K7N420 + WinXP + Netgear RP114 = Network Media Disconnected

I'm using Cox cable connection at home. When I connect the ethernet cable through the Netgear RP114 Cable Router/Switch, I get an error message in WinXP saying that the cable is not connected. The link light on the Motherboard blinks once every second. ipconfig also shows media disconnected.
When I connect the cable directly from the modem to the motherboard, both the link and util lights are on (neither of them are blinking), but I get a 0.0.0.0 IP in windows XP. The "media disconnected" went away, but still can't get online because of the 0.0.0.0 IP.
Any1 have this problem b4 ? Any solution ?

i had the same problem with my nforce mobo. after i flashed back to Bios 2.4 on my mobo. when you use bios 2.5 or 2.6 on your msi 6373 mobo try flashing back to 2.4 !

Wireless not connected media disconnected

I have a Compaq presario with wireless & wired lan, running winXP sp2 and all latest updates. I have comcast connection, motorola modem, vonage phone, linksys router nr041 then a linksys wrt45gs wireless router. I have upgraded the firmware also. I can connect to the wired connection with no problems. I cannot connect to the wireless because I get the message "no connection". when I look in the ipconfig I see the message "media disconnected". Contacted linksys and tried their suggestions, the wireless router resetting, both router resets, both router and modem resets and no luck. I changed the settings to remove all security, disabled my firewall, changed the channel to every one from 1-11. Still no connection. Anyone got any new ideas?

My computer must be unique. I have a Broadcom. At any rate after trying for weeks I managed to get it running. I did so many things I am not sure what ones worked. What I do know is HP was the most helpful in solving the issue. After I downloaded a couple of helper files and a couple of upgrades, it popped right up there. I still need to secure it but I am going to enjoy what I have for a couple of days before I change anything. (Scared). I live in a rural area so not worried much about someone accessing it for a couple of days.

Thinkpad T40 Cisco Wireless Card 'Media disconnected'

Hi!
THis is a first time poster so hope you guys can assist
I've got a Thinkpad T40 that had HDD failure, on fitting a new drive and reinstalling XP Pro SP2 I now find that I cant get the Cisco wieless card to work.
It find networks but wont connect to any, on checking ipconfig/all it shows as the Media disconnected???
I've even tried another card...no joy same thing.
I've installed and re-installed the drivers loads but again no change.
Any ideas please???

Media=Disconnected concern

All this started because I needed to reset Email password(bellsouth) I was connected with a person from helpMeconnect.com He began walking me through steps to use the command line, once he realized I was familiar with ipconfig and such things progressed
a little faster.
With the command line open-ipconfig- we see media disconnected. We also see my IP addressed is being used by a foreign country(shared)
After running a full tree view on my IPaddress, he said I needed assistance by someone with level 5 security for Internet Protocol.
Yes, money is involved. $149-$300

What's the meanning?
With the command line open-ipconfig- we see media disconnected.
Media disconnect should have been there before unless you disable IPv6 if not that is there be default in your OS. Media disconnected has always been there for the interface that is connected like your wired network connection.
If your could connect to Internet, please ignore it.
Don't forget to set your IP address and DNS Address as "obtain *** automatically" as below guide:

If it doesn't help, please post your ipconfig /all outout in your next reply in order to analyze better.

Step by step on how to add tc to existing netgear wireless network please

Hi,
Please can someone give me a step by step on how to achieve a working wireless network with a netgear DGN2000 router providing the network, my TC available for back ups / itunes library & an airport express to connect a usb printer into the network?
Currently have following:
ADSL Internet connection into Netgear DGN2000 Wireless N Router/Modem
TC
Airport Express
Macbook Pro (running Lion)
iPad (running OS5)
iPhone (running OS5)
Windows 7 laptop (personal)
Windows XP laptop (work - so locked down on installing new software)
USB Printer
I did have it set up but think went a bit wrong and used TC as creating wireless network - and could no longer use work laptop over VPN - so have reverted back to netgear only.
Please could someone give me / point me towards a blonde friendly step by step on how to set up my network so everyone is happy?!

