K7n420 pro early chipset intialization
I am getting early chipset intialization error message and computer fails to boot up, it was working fine before. It happened once before when it was installed but I can't remember what msi told me to correct it. any idea's?
gaspasser,
That is the classic example of RAM that is not compatible with nForce. (Just because it worked once does not mean it will work all the time. If the advice given above does not work, try changing your RAM.)
I always use Mushkin High Performance RAM with nForce without any problems.

Good Evening,
Hello, I had to reinstall my OS recently. Upon reinstall, 5 drivers
were not found. They are:
PCI Device
Ethernet Controller
Multimedia AudioController
Multimedia Audio Controller
Video Controller (VGA Compatible)
Video Controller
One is the Radeon 9500, however, the one that is the most
important is the Ethernet Controller. I attempted to reinstall this driver
using the i386 directory on the Windows 2000 CD. It did not find a device
driver. I tried the same with the CD that came with this motherboard. It
also did not find a driver. The 6373 manual did not tell me which device
driver I would need to get these devices to function. I would like to get
all of these to function except one of the Video drivers, I'll handle that
myself later.
Where can I get these drivers? What am I missing?

Win 2000 Pro w/no SPshort answer: the nvidia nforce platform driver is indicated nowhere.
Long answer: The nvidia drivers are "reference drivers". Theoretically, the system integrators test and release them under their own name for their own platform (you can find those under the driver tab in the MSI description). However, this process takes time and is done unfrequently. Moreover, they are just rebadged reference drivers.
So, just grab the latest nvidia drivers and all will be OK. -

clone your system and repair it with Disk Warrior instead
Or try a clean test system install on another drive
A must: SmcFanControl 2.2 - a mere 400 rpm extra to keep air cooling up
Try to run w/o externals. MyBook included.
Is that a 7200.11 1TB? they had a lot of issues.
Run AHT off your OEM DVD.
2008 had to have EFI and SMC updates to deal with freezes on wake from sleep, and like all models, high inrush current. Hopefully you have a UPS and is 1500VA unit.
When you do hard restart from power button, you almost certainly add more directory errors and to files requiring immediate attention to repair and rebuild the directory; and to scan and repair and delete cache and temp files and folders. A must. Invest in bootable backups SuperDuper along with Disk Warrior (or TechTool Pro 6, maybe Drive Genius 3 but I'd rate that #3).
TimeMachine has its own bad habits, especially with Green drives and some externals.
Try to rule out everything and then add back one at a time.
And it may just be time to replace the 8800, very common, a couple threads this week, and it is 3 yrs old. Might want ATI 5870 or 5770. -
Early Chipset Initialization Failure
Well hooked up my new computer and it was working good running XP pro and i started playing some unreal tournament and my computer just shut down, i try and restart it and it gets stuck on the 2nd combo of leds on d-bracket which is Early Chipset Initialization and the system will just hang there?? I tried all the basic troubleshooting nothing got it to work... anyone have an idea what the problem is? should I just RMA the board?
Just throwing my 2 cents in the mix... I had the same "Early chipset initialization" boot failure and it turned out the CPU was dead. Dead to the point that it would not POST far enough for the DBracket to indicate a dead CPU. Anyway, not sure if you have anyone with another AMD64 you can try...?

K8T Neo-FIS2R No boot - Early Chipset Initialization LED
Went from a MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR with XP 2500+ O/C'd to 3200+ to an MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R board with a retail Athlon 64 3200+ and a Thermaltake Silent Boost Heatsink/Fan combo.
RAM = 2 x 512MB Apacer PC2700 (MSI approved).
Video= ATI 9800 Pro AIW
Antec Sonata case with 380Watt True Power +12V-18A, +5V-35A, 3.3V-28A
Seagate 160GB SATA 7200.7 drive.
On boot, system hangs at #1 red LED indicating Early Chipset Initialization.
Video is blank, all switches work, all drives spin up, no beep codes, just dead.
Tried just CPU, Fan/Heatsink, Video and still same.
Without any RAM, system beep codes for RAM.
Tried RAM in slots 1 and 2, 3 and 4 and just one by itself. Never a change to the DBracket light.
Cleared BIOS and retried. Nothing. No video at all.
What does that "Early Chipset Initialization" mean anyway? I guess the board is bad. This is it's first boot attempt.Well, I think I know what the problem is, aside from the PSU... I tried my brother-in-laws 550 PSU that pushes 24A on the +12V and it did not budge. I think it is the board. I did an RMA with Newegg and will be sending it in for a replacement.
Thanks for the advice on the PSU's... I will be heading back to Newegg to get one.
As an aside, I did get a new PSU since my last post. It was a Maddog Multimedia 550 that is made by Thermaltake. The voltage is not listed on the outside of the box, so, once I opened it, I noticed a couple things. One, it is a 480 not a 550, and two, the +12V is a paltry - abismal - 18A! This was CompUSA's best power supply and cost $140 after taxes! (I wanted one now, not in the few days it takes Newegg to get me one). Needless to say, it is going back. Since the numbers were not on the outside of the box, they are taking it back without a restock fee.
I will quell my desire for now now now and wait until a good one from Newegg arrives. I will let you know of my results!
ps - I am toying with the idea of the PC Power one... ! -
Early Chipset Initialization problem with K8T Neo 2 - FIS2R
This one has me stumped.
I went to install a new CPU fan earlier today and while I was installing the fan I had to remove my sound card and AGP card so I could screw the fan to the side of the heat sink.
I got all that done and went to start the computer back up and now I get a contineous high pitched sound while at the same time 3 beeps. The D bracket shows a green LED on 1 so this is the "early chipset initialization" problem.
What is causing this and why would this happen after a fan installation?

