K7n2g problem

this mouning when i switced my computer on The screen started to flicker only now and again though. i have noticed it does it when i started and shut down and application! e.g word or a game or any application
also the mouse cursor moves on its own!
what could be the cause of this problem?
is it the graphics card, the monitor or the PSU or could it be somehting else??
i have tried the monitor on another PC and it works fine so i don't think it is this
thanks

I have exactly the same issue, excepting that it started happening 2 days ago I think.
Does your 3.3V drop to around 2.6/2.7 when viewed with PCAlert 4?  Mine does.  I am trying to determine what the cause is.  Have you opened your case recently?  Added a drive?  or Added a stick of RAM?  Maybe a network card?  Have you blanked the CMOS?
We had a power outage--my PC is behind a UPS so I had time to shut down-- and my machine wouldn't POST after.  I took out and replaced RAM,  unplugged the power connectors to various devices, reset teh CMOS and then replugged everything.  As mysteriously as it happened, it cleared up after the unplug/replug of everything the machine booted up fine.
I am not sure if it ran fine for 2 or 3 days, but only a few days ago the symptoms you describe started.   I have also noted that the 3.3V is somewhat below that at times.
I use the on board graphics, and 2 sticks of 256Meg PC2700 DDR RAM, I have a CD-RW DVD ROM and a 40 GB WD Drive, and a 10/100 NIC for networking (as the onboard won't get an address from my Firewall).
I hope we can find the solution to this problem.

  • K7N2G Problems, Please Help!!

I am having the following probs with my new K7N2G board.
Booting up is a major issue the d bracket leds show this as a memory problem. I get most success putting one stick into dimm slot 3 but it still only boots up about 50% of the time. sometimes i get several beeps when i turn on the computer.
If i set the fsb to 100 i can boot into windows if it is set to 133 the system becomes unstable and crashes more often than not.
The temp settings shows the cpu temp at between 52 and 61c depending on what i set the fsb at. Is this too hot and is it why it becomes unstable?
Sometimes the system only reads 256mb of ram when 512mb are installed.
From reading articles on this forum it seems that there is a major problem with memory compatibility, I am using ebuyer memory which my brother also uses and works fine on another msi board. Is there a brand that is guaranteed to work? Why are so many people having so many problems with these boards, it seems crazy that it should be this difficult to get everything working as it should!!
    Please can someone help?!!

It's because newer technology can sometimes mean newer tighter specs on the MB thus causing your old sloppy spec memory not to work...I've said it before and I'll say it again:
If you have memory that works in one make/model of MB and you install it into another make/model of MB then you are comparing apples to oranges not apples to apples...what's good on one board's technology isn't always good on another board's technology...this is how electronics works in any aspect of the field...
There is a sticky post at the top that gives info on memory mfg's that work in this board and doing a search for memory will bring you multiple posts with the answers you're looking for...also read ppl's signatures and alot of times you'll get your answers there based on what they're using with their board.
    Take care! 8)

  • Got a problem with K7N2G-L

the problem is the MB doesn't seem to be disabling the onboard video like it should when i attach an expansion card into the agp slot (using an MSI G4MX-TD8X).  i've tried everything i can think of to get the dang thing to post... or at least show it posting.  after i attach the card, w/out reseting the bios or anything, i can hear it post and start windows etc., but just no video.  i returned the last vid card thinking it was a problem with it, but alas when i tried the new one same thing was happening  ;(   my stats on what is currently installed as far as hardware is at the bottom.  but basically my question is this, am i supposed to disable the onboard video via jumper or something? or is it like i think and auto disables it upon connection of expansion card?  possibly a bad  MB (i really hope not as i did a dang good wiring job)?  i emailed MSI support to no avail as of yet, course it's only been like 24 hours, but you'd think they'd have an 800 number or something to contact them.  :(  i did update the bios last night but haven't had a chance to try out installing the vid card yet.  will post back if that ended up working.
    okay, for the specs:
    350 Watt Enermax
    MSI K7N2G-L
    AMD 2200+ XP
256 Kingtston 333 ram(have another 256 to install after i get things ironed out
MSI G4MX-TD8X (at least trying to install this, using onboard vid atm)
    D-Link NIC
board is set to 133FSB, if it's in safe mode it doesn't post at all ?(  hehe.  of course it will post in higher, 166 is highest i've tried and it ran stable, but put back down to 133 for troubleshooting purposes with the vid card :(

i've thought about that, but with my drives attached and everything, i'm hovering around 200W total... did the math.  but did forget to mention, so far using the onboard video (even with FSB overclocked to 166) haven't had any stability problems with the motherboard, which is why i haven't stripped it out yet to go get another one.  i checked stability w/ 3dmark2k1 and about a 2 hour session of JKII running everything at full, even with quincunx enabled but got choppy a bit with that in parts. and btw, you'd assume correct with me moving the monitor adapter.

