K8 Neo Platinum High Temps lock ups.

Ok, just got this board and processor, I flashed the bios, and still my temps are 60c at idle and 76c at load. When it hits 76 my computer freezes for 8 secs, then resumes for a few min. then freezes again. I have the 3200 newcastle, 6800gt, 1 gig of ram.
Someone help me before I send this board back. Also, I put the vantec iceberg on the NB and hooked the fan to the NB_Fan and it doesnt show the temp or fan speed in core center.
It will even freeze in the middle of 3dmark01 then resume.

Reach inside the case and touch the HS with your fingers. At &&c you would feel it is very hot. If not then it is the usually problem that the temp is not being read right. Newcastles are known for this as they changed the sensor diode inside the CPU and the MB is not reading the temps correctly now.

  • MSI 865PE Neo-L high temp readings?

    Hello..
When my system is off for a couple of hours and then i boot up my system, and go directly into the bios,my CPU temperature is already 40-45C° !!! :O
And even my cooling block isn't hot then(not even warm).
Also in windows with the MSI software i get those high temperature readings.
Only with speedfan, the temperatures are more normal.
Is this a know issue that MSI boards have high temperature readings  ?(
    CPU is a P4 2.6Ghz FSB800
    (system is not overclocked)
    Thanks in advance! :D

ok,first of all thanks for the reply's guy's!!!
    My system specs :
    MSI 865PE NEO-L (duh :D )
    P4c 2.6Ghz FSB800 with boxed cooler.
    Maxtor 30GB 7200RPM
    2x256 DDR400 ram
    GF4 TI4200 64mb
    Q-tec 400W dual fan.
    DVD drive (lite-on 16xdvd ,52cd-rom)
    CDRW drive(lite-on 52-32-52)
As said, with corecenter or other MSI software almost directly 45C° Even the heatsink is not warm then.
    (stressed 58-60C°)
Speedfan gives me more then one temp..
HD0 : 23C° this should be the harddisk temp i think.
Temp1 : 29C° this should be the system temm or case temp.
Temp 2 : 42C° this should be the CPU temp.
All these readings are IDLE temps.
And i think those are the wright temps...
    (ps,sorry for my bad english,if you don't understand something,please ask  :D )
And Naviblue, nice overclock you got there!

I have read that there was a known problem with some Maxtor SATA HD's that require you to get a special driver from Maxtor to get it to work properly.  I had the same thing happen to me when I bought a Maxtor 200GB SATA.  After 2 weeks of trying I just took it back and bought a WD instead.  After installing the WD I read about the driver.  Try contacting Maxtor and see if they can send you the driver (or whatever software it is) that you need.
If you are talking about the problem putting a Maxtor/Seagate SATA II drive on a motherboard with a SATA I chipset, it isn't a driver problem; it can not be fixed period. It is also not a firmware problem, unless they found it within the last couple of weeks.
Also, the original post said this is a SATA I drive. There were no such problems with a SATA I drive on a SATA I motherboard.
As to the original problem, I have had something similar. Unfortunately, I didn't really find a good solution. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the way Windows assigns the numbers to disk drives when Windows first loads. The new drive can take the drive number that is supposed to be the boot drive. Windows then looks for the operating system on the new drive and it isn't there. It is on the old drive, which is the boot drive.
Knowing why doesn't help much, I know. Sorry I don't have the solution.

  • K8N NEO Platinum Temp readings

Well I just got all my parts for my new college build and everything went together fine. I'm using an MSI K8N Neo Platinum with an Athlon64 3400+. I'm also using the Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu all copper heatsink, btw that thing is a monster :P
Anyways I boot up 1st time with no problems suprisingly and go into bios to set everything up. But when I look at the Pheonix Bios page for computer status with tempatures and things it shows wacky temps. With the mini lanboy case with 2 120mm fans and a fortron PSU with a 120mm fan and the zalman heatsink i wasn't expective anything above 40C.
The Bios is displaying ambient as 44C 114F, and 65C 150F. I know for a fact ambient is no higher than 85F and i took the sides of the case of and the air inside seems to be cool. Should I be worried about this or try and get a diff prog to monitor temps. or maybe try and flash the bios. Everything else is in tip top shape, just wanted to check on this before I went trying to install the OS.
I forgot to add I'm using Artic Silver 5 and i spread it on good and then used a business card to spread thin, I also check the contact surface before put on the HSF for good and it was fine.