Suggest that you start by configuring hte AirPort Express to "join" the wireless network that is being provided by the Netgear router.
In order to do this, you must provide the AirPort Express with the exact information that it needs to be able to join the network. This includes:
Name of the wireless network
Exact type of wireless security that the router is using
Password for the wireless network
I'm sure that you know the name of the wireless network and the password, but do you know the exact type of wireless security setting that the Netgear router is using? You may need to get into the configuration pages for this information.
Hopefully, it will be WPA2 Personal, or WPA/WPA2 Personal, which the AirPort Express can match. If you see something like WPA-PSK-TKIP or WPA-PSK-AES, then things get more complicated, likely requiring some trail and error.
Once you have the wireless security settings in hand, you are ready to follow Apple's step by step setup for the AirPort Express using the AirPort Utility application on your Mac.
When you have the Express configured, you will already know how to setup the TC, since it will be configured exactly the same way with the same information.
This assumes that you want the TC to connect using wireless only.
It would be much easier to setup the TC to connect to the Netgear router using an Ethernet cable. You will be able to backup to the TC using the Netgear wireless network. Can you consider that option?

I am sure that it get disconnected because I check the router traffic from another MAC and it get disconnected.
No mother if its connected by cable or wifi, it get disconnected.
In Energy Saver properties "Computer sleep" is set to "Never" and "Display sleep" is set in "10 minutes".
"Wake for network access" is checked but it will never work if network get disconnected.
"Automatically reduce brightness before display goes to sleep" is checked
All the other options are NOT checked.
I hope someone from this community can help me with this issue.

will the time capsule act as a media server for my apple tv or will it just back up my files? Looking for a good network media server thats not to pricey?

The only media server that will work with the Apple TV is iTunes on a computer.

Try to use devfsadm -v to find the device
Then use ifconfig dnet0 (not positive this is the right syntax for SMC) to plumb the device.
Then use ifconfig dnet0 192.168.50.4 up
You may have to modify these files to get the IP to come up on startup and properly resolve:
/etc/hostname.dnet0
/etc/netmasks
/etc/resolv.conf
/etc/defaultrouter
/etc/nodename

This may sound silly but try your date a time setting my ipod had the same problem and i had even checked the the date and time went all the way to the apple store for help and the genius guy just rest the date and time and it worked just fine.

How is Apple TV differ from those network media receiver on the market?

Don't get me wrong, I love apple products, just wondering why does everyone so excited about apple TV?
So basically what it does is just stream the content from your computer to your TV, right? So function wise, it's just same as those network media reciever. Like Sony VAIO RoomLink Network Media Receiver (VGP-MR200), or some other product like it (Can't think of a brand right now). Right?
Am I missing something? Can someone explain to me is apple TV falls into same category as network media receiver or is something totally new and innovative?

Well... It really isn't anything new but what is so cool about it and why everyone gets excited is because of the ease that it takes to get it to work.
I bought one today, came home, hooked up, synced my content, and then kicked my feet up and watched Wedding Crashers.
My wife called and asked me to rent "The Guardian," I didn't want to get up from my movie and go to Blockbuster, so I just went over to my iMac and bought the Guardian.
It took about 45 minutes to download and then it was automatically synced to our Apple TV.
We are about to go watch it right now.
That is what makes the Apple TV such a great product and it's only the beginning!!
Just wanted to give you my view of what I think sets the Apple TV apart from the rest.

Connecting Time Capsule to existing Netgear wireless network

Hi, hope someone can help please?
Have a MacBook Pro and Time Capsule. Want to use TC just for wireless back up with Time Machine. I'm trying to connect it to my existing Netgear wireless network. I've been through the set up process with Airport Utility. It can find the TC on it's own default Apple network, but when I select add to existing network my Netgear network is not showing from the drop down menu (but my neighbours networks are). If I type it in and add it manually the TC restarts but just continues searching for network (flashing amber) and does not connect. I have administrated my Netgear router to allow access to the TC's airport ID and I can't think what else to try.
Can anyone help please?

Hmmm.
There are several IDs for the TC. AirPort IDs and an ethernet or MAC address.
If you have a dual band TC, there are separate AirPort IDs for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. I'm not sure if the TC can join another manufacturer's network at 5 GHz, but it should be able to join at 2.4 GHz.
Is that what you entered? If you entered this ID and it does not connect, then try the MAC address of the Time Capsule. I don't have one handy at the moment, but I'm pretty sure the MAC address is on the bottom of the device. The AirPort ID should be there as well.

