K7T266 Pro and Tbred cores

Hey everyone,
I have a good ole K7T266 Pro ver. 1 and I just bought a new processor after my old one burned up in an unrelated computer.  I check the msi website a few months ago and saw that the Athlon XP was supported.  Unfortunately, I didn't know things had changed since then and there was a difference between .18 and a .13.  And, of course, I didn't find out there was a difference till after my order shipped.  The proc I recieved was a 1.5v 1700+ 266fsb.
I've seen the other posts about the K7t266 Pro2 RU but I don't know if that info can relate to my board anyway.  My BOIS does allow for voltages down to 1.55 (or 1.57) and it is a 266 board.  It seems like it should be able to run it but no luck so far.  I'm hesitant to try anything to the processor because I haven't heard from AMD if they will just trade me a .18 for the .13 that i have.  If I knew on that, one way or the other, it would be cool.  Of course my motherboard has been out of warranty for some time, so thats free for modifications.  When i insert the new processor it doesn't register with the mobo (i.e. the D-LED is in the red, red, red, red state).  I don't let it sit for too long but nothing appears to get hot and the proc stays cool.
If anyone has any insight to this it would be greatly appriciated.  Thanks alot.

By the way, I have the built in RAID on my board.  Also, my PSU is rated at 300W with 3.3v@20A and +5V@30A.

    There should be no problem.

  • K7T266 Pro and XP200+

I tried to upgrade my K7T266 Pro with an AMD 2000+ CPU and was unsuccesful.
I first upgraded to BIOS version 1.8 (which the MSI site said would allow me to use this CPU) and then installed the CPU. I heard what sounded like the BIOS trying to Post, but no video showed up on the monitor and the system just stopped.
My system worked just fine when I re-installed my old 1.2 GHz processor.
    Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Good question. I saw nothing listed on the package and I had trouble trying to track down that information on the AMD web site. I was under the impression that all 2000+ XPs were palaminos, but your question intimates that that may not be the case. If you know of a direct way to determine if the CPU is a palamino or not I would be grateful for the information.
I went through the very thorough checklist that Bas had posted (great effort on his part) and everything cleared, including the power supply unit. I guess all that would be left is an incompatible core.

  • What is the diffrence between K7T266 Pro and Pro2?

What is the diffrence between the pro and the pro 2, besides the pro2 being red and having the link lights. Upto what CPU and what type can the pro 1.0 handle? Also, can it be moded to fit a better cpu? Anyone know?
    -Nick

    Pro has the KT266 chipset
    Pro2 has the KT266A chipset
KT266A has improvements that increase performance, and the Pro2 can be modified to fit Thoroughbred CPUs.
The Pro (KT266) can only accept up to the Athlon 2000+ palomino.  Also, overclocking the FSB disables USB; this was fixed with the KT266A.

  • MacBook Pro and Intel Core 2 Duo?

    Hey there everyone,
It is great that Apple is announcing the Intel Core 2 Duo, but when would it be available in the MacBook or MacBook Pro?
I am starting school in January and would like some time to use my new MB or MB Pro, but don't want to make a decision to buy and have the next gen processor avail next week...
The special with the free iPod Nano or reduced price iPod ends September 16th. Why are people waiting until next Tuesday, September 12 to make any purchases...I hope no bombshell will be dropped on everyone.
I was totally prepared to get my MacBook or MacBook Pro tomorrow, but VERY hesitant now.
Any advice? Am I making a big deal out of this? Will I EVEN notice a difference between the Core Duo and Core 2 Duo?
The main reason I am not buying a MB Pro is the heat issue and yet the Core 2 Duo is predicted to be cooler...
    Help!!!

    Wow great advice so far!
I was never into forums and discussion boards, but since I was buying a Mac again (the first was an LC II...for those who remember) I thought I would check the discussion board...yikes! Great one way, but information overload on the other.
TRUE there will never be a better Mac and to buy for what you need at the moment. Heat being a huge issue why I haven't purchased a MB Pro, it now seems as if the Core 2 Duo will not run much cooler which is a HUGE purchase deciding factor for me. The MacBook seems to run cooler for sure.
If I get the Core Duo MacBook/Pro with Tiger, can I upgrade to Leopard when it comes out in spring? Will they be compatible as I am not sure what 64 bit processors really do?
I can definately wait until next Tuesday to make my purchase, but I will only have until the end of next week to get the education special with the iPod at a huge discount...of course Apple is clearing stock for new iPods surely. The 30 gig video iPod ends up costing 115.00 CAD...can't beat the price that's the thing.
Since heat is such an issue for me with the MB Pro this means I will be leaning towards the white MB and it SEEMS unlikely they will be upgraded as they only came out in May/June.
All I want is to say I am on top of the computer game at the current moment (if possible) even if it only lasts 5-6 months. I am upgrading from an old Windows ME system, Pentium III, 128 Mb RAM, 733 Mhz processor...about 6 years old. My how much has changed since those times.
I am really not trying to make this decision difficult on myself...really!
You all are great for providing some great advice!

