K7T Turbo2 shutdown

I have a K7T Turbo2 motherboard with a duron 1.3 GHz processor bought as part of an upgrade package about a month ago. Lately, the machine has been shutting down after a period of time. The video shows a black screen with a white square in the middle. Input activity will not wake it, I have to reboot. Norton antivirus is installed and there a no driver issues.
any advise? Thanks.

Hi Patty,
This Thread belongs in the VIA Forum since the K7T has the VIA Chipset, I will move it over there. 8)

  • K7t Turbo2 Shutdown Temperature Issue

    Hello All, noob question:
I use my computer mostly for playing games.  I play Warcraft III, Dungeon Siege, and JediKnight2 mostly and while I am playing sometime or another my computer will reboot in the middle of the game.
From reading the manual under the PCHealth section I assume this has to do with the Shutdown Temperature setting reaching a certain point and rebooting my computer to save it from frying my components.  I have a standard case with two fans in it, thermal grease between the cpu and the heatsync but other than that I have limited knowledge of anything else that may contribute to this problem.
The first thing I tried was replacing the video card which stopped Warcraft III from rebooting but caused both Dungeon Siege and JediKnight2 to now reboot.  I changed the resolution in Warcraft III to a higher resolution and now it reboots too.  This confirms to me that it is a heat issue.  What should I buy or do to alleviate my problem?  Thank you so much for all your help in advance.
    My components are:
    AMD Athlon 1800XP
    MSI K7T Turbo2 Motherboard
    512MB PC133 Ram
    Volcano 5 Heatsync
    Nvidia Geforce2 MX 400 64MB & Riva TNT2 Turbo 32MB
Seagate 20GB 7200 RPM hard drive
Texas Instruments IEEE 1394 Controller Card

    Hi!
Well, it can be a heat problem, it could be a problem with your PSU also ...
About heat: from the list of components, I do not see a clear reason why there should be a heat problem - it all looks pretty normal to me  :]  Do you have any idea about the temperatures in your system? Temps can be readin BIOS, but more convenient with the program MBM 5 which can be downloaded at http://www.livewiredev.com.
I think (not sure, though) that temperatures of the video card can be read with a program called rivatuner - it can be downloaded here.
About the PSU: can you tell a little about brand & specs?

  • K7T Turbo2 V5.0 Cannot Properly Shutdown

    Hello everyone,
The thing is that "Power" button on my case doesn't work for me properly. When I'm just booting the machine, the moment I press the power button the whole system freezes (the hdd led remains on, power led goes off, fan is on, disks are on, monitor is on, boot screen is on). When I press it again, system reboots.
Many of you had the similar problem before... I tried most of the suggestions... Nothing worked for me.
When in WinXP, the moment I press "power" button, system performs the shutdown, but after the drives arу off, monitor is off etc, cpu fan remains on.
Many of you will say that my PSU is not good enough. The same PSU works wine with the same config, same cpu with Abit K7T 1.3 though.
Actually, I've been able to shut down properly once. I had my machine turned of (with the I/O switch on a PSU) for quite a while, and I cleared out the bios settings. But after the machine remains on for more that a few minutes, "power" stops working.
    Please help.
    Configuration:
    K7T Turbo2 V5.0
    1Gb PC133 RAM
    AMD 1700+ Athlon XP CPU
    Realtek 10/100 PCI LAN
    Gforce2 GTS-V
    Athlon XP certified 300W PSU
    Windows XP Pro, SP1

Where did you get the CPU from and do you know for sure it was pulled from a working system? eBay, and no... :(
Are you 100% sure you have Turbo2 & the OPN on the CPU itself is AXDA2600DKV3C? Yes, I visually see them with my own eyes.
You did clean base of HSF and use fresh thermal compund/grease when installing CPU & HSF/cooler? Yes.
I assume it still works with the 1800+? Yes, using it right now.
Recheck power connections and make sure the plugs are fully seated (ATX 20 pin, JPW1 square 4 pin) I'll check that the next time, probably tomorrow.
Is PSU +12V more than 10-12 amps? No idea what you're talking about here...

