K7T PRO2-A regulator issue

For a few weeks I have had the famous voltage regulator problem with my K7T PRO2-A board.
Everything began when I was playing a freeware game. Suddenly, the system locked up. Monitor went dark and nothing could be done.  I put the power off.
Then, I searched the net for information and found out that the problem might be related to the voltage regulator. Several times I tried to boot the computer but with no success -- it went off after about a minute every time.
Because I'm no expert at hardware, I brought the box into the local computer repairer. After a couple of weeks being in a queue he diagnozed it and claimed that there's nothing wrong with the mobo, it's the CPU that it's broken. Well, I told him to change it.
Next two weeks the system worked well. But then, suddenly during gaming (again) everything went off again in the same way as before. The day after, however, it managed to boot. I thought that it was just something temponary.
Yesterday it happened again. I was about to install a new operating system but during partitioning(!) the mobo locked up. I rebooted many times to the old OS and it couldn't stay up longer than a few minutes. Today I tried again and it stayed up for 15 minutes.
Today I contacted the Finnish importer of MSI's motherboards. Luckily, they told that I can come to their office at any time to get a new mobo of the same model. Well, that's good, but...
Could it be so that the mobo has broken also the CPU again? Or could it be just the mobo that is broken this time? It would be of no use to get the mobo changed if it has already broken the CPU.
I'm a poor student... The former hassle when this first time happened cost me 200 euros (new CPU + repairing work).
Please, help! I know that there are some good HW experts here.   ?(

Hmm...  My power is powerful enough, I had it changed some time ago. It's about 330W.
The symptoms of my case are the same as in other messages where I've read about this.
1. Suddenly, after a short time of heavy CPU usage, the monitor goes off.
2. Nothing works, the power ventilator can be heard and the led of the master CD-ROM drive leaves to be on.
3. If I try to restart the computer at once, it won't 4. reboot. But after some time, when I try, it stays up for some time.
4. I have to wait hours, in the current case even days to get my computer back to stable.
I'm pretty sure this is the voltage regulator problem since my mobo is almost 2 years old and it hasn't occured before. At least everything seems to refer to it...

  • K7T Pro2 Ver:1 (MS-6330) Capacitor problem

I'm working on a computer for a friend.
It has a K7T Pro2 Ver:1 (MS-6330) motherboard. The Chhsi 2700uF 6.3V capacitor at c172 appears to have failed. The other Chhsi 2700uF 6.3V capacitor at c171 looks ok.
These caps are along the side of the AGP slot. The failed cap is nearest the memory banks.
I did a search of the forum and found a similar problem at:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=49478.0
Does this board have the same voltage regulator problem?
If I replaced the caps, how long might they last if the regulator is questionable?
Should the caps be replaced with a higher value cap, ie 2700uF 10V?
I have the equipment to swap out the caps pretty easily at work, but would it be worth it?
Can the voltage regulator be tested easily?
    Thanks for any help.
    Paul

    Hi,
I'd definitely replace any other caps of the same brand and value, and probably any others of the same brand. Make sure they are low-ESR types.
I replaced about 20 caps on my K7N420 board a few months ago, and all but a couple of them had gone bad by then. I also had to replace four transistors which I think were part of the memory voltage regulator circuits. Boards made in the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2002 are probably the worst affected, as they were loaded with capacitors which had faulty electrolyte.
As for whether it's worth repairing, or just upgrading? In my case, it cost me about $20 (Australian) for the parts, and a couple of hours of my time, so it was cheaper than paying say $100 or so for a new mobo (and then wanting to upgrade the CPU, and the memory etc.) If I had had to pay someone else to replace the parts, it probably would not have been worth it. The other thing to consider is the impact on the environment. It's more environmentally friendly to do a simple repair on a mobo than to throw it out and replace it. But eventually, the urge to upgrade will become overwhelming. So it's a matter of personal judgement.
    Cheers

