MSI K7N420 Pro: no 5.1 sound

hi everyone,
it's been two years that i bought my MSI K7N420 Pro mobo. I spent lotz of hours to search for a sollution to get 5.1 sound by the onboard soundcard. I have a Desktop Theater 5.1 from creative, but i never heard the middle speaker, not even when playing dvd .
I'm very disappointed in my mobo, and i'm thinking of getting an other soundcard, like the live 5.1. Can anyone help me getting the onboard card to work

you can use it with digital out via spidif
to get analogue 3 channel out you needed to buy a seperate cnr riser card they did not send with it but was avaidable seperate to get the other 2 connections

K7N420 pro boot problems?

my K7N420 pro has been working great for at least a year but has recently developed a problem...
I leave my PC always on most times and last week when i wiggled my mouse to wake it up nothing happened so i hit reset. It got to various stages of the boot up process but kept resting it self or sticking either at the bios msi splash screen and some times almost booted windows but said my c:/windows/system32/system file was corrupt and that I'd need to reload my recovery disk.
to make a long story shorter, I discovered that one of my case fans was not spinning, I pulled the power for it and then everything was fine again, for a week....
last night I loaded a new program and had to reset and the same boot issues happened, only somewhat worse, happened again. this time ocasionaly the splash screen was all distorted or it would prompt me that my bios checksum was invalid and asked to put my system floppy in. but on each power off or reset, it sometimes got past that but would hang saying my system file was corrupt again. I kept resetting it with different results and it eventualy booted and is now running fine though I am afraid to reset.
I have a suspicion my bios battery may be the cause? PC alert tells me my bios battery is at 3.10 volts? I went into my bios when it wasnt booting and everything looked in order there, even monitored my voltages in the system health section and all looked good with the excetion that my 3.3 voltage line seemed to fluctuate quite a bit. between 3.2 and 3.3 and is still shown to do the same in PC alert even though im up and running now.
could this be my bios battery? any help, or suggestions appreciated.

Sorry, I don't know much about my PSU other then its a generic 350W that came with my case. as my sytem is still running now, its dificult to get at the label to tell you more.
The reason I think its my bios battery or the bios prom is that I only have trouble at boot up time when the system needs to read it. Is their a bios diagnostic I can run while my system is up and running?
As I said in my initial post, I rarely turn my system off so both times I had problems the system was warm inititaly. On both ocasions I let it cool down after several attempts to reboot but it made no differance. The first time, I was sure that my psu was the issue for it booted clean after unplugging the stuck case fan. but when it exibited the same symptems the next time I reset, a week later, I'm not so sure any more. thats why I posted my concerns here.
I know that the stuck case fan could not have been good for my PSU and am prepared to replace it, I just feel that if it were my PSU at fault it wouldn't only cause me problems at boot up... I have been up and running again for several days now since that last reset with out any issues.
I have everything I need backed up now and will attempt to reset it again this weekend when I have time to play with it. Actualy, I think I'll just shut down and replace the battery first, I suppose it would be prudant to replace the PSU as well before attempting to power back up but then I'll never know for sure what was at fault if it works.

K7N420 Pro Shutdown problem

Recently my board is unable to shutdown properly. Its running XP which seem to shutdown OK but the CPU and case fan are left still running. Even pressing the off switch does not switch them off and I have to resort to the main power plug every time. When the board is in this state the D-Bracket LED indicator shows one LED "Boot Attempt".
I've upgraded the BIOS to 2.8 and replaced the boards battery with no luck.
Any ideas...

You've probly installed some type of software that is causing your problem...the system isn't shutting down anymore, it's trying to restart instead...
This is a rare occurance and a definite pain to track down...use msconfig to shut off any programs that are loading one at a time and see what happens when you reboot...you may have to reboot twice to see the results...

Having a MBPr late 2013 and having a sound problem the sound does not come tom the headphones even its all the way up and when i remove the headphones it docent come out the internal speaker either ? any idea how i fix this?

