K8N Diamond plus!!! Help onboard sound

Hello, I have seem many posts about the onboard sound blaster and this board.  I have a slightly different story.
I am one of the many who have VERY low volume on my onboard sound blaster audio. I read about needing a -5V rail and some other posts, but i decided to just buy a PCI version of the card instead.   Well i plugged the card in, Removed the old audio drivers and installed the PCI sound blaster card...and guess what, I STILL HAVE LOW VOLUME!!!!!  WHat does this mean?  Is the power supply screwing with both audio devices? Is it the motherboard??? DRIVERS?? HELP!!!
I upgraded my bios using the latest version in LIVE update and all drivers are updated with live update.
I have NO front audio hooked up and i tried new jumpers on the audio pins with no help.
ALSO... whenever i plug in my Plantronic USB headset....the system will use them one time and never again unless i system restore!!

    Hi MSIGOAT  !
Your question is somewhat strange .
All MSI boards has to be loaded with Optimized Defaults before an ACPI FASTIO-APIC OS like e.g W2K/XP is to be installed .
Optimized Defauls is not just memory timings read from the serial presedence prom on mem , but alot of other vital
settings in cmos is set-up with right parameters.
This includes IOAPIC , ACPI , HDD Block Mode signalling , MPS revision to mention some .
Unless you do this in the first place you will have a cripled OS install.
Heres the deal i basically got my mother board sitting here with everything in it and i want the system to be as optimized as possible. Not know much about the bios the best way to achieve that would be to go into my bios and select load optimized defaults correct?? I probally have a cripled windows instalation although i can play games and stuff maxed i dont feel like im getting the maximum potential out of my system. Im just trying to get some  professional opinions in the msi forums thats all.

  • Soundblaster Audigy on MSI K8N Diamond Plus, Sound Linked? vs Audigy2 ZS?

Had a couple of quick questions regarding the Soundblaster Audigy onboard chip on my MSI K8N Diamond Plus.  I have the audio connected to a front panel, and when I try and change the Right or Left speaker volume balance in Windows (by going to volume control and dragging the balance slider right or left), the volume slider goes down and the balance slider snaps back to center.  As in my previous post, I had some damage to my front panel connector pins and wanted to make sure this wasn't a hardware issue requiring a replacement of the board.
Also, I have a Soundblaster Audigy2 ZS card from my previous system, and I was wondering if it added anything the onboard Soundblaster chip doesn't provide.  I was thinking of installing it, but if the onboard audio does everything the card would, I'd rather just use the onboard solution.
    Thanks.

  • New K8N diamond plus questions please help.

Hi all well i am new to this msi site and am thinking of buying the new MSI K8N Diamond plus motherboard, the problem i have is that i have been a fan of ASUS and have had there last 3 SLI motherboards of which i have not been happy with.
Well i am totaly into overclocking and have an Opteron 165, balistix ram, 600w Enermax PSU, 2x Gainward 6800gt's,
what i am looking for is a motherboard that does what i says it will do, yes the asus a8n32 was a great motherboard but has a limitation on the voltage if useing the new E4-E6 stepping cores of which would only give a max voltage of 1.58v of which the asus spec said 1.76v.
What i am asking you chaps is is this a great motherboard, can you play with all the coms settings without any limitation, or do you think that the DFI motherboard is better.
If you can let me have some info on this motherboard that would be great, as i can not seam to get any reply from MSI about some information.
what i am looking for is what is the max CPU voltage and is there any limitation on it for some chips.
what is the max voltage for the ram
what is the max voltage for the chipset.
any help on this would be great.

Quote from: Stick on 23-February-06, 17:46:08
there is no mobo that alows 4V for the memory. i think the DFI goes up to 3.4V and you can use a DDR Booster to get to 3.8V. the only mobo that is capable to pass 3.3V is the DFI since you can have the choice to select from which rail the memory will be powered (the 3.3V or the 5V). you don't have that option in any other mobo.
Hi thanks for the mail but i have just copied this from msi about this motherboard, see below.
    1.Adjust CPU FSB Frequency:
You can adjust the desired "CPU FSB Frequency" by using "+,-" key. The default value of AMD Athlon™64 is 200MHz. The maximum value is 450MHz.
    2.AMD Overclocking Configuration (CPU Ratio):
If the CPU is Athlon™64 FX series, the ratio range is from 4 to 25.
If the CPU is Athlon™64 series, the ratio should be set according to its model number. For example, the ratio range of 3000+ is from 4 to 9, and the 3200+ is from 4 to 10.
    3.Adjust Extra CPU Voltage:
This is for adjusting CPU voltage while overclocking. Following the CPU default value, the maximum is 1.8V. The interval is 0.05V.
    4.Adjust DDR Memory frequency:
The Memclock is the major part which has four different frequencies to match many kinds overclocking memory modules. The memory frequency settings includes DRAM/FSB=1/2, 2/3, 5/6, 1/1.
    5.DDR Memory Voltage:
This is for adjusting memory voltage while overclocking. K8N Diamond Plus has a special design. We use jump to distinguish two level arrangement of voltage. In this way it can get maximum 4.1V for overclocking modules. As you can see the below pictures, the left one is the standard mode when jump hat is located at the top postion. The default value is 2.5V, and the maximum is 3.2V. The interval is 0.05V. As the right one, it is overclocking mode when jump hat is located at the under postion. The default value is 3.2V, and the maximum is 4.1V. The interval is 0.05V.
What i am asking is there any limitation on the cpu voltage like the asus a8n32 as this had a max voltage of 1.58v due to it having a limit put on it by recomendation of amd.