  • Strange sound problem on K7T Pro2-A

    Hello,
I have this problem with my onboard soundcard (playing mp3's, cd's, ...):
at normal speakerlevels i can't hear any music, but if i turn my volumeknob way up, i can hear it very faintly.
I checked everything i could think of: the speakers, cabling, volumesettings, reinstalled drivers (soundcard is still detected by WinXP), installed the Audiodrivers from viaarena.com, checked biossettings...
This problem started when i (temporarily) changed my floppydrive for a Zipdrive. I changed the bios just to get rid of the error there's no floppydrive, but nothing else.
I left my case open after i placed the Zipdrive, and because i read on this forum there were some issues with onboard sound & grounding, i closed it again, but to no avail. Now i'm running out of idea's.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    I have a K7T  Pro v.1 BIOS v.3.0, Duron 1200 Mhz with VIA 4 in 1 v.4.38.
i have had some serious problems recently, including the death-led's. After reading the thread in the old forum about the problems with the MS-6330 series I'm getting pretty nervous about the future of my poor MB.
But what i've been wondering about is wether these problems might have something to do with the AGP port and using heavy 3D graphics. I have read that several users have provoked failures when using 3D-screensavers.
My problems seemed to start when i installed an MSI G2mx400 AGP card (replacing a Cardexpert SiS 6326 8Mb PCI card). Using the DirectX Diagnosis tool (v. 8.0 and 8.1) my machine crashes on the 3D-tests. I've also tried an ATI Rage 128 16Mb AGP card with both Win2k and WinXP with exactly the same problem.
After finally getting the four red-leds I tried replacing the CPU with a Duron 600Mhz, but nothing happened so I guess the advice about doing that somewhere earlier in this post doesn't always work... Eventually i managed to wake the system by shorting the CMOS.
After this rescue I have replaced the AGP card with my old PCI card and it seems to be working fine so far. So after all I've been reading about the bad/overheating chips and capacitators and so on, I'm thinking maybe the AGP card could be one of the causes of this?
It would be interesting to hear if anyone has experience with the failure rate of AGP vs PCI...

  • Capacitors on MS-6330 (K7T Pro2-A)

I've had the K7t Pro2-A motherboard since 2000, the capacitors seem to have gone bad.  From what I have read on the forum, it seems that many people have had this same peripheral shutdown as I get.  What I would like to know is where I can get the capacitors because MSI won't give me an RMA because they say my warrenty is up?  The capacitors that have gone bad are the two by the AGP slot.  They are aluminum radial single end 2700 microfarads, 6.3 volt, -40 to 105 degree celcius.
I also read this was due to the voltage regulators.  Is there a way or a specific way I should have my voltage set in the BIOS.  I have an AMD Thunderbird 1GHZ processor with an Enlight 250W power supply.  If anyone could help me, that would be great.

  • K7T PRO2-A crashes in XP?

    Hi all,
    specs:
    msi k7t pro2-a
    radeon 64M ddr vivo
    xp pro
    512m pc133 (2 x 128 & 1 x 256)
    300w p/s
right now, this is my setup:
    latest 4in1s
    latest catalyst radeon drivers
    all xp updates
everytime i run 3d games, the pc locks up and i cant get back into the os.  I just end up ghosting a clean image.
ive read posts that this m/b shouldnt even use the 4in1 drivers, instead, use the ones supplied by xp.
I have checked the obvious, such as ram and the power supply at 300w should be enough.  The system temps are also fine with zero overclocking.
Note:  using the same hardware under win98 had no problems whatsoever.
    any ideas out there?
please post or reply to syatar at rogers dot com
    Thank you!

    Hi all,
i was reading up in the msi forum, searching for a clue as to why my pc
    would crash
for no reason when running 3d games, and found an interesting post:
The fix is simple:scrap the board and buy a new one. Before the old
forum went down, there were over 5000 posts about the pro2a and this
exact problem. It is a bad voltage regulator on the board that overheats
and causes all kinds of problems. MSI was RMA ing the boards back
then.but this late in the game,I doubt you have any recourse, except to
replace the board. This is also the reason that I joined the forum way
back when. It's too bad that the old posts weren't available, you could
see for yourself just what other people went thru. The posts original
name was How long before your Pro2a dies?Fortunately,all6330 series
boards are not created equal as my TURBO2 V5 3.2 bios boards are the
    best boards MSI ever built.
I got this board back in may/2001.
Do you think I have one of these shot boards?
If so, what would be a great replacement for an athlon 1.2 100fsb?

I have a K7T Pro2 (MS-6330) that has been working fine for two years and now it won't show anything on the moniter.  I have checked the moniter, video card, and ram with my other computer and they all work fine.  I have replaced the power supply and it is working fine too.  The Smart Led were red green green red but are now all red.  I don't believe it is the voltage regulator I hear so much about because it never gets hot and it does's shut down.  How can I tell if it is the mother board or the processer

Are you sure you finger-tested the temp of the correct chip?  It is the SC1155CSW chip next to the PSU connector that you want to check.  Given the history of the original K7T series, chances are the board has failed.

  • K7T Pro2A (MS-6330) Boot Problems

Well, my computer seems to have died on me. When I try to reboot, first I get no response, just the DLED signal red red green red (0010) which the manual says corresponds to "keyboard may be damaged or not plugged in properly". So I reset the keyboard (it's the logitech wireless) and I can get it to start booting up (I see the Video card info followed by the memory test). But then it just stops and gives me the red green green green (0111) which the manual describes as "Assign IRQs to PCI devices" and under possible problems says "Stop". And the computer just sits there. Then I have to repeat the entire process, including reseting the keyboard.
Also, I can't enter setup, once I hit DEL it just goes locks up at the 0111 error.
Can anyone provide any info? Thanks in advance.