Hello. I've been able to play sound without problems through headphones or external speakers to date - the output always switched to these automatically until today. Now, sound output continues through internal speakers even if I plug in headphones or external speakers.
- I tested the headphones and speakers on other devices: they work fine.
- When I plug in headphones or speakers into the audio output port (I have verified that I'm not using the input jack) the devices are not detected and are not listed under the output tab in system preferences-sound.
I concluded from this that I probably had a problem with the audio port, so to test that I tried the following. I plugged a powered multi-USB device with ports for microphone line-in and headphone line-out into the USB port and switched it on. I verified that it was working by plugging a USB stick into the multi-USB device - this was recognised successfully, so the device was clearly working. I then plugged in headphones and speakers into the audio line-out on the multi USB device - but still no sound came through them (and tey were not listed among output devices) and the Mac continued using internal speakers.
What should I do? Does the latter test suggest that the problem does not lie with the audio port, or is my test not conclusive? What would you advise?

K7N420 Pro HDD-Problem

After a new Windows Xp installation my HDD shows no errors in the dosshell-application "chkdsk". But if I continue installing the chipset-driver (I tried the MSI and Nvidia ones) chkdsk shows the following error: "Wrong index list" and also "wrong memory-adressing", but no defect sectors(Sorry not realy correct expression, but I had to translate it from German.) Chkdsk says I should run it with the parameter /f to correct the failures, but this didn't work.
Sometimes the error disappears after some reboots, sometimes not.(I installed Windows Xp about five times; I also tried it with another IBM HDD[IC35L080AVVA07] and without the Zip-Drive on IDE1-Slave, but with the same result.)
Please write back a solution to my problem.

Are you really having other problems as a result of this error?
What file system are you using?
There is a ton of info over at Microsoft and even searching on google might give you more insight.
Jumper configuration and connector ribbons are not the cause for your error. I don't know too many people that run chkdsk, in fact I havent seen anyone use that in quite a while. Windows usually does that automatically anyway.
If you are getting stop errors and cannot continue loading drivers then that would be cause for some concern. If you have no problems during installation and performance is at acceptable levels then I would not really be concerned.
Perhaps someone with the same system and OS can try to run chkdsk as I am not at my XP station.
I have seen a similar problem when someone tried to install XP on the fat 32 file system.

I have Cq40-144tu laptop. i am't hearing sound from internal speaker but sound is hearing from headphone. I have configured my system many time. Last got to shop and they also format it and reconfigured but still this problem is showing.
But I was hearing sound from speaker when i chat in gtalk and then i heared sound from window media player and other application also for 5 to 10 second only. every time some text is recieved i hear sound for 5 to 10 second.

Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the iPod and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. K7N420 Pro Sound problems in Win98SE

When i do a clean install of Win98 SE and only install the nForce Drivers, on my K7N420 Pro BIOS v2.8 mainboard. (I tested the nVidia v2.41 drivers and the drivers from MSI v2.29) All media which is played with the Media Player is played too fast. I think this is a driver issue.
I tested with Windows XP, with the XP drivers from nVidia (v2.45) and there was played everything at the correct speed.
Is there a fix for the, I think, audio drivers or is there an other simple solution.

FinalCut Pro: lots of Sound Problems...

Hi,
i have several problems with sound in Final Cut Pro 6.0.2, i will try and list them all:
1: I had two mp3 soundfiles in my sequence that were on different tracks, and also had a different sample rate (44.1) than than the sequenz (48KHz). So i had to render them, but final cut would not render everything only one part of the overlapping region. The rest stayed unrendered, so i selected the soundfile again and hit "command-r". Now FCP rendered the other part of the region, that was not rendered before, but to my surprise the parts that were rendered fine the first time, now were not renderd at all! Any idea what i can do against that bug. I just cannot render everything...
2. Again i was working in a sequenz and pulled in the soundeffect "Impact Metal.caf" from the SoundtrackPro library. Had to render it, everything fine so far, kept working. But after a while the soundeffect got muted. It was still there in the timeline, but it made no sound. Even deleting the Audio Renderfiles and rendering it again did not work. Any way around this bug?
3. Normal sequenz, with video and sound. Also one sourround effect with surround i guess because it has 6tracks, also from soundtrack Pro. I want to solo one track of the sequence, but its not possible, why not?
4. I load an mp3 file into the sequence that has 44.1 khz as opposed to the 48Khz of the sequence. i render it, everthing is fine. later i grab the and of the soundfile and make it longer. So I have to render the rest of it too. Fine i do it, but now the beggining of the soundfile is different, as if i would have slided it to a different position, which i didnt... Any idea?
I am getting a bit crazy around here, to many bugs..