Early Chipset Initialization error: One solution
I too was plauged with a non-booting K8T_Neo board that stuck on "Early Chipset Initialization" according to the lights. I knew my Thermaltake 480w PS wasn't it - and sure enough it was the RAM like others have said. I was trying Corsair XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series, (Twin Pack) 184 Pin 1GB(512MBx2) DDR PC-4000 - Retail. So today I picked up some Crucial PC3200 256mb sticks and bingo I'm in.
Later today I'll fiddle with the timings to see if I can get the Corsair to fire and let you know what happens. Buyer beware!Quote

My AMD Athlon XP 1700+ isnt giving everything with K7N420 Pro...Help
Like it says in my topic, I have an AMD Athlon XP 1700+ and the K7N420 Pro mobo.
Normally, my Athlon XP 1700+ would have to run at 1.47ghz but somehow, it only runs at 1100mhz...
Now my question is why? Is it maybe the FSB? If so, how, and to where, should I change it?
Thanks in advance..

Hi,
Welcome to the Forum, you set the FSB in the Bios under Advanced Chipset Features/ CPU FSB Clock. -
K7n420 Pro NForce is History...!
I was looking today at MSI in the bios page to see if there is a new bios update for my board and guess what...??
...k7N420 Pro (MS-6373) is not even listed anymore neither the Bios nor the Product pages... 8o :( ;( :( ...
Instead nforce K7N420 information was moved in the Archives section X( ....so it has become history...
Suddendly, i felt very alone obsolete and abandoned :(
and considering this is only a 1 year old motherboard.
What I can say...shame!!
ManolisI am thinking of unlocking my Palomino (Athlon XP 1800+) and running him at 1800MHz (13.5X133) as a 2200+ one.
But i am not sure yet if the board and the CPU can take it. My Thermaltake Dragon Orb 3 (up to 7000rpm) coper based CPU cooler will provide the sufficient extra cooling needed.
I did not come yet across any encouraging words about working the k7n420 with an unlocked Palomino at a higher multiplier setting. Currently i work my Athlon XP (locked) 1800+ at stock speed 1.53MHz (11.5X133).
k7n420 is really bad when overclocking the FSB. I never succeeded to get past 137MHz FSB (Crucial PC2100 2x256MB sticks cas2.5), thus 11.5X137=1576MHz (i.e. Athlon XP 1900+) and get rock-stable operation. UT2003 crashed at 140MHz FSB However i didn't try yet overclocking with the newest v2.7 bios.
Any feedback on this matter would be appreciated.
What are you recon?...
Yours,
Manolis
p.s could it be that the prior version 2 chipset BKSOD Audio bug was responsible for the poor FSB overclocking performance? Did anyone succeded with higher than 145MHz FSB and multiplier settings? -

