K7N2G-ILSR with 2800+ BIOS Settings

I have just changed my CPU from a 2400+ (266mhz) processor to a 2800+ (333mhz) and it won't run with stability unless I leave the CPU FSB Clock at 133mhz (for 266mhz) as it was set before (which means that is goes to 1666mhz CPU speed instead of 2083mhz - is 2083 correct for 2800+ ?).
Can anyone make suggestions for the best settings to make my PC work again. It crashes, blue screens and even the post boot screen is corrupt and flashes strange chars.
I have tried all sorts of combinations and nothing works as long as it is 166mhz FSB.  I know that without a AGP Card, it will only run DDR333 but I was hoping my DDR400 would just downclock.
These are the settings I require
1. System Performance - Auto?, Manual?, High Performace?
2. CPU FSB Clock - 100?, 133?, 166?
3. CPU Interface - Normal?, High Performance?
4. FSB/DRAM Ratio - BY SPD?, AUTO, 1:2 etc
5. Memory Timings
     T-(RAS)
     T-(RCD)
     T-(RP)
     XCAS Latency - 2? 2.5?
My relevant Spec is :
K7N2G-ILSR with AMD 2800+ Retail
2x512mb Winbond DDR400 (In Twinbank Mode)
450w PSU
IDE ATA133 IBM 80gb
Windows XP Pro
I know I should of left it alone....Cheers in advance  ;(

How can I tell if its a real 2800+.
I paid for a 2800+ Retail Boxed AMD chip with fan etc in the box.
By stepping do you mean overclocked?
I have tried the manual settings but it always shows jumbled letters etc on post and windows is unstable or won't boot.
I am going out later today to buy Corsair XMS2700.  Does it matter that they are not in a bundled matched pair?  The only pair I can get from my supplier is a 1gb (2x512mb) and its very expensive (£200).

  • Who gets past 240 FSB and with what BIOS/settings?

I hope that folks at MSI are working hard for a BIOS fix.
I don't understand how some guys are reporting FSBs of higher than 240, but I'm totally stuck there, no matter what I do. BIOS 1.2B5 made no difference at all.
Just you MSI guys make sure that all these are BIOS issues and not hardware related. My CPU has not reached its limit at 240FSB and I want it.  Oh, and same goes to AMD   for locking the higher multis. If they were not locked, I'd have been just perfectly pleased

First of all I am aiming for a 2.3-2.4GHz cpu speed, with memory running at 200Mhz or better.  This means I have to crank the fsb up to 250 or 260 and use a 9x multiplier, and 6:5 ratios.  These are my targets, now onto what I have tried.
Using the 1:1 ratio, I have managed to get to 2.15GHz (10x215fsb), with the memory at 2-3-5-2 (2.85V).  CPU voltage is default, and I've also run up to 225fsb with this config, although I have to slacken memory timings.
I have also used a 6:5 memory divider to try and see how far I can push the fsb/cpu speed.  I got up to 225fsb (2.25GHz cpu speed), again on default voltage and it was perfectly stable.
However the problems start when I try and go over 230 fsb, the board just will not POST.  I have kept the memory running below 200Mhz when trying this, and have even used 9x multiplier, 3xHTT etc...with no luck.
The highest I ever got it to POST on was about 232fsb (using 9x multiplier)
See my posts on my memory tests:  https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threadid=54265&sid=
I found two great brands of ram that allow me to run at 230 and 235fsb 4ht 1:1 with 2.7V 1t-2.5-3-3-10 timings. They both passed 30 rounds of memtest86 with no errors at this speed. Cpu@ 2350 mhz @ 1.6V

  • Tv Card With K7n2g-ilsr

    Hi,
I recently purchased a Hauppauge WinTV GO Card for Christmas, however upon installation, the card will not allow the computer to boot up, the Card hangs the computer without even letting me enter the BIOS setup menu. Without the card occupying the PCI slot, the computer boots up just fine. I've tried it in numerous PCI slots, even one which was occupied by a 56k Modem, but the computer hangs in all slots, without letting me boot up. Prior to installation, i went through the usual procedures, i firmly grounded myself, and wore disposable plastic gloves to prevent static discharge or grime getting onto the actual card. The card was firmly attached into the PCI slot, but it would still hang the pc. Is there a IRQ problem with the card or the motherboard??
    My specs are as follows:
MSI K7N2G-ILSR (with latest BIOS and Drivers)
    Geforce 4 Integrated Graphics
    AMD XP 2200+ Processor
    512 Dual DDR RAM
    80Gig Hard Drive
    Windows XP Professional incl. SP2
Hauppauge WINTV GO (the Tv card)
Is there a possible fix for this??
    Thanks
    Khalid
P.s is the TV Card just borked??