  • Refurbished Mac Pro and Intel Core Dual??

    Quick question...
I got a refurbished MBP G4... can I upgrade to the Intel Core Dual? How would I do that and would it be spendy? I really want it!

    Glad you weren't offended.
Sometimes it's hard to sort out "kids" that are looking for the latest and greatest that don't fit their needs and just want mommy and daddy to buy them a 2K laptop because their friends have it.
Still keeping things constant, if I were you I would hold onto that Powerbook G4 as long as physically possible. If you do truly want to upgrade to the Intel Processors I would wait at the minimum for the release of Leopard in 2007 so that you don't waste money down the road in upgrades. This will also guarantee that you have the best computer for the time.
You may want to read a very beneficial post about the new Core 2 Duos here, something regarding the 64bit technology which may really only be 40bit, so you may even want to hold off even more.
The bottom line is that the Powerbook G4 is still a great machine, and can still be rendered very useful until a newer OS and newer release of the MacBook Pro line is out.
As I said before, there is no "upgrade" program. It would be financially stupid for a company to do that. It's not like cars that lose only a % of value when they're bought - computers basically retain no value once purchased. For instance, check eBay - there aren't many computers in "like new" condition for over $500 because the industry moves so fast that you may be able to get "brand new" with many upgrades for $600.
I think you need to really list your needs down on paper - and see which fits. A top of the line Mac Book may suit your needs and will still come in at a lower price then a bare bones Mac Book Pro (or about the same price)
The nice thing about the Intel processors is that you can install windows if you need it. Some people that need it all the time could even slip in a nice big HD and run equal partitions.
I personally try to stay as far away from windows as possible, but still have 1 or 2 programs that haven't moved to have mac support. For this I still use a desktop PC.
Last - Keep in mind that the Macromedia stuff won't run well on Intels yet, so another reason to wait if you will use their Dreamweaver programs.
Good Luck, and sorry for the blunt post earlier...

Have a new 64 meg geforce4, mx440 that, when installed gives 2 beeps plus 10 beeps during POST, and  monitor, stays in s/by. Will occasionally boot...show 16mg video in boot, then hang...sometimes reset will see 64mg video in boot and starts up fine. A system shutdown then restart, will often lead to POST beeps and no picture.
Running BIOS 3.2, but 32 meg card is fine.

Ok, I won this board from AMD a while back.  This board was a promo to show off their new Athlon XP cpu's.  I'm like, COOL. WRONG.  So far this board has FRIED 2 XP 1800+ cpu's. Currently the board is in the hands of the MSI RMA dept., who will take approx 7-10 business days to determine whether the capacitor that EXPLODED, can be considered a board defect. This makes RMA #3.  Now by a show of hands, who here thinks this model is defective???
Now MSI has great customer support, but, merely replacing broken products with the same model that is prone to the same problems, is not.  All I asked was for MSI to not ship me a replacement K7T266 Pro, and instead ship me a K7T266a Pro.  Not an unreasonable request being that both boards are pretty old.  But noooooo, MSI can't do that.  So far this FREE motherboard has cost me over $300 in CPU replacement costs.  And they cant send me a board that costs less than $100???!!! Yea, um, ok , thats the biggest load of crap I've ever come across.
I would love to hear your thoughts on my little perdicament.  Oh, and heres a pic of the latest boom:
    Blown Capacitor
    Electrolyte I'm guessing
And for you Forum admins, if you can do anything to help me out in this, I would really appreciate it.
A pissed off, most likely not gonna be a repeat customer no more,

    Hi,
The CPU fan header dies when you put a High-speed-fan to it....
    Happens on many boards!
As for the Cap, I also never seen any explode like that....
Most of the time the entire cap goes in the air with only leaving 2 pins behind and somepaper rubbish....
    Very strange.....

I have a motherboard as specified in the header. Now, I am not very good at computers, so I have been unable to find out what is the most powerful CPU this motherboard is able to handle. It says in my user's manual that 1400MHz is max, but someone told me that it can take more. Is there a difference between the k7t266 pro and pro-r? Can anyone please help me? I would be really grateful.
Also, my bios version is AMI v. 1.9 if this is important.

Your wifi problem sounds very much like the problem I had. The wifi would drop out, the icon showed it was still connected. If I turned it off, I couldn't turn it back on. Another user here pointed me to the problem, which was the wifi cable (the flat cable goint from the card to the motherboard). I found it on ebay for $13 and it's been running fine since I replaced it. This is the repair guide for your machine. The part number will be on there if you click the link.