  • USB 2.0 problem (K7N2G-ILSR and HP PSC 2210)

I'm using a K7N2G-ILSR mainboard in combination with a HP PSC 2210 all-in-one printer. The printer sometimes stops printing and produces an error. The print can not be deleted and I have to reset the computer.
I'm using the latest HP drivers for the printer, Windows XP Pro with all Windows Update fixes and the latest upgrades for teh mainboard (Live-Update).
Is this a known error and is there a fix/workaround (can I set the USB in the BIOS to 1.1 only (instead of 1.1 and 2.0)??
According to HP it is related to the chipset and the USB driver. Until now I have not find a document explaining the problem for this mainboard and a proper solution.
    Does anyone have an idea?
    Thanks for your help!
    Cees

Cables are cables still at this point in the game so it could be that you have a faulty cable but there are no special 2.0 cables to buy...
Never been a big fan of the All-in-one printer/scanner/copiers, I've had nothing but problems most of the time when my clients buy them...but they still buy them...if you think about it they really only came out just over a year and a half ago so that technology isn't quite mature yet...
I doubt that it has anything to do with your setup directly, it sounds like a driver issue and one that's clashing with another driver that's used for something else in your machine...no I don't know what cause I don't know what you are using in your system heheheh
I had a client that bought one of the newer photo printers, why I don't know cause he doesn't even own a digital camera, but he just had to have one, but anyway, it would error out everytime he tried to print to it...I reloaded his system and systematically added in one component at a time...writing down everything I did...when I put in his ATI All-In-Wonder card and loaded the software for the TV part lo and behold when I printed I got the error again...couldn't fix it for my life either with all the newest drivers from ATI and HP...went backwards in time for older drivers to no avail...the guy stiffed me on the bill for over $1000.00 and I've not heard from him again so I can't tell you if he fixed it or not at this point...

  • K7N2G-L restart problem

    Hi
If I do a cold start my system will boot up ok,but if I have to do a "restart" after installing something it boots up and the gets to the part where it says "Searching for IDE devices" and it will hang.If I power off and then on again it will boot up normaly.Apart from that it runs well...any ideas  ?(
    Athlon xp 1800+

    dual 512meg DDR 333 in slots 1 and 3
Radeon 9700 Pro 8x AGO 128 Meg Video Card
4 80mm Cooling Fans Throughout the case.
CPU Temp runs on average between 50c - 60c
Case Temp runs on average about 89f - 100f
When I set this thing up I had a 300 Watt supply and it did not fully run things and did have some problems with the HD lights staying on, my guess was due to not enough power. So beefing it up to 360 Watts fixed that.
Also had restart problems quite often, at least 3 or 4 times a day it would just reboot on its own, I run and operate a computer store , so I had the ability to try different things to fix this. Turns out the memory on the nForce chipset boards is VERY important. Brand new sticks from a variety of sources had different affects, including not counting all the memory properly, restarting randomly and not booting at all. Believe it or not, one of the cheapest memory makers on the market seems to have been the best for use in the machine and that would be the Kingston Value Ram. So, if at all possible try getting some of them and see what happens. The worst??? All Components Memory.
You guys should also look at the 4 lights that are or should be in the back of your machine provided by MSI for your troubleshooting aids.. They do work and are quite helpful.
Sorry for the lengthy message post, but thought maybe I could be of some help to somebody.