Well, i have a 56k modem, which was working fine, i removed that, because i never used it. I replaced it with the TV card, and it hangs the computer on boot up. Ive tried them on ALL PCI slots, (with and without the Modem in one of the slots) but all of them hang the pc, and its annoying!
I'll try glennvidia's suggestion, and see if it works, and no, im not using a PCI sound card, because the 5.1 soundstorm onboard is better then anything costing less than £40!
Oh and one last suggestion, DO NOT BUY HAUPPAUGE! They still havent replied to my email! (it has been two days now!)
Mustek is one of the companies that should be seriously considered when purchasing digital cameras! I bought a faulty mustek camera off ebay, and it was faulty, with no receipt, but they still gave me a working cam ;-) oh and they replied to my email within 24 hours, and very very friendly staff.
MSI should always be bought as well, reply to the borked northbridge fan took 29 hours :p
(oh and it was free postage as well!! with Gigabyte, i had to pay for the postage, and even then the northbridge heatisnk was dented!)

  • K7n2g-ilsr IGP graphics interference

When using the IGP, I see moving diagonal lines on my desktop.
I don't think it's a memory compatibility issue since I don't experience any reboots, lock-ups, crashes, etc. I suspect it's the PSU but I need a second opinion on this.
I already experimented with the bios settings with no luck, even on default.
    Here's my specs:
    XP 1,700+
    MSI K7n2g-ilsr
    2 pcs. twinmos 512 ddr400 (twinmos chips)
    Enermax 330 watts (+3.3v=30A, +5v=32A, +12v=12A, combined +3.3v and +5v= 160W)
I know that the 12v rail is too low, but like I said, I don't experience reboots and everything, just the annoying interference.
I haven't got this problem whenever I use a separate agp card (geforce2mx)

Your combined is low as well...should be more like 200W to get enuff power to this setup...

  • Problems installing Windows XP on at K7N2G-ILSR

    Hi,
I am having problems installing Windows XP on at K7N2G-ILSR.
    Config.
    K7N2G-ILSR
With 2 120 GB Western Digital WD1200JB drives
    Liteon CDRW and Toshiba DVD
    Memory ME-512MB-PC2700 DIM/DDR333/512MB/PC2700
Bios settings are all set to default. And at 4/2003 version
The WD drives are plugged into IDE1 with one as Master and the other Slave. The CD & DVD on the IDE2 with the CDRW as master and the DVD as Slave.
Boot to Dos the Drives are seen with no problem
Try doing a clean install and the System always hangs after initial driver load and Hangs when Blue Screen states "Setup is installing Windows"
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks

Have you tried changing the APIC function in BIOS. Either disable it or set it to MPS 1.1 see if that helps.
Also make sure your FSB is 100MHz and make sure your jumpers on the mobo are correctly set up. There are a lot of installation issues relating to FSB and win XP.
And finally make sure your memory is fully compatible with nForce boards. The default answer to everyone's nForce platform problems.