You can use winflash which is included with MSI live update (look in c:\Program Files\MSI\Live Update 3\FlashUty\Award). Many people advise against flashing your bios within windows for safety reasons. A floppy is the more conventional and possibly reliable way, but if you shut down all programs (especially firewalls and virus checkers) then you should have no problems flashing within windows (I don't have a floppy either, have flashed several times using winflash over the past few weeks and no problems). I have never flashed using a bootable CD so I can't offer any help there.

And I checked the site and they only had the v1.1 Bios should I look somewhere else for beta Bios versions.
Version 1.20 is available on Live Update but do a search in this forum and you will find v1.32 and v1.33 betas.

    Hi all,
I have run with the above hardware specification since Jan 2007 without experiencing any hardware problems at all. Two weeks ago I upgraded the CPU from an E6700 dual-core to a Q9550 quad. I was a little concerned about doing this, because the P965 supports a max FSB of 1066 and the Q9550 is rated at 1333. In any case, I Googled around and found that some flavours of the Q9550 had been tested on my mobo (http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-MSI/P965_Platinum_(MS-238).html) and also MSI list the Q9550 stepping C1 as being compatible so I took the leap.
Early indications were good - Vista detected the new chip and I rebooted when prompted. However, in the space of two weeks I have experienced  around one or two BSODs per day STOP 101 or 124 codes. Hmm!
I have switched back to my trusty E6700 chip and the system is then as solid as a rock. I see 3 possibilities here:
1.The Mobo website (MSI P965) lists the Q9550 stepping type C1 as being compatible. There is no mention of E0 or C0 which seem to be the other two variants. I have no idea which stepping type mine is as the product numbers for the Q9550 chips are all the same (EU80569PJ073N or BX80569Q9550) regardless of whether it is a C0, C1 or E0 stepping. Is there any way to tell which on I have - I tried with CPU-Z but didn't spot the stepping type? In any case, could this be the problem or am I off-base?
    2. It's possible I have a faulty chip. How likely is this do you think? I could ask for a swap with Novatech but could be back in the same boat, and they will reject the return unless it is 'proven faulty'.
    3. I need to mod the clocking on my rig to support the Q9550. If so, can anyone advise on what I should do?
I doubt the problem is caused by an OS factor as I ran some tested in an XP pre-boot environmet and still got the lock-ups.
What should I do? i don't really want to ebay the chip at say a £50 loss if i can help it.
    Many thanks in advance.

No, the OEM Order Code is different, and the sSpec Number also.

  • K8n neo2 platinum lock-ups

Hello everyone, well here is the deal, I ust built yesterday my first amd64 system, specs are as follows:
    amd athlon 64 3200+ Clawhammer
    512mb ddr400 (single stick)
    120gb sata drive
    1 dvd unit, 1 dvd-ram unit
geforce 3 ti 500 (i know, i have to replace it)
    soundblaster live! 24-bit
    stock case psu
Before that, i had the same config but with an athlon xp 2600 + witch an msi k7n2 delta2, it worked fine. But this one, as soon as i start gaming the game will randomly slow down to a crawl and then lock-up the pc... I used to have this same problem with a kt4v which i replaced thinking it was gone bad, though i did notice on that board the 3.3v line was quite faulty, well same thing is happening here, at least i think
If i leave Corecell opened while gaming, the game will suddelny minimize, corecell will pop-up with an alarm and show about 2.8-29v on the 3.30v line... now before i go out and spend some money on a new psu, I need to know if this could be it ? or could it be the old gf3 acting up?
As i said, this same thing used to happen to me with an old kt4v paired with my old athlon xp 2600+, it stopped happening when i switched to the k7n2 delta2 but here it is back again...
    help please!