  • K7N2G-L & 9800Pro Problem

I've done a search and found no helpful information. I'm having a lot of lock ups and I've replaced almost everything in my rig:
    2500+
    2x256 pny 2700ddr
    ati 9800pro
    sb audigy
    antec 400w ps
    maxtor 120gb drive
I've even tried lowering all of the timings and dropped my fsb to 133. I'm frustrated and would appreciate any help. By the wy I'm sure cooling is not an issue and I had the same problem with an ATI 9700 pro all-in-wonder. Thanks

Repoman there is an issue related with the 3.4 BIOS and ATI video cards, some have it and some don't, but MSI recommends using 3.3/1.2 K7N2G-L/K7N2G-ILSR respectively and are supposedly working on a fix for the problem.
IMHO it's a timing issue during post and the initialization of the AGP bus but I'm not privvy to their engineering info and can't verify this so...
Hang in there and flash back to the older BIOS and you should be fine for now...Oh and FYI disregard the high temps for the CPU that you'll see for the 3.3 BIOS as they are 10C too high...this is also a known issue that they're looking into. So be careful if you're going to do any OCing on your system.
    Cheers!! 8)

  • Problems installing Windows XP on at K7N2G-ILSR

    Hi,
I am having problems installing Windows XP on at K7N2G-ILSR.
    Config.
    K7N2G-ILSR
With 2 120 GB Western Digital WD1200JB drives
    Liteon CDRW and Toshiba DVD
    Memory ME-512MB-PC2700 DIM/DDR333/512MB/PC2700
Bios settings are all set to default. And at 4/2003 version
The WD drives are plugged into IDE1 with one as Master and the other Slave. The CD & DVD on the IDE2 with the CDRW as master and the DVD as Slave.
Boot to Dos the Drives are seen with no problem
Try doing a clean install and the System always hangs after initial driver load and Hangs when Blue Screen states "Setup is installing Windows"
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks

Have you tried changing the APIC function in BIOS. Either disable it or set it to MPS 1.1 see if that helps.
Also make sure your FSB is 100MHz and make sure your jumpers on the mobo are correctly set up. There are a lot of installation issues relating to FSB and win XP.
And finally make sure your memory is fully compatible with nForce boards. The default answer to everyone's nForce platform problems.

  • Sometimes cannot start PC: problem with Hitachi SATA Hard drive and K7N2G-ILSR

I have major problem with my 160Gb SATA Hitachi hard drive and my MSI K7N2G-ILSR motherboard.  Sometimes the PC can be started, sometimes it cannot.
After I installed a clean build of Windows XP Pro SP1 onto my new hard drive (as the only hard drive in my PC) and install all the necessary drivers, the system runs smoothly.  However, after about 2 to 3 weeks, sometimes when I start the PC, it cannot detect the hard drive and hence it claimes that it cannot find any VMI Pool Data (i.e. no OS detected).  What makes it really horrible is that, it is like the lottery everytime when I start the PC.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  The highest record was 8 consecutive failures (by resetting or by turning the power off and on again) before I can start the machine properly.  Also, the system sometimes just crashes in the middle of operating.
I have already sent the hard drive back to Hitachi.  Got the same model of hard drive back as replacement, but the replacement has the same problem, except with the replacement drive the PC can be started eventually after many tries, while with the previous drive it is possible that the PC cannot be started until after a few days later.
Also, it seems that my drive can detect either SATA hard drive or PATA hard drive, but not both.  (If I leave my old PATA drive connect in the primary IDE channel, Windows cannot detect the new SATA drive.)
Is my motherboard faulty?  Can it only use PATA drive?
My PC's spec is as follows:
    AMD Athlon XP 2500+
512Mb PC3200 SDRAM (set to run at 166MHz)
Hitachi 160Gb SATA Hard drive on 1st SATA channel (Model #HDS722516VLSA80)
Sony DVD+-RW drive and Panasonic DVD-ROM drive on secondary IDE channel
    Use onboard video (GeForce MX)
US Robotech V92 internal PCI modem
    SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Player soundcard
    Onboard audio disabled
    300W PSU
OS is Windows XP Pro SP1 (with all latest security patches up to date)

    that is not entirly correct.
many harddrives just come with different ways to connect them.
the only sata drives i now that spins faster is western digital raptors 10k rpm.
all other is running at 7200rpm.
    older drives run at 5400rpm
Yes to get the full benefit of RAID, the Raptors are the way to go.Anything else, no significant difference.