Loss of mapped drive, networked drive disconnects

I'm running Win7 ult x64. I am running on a network with 4 pcs, 2 vista, 2 xp. We have one server running 2000. I have mapped a couple of folders on the server and can connect just fine when I first start my pc. But after awhile the connection is lost. It still shows the drives, but not the connection. This internet works fine and access is controlled through the server. I can restart my machine and the drives will be connected and working as they should. But after some time they will disconnect again. Win 7 is acting like it is losing the connection to the network, because I can't map another drive from one of the other PC's unless I reboot. But the internet access is still working fine. Any ideas?

Here is what I have found. This is a problem with Windows 7 and nothing else. After several test and looking at forum after forum. here is what I came up with.
I have 3 machines. 1 (XP) and 2(Windows 7 recently loaded). the 2 machines that I loaded Windows 7 (fresh) were both XP. The 1 XP machine that is still XP for this post I will call File_Machine (because this is where I hold my files and
map to from the other machines.
1. When my other 2 machines were loaded with XP I have no problem with mapped drives. No dropping or reconnection problems.
2. I load Windows 7 on 1 of my machines and start noticing when I would shutdown or logoff it woudl hang at the log off screen and the only way to shutdown is a hard shutdown. I knew it was related to a network connections not closing or something
but could not isolate it.
3. Installed Windows 7 one the other machine (oohh by the way 1 is Windows 7 Ultimate and the other is Professional). I started experiencing the same problems with this machine mapping back the my File_Machine.
4. Saw a post referencing the idle network connection disconnect feature in the Windows Operating system.. so I looked at my XP machine (File_machine) active sessions.
5. I brought both windows 7 machine online and let them restore the network connections to the XP box. after being idle for a while the sessions dropped because they were idle (this is normal and by default). ok fine.. no problems there.
6. here is the kicker.. when I went back to either Windows 7 machine and clicked on the mapped drive, it hung and would not reconnect to the share. the share is fine and active. The problem is the Windows 7 is not sending the correct signal to
the system housing the share to reconnect.
7. To confirm this I ran the following command on the XP (File_machine).. NET CONFIG SERVER /AUTODISCONNECT:-1 (this command disabled the autodisconnect feature in a network connection is idle).. the (-1) represents the duration to wait before disconnecting.
-1 is to disable.. I believe the number range is from 0 to 655555 or something.. representing seconds.
8. after the was disabled there were no more dropped connections.
9. set the number to 1 and tested again.. and the problem came back..
What does this say.. Microsoft needs to look at Windows 7 reconnection attempt commands for idle connection and see what signal is being sent to the resource to say wake up and reconnect me because it's not working..
Hopes this helps everyone and Hope MS reads this and looks into it.. You know have the info on how to recreate the problem.

Z77A-GD65 Ethernet Problems "Network Cable Disconnected"

I've been running a Z77A-GD65 and have been having network problems with the onboard ethernet. Every time I go to play a game online I'll play for about 10-15 minutes and I'll be disconnected. When I'm back on the desktop, my ethernet icon on the taskbar will show "network cable disconnected" even though everything is plugged in fine. Fiddling with the cable or changing the cable does nothing. Reboot the machine and it's working fine until again I play a game for 10 or 15 minutes and the same thing happens.
First, the card was showing the wrong MAC address as specified in the MSI FAQ for this mobo. Performed the fix but the problem is persisting. Tried the MSI driver and the newer Intel one. One time I got a "Code 10" error as posted in another thread and again, wouldn't correct itself until I rebooted.
This only happens when I'm playing games. Web surfing or downloads work fine and my connection won't be disconnected until about 10-15 minutes into playing an online game.
I put in another discrete Intel network card and that worked fine. No problems. Same with plugging in a USB wifi adapter (my current temporary solution). Therefore, I'm thinking it's an issue with the onboard ethernet or driver. Anyone else with this problem or how to resolve it? Using the latest v10.5 MSI BIOS.