Just got this new setup. I have K7T Turbo2 Athlon 2200+ and 256Mb pc133 ram. Every now and then the pc will just automatically just shutdown and reboot itshelf. Just comes to a complete halt. Its usually when their is alot of cpu usage. But sometimes their isnt any cpu usage. Most of the times it does it is high cpu usage. I dont have any device conflicts in windows or anything like that. Im using a Rexus 400watt powersupply with p4 connector.

  • K7t turbo2/amd XP 1800! ack! help!

i recently bought a k7t turbo2 (ms-6330) to go with my amd xp 1800, im running 2x 512 and 1x 256 ram under winblows ME. and ever since day 1, i have random lockups when i try to move or copy files in windows, but if i use dos-prompt i can transfer files just fine...  also when i try to shutdown or reboot i get error from windows.   i have tried underclocking the cpu, swapping out the ram... i have installed all the most current drivers for everything and i am clueless what else to try...   i got a 300w amd certified psu, 20gig maxtor along with a 20gig seagate for drives.  i have disabled the onboard sound as well as the printer/serial ports... i run bare bones windows setup with no junk in the backround... have 3 case fans and amd certified cpu fan so i have eliminated temp problems, it happens whether the machine is warm or cold... i even tried upgrading the bios to 3.5 to no prevail...   i have no issues running any of my games from halflife to quake to diablo to everquest...  other than these 2 isuues, my systems just blazes with no issues...
    any ideas?

Yank out some of that ram, like the 512k stick and then try it out . ME doesn't need all that to function. BIGDADDY51CT.USA

  • K7T Turbo2 (MS-6330) Booting problems

Last night, I installed an Athlon XP 1700+ on my K7T Turbo2 mobo. I can not boot into Windows now. Windows XP will hang on loading up mup.sys, and 98 resets at an indeterminate time. I cannot install Windows 98 or XP either, as both hang on the setup (Before I can even access recovery mode for XP). I've swapped out all my PCI devices, disabled nearly everything in the BIOS, etc... nothing good. Heres what I've got.
    Athlon XP 1700+
    K7T Turbo2 Mobo
    ATI Radeon 9000 128mb
ATI Radeon 7200 32mb (Secondary Display)
    Creative Labs Soundblaster (Live!)
1280 Megs of PC133 RAM (PNY)
    Linksys 10/100 PCI Ethernet Card
    Maxtor 60GB HD 7200
    Maxtor 12GB HD 7200
    Seagate 10GB HD 5400
    Buslink 52x24x52 CDRW
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Do I need to set my FSB to 133 so I can use the 1700? I have updated my BIOS to the latest version. How would I increase the FSB?

    Welcome
Shutdown and remove jumper J17 (see manual - jumper near ram slots). If no boot, clear CMOS and try again. Be sure to use Fail Safe Defaults for install.
You've got a really heavy load, and hope your PSU is up to it. Do you have at least 200-220 combined watts on +3 and +5 circuits of PSU (see PSU label or maker's site).

  • K7T Turbo2 & heatsink clip

Came across an interesting problem/solution while rebuilding a system for a client, FWIW.  They had been experiencing random errors with increasing frequency for several months, including Windows registry errors on boot, I/O errors, garbage error messages onscreen, temporary screen freezes and lockups, and then the system finally died completely.  I ran through the usual troubleshooting steps and found the motherboard and CPU were bad (I'm guessing power surge but who knows).
Installed a new K7T Turbo2, new Duron 1.3 and new (quality) power supply.  I reused the old heatsink/fan from the dead Duron 900, cleaned and applied thermal paste as usual.  System would boot fine, then freeze, or show various hardware errors during POST.  After shutdown and a long period of cooling off it would boot as normal, then freeze and go into POST errors again.  I knew I had installed everything properly, but I took another very close look at the heatsink and found that it was somehow tilted ever so slightly in relation to the CPU, even though it otherwise appeared to be installed correctly.  This tilt was so slight, there couldn't have been more than a few millimeters of dice that weren't in contact with the heatsink.  In looking even closer, I discovered that the heatsink clip had a bend on one end which was closer to one end of the clip    /~___~~\   than the bend on the other end.  After reversing the clip, the heatsink then seated properly and the system is running fine with no errors.
I'd never run across a heatsink clip that had only one proper orientation, nor did I realize how critical it is for the heatsink to absolutely, positively have total and complete contact with every last bit of the dice in order for the system to boot!  Sorry for the length of this post, justed wanted to throw this in, in support of the troubleshooting guide in this forum, and also to vent my frustration at having spent several hours trying to figure this one out.