  • K7N2G Geforce resolution problem

Hi, I looked around the forum but couldn't find anybody with exactly the same problem so...
I've got the K7n2G with onboard Geforce4. For some reason, I can't get it to display a resolution of higher than 800x600 using 32-bit colour. In fact, if I go into the NVidia tab that's in the Control Panel->Display menu, it doesn't even give me the option of choosing 32-bit colour at all! This is clearly wrong. Does anyone have any ideas/advice? BTW, I'm using the correct .inf file for the monitor and the monitor does support 32-bit colours at high resolution so that isn't the problem.
    Thanks in advance.

sounds like you have only 1x dimm
get a matching second in dual channel, one of them in slot 3
then you will get more options
and twice the vga performance as well

Well, at anyway the fact is this machine doesn't post from cold when the bus is that high, so i have to turn it off, set the jumper which control the fsb to 100 mhz and turn it on, hold for 5-7 secs turn it off again, back to the jumper set it to 133 + of fsb and turn it on, that way makes it post,,, what can it be?

What you can do is list all your components that are in your machine. Then once we know what you have maybe someone can help. (See my signature below as an example)

  • New USB-problem? (K7N2G-L)

Did a search of the forum but didn't find any report that seemed the same (sorry if I missed it)
When turning the system on, USB-devices are most of the time not recognized - all settings are ok, the drivers are there, no problems I can discover - until I remove and reattach my USB-devices. At the next soft reboot, they will still be recognized. If I turn the machine off again, I'll have to reseat everything again, kind of uninteresting and tedious after a couple of weeks now.
I have the latest BIOS (3.3), all devices work flawlessly after reseating, and the fun part is that this phenomenon occurs in both Windows 2000 Pro (all updates installed) and Mandrake Linux 9.0 (all updates installed).
The system is currently a little OC'ed, but this happened on the vanillasystem as well. The currents are well withing specs according to the hardware manager of W2K, and all voltages are also within spec (says Hmonitor and AIDA32). I'm at a loss. Any ideas appreciated

I'd doubt it is my memory, but Bonz, sure, here's my entire spec and how I run it minus the PSU. I can dismantle the machine and check what specs it has if you wish:
    MSI K7N2G-L (MS-6570) BIOS rev 3.3
    Athlon XP1800+
    2x TwinMOS PC2700 CL2 256Mb (in dual channel)

    Compaq MV740 17" Monitor
Tt Volcano 11 XE CPU cooler
    Tt DDR-coolers (1 active w/fan, 1 passive)
    2x 8cm Papst chassis fans
    1x 8cm Delta chassis fan
    1x 4cm fan on mainboard

     Logitech Wingman Gaming Mouse
     Flashmate 4-in-1 Memorymedia-to-USB adapter
     Sharp Zaurus SL-5000D w/cradle
I'm running at 10.5x175FSB (ie 1842MHz) and the memory at 3-2-2 CL2. Don't let that scare you though, as this USB-problem occurs also at 133 and 166FSB, and with memorytimings by SPD (horrendously slow). Nothing is warm and I've installed a fan at the Mainboard heatsink to keep it cooler too.
As I said, this occurs in W2K Pro (SP3) and Mandrake Linux 9.0.
I'd expect behaviour like that from a severely OC'ed system, but not from my modest OC (or from no OC at all). I even backed down a few MHz to let the poor onboard GFX have an easier life 'til that 4800SE ends up inside it. Then there'll be no telling what will happen...
(Sidenote: the DirectX-tests (DxDiag) says the on-board sound do not support hardware buffers. As the SB Live do hardware buffers, that would mean the onboard sound is in some way inferior to a Live from the non-soundquality point of view but rather from system performance?)
EDIT: wonkanoby, I have tried your solution. I'll tell if it seems to help or not. Thx.

  • MSI K7N2G-L nothing but problems!!!!

I've been trying to get my AMD 2700+ to run in my K7n2G-L for over a week now.  When I boot the CPU registers as a 1500+.  There are no multiplier settings on MSI's website for the 2700+ for this board so I just stepped back and used the 2600+ settings to be safe.  Then my board wouldn't post so I set the jumper to 100mhz and she posted again.  It will register as a 2700+ in Safe mode (100mhz).  But when I try to load an OS I get a BSOD.  I've RMAed my CPU and my memory now so its has to be this board.  Someone please help me out if you have any ideas! Thanks!

I'd look at the PSU that you're using for the system first...do Wonka's formula for checking total power on the 3 main voltages then if that isn't the problem I'd RMA the board...just doesn't seem like a MB problem tho...

    I'm not using serial ATA.
Please help me figure this out.

the problem is that after i get that error message, it takes me to the windows safe mode menu.  after i pick a windows mode to start up with, it re-boots only to bring me back to the original error message.
    i can't boot into windows.