Do not use MP3s in FCP...and audio at 44.1k will also be a no no...so to have BOTH is a big no no. Convert ALL of your MP3 files to AIFF 48k 16bit stereo files.

To get music into FCP, it needs to be an AIFF file at 48khz, 16 bit stereo. So if you want a song from a CD, you go into the iTunes Preferences, click on ADVANCED and set this up under the IMPORTING tab:
AIFF
Sample Rate - 48.000 kHz
Sample size - 16 bit
Channels - Stereo
If you have an mp3 that you want to use, then you can convert it thru iTunes as well. As long as this is chosen as your import option, when you select a clip and click on the ADVANCED menu, CONVERT TO AIFF will be an option.
If the piece of music you want to use is something you purchased thru iTunes, I'm afraid I can't help you there. There are copywrite issues that prevent files from being converted into the format that FCP can recognize.

Macbook Pro sound problem... sometimes....

My girlfriend has a MBP with a Bootcamp installation with windows XP on it for "windows only" programs.
Macbook Pro
15" 2.4Ghz
2GB ram
2 partition hard drive (OSX and XP)
Windows XP SP2
However, occasionally we have been having problems regarding sound. Unfortunately, I do not know when it started as most of the time the sound is always off. It would either seem to have started when I installed Bootcamp 2.1, or after I got leopard a couple of months back and installed the new drivers, upgrading from the beta.
I had tried to reinstall the drivers from 2.1, and low an behold it worked, or so I thought. I believe the problem is intermittent, so it didn't actually solve anything. It would seem that the sound always works in Mac OSX, but only occassionaly in Windows. Was thinking of trying to install older drivers, but wanting to hear from the board first.
2nd problem
When the lid is closed and windows goes into sleep or something, sometimes when the lid is opened and the sleep is deactivated, the screen will not turn back on and remains blank while the system is running.

This morning i was not able to hear sound on my recently purchased macbookpro retina 15 inch model.My attempts to resolve this issue by going to system preferences and removing the mute box that was ticked as active. i had downloaded much earlier a mac version of logmein app and noticed that in the sound box noted above that there was a bar indicating that the default was now to logmein. i had never used this app. Why it started today, i have no idea. I moved the logmein application to trash and deleted the app , however it did not remove the default option which still blocked the sound.
Going to a macforum gave the tha anser that to remove the logmein app, it first had to be reinstalled a nd them use the uninstaller option ftrom the dropdown menu. for now that has resolved the failure to allow sound oputput.

Sound Problem in Final Cut Pro

I have noticed that when I export to DV format, my audio channels get all mixed up and I have no idea what to do. Does anyone have a suggestion or has anyone noticed this issue as well? If I export to iPod format, for example, I do not experience this issue.

I apologize, let me clarify. The first channel would play from a different point on the timeline and the second channel would play correctly. These two playing together creates a mixed up sound and they are too far off to "realign." I ended up just muting the problem channel. I have done nothing different from my usual workflow; the problem seems to have appeared from nowhere specific that I can tell.

No onboard sound- MSI k7n420 Pro after installing ATiI 9700 pro

I'm not sure if this has been answered previously.
I just installed an ATI 9700 pro on my MSI K7N420 Pro. Video card works great, but sound is absent after installing vid card.
In device manager shows yellow marks on nforce audio codec interface and nforce midi Uart. The former says: NtKern.vxd device loader for this device could not load the device driver. THe latter says: This device is either not present,, not working properly, or does not have all drivers installed.
I tried reinstalling the drivers using the windows files present in system, but nothing changed.
I'm not sure what to do next.
Any help would be appreciated.

Win98 - SE? Although this board (K7N420) works fine with Win 98 it can have driver issues (although, it's that long since I installed it - I can't remember what they were!). An upgrade to XP (Pro if possible) should be at the top of your Xmas list - then issues such as the one you're having should be a thing of the past
The card will work with DirectX 8 but as far as I know the 9700 is fully DirectX 9 compatible - so you should really install it as it enables more features.
You can find your BIOS version on the initial boot screen!
Have you any IRQ conflicts? - Check device manager.
Is PNP OS enabled in your BIOS? if so disable it and see what happens. Also Enable APIC! (BIOS)