on good coolers the bar is not removable
another clue on one were it will fall out is there is normally only one end has the clip for the screw driver and this should go towards the top of the cpu socket, and be on same side as step in the coolers base

  • K7T Turbo2 and Athlon XP 2400+

    Hello everyone !
I have a question about K7T Turbo2 motherboard and BIOS update.
Here it goes:  I reacently bought Athlon XP 2400+ and installed it on my mobo.
But after reboot my PCU wasn't recognised and I read on MSI website that I had to
upgrade my BIOS from 3.5 to 3.6 ( I think, don't remmeber the version ) . So I did that too
and this time bios showed my CPU as XP 1800+. I said there is something wrong with CPU or
they gave me a wrong one, but NO. After reading the manual I realised that that XP 2400 uses
266 insted of 100 ( standard that came with mobo )and that I had to remove J17 jumper to make it
work and also had to change options in BIOS --> like FBS 133 and multiplier 15  to get XP2400.
Reason that I'm expling what I did is to let you know what stuff I did before I came to this forum to
ask a Q. Anyway after all of that fuss PC works and shutdowns OK. But ( yeah there is a but ) now insted
of starting at once I need to press power button one time -> and you can here power starting and lights
showing but system not starting. Then I push and hold button for a few sec to shut it down. After
second push of power button system starts as normal. It looks like it need a bit of warm up ( like my car in winter time ) before it actuali start. Is this a BIOS error becouse it can't start the system with ONE
push of the button? Never had tha problem with Duron CPU and old BIOS. Need some help ..
    Thanks

    Hi!
I think I solved your problem! It seems that I had exactly the same problem and the same settings you have. Then, I read this Trouble Shooting Guide at:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threadid=1131&sid=
    which says:
"As for mulipliers with AMD CPU's, just set them Automatic, as they are hardcoded on the CPU themselves and will allway's be correctly, even if if you think the BIOS doesn't know it."
So I changed the multiplier from BIOS from 15 to Default, and now it starts up great even at the first time! Even my CPU benchmark score with PCMark2002 free went up from 5195 to 6344 so now it actually works much better than with the multiplier 15!!
Try this before buying a new PSU and tell if it helps...
    Regards,

  • Installing XP Pro on MS-6330 (k7t turbo2)

Im having oodles of problems installing Xp pro (and even win 98) on my computer.  My current setup is:
    K7T Turbo2 (latest revision, with 3.5 bios)
    Athlon XP 2000+
    40 gig maxtor hd
    hercules gamesurround fortissimo 2

    standard keyboard
generic 512 pc 133 sdram (tested with various memory test, including mem86 or whatever that was called, hehe) no errors, works perfectly
Problems arise when installing xp pro (and xp home) when at the point where it says: starting windows ... then either it reboots, blue screens, with errors like: page fault in non page area, or usb.sys or something, so ive disabled usb, etc etc...
I already tried swapping out everrything from video to sound, etc, those tricks DO NOT WORK.  Already tried using various settings in the bios, already tried mem timings, setting agp to 4x, or 2x, auto, manual and EA, etc... nothing seems work...
The only thing that DOES work, is disabling the internal cpu cache..why? BEATS ME?!?  After its done loading hte main stuff, Im going to reinable it and see how it goes.. im tired of problems, I like the mobo, but Was having problems from the get go installing xp.. im reinstalling it now, since i was getting errors like irq_not less, that thingy there, and then stuff like ntfs error on a bsod, etc.  Installed the 4 in 1's, 442's then 443's, didnt work...psu isnt really an issue, has 220 tco, and runs fine, hard drive is not damaged, neither are the other optical drivers, and im just at my wits end.. this is really starting to tick me off..
emailed msi tech support, nothing back yet... can someone PLEAES HELP!?!?  What bios settings should i use for xp pro installs and stuff?? lemme know! Thanks!!! And should i REALLY reinstall service pack 1?  any thoughts on this??

WEll shite, now i gotta kill 98, cause now  IT aint even working...... this board sucks!  Im having more problems than a ECS mobo on a good day.
Now what, ive stuck my voodoo 3 in, and im fudgin with the settings, but quite frankly, im sick of all this, if it dont work, its going back and that pc shop is gonna fix this
and heres that farking problem with xp now..