Well I´m back, meaning that my lock-ups are back
Although this time I think they're not voltage - psu based... all my voltages are on their normal conditions, temps are doing just fine, I can even game with no issues, the problem is my computer is randomly locking-up
I have read and re-read this post, Because I am having the same symptoms as this guy did, just random lock-ups , no time interval, the conditions cannot be reproduced , so Im guessing its either
    a) hardware
    b) bios settings/bios
More info: I upgraded my bios to syar's moded 1.A, turns out I'm running on a Venice 3200+ (not clawhammer as I stated before) ... Cnq is disabled, so is spread spectrum, so is aggresive timings, no dynamic overclocking, no fast writes, no sideband addresing, memory timings are at the manufacturer's specs, no overclocking whatsoever, fsb 200*10 , htt 5x...
Just so u know, the computer has been powered on for the last couple of nights downloading and It runs fine idling, but when i start surfing, or doing whatever it will lock up on a random time/condition basis (it hasnt locked up yet while gaming though)

  • PSU causing lock ups when gaming? K9A2 Platinum

I am having black screen and occasionally grey screen lock ups when Im playing games. It can happen within 10 minutes or up to an hour. I have to press the power button to restart and dont get any windows errors or blue screen. I have no issues when watching videos or just tooling around. My PSU is a OCZ600MXSP and Im thinking its not up to spec. I have everything running stock. Is it likely my PSU doesnt cut it or is the black/grey screen freeze thing an cpu/gpu overheating issue?

All of my drivers are up to date (I do use driver sweeper as well). It happens pretty much in all games, from BFBC2 and TF2 to some crappy kid game my son plays online (Wizard 101?). Im not sure what the temps are under load but at idle they are good (cant recall what exactly they were but were in the proper temp range). My monitor has just finally died as Im typing this on my laptop (bad caps on power board  ) so Ill test the temps while gaming when I can hook it up to my big LCD.
Could the lock up with no blue screen/error report indicate a component overheating?

  • P7N SLI Platinum lock-ups

    My specs:
    Q6600 stock speed
Kingston HyperX pc8500 2x 1gb. I manually set it to it's rated timings, voltage and frequency. I have also tried different ram, from Exceleram and it makes no difference.
2x Asus EN8800GT 512mb cards (tried using just one card too, tried switching to a different 8800gt card from sparkle too, no change.)
HDD: Have tried several hard drives, pata and sata from probably all the manufacturers, i dont see why i need to post their specs since they problem persists nomatter what hdd i use.
    Windows XP SP3 proffessional.
nothing else is in the system, i removed every piece of hardware, like sound card, optical drive, etc. to isolate the problem.
    Power supply: Thermaltake ToughPower 700W
BIOS Version: the beta bios posted on this forum that supposedly fixes the video corruption bug (it doesnt). Also tried 1.0 and 1.1
The problem:  random lock-ups. Sometimes it doesnt happen for 2 days and then BAM! Its happening every 15 minutes now. It might stop happening for another 12 hours and start locking up again. It only ever happens when im working in 2d applications like browsing, using messenger or IRC, watching videos on youtube or in a media player, or just moving files around or anything mundane like that.  it once happened when i wasnt touching the keyboard or mouse at all, i was waiting for some files to finish copying over LAN.  I also get the famous video corruption but it is EXTREMELY rare, like once a month.  It crashed the last time the video corruption appeared, once i tried to click the player to pause, the system crashed.  The system will never lock up while playing games, i play medieval II total war for days without any problems.  The store i bought the p7n from tested it for me and they said it worked fine, but they used an ATI card so that may be a clue?  Then again, they are really incompetent and didnt run the right set of tests, and ignored what i had told them about the nature of the crashes.
Detailed description of the events:  System freezes, first everything except the mouse is frozen but if i try to click with the mouse, it freezes too and the screen flashes a black screen every few seconds.  it never recovers and i have to shut it down by holding the power button for several seconds.  some of the 2d graphics in windows get corrupted with artifacts, and the mouse does get heavily corrupted usually.
    What i've tried:
I thought the mobo was defective but it isnt, i got a new mobo from the store and it has the same problem.
Tried working my way through every combination of memory timings, frequencies and voltages that i thought might make a difference but it has no difference on the crashes.
All the hardware works perfectly in my Asus P5N32-E SLI motherboard (i bought this msi mobo for some different reasons that i wont go into here), so theres nothing wrong with any of my components.
The only item i've not had the oportunity to switch with a different one is the power supply, but again, it works perfectly with all other motherboards that i've tried.
Is this possibly related to the video corruption bug?  Does anyone have any idea when the next bios release is due? Please help, it sucks to buy an expensive motherboard that just doesnt work. i'll have to buy a 3rd sli mobo if I cant fix this.
PS:  Is it not possible to regulate fan speed for sysfans connected to the mobo's fan connectors? My asus mobo had great fan speed controls in the bios, if this one doesnt have any such options, i call that ridiculous.