I am trying to connect my MacBook Pro (early 2011 w/ Intel HD 3000/ 384Mb) to an external display with a 2560x1440 resolution. Specifically, what cable/connections do I need to display at this resolution? I cannot get the display to work using a "Thunderbolt to HDMI" or a "Thunderbolt to DVI" connector. Note: I used both older and newer (uni-directional) HDMI cables on the first config, and a Dual-link DVI cable on the second config. Apple specs state this is possible ( support.apple.com/kb/SP619 ), but I am at a loss as to how this can be done. Thanks in advance for the help!
You use a Mini DisplayPort to either HDMI or dual-link DVI adapter. If that component doesn't work, something's wrong with either the cable or something else in the connection.
(112855) -
Hi to all.
I have a problem connecting external display (Dell U2311H) to my 13" MacBook Pro (Early 2011).
I use Tecklink Mini DasplayPort to HDMI adapter (http://www.techlink.uk.com/products/wires_cables/wiresmedia/wiresmedia_media/wir esmedia_mini_displayport_plug_to_hdmi_plug), but since U2311H doesn't have HDMI input, I also use Manhattan DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (http://www.manhattan-products.com/en-US/products/8101-displayport-adapter).
And nothing.
The display is not detected, no picture or even external monitor presence at all.
I even reset PRAM, and installed 10.8.2 Supplementary update.
I also plugged and unplugged all I could, with no luck.
As I can see on Apple discussion, it is a common problem with 2011 MacBook Pro's.
It seems like the problem is in Thundebolt port, it somehow does not work properly.
If anyone has solved such ploblem, please let me know.In reply to my own post have to say appologies to Apple whose Thunderbold port I used to blame.
Shame on me)
So, what was my problem?
Guess what?
Manhattan DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter !
The point is it's actually do only what it said to do, converts DP to HDMI.
But I for some reason thought it can be used vice versa, to be HDMI to DP converter))
I was wrong.
I bought new one HDMI to DVI adapter and now I HAVE external display!
Thunderbolt works like a charm.
So I'm very satisfied now. -
Hey all,
Summary:
My GF's Macbook Pro (Early 2008, non-unibody I believe) "died" earlier this year without notice or a cause for why, then it worked months later, then it didn't again.
Symptoms:
It stopped booting, with the only signs of life are:
The annoying boot sound that you hear right-away, like a winding sound. "Weeeeah woooo"
A fan turns on immediately after the sound.
The front light (on the open button) is solid.
The battery will light up and show how much juice is left.
The only thing to do from here is to hold down the power for 10 seconds.
Don't worry, my story gets more interesting...
Now, I had another computer and my GF didn't need her macbook seriously for a while, so I didn't research the problem or how to fix it, until last week. Perusing the various help forums and communities, I came across the reset SMC suggestion, so I decided to try a few things on Apple's SMC reset page.
I tried a couple things, including taking the battery out, and LOW AND BEHOLD: IT CAME ON, like nothing happened! The screen was fine, the performance was fine, it updated (to the new Safari and iTunes, as an example) fine, and it restarted fine multiple times. One of the main reasons I wanted to get it working was to save some family pictures we had saved, so I started uploading the images to an image cloud site. I'm sending them at full-res so it takes a while and I go to sleep around 2 am so I'm not too late into the office in the morn. When I wake up, I go to check the image upload progress and the laptop is Off. I figure it just went into standby after finishing, so I hit the power button...
And it doesn't boot again. It's back to the same issue as before. I try doing what I did last time, then resetting the SMC, but nothing has worked this time.
Any ideas? It's out of warranty of course, which is why I'm here.
Thanks in advance!Since no one else is answering, I’ll jump in.
Your story is interesting indeed. I’m not sure I can help you fix the Mac but it sounds like there is a reasonable chance of recovering the data.
I assume it came with installation disks. Will it boot from them? If so run Disk Utility from there and try to repair the system disk.
For the hardware problems on your Mac it is time to take it to Genius Bar at an Apple store for a free diagnosis and estimate of repairs.

It could be your disk failing but it sounds more like flakey electronics in the system. Let’s assume is is the system board until a Genius tells you otherwise. If so, you can simply put the working system disk in an external enclosure, mount that on your other Mac and copy the data. Here is a source for the inexpensive hardware you would need:

SATA enclosure: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/ES2.5BPU2W/
There are multiple directions to go from here. Let me know what happens when you try theses first options. -
MacBook Pro Early 2011 - Airplay Mirroring only sends audio to Apple TV 2nd Gen
Ok, I'm stumped by this one. I have a 15" MBP Early 2011 edition and an Apple TV 2nd Gen. Airplay Mirroring from my MBP to Apple TV only transmits the audio -- the MBP will resize the screen like it's connected to a 16:9 device, and Apple TV will show a black screen like it's about to pick up the video signal, but no video transmits. A couple of times, video started transmitting, but it was about 30 seconds delayed (?!) and extremely choppy. Both devices are connected wirelessly to a Linksys router with 5 GHz (wireless N) capabilities. The router has been configured to Apple's recommendations for Airplay Mirroring.
A little more about my MacBook Pro:
Early 2011 Model ID: MacBookPro8,2
OS: 10.8.2 Mountain Lion
CPU: Intel Core i7
Processor Speed: 2 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 4 GB
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6490M, VRAM 256 MB Total
This problem is driving me crazy! Airplay works flawlessly between my iPhone 5 and Apple TV, but not with a much more powerful laptop. Also, I tried Mirroring from a friend's 13" MacBook Pro, and it did the same thing.
Any suggestions, tips, ideas, etc. to get this working is appreciated!Rudegar wrote:
your macbook dont support airplay mirror
He has an Early-2011 MacBook Pro, which does meet the requirements. The issue is that it is running OS X 10.7.5 and needs to be upgraded to Mountain Lion to use mirroring.