  • K7N2G-ILSR - my experience

Well, after reading through this board's multitude of problems, I think I encountered them all when I went to install my mobo.
    Here's my setup & experience:
    AMD XP 2600+
    MSI K7N2G-ILSR
    2x 512MB DDR 400MHZ Infineon 64x64 modules
    2x Maxtor 60Y080 80GB SATA 7200RPM drives
    Creative SB Audigy Platinum EX
    Intel Gigabit Ethernet Card
    Logitech USB iTouch Keyboard
Logitech USB Dual Optical 4 Button Mouse
    LG DVD ROM
    LG DVD-RW/+RW/RAM Drive
420 watt X-PIDER Aspireusa Black case w/purdy lights & clear side
    and a whooole lota patience.
First of all, let me explain, I used to do tech support, building computers, troubleshooting bad installs, fixing problems etc, my entire job was finding problems with systems and fixing them for a retail & corporate reseller.
Here's what I did, feel free to drop in suggestions of what I should/shouldn't have done, or what I can still try.
    1) I plugged everything in and turned it on.  (yeah yeah, I realized the error in my ways real quick)
Result: Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep... (all long beeps, which kept going on for ages, I lost count at 20+ and realized it wasnt an error code)
    2) I unplugged everything one part at a time and restarting until I had 3 things plugged into the mobo, the Mobo, the CPU, and the 2 sticks of RAM, so it was one of those 3 things that were causing the problems.
Result was still the same beeping fyi.
    3) I tried every option for the memory, alternated each stick in DIMM slot 1,2 and 3.  Tried combinations of each module in different slots, until I had exhausted them all.
      Result: same beeping.
    4) Tried a 256MB Samsung module in slot 1
      Result: POST!! YAY!
    5) Went into BIOS to see what the settings were, made sure everything was ok and kept going with the install and the Samsung module - I restarted & went to the SATA RAID utility next. - CTRL-F took me to that screen.
Result: Froze on RAID Controller screen.
    6) Or so I thought, after an hour or so, trying different things, replaced the USB Logitech Keyboard with a MS Natural PS2 keyboard was the next option.
Result: POST & RAID Setup works now!
    7) Followed manual directions at this point (yeah, I wasn't taking any chances after all this crap) Went to verify the drives.
Result: Frozen drive verifaction at 72%
    8) Retried verification.
      Result: Worked.
    9) Formatted Drive.
      Result: Worked.
    10) Installed OS after loading Raid Drivers.
Result: BSOD half way through Win XP setup.  Rebooted to find the Raid Array is offline.
    11) Deleted the Raid Array, started from Scratch.
Result: got allll the way to having the OS installed & Ready to go (I almost cried at this point, and hugged my roomie)
    12) Installed Service Pack 1.
      Result: Worked.
    13) Installed Motherboard Drivers (from CD - yeah yeah, I should have downloaded the latest)
Result: BSOD.  AGAIN.  Restarted to find the Array Offline yet again.
    14) Restarted after deleting the Array and setting it up again, thinking I'd have to install the OS all over, and it booted straight into the OS with no issues.  ???
    15) Left it running for 1/2 hour to see if it was an intermittent problem.
Result: While I was changing a T-Shirt (due to excessive sweat buildup from the stress) it spontaneously BSOD'd and reset - Array was offline again etc.
    16) Reset Array & left for the weekend.
Result - Ran aaallll weekend no problem.
    17) RMA'd my memory, getting replacements today, and so far the system still works...
so... ?   What should I do?  I'm scared it'll spontaneously BSOD again and leave me PCless.
Comments/Sympathies/Suggestions welcome.  I need consoling *sniff*

    18) Replaced the memory - memory worked.
    19) Wiped the drive clean - resinstalled the OS.
    20) Upgraded the BIOS on the Motherboard & RAID Controller
    21) Updated the Drivers for the Motherboard, Video Card and Sound Card - unplugged all other peripherals.
    22) BSOD On installing the Motherboard drivers.
    23) BSOD On running any 3d/Sound programs
    24) Live updated kept BSODing every time I tried to load it.
    25) Wiped the drive clean again, reseated all cards, tried one memory stick.
    26) Reinstalled the OS - Froze half-way through intall - restarted, reformatted, reinstalled.
    27) Immediately after install worked, I updated the Drivers for the motherboard - BSOD again.
    28) Installed all other required drivers (LiveUpdate for motherboard - Video, Sound) I thought maybe it was a problem with an outdated peripheral driver.
    29) played with all BIOS settings again with the RAM Latency, clock speeds etc.  BSOD every 4-6 minutes no matter what I tried.
    30) Tried pulling out the sound card and using the onboard, re-enabling it in the bios.  Same problem - BSOD every few minutes.
    31) Tried switching up the 9800Pro with an older Nvidia GeForce 3 - Same problem - BSOD every few minutes, the only things I have not replaced or unplugged are the Motherboard & CPU.
    32) Lost patience with said motherboard - pulled it out of the case & packaged it up to send back.

  • SATA controller on K7N2G-ILSR "supports IDE"

I have a K7N2G-ILSR with the onboard Promise 20376 Serial ATA controller, which supposedly supports using the IDE3 port as a separate IDE channel to connect hard drives and CDRoms and whatnot. I have not been able to simply get the SATA controller to work with IDE. I have tried connecting a hard drive and optical drives. With the single hard drive, instead of simply booting like it should, it tells me that no array is defined and asks me to create one. Since I have data on the hard drive already and don't want to risk erasing it by "creating an array", I didn't push my luck. With optical drives, it is the same story, except that of course I can't create an array with an optical drive, even if I try (nor does the setup utility let me). I am also thinking about purchasing a SATA adaptor for the hard drive, but am afraid that it is going to ask me to create an array again (again, fear of losing data). So, how do I get the IDE3 port to work as advertised? And how would I get the SATA working in a non-RAID configuration?

