in order to finally get to a login this morning.  I would get a STOP error about not finding the audio driver.

  • Boot problems from RAID Array

I have recently reinstalled my system (K7N2G-ILSR).
It was working fine with a RAID array to boot (set to boot from SCSI in Bios).
The RAID array is 1 SATA drive with 1 IDE on IDE3.
I have 2 additional IDE HDDs and 2 Optical Drives (On IDE1&2).
I also have a SCSI controller with one external drive.
While reinstalling I had problems in the windows installer - after partitioning and copying files it would try to reboot, and would then come up NTLDR missing.
I initially thought it must be some confusion with my external SCSI drive trying to boot, but removing made no odds.
I ultimately had to unplug all my non raid HDDs, and it would then boot no problem at all.  Unfortunately having got it working, every time I try to plug any IDE HDD back in, it goes back to NTLDR Missing on boot (this is despite boot being set to SCSI in bios, IDE isnt even later in the boot sequence!)
I need to be able to reconnect my drives, but cant find anything comparable in the forum.
Why does it matter if I connect an IDE drive at all when it is set to boot from SCSI (RAID)?  Is my bios corrupt or something?
    Thanks for any help!

Thanks Noby and Richard for the advice, and sorry I have been slow to read it - I've been away.
I'm not sure I didn't do my last installation in exactly the way you describe anyway.  Still, it's probably worth another go.
I was hoping for an easy solution without reinstalling yet again, since the system is working albeit with only the RAID array connected.
Assuming the other drives do now have an MBR written to them, even if I reinstall windows without them connected, will they not still cause problems when reconnected?
Am I looking at having to wipe the drives and start again with them too?
Even if I do this, does formatting a drive wipe any MBR on it?
Is there not some way to directly edit the boot record on each drive when windows installer doesn't figure it out right?
Sorry for the multitude of questions but I have had this problem time and time again and never found a reliable solution - last time it seemed simple chance that I ever got the board working!
    Thanks again
    Martyn