Removing the Asus Xonar did not help.
Re-flashed the BIOS as well using a DOS boot USB key instead of M-Flash. Readjusted all setting to default. Enabled/disabled "Network Stack" in the BIOS (what is this supposed to do anyhow? It's undocumented).
Wiped all drivers for this network adapter and re-installed the current ones from MSI's website. No change.
Noticed that the adapter would correctly run at gigabit full-duplex when set to auto-negitiate. However, it would drop down to 10mbps before it finally showed "cable disconnected". Plugging and unplugging the cable did nothing until I reboot, then it would work again... until I ran a game online and it would disconnect after 10-15 minutes of play. Ran the Intel cable test and it was fine (and the cable and internet has been fine when used in conjunction with another discrete PCI-e Intel card).
Re-crimped the ends to be sure. Tested again and the cable connection is good. Yes I know how to crimp ethernet so please don't suggest anything being wrong with the cable.
I've pretty well nailed down that it is an issue with the onboard ethernet. I've read on Intel forums about problems with this chip on Asus boards. Hopefully an MSI employee can point me in a direction that could help, or at least have the problem resolved in a future BIOS update.

Cannot enable wi-fi device (Netgear WNA3100) network connection although message is 'enabled'

I am using Microsoft driver for the above device. Drivers loaded ok, device manager seems to think it's fine. Device seems just fine (blue light flashing as it should). Anti-virus/external firewall (Zonealarm Exteme) etc all shut down (to find problem).
Primary ethernet connection disabled. Network and sharing Center (Change adapter settings) allows me to enable, says enabling, then enabled, however it never changes status and remains disabled.
Netgear driver (latest for win7 64 which I use) installs fine until final part 'detecting adapter' which fails - never gets there and needs to be forcefully terminated. I've removed the Netgear software entirely.
I've changed USB ports and done just about as much as I can. From a management point of view I hate windows7. To get to simple information it is far more difficult than previous OS's. As an example, I have no idea how to get my OS version number. I know
it is Windows7 64Bit Home edition but thats all I can say.
The network adapter works perfectly under XP-sp3 and this is dual-boot machine so hardware is obviously identical (apart from SSD boot for Win7 and HDD for XP).
Any help appreciated - or any questions I can answer to help me out!

Its a bit old thread, but I want to update it with my (Netgear support actually) solution
to this problem.
Here is my question to Netgear support (10/29/2011 12:32:00 PM):
1. Windows 7 sp1 64-bit
There is a problem with the driver for this, I have tried so many different things now, but no result.
When I install the software/driver for WNA3100, when it ask me to connect the WNA3100, I do but it doesent find it...
In Windows device manager it looks fine, but in network connections its only de-activated, and I cant activate it.
I have tried to instal the driver from CD, from internet with windows update, and I downloaded driver from Netgear support (WNA3100_v1.1.3.22_Setup.exe) but always same result, FAILED.
I also googled this problem, and I see many others having the same issue with Win7 64-bit.
Is there a new driver comming soon, or should I return this?

We just tried the installation on win 7 64 here ourselfs, so please try the following:
1. Uninstall the software on the adapter by pressing Start- Programs- Netgear- choose uninstall.
2. Uninstall the drivers of the adapter (when it's connected to the PC) by pressing Start- Control Panel- Device manager- Network cards- find the adapter and choose uninstall.
3. Disconnect the adapter from the PC.
4. Open the link below:

Mark "show all version" and download "WNA3100 Initial Release Software Version 1.1.2.16"
5. If you get an error message in the installation go to Start- Control Panel- Device Manager- Network cards- Double click on the adapter- Driver- Upgrade driver- Search automatically for updated drivers.
In step 5 you need an internet connection so please use a wire to get internet in this step.
When this is done you should be able to finish the installation.
If this doesn't work please let us know and we will help you further!

Netcfg will not setup static IP with media disconnected

The title says it all. If I don't physically have my network cable plugged in, setting a network profile with a static IP fails. Also, there doesn't appear to be a setting for subnet mask.
Please help, without this functionality I'm stuck back using Windows with netsh scripts, which I'm really trying to get away from.

Ok, it's not as bad as I thought. At least once you have the static set, if the media is temporarily disconnected, it does't drop the static setup like networkmanager does. I think I can live with this setup, although it would be nice if you could set the static ignoring the carrier signal.