I appreciate your effort, guys. I've tried running the memory in 800mhz and on auto timings and on some other timings too (i was kinda desperate and i messed around with the memory configuration for days with no success), and tried auto volt (it gets set to 1.8 which the memory is rated for at 800mhz) and tried 1.9 and 2.0 and 2.1 and 2.2 and i've tried completely different memory modules too that i borrowed, and tried running in single channel with both modules and running just 1 module.  none of these experiments had any effect on the crashes :\.  But don't you think this could be related to the video corruption bug? I always thought it was, since this problem doesnt seem to happen for me when there is an ATI card in the system.  Not that my 8800gt cards are defective in any way either, they are rock solid on my other motherboard.
I have one more theory, some weird inexplicable compatibility problem between this particular PSU and this particular mobo. Think it's a possibility? The psu is the only thing i have not switched out for another component, every other component i have switched for another one that was known to be working fine.
also, there is the extremely distant possibility that the issue is caused by an issue that the mobo might have with BOTH the kingston and the excelleram modules that i tried, however this seems far-fetched. but this problem is a fact and SOMETHING is causing it. i've eliminated almost everything i can think of.

  • Opinion of K8N Neo Platinum?

    G'day:
I want to get upgrade my ASUS K8V Deluxe MB for something that will lock the PCI and be able to OC beyond 10x210.  This system has been running for over a year with 2x512 Infineon RAM, 2-160Gb Wd SATA (RAID 0), 2x80 GB IDE, ATI 9200, LG 2x DVD RW+/-.
With my 3200+ clawhamer (+stock HS) my options after some reading are the K8N Neo Platinum or a DFI board which was rated well. I've noticed some issues throughout the board and I already have a K8N Neo2 Platinumso am aware of some of them.  I know I'll have to redo the RAID and have some fun playing around with the IDE/SATA to get them all to work
What is your opinions of this board, is the change worth it?
    TIA.

I have a pretty high opinion of it... I've only been into the 64 stuff for a couple of weeks. But I've gotten really terrific results with it as an OC'er
Partly because of some good parts & mostly by some good help & advice.
Check out this thread & see why - http://forum.abit-usa.com/showindex.php?s=&postid=462681#post462681
Look for the last screenshot towards the middle/bottom of the page. 2.61Ghz with a 3000+, 90nm on air bodes well for it's potential. I was shocked.

  • MSI K8N Neo Platinum | system freezes!