  • K7t Turbo2..Do I have a bad one?

Am new to the forums and MSI, but have been building and repairing 'puters for a few. Have a new K7T Turbo2 MS 6330 bios v 3.4 My question is: Is this a bad MBO, or is it in need of a bios update or something?
THE PROBLEM: Incomplete POST, stalling with no detection of a primary master hard drive (master slave is not connected at this time). Statement at stall is hard drive failure.
    SYSTEM BUILD: K7T Turbo2 Board 6330 Bios v. 3.4, AMD Athlon 900 mHz, (3) 256K Mwave memory, 430W Antec TruePower ATX12V True 430, 40GB IBM ATA 100 7200RPM or 8GB Seagate ATA 33, 3dLabs 4x AGP 32MB VX1 Oxygen, Smartlink 10/100 NIC, onboard audio, Creative Labs 4X CDR
    NEC Zip100, Mitusmi Floppy
DIAGNOSTICS: Tested the HD and IDE 80 pin connector in another system. They were OK. Tried an old Seagate 8 GB ATA33 with no alteration in MBO response. IDE cable is connected to the MBO blue connector with the blue primary IDE connector. The first or master connector at the other end is attached to the HD. Tried HDD jumpered as a master and cable select with no alteration in response. The secondary IDE devices (CDR and Zip100) do detect in the POST. Tried disconnecting the secondary devices from power and the MBO- no alteration in response at POST. I'M STUCK
Any thoughts or suggestions on this mess?
    Sharon

HI It seems like you have pretty much covered all the bases. One other suggestion, Did you try to reset ESCD in bios? You seem to know pretty much what you are talking about. I have had both my TURBO2s for about a year now and both perfornm excellent but I am using 3.2 and 3.0 bios Escd resets the bit string and reconfigs the rig. Its located right under the Pnp line in bios just enable save and exit and try to reboot If it works, you will get a success on the bottom of the 2nd or third boot page. My older build has a WD drive going bad and once in a while I get this same no detect. When it does happen I just shut down by P/s switch.and turn it back on. You might also want to try a new cable as it don't take much for a poor connection .I hope this helps and if it don't rma the board as I don't think  you left much out could be a bios chip going bad or something about 3.4 as that was for support of a 160gb drive and may be causing you some grief. Best of Luck,BIGDADDY51 CT USA edit: What are you getting for an led message when the stall occurs ? This may help with your diagnosis.

  • New BIOS for K7T Turbo2

I just downloaded the latest BIOS from your site (W6330VMS.360) and was planning on installing an Athlon XP 2600+ CPU.  I was expecting to see a CPU multiplier of 16 available in the BIOS settings but it only goes up to 15.  Can I still install a 2600+?  What would the multiplier be?

    Hello,
should be x16 Multi. i can't see manual selection for x16 multi too.
    in BIOS description: -Support AMD XP 2400+ & 2600+ (K7T Turbo2 only)
i have checked inside and confirm that 2600+ ratting exist(323630302B@00009EA0)
i guess you should leave/setup "CPU Clock Ratio" to Default(not to override/force custom values), BIOS will ask CPU for his default multi by vid and should apply correct one.
    think should be fine

  • K7T Turbo2 - how do I tell BIOS to boot from USB?

I have an old K7T Turbo2 system, and I'm trying to install Windows 7 on it.  I guess that's my first question - am I going to run into any nasty problems running W7 on this board, other than RAM limitations?  I have a version of "Tiny7" (which installs from CD-ROM) installed already and it seems fine, but I'd rather run a fuller non-pirated OS, and that means installing from a DVD/iso.  I don't have a DVD drive installed and it would be a bit of a pain to acquire one, so I'm hoping to boot from USB to winstall W7.
I have a PCI USB2.0 card installed in the system, which seems to work fine.  I've set the BIOS to boot from USB-FDD (but I've also tried USB-CDROM and USB-ZIP).  I have BIOS 3.6.  I've tried booting from the PCI USB2.0 hub (will that ever work or does the BIOS not recognize it?) and from the regular USB1 port on the mobo (but my USB flash drive is USB2).
Is there something else I need to do in the BIOS to get this to work?  Will it never work no matter what I do?
I read somewhere about a BIOS setting to "enable legacy USB support" but can't see anything like that in my BIOS settings.
    Any suggestions?  (thanks in advance)

If there is no option to boot from USB-HDD then it may never work.
Long shot I know, but what if you connect your USB drive, then power on your system, and press F11 when the logo/POST screen appears, does the drive show in the Boot Menu that appears?