    WIN 98
    384MB RAM

I think the Bios is ver 2.9 but I can't be certain.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Oh, and does anyone think I should try clearing the CMOS and rebooting?
I think this is the right forum for this...

    Hi,
If the board is still under warranty then I would RMA it as these have Voltage regulator problems that fail after a while.

  • MS-6330 Lite K7T Pro2 Ver:1 with GeForce FX 5200, does it works?!

    Hello...
I have one MS-6330 Lite K7T Pro2 Ver:1 and it Support AGP 2.0 1x/2x/4x, and I want to buy a GeForce FX 5200 that works for AGP 8x...
Question, this GeForce FX5200 will work with my MotherBoard (that supports AGP 2.0 1x/2x/4x) ?!?!
I think that´s no problem, and i´ll not have ALL the features that the board offers, but will work... do you guys know about?!

    extracted from http://www.answers.com/topic/accelerated-graphics-port
    Quote
AGP cards are backward and forward compatible within limits. 1.5 V-only keyed cards will not go into 3.3 V slots and vice versa, though "Universal" slots exist which accept either type of card. AGP Pro cards (rarely used) will not fit into standard slots, but standard AGP cards will work in a Pro slot. Some newer cards like nVidia's GeForce 6-series or ATI's X800-series only have keys for 1.5 V to prevent them from installing in older mainboards without 1.5 V support. The graphic cores can only handle 0.8 V for AGP8x and 1.5 V for AGP4x and will be damaged by 3.3 V slots. Some of the last modern cards with 3.3 V support were the nVIDIA GeForce FX5000-series and the ATI Radeon 9500/9700/9800(R350) (but not 9600/9800(R360)).
to answer your question, that card will work in your board

  • K7T-pro2 not boot with radeon 9200SE

    Hi,
I have a problem with a radeon 9200SE (128MB ddr). The sistem with this VGA card don't boot. When I turn on the pc, it emits 3 beeps (one long, two short) and the screen is blanck. I have just read other thread but I don't think that is a PSU problem. This are the values of my PSU:
    OUTPUT    300W MAX
    Orange: +3.3V 14A
    Yellow: +12V 10A
    Blue: -12V 0.5A
    Red: +5V 25A
    White: -5V 0.5A
    Purple: +5 VSB 3 A
    Model: WS-300P+P4
In the video card box these are the system Requirements:
Intel Pentium 4/III/II/Celeron, AMD K6/Duron/Athlon/Athlon XP or compatible with AGP 2x(3.3V), 4x(1.5V), 8x(0.8V) or Universal AGP 3.0 bus configuration(2x,4x,8x)
If I take off the radeon and I put my old TNT with 16MB Ram the pc boot perfectly.
    These are my system components:
    MSI K7T Pro2 ver. 1.0
    Athlon 750 MHz
    256 + 128 MB RAM
    Sapphire radeon 9200SE
    DVD-ROM
    CD-RW
    10GB IBM HD
    20GB Samsung HD
    Sound Blaster Live
    Dlink DFE-538 10/100 fast ethernet
    Dlink pci usb 2.0 controller
My previous pc had the same components with a ASUS P2-99B motherboard with a Pentium III 500MHz and all worked fine. The ASUS chipset was an intel 440ZX with AGP (1x,2x) and the PSU was an AT 200W (sorry but I don't have any other info about the old PSU).
Please help me, and sorry for my bad english!!
    Gabri

    Thanks for the replies.
In my motherboard there is not card near the AGP. The memories are 256MB PC133MHz and 128MB PC100 MHz. All the system but with motherboard ASUS P2-99B with intel chipset 440ZX and 200W AT PSU with +5V 20A and +12V 8A worked fine. I also tried to change BIOS setting but nothing happened.

  • K7T Pro2 and MSI TI4200: Please HELP!!!

    Hi
I have an MSI K7T Pro2 motherboard. I got few weeks ago a new video card: MSI TI4200.
After the installation in the case and power on of the PC I can't see any image. The monitor remain black without signal. I can hear one long beep and 2 shot ones.
    I tried the following workaround:
    - Reset CMOS
    - Set AGP to 2x
    - Disconnet all peripherals (audio card, nic card, cpu fan, usb peripherals)
Looking on the forum someone suggested could be the PSU so I have replaced it with a new one with the following specifications:
    DC Output: 350W
    +3.3V: 20A
    +5V: 35A
    +12V: 16A
    3.3V & 5V: 175W
But still does not work!  ;(
Bios on the motherboard is updated at the latest release.
Please help me. Do you have any idea?
The funny stuff is that I decided to get an MSI video card to avoid incompatibility with my MSI motherboard so please MSI don't betray me!
    Thanks
    Mario

    Diabllo
I forgot to write that I tested the video card on my brother's pc and it works fine. The nice stuff is that my brother has a 350w PSU with 165w combined 3.3v+12v.
The difference is that he has a newer motherboard not MSI.
    Thanks