    Hi,
I recently bougt a MSI K8N Neo Platinum and an A64 3200+ Clawhammer Boxed. I was looking forward to low temperatures and a stabile motherboard, but I haven´t been that blessed yet. During random cpu loads, I get system hang-ups. Wether it´s running iTunes, CS, Sisoft Sandra, FarCry or nothing at all, the system sometimes stops responding.
I´ve updated to 1.2 BIOS, and I´ve downloaded the unofficial 1.33 BIOS from this forum  , haven´t tried it yet, though.
MSI Corecenter tells med that the CPU temp gets above 55 degrees under full load. Atually, I had up to 70 degrees until I installed a third case fan. But the sys temp reports from 45 to 50 degrees. And I guess this is the little "MSI"-marked heatsink´s fault. It gets burning hot.
Could the system temp be the cause of my hang-ups?
Hoping for tips and possible solutions.

  • K8N Neo Platinum with Venice vcore problem

    Hello,
I got a new Socket754 CPU Venice E6 3000+ and replaced it with NewCastle CG 3200+.
But BIOS indicates VCORE is 1.9V+. It's obvious that it's too high and also CPU temp is 0C/32F.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

  • 925X Neo Platinum O/C Question

Ok, basically i think i fried my sound card overclocking my processor, now ive been told it was because i needed to lock PCI, well I was wondering whether anyone knows how to do this on my motherboard the 925X Neo Platinum. Also is it necessary, and is there anything else I should look out for when overclocking
My memory is set to 600 though it is 533, and this automatically as set my processor to 3.58ghz
All help and suggestions would be very welcome, cheers

Ive tried Oc this board a little, but with rather bad performance, ad you can see in my sig. The system will not post after 220 in FSB so im just keeping it at 215. I dont think its the heat  because its really stable right now. Ive tried unlocking the CPU ratio, but then I cant change it,e.g. 16to17, so its really not working. And of course I will not try to fry my system as Im a little short on cash right now, no mopney for replacements. How high have you got your CPU? And how?

  • K8N Neo Platinum will shutdown in about a minute

My K8N Neo Platinum will shutdown after about a minute of powering up.  The front power LED will flash slowly and I am unable to power it backup without shutting off the main switch to the power supply and waiting awhile before I try again.
I can watch the PC health status within BIOS for a few minutes and all is well until I press any key.  Once I hit a key the system shuts down.
    The PC Health info...
            System Temp    45C
            CPU Temp     43C
            CPU Fan Speed    3139-3154 RPM
            Vcore       1.48-1.50V
            +12.0V      12.03
            +3.3V       3.29V
            +5.0V      5.02-5.04V
            Battery     3.22V
            +5VSB       5.13-5.15V
NOTE: CPU temperatures start out at about 38C that seems pretty high to me.   The room is not close to being 38C or 100 degrees Fahrenheit
    In the BIOS I have...
            - Loaded Fail Safe Defaults
            - Disabled quick boot (so the memory will be tested)
            - Removed logo displays (so I can see the memory being tested)
One memory module fails!  But the other seems to test OK.  With the bad module removed the system still shuts down.
    My equipment...
ANTEC Sonata case with the built in 380W power supply.
            K8N Neo Platinum
            Athlon 64 3200+ processor
            ATI All-in-Wonder 9600
Two Centon 512MB PC3200 memory modules
For testing I removed all IDE devices except for one good hard drive
NOTE: The system will boot up… but will shutdown as described above!
Do we have any ideas on how to isolate this further?
    Thanks
    JJ