Really? DVD drives are very common, and cheap as chips! You can pick up a brand new DVD writer, for the price of a (good) DVD movie.

  • K7T Turbo2 and new Athlon 1700

    Hello!
I have a K7T Turbo 2 motherboard with an AMD Duron 1200, which ran fine. I recently purchased AN AMD Athlon 1700+ so that I could take advantage of the 133 FSB on the board rather than the 100 FSB of the Duron.
The first thin I did was flash the Bios to version 3.4. I then removed the J17 jumper on the board to run at 133fsb. When I first restarted the computer, everything seemed to be fine. Then I started to receive an error message that stated “Pagefault_in_nonpaged_area” and had to reset. Sometimes I received the message after a full boot and others while booting and became more frequent. At one point I needed to reset the power supply because the reset was not working and I then received a boot error that told me that system files are missing or corrupt. I have had this problem before and had to reformat after a power failure reset my system.
Next I tried to reformat and reinstall Windows XP Pro and started having problems there. I am ready to start over and would like to ask for some advice or see if there is any known issues or conflicts with my setup. I also have Powerquest Drive Image and have an image from about a month ago. Do you think that it would be feasible to use it?
I am running an AMD Athlon 1700+ on a K7T Turbo2 with 768mbs Kingston PC133 Ram, 2 Maxtor 40g hard drives, 300 watt Allied PSU, Radeon 7200 32mbs Graphics card, 56k modem, Satellite internet.
    Thank you,
    Hank

I finnaly got the Athlon 1700 to work. It seems that my Cd Rom drive lens was dirty and I had the "crap in, crap out" syndrome. It was not the power supply nor the Ram, it was faukty software that was read by a CD Rom that I have not cleaned in 3 years...lol.....a recommendation, clean your components ofter.
I am yet to see the final outcome, but so far no crashes. I set up a dual boot, Win 98 and XP Pro machine now and seems to run great thus far.
I apprecate all of your help and input in this matter!
    Hank

  • K7T Turbo2 Post problem

Hey all, first time here. I am trying to fix my son's computer for Christmas. His old mobo went dead and I picked up a K7T Turbo2 at the local shop. Details below:
    K7T Turbo2 mobo - Award BIOS v6.00PG (W6330VMS v3.7)
    AMD Athlon 1.4
    2 x PC100 128MB ram
AGP GeForce4 MX (tried Rage 128
    WD 40GB hdd
    Standard 52x CD
    Macron PSU 300W
When booting the first few times, it acts like it wants to boot, gets through post and tries to access the hdd - but never gets to any MS booting screen (XP loaded on hdd) - screen just goes black. I turn it off and back on and it gets to the point where it does the HDD check and freezes. The diagnostic LED stops on #1 red and the rest green (manual says boot attempt, but it hasn't even done a hdd check yet). I take it down and back up again several times. Sometimes the LEDs stop on #2 red and the rest green (manual says floopy init).
I took the board back to the shop and got another with the same results. I have tried different AMD 1.4 (from a known working PC), different PC100 128MB sticks and PC133 256MB sticks. I've tried booting with only minimal parts attached (no hdd or cd) with the same results. The only thing I can think of is the PSU is not strong enough. I've tried plugging in the little 12V piece and not using it with the same results. HELP!!!!  Tomorrow is Christmas and my son is going to be very disappointed. TIA!
    AirGator

Just wanted to say thanks for all the help. I foud the problem though. It was a faulty CPU. I know that I had swapped it out with my working AMD 1.4, but for some reason, this one would die once any load was put on it. I took my wife's 1.4 out and the mobo booted.
I just went out to ZipZoomFly (from Pricewatch) and bought two new AMD Athlon XP 1800+'s for $48 each. Hopefully they'll come in quickly and I can get my son's PC back to him before the end of his Christmas break. Thanks again all!