  • K7T266 Pro R and Geforce 2 GTS problem

Hello everyone. I have been experiencing a problem for some time now regarding lockups and crashes caused by my video card, which vary in severity depending on the driver version used. Since I'm using an MSI K7T266 Pro Raid mobo (version 1) I thought I'd post my question here.
The exact problem depends on the driver version. Using any Nvidia Detonator drivers at version 40 or newer, my system becomes extremely unstable. On first booting everything seems fine, however if I try to open my Geforce display properties the Windows freezes during the redraw of the display properties window, which goes blank. Sometimes I can call up Close Programs Dialog, which shows DDHELP in the list, and [not responding]. I've never actually gotten an error message from DDHELP or any other error message -- perhaps the computer jams too hard for Windows to get one up. I've seen reports around the Net about DDHELP problems from things like DirectX 8.1, but they're never quite like my problem. The problem is identical on DirectX 8.0, 8.1, and on 9.0.
No matter what I try to do in Windows with these drivers installed, the computer will lock up in seconds. For example, if I then open IE 5.5, I might be able to get as far as a page or two before the similar thing happens: during the window redraw the computer locks up (usually with a blank or partially-redrawn window), sometimes causing the mouse to lock and sometimes not, and then if I can get the Close Program Dialog open DDHELP has appeared and is Not Responding.
The most stable driver version I've found so far is 29.42, which does not cause the lockup above and never causes DDHELP to appear. However, it is quite unstable as well, and causes Windows to lock up sporadically during 2D window redraws in various programs. For example, when calling up a Save Document dialog or when opening a pulldown menu the program will lock either before any of the redraw becomes visible on screen or when the new dialog box is "skeletal", only partially drawn. Sometimes the crash is severe enough that I have to do a cold restart on my system.
The other problem is that sporadically garbage blocks will appear in portions of my screen, like old windows and color bands popping up that do not refresh. This often happens to me in Photoshop 6, and happens usually when I'm scrolling down a window or something.
These problems with version 29.42 all appear to be 2d window-drawing related. I do not have any problems with 3d games with 29.42. However, the new reference drivers are so unstable on my system that I can't even try to open them.
With 29.42, the most stable drivers I've found so far, some kind of lockup due to redrawing windows almost always occurs within an hour (sometimes minutes) of booting up.
For what it's worth, dxdiag tests just fine.
I was hoping someone could help me figure out what's causing the trouble, what driver I should use, and how to resolve it. If possible, I'd really like to use the newer drivers as I've been told they're much faster. In any event, I hate having such an unstable system where lockups could occur at any moment!
Here's the lowdown of my system:
    -MSI K7T266 Pro Raid [1] mobo (MS-6380)
         AMIBIOS date: 5/1/2001
         VIA 4in1 drivers version 4.45

-256 meg PC2100 SDRAM with 266 mhz FSB
         2.5 cas latency
-AMD Athlon 1.33 gb with 266 mhz FSB
    -Asus AGP-V7700 (Geforce 2 GTS) 32 mb
AGP 4X, Fast Write enabled, Aperture size 128 mb
current drivers: Nvidia reference 29.42 (also 40+)
on IRQ11 (shares with my Ethernet card)
         BIOS version 2.15.01.14
    -Windows 98SE
-DirectX 9.0 (also tried 8.1 etc)
-Soundblaster Live! 5.1 on slot 3, drivers from 5/2002
    -Viewsonic PF790 monitor
    -C drive is 30gb Western Digital 7200rpm, FAT32
-D drive is Raid 0 striped array, pair of 40gb 7200rpm
-Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet Adapter on slot 5
-no memory resident programs on loadup except for WinPoET, Explorer, Systray
If there's anything I've left out that could help, let me know!
    Thanks to anyone in advance,

Are you talking about my mainboard or graphics card memory?
Here's what I've got set under Advanced Chipset:
    Configue SDRAM timing by: SPD
    SDRAM Frequency: HCLK
    SDRAM CAS# Latency: 2.5
    SDRAM Bank Interleave: disabled
    SDRAM 1T command: enabled

The above is what the bar says. It's been a while and wondered, maybe Apple changed the format for forums. Then got this nice big blank canvas to air my concerns. Went to school for Computer Science, BSEE, even worked at Analog Devices in Newton Massachusetts, where they make something for apple.
The bottom line is fast CPU = more FPU = more headroom and still can't figure out why the more cores= the slower it gets unless it's to get us in to a 6 core then come out with faster cores down the road or a newer Mac that uses the GPU. Also. Few. I'm the guy who said a few years ago Mac has an FCP that looks like iMovie on Steroids. Having said that I called the campus one day to ask them something and while I used to work for Apple, I think she thought I still did as she asked me, "HOW ARE THE 32 CORES/1DYE COMING ALONG? Not wanting to embarrass her I said fine, fine and then hung up.  Makes the most sense as I never quite got the 2,6,12 cores when for years everything from memory to CPU's have been, in sets of 2 to the 2nd power.  2,4,8,16,32,64,120,256,512, 1024, 2048,4196,8192, 72,768.  Wow. W-O-W and will be using whatever I get with Apollo Quad.
Peace to all and hope someone can point us in THE RIGHT DIRECTION.  THANK YOU