Ok, had to reply to this one--had the exact same issue and this definitely is the weirdest experience I've ever had.  (You can skip to the last paragraph for the short version).
I was having the exact same problem, turn on the power, go into the BIOS, all readouts look ok but then after about a minute it would shut off with a blinking power light.  Would turn it off and back on, sometimes it would just get hung and I'd have to reset the BIOS with the jumper.
After about an hour of taking apart and putting the system back together over and over it occured to me--when does a power light flash?  When the system is suspended.  I also noticed that when I actually made it into the BIOS, the moment the system always shut down was when I hit a key on the keyboard (thought that was odd).  So I unplugged my keyboard and let it sit at the POST error for not having a keyboard.  I noticed when I did this it didn't shut itself down.
So then I wondered if the keyboard could possibly be sending some kind of signal the BIOS was interpreting as a "sleep" command.  So off to CompUSA to get another keyboard.  Mine is PS/2 but I thought maybe I'd try out a USB one to see if that would work out.  I figured the PS/2 port was messed up and had an internal short or something.
Unplugged the PS/2 keyboard, plugged in a new USB keyboard and was able to make it into the BIOS, then I was able to actually boot Windows!  (kept my existing Windows installation for the time being).  I wasn't out of the woods yet though, Windows hadn't loaded the USB driver yet so I had no keyboard/mouse when I got to Windows (and I even had the BIOS support option for USB KB/Mouse turned on, but that didn't seem to make a difference).  So, just for the heck of it, I unplugged the PS/2 to USB converter that came with my "USB" keyboard (thank goodness it was using an adapter) and plugged it into the PS/2 port again.  This time the PC booted correctly and I've been using it with the new keyboard in the PS/2 port since with no problems.  The old keyboard in the PS/2 slot still makes the system power off after a few seconds.
This has turned out to be one of the most bizarre scenarios I've ever been faced with.  For reference, my original keyboard was a PS/2 Logitech Deluxe 104 KB, and I replaced it with a cheapo $15 Memorex (was just for testing but hey, it works now).
So anyway, this is absolutely crazy, but try using a USB keyboard or even a completely different keyboard if your system shuts "off" with the power light flashing after 5 - 30 sec after you turn it on.

  • Neo platinum new system problems

hi guys after having help with issues from people here with my old sys decided to upgrade.
so now have a neo platinum
    amd64 clawhammer 3200+
    twin maxtor sata

  • K8N Neo Platinum processor overheating?

I've recently received a K8N Neo Platinum MB with a Athlon 64 3000+ processor, and the combination is constantly producing extremely high processor temperatures!? For example, around 62C in idle while the PC cover is open, and over 70C with the cover closed   Seems as if there's no software processor cooling at all, even at processor ocupancy close to 0%.
I've turned on the Cool and Quiet feature, and the Core Center is installed and active. Contrary to the demonstration I've seen at a presentation only several days ago, the processor NEVER drops to a lower frequency than the default, even when it hasn't got any workload. As instructed by the MB manual, I've checked the last character in the processor serial number, and it's an X (the manual says it has to be higher than O in order for the processor to support the Cool and Quiet feature). I've dismounted and mounted the cooler several times in order to check if it has good contact with the processor, but there seems to be no problem with it - it's flat and tight, with lots of thermal grease. I've even tried two different instances of Windows XP, SP1 and all the drivers installed, one of them was installed from scratch on K8N Neo, and the heating issue remains the same
Is there a cure? A new BIOS version (maybe beta?) or else? This seems to be unacceptable, since in the demonstration CPU temperature in idle was around 31-32C, and even at highest workloads did not exceed 45C (in a CLOSED case).

Subject: temperature report too high - data
    Dear MSI Support,
I recently received my K8N Neo Platinum NF3 250GB and AMD64 3400+ and am seeing high temperatures reported by core center and motherboard monitor bm5 - in the region of 45C idle (same as reported case temperature which seems very high also), and up to 70C and above under sustained 100% load. Cool and quiet is not enabled, neither is DOT. BIOS reports 45C idle temps - I cannot view direct bios temperature readings under load. Cooler is Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu running at full speed.
    CPU information:
    CPU 3400+
    ADA3400AEP5AP
    CAATC 0409VPMW

    Regards,
that's it? fills me with confidence that there will be a fast resolution...