    They don't advertise that...
    On-Board IDE
An IDE controller on the MCP2/MCP2-T chipset provides IDE
HDD/CDROM with PIO, Bus Master and Ultra DMA133/100/66
       operation modes
Can connect up to four IDE devices
     Serial ATA Interface (Optional)
    Support 2 serial ATA plus 1 ATA133
    - RAID O or 1 are supported
    - RAID function works w/ATA133+SATA H/D or 2 SATA H/D
    • Connect up to 2 Serial ATA devices and 1 ATA133 device
This is from the website, I don't see that they say you can use the SATA as regular IDE drives...they are part of the raid controller period...the misconception comes by thinking it's used like we use a regular IDE but you have to create an array as I said in order to use them...you can select one of the raid drives to use as a boot drive via the BIOS but you have to enable the drive in the raid setup before it's accessible thus creating a seemingly IDE device...I don't have any SATA drives here atm so wasn't able to test this part of the MB yet...and I've beat my board into submission now and have to RMA it from doing so much testing with it...if I do get another one I'll see about getting a SATA drive and see what it does when I load the drivers for the raid in a non-raid setup and post my results...I agree that they don't explain it well either but I've never thought the manuals were written the best for most boards out there since English isn't their first language...something gets lost in the interpretation unfortunately heheheh The raid doesn't support opticals at all so that's not an option here...
    Hope that helps...

  • Request for proper BIOS settings for MSI "KM4M-V" VIA KM400

    Hello,
I tried to search on this problem but with no success. I have a computer that I had to reset the bios and I'm trying to get the clock speed adjusted to the processor chip. Here is my setup:
    MB = MSI "KM4M-V" VIA KM400 (MS-7061)
    CPU = AMD ATHLON XP 3000 "Barton" 333 FSB  OPN - AXDA3000DKV4D
Here is my problem, when I boot up the cpu shows the clock speed of 1.733 GHZ with default BIOS settings.(it shows this speed in windows when booted up also) When I try to go into the BIOS and change any of the speed settings under Advance Chipset Features, the cpu will reboot and loose video until I reset the BIOS with the jumper.
I was wondering if someone had a setup like this and could give me info on what settings are the RIGHT ones to get the AMD XP 3000 up to speed?   ;-)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

  • K7N2 Delta2 Platinum Bios settings help please

Please forgive me if I seem a bit stupid, but we all have to start somewhere.
As you can see from my signature although an old socket A set-up this should still perform pretty well when my son plays his games (Age of Empires 3) but the dam thing keeps crashing (back to the desktop) and performace is not what it should be.
I built the pc my self so I am ok to fiddle about with things but I am not as knowalgable as most people on this forum, So I would like someone to help me with some BIOS settings on this board, can anyone recommend some settings that would work well.

Having now read the excellent post by klondike on this board I want to update my bios to the 11.50 (B50) version.
I know about all the dangers of updating your bios but as I am having prob’s with my board and it seems like the B5 bios is better that the B4, I want to update it but I have tried now for 2 hours to update it and I am obviously doing something very wrong and it is doing my head in!
I have read the MSI guide to bios updating and others on this forum but I can’t get anything to even start to work.
I have downloaded and un-zipped the B50 bios update for my board. I have put the unzipped files in a folder in the C: drive I have named “test” I have made a dos floppy and set my bios to 1st boot floppy but when I boot to it at the A prompt you type C: (and enter) and it says bad file or command (I can’t remember which) so I then tried burning the bios files to a cd and once again after booting to the dos there is no option to get it to boot or find the cd drive you just get the A: prompt
I have also tried updating it though live update but live update says the latest version is 11.4 (B4) and that is what my board already has so I can’t update it from there as MSI have not updated their live update page.
I am almost at my wits end and feel like setting light to the dam thing, all I want to do is up date my bios its not that hard I have done it before on other pc’s but I can’t remember how I did it! (thats my age)
Please can someone spare me a few minutes to talk me though this.

Your temps should be somewhere in the low 30's C idle and somewhere under 40C under load. That would be an average but not an absolute. I run 27 to 29C idle and in the mid 30's under full load.