  • Help! My K8n diamond plus wont start!

HELP! I've bought a MSI k8n diamond plus mother board, and it woont start, i've tested all my other hardware on my other computer, and it works fine. When i'm turning on my computer, it shuts down after a second. What is the problem?

What does it mean if it has a short...
There is a 12 Vatx Connecter on my motherboard with 8 pin, but on my power supply theres only four, i've connected it anyway, and it fits in, on the half of the connector.
    Could that be the problem?
I use the same type of connectors, no need for converters.
I too have only 4 pins out of the 8 on the board connected, no problem at all....
    And yes I do overclock
    But big chance it's the PSU that can't cope, it has only 14A @ 12V1 & 18A @ 12V....not very much for a 500W....
Also, try to boot with just 1 stick of memory in slot 1.

  • I need help DDR voltage and latencies (K8N Diamond Plus)

I noticed my DDR voltage was incorrect in the bios and I don't know what "Auto" is doing with my timings. I have 2GB of Corsair TWINX2048-3200C2 DDR400 Memory installed on DIMM1 and DIMM2 of my K8N Diamond Plus board.
So far I've made the following changes (as my RAM's specs indicate) in the BIOS but I'm new to this (first build).
    DDR Voltage 2.75V
    CAS  2.0
    tRCD 3
    tRP   3
    tRAS 6
I left everything else at it's default setting. Are there any other changes I should make?

I'm having an issue with the 1.10 BIOS that is preventing me from manualy setting the timings...The problem I'm having right now is deciding what BIOS to install and where to download it. Perhaps you could help me with that?
With pleasure!  I had the same problem with the v1.10 BIOS, as did another member here.  I flashed BACK to the v1.0 BIOS (make sure to use the command line switched (just run the batch file)) and was able to set timings, and then I flashed directly to the 3.0A BIOS and was able to adjust timings still.  See my old thread here.
For my success (I don't know if any or all of these influenced it, but I'm just happy it works) in flashing I did the following:
Download the 1.0 (original) and 3.0A (latest "official") BIOS images from MSI's support site.
Downloaded the DrDos BIOS flash bootable ISO CD image from bootdisk.com
Used my ISO software to add the BIOS image files onto the ISO image.
    Burned the ISO to CD.
    Booted from the CD
    Flashed to 1.0
Cut Power (flipped PSU switch in back), held down the CMOS reset switch button on the mobo and the power button for 45 seconds.
Powered up, set "Optimized Defaults" and set memory voltage to 2.75v and rebooted.
Set all "normal" BIOS parameters (boot devices, et al).
Windows (x64) loaded with no issues, Everest reported timings appropriately
Did the same procedure for the 3.0A BIOS, with similar success.
You can see my post or click on the link in my sig for detailed memory reports.

Are you running just one set of TWINX2048-3200C2's?
Just one pair.  I fiddled with the CR and the only result was with the single known good DIMM my latency got slightly slower (like a 5ns drop), but still no love with 2 DIMMS.  I think it is just dead.  But this is not my story (at least not in this thread)...this is memticvirus's story.

  • Help please Problem Raid K8N Diamond Plus

I have a PC with mather board K8N Diamond Plus 2HD maxtor 80gb (6V080E0) sata II. You can help me I am becoming crazy I must mistake in the bios or in the raid, I just do not succeed to install windows on 2 HD Sata II are compatibility problems?

    Welcome!!
Firstly, may I suggest you give as much system information as possible, this will help us to assist!!
Second, I recently set up my RAID 0 and had an XP installation problem, but I believe mine was caused by my motherboard not liking the new 1.2BIOS.
As soon as I went back to the default (1.0) BIOS, no probs!

  • K8N Diamond Plus, Line-In & AVerMedia Studio .103

    Hello,
I got K8N Diamond Plus and AVerMedia Studio .103 audio out connected to my onboard sound device's (Audigy) Line-in. I don't know how to describe the situation but I'll try. The problem is that the captured audio is some kind of wavey like an old "record", the sound is cry-like especially when there's a music in the background.
It is really annoying to have such a problem with this kind of expensive product. I'm sure it's not TV Card related because I use it for 5 years now with the same OS, Application, Drivers and cable. The day I upgraded my system I met this trouble. I've searched for driver updates, chipset updates related to this issue but couldn't find any. I tried every possible option/configuration with the sound card and no hope.
I think it is because that the line-in is also used as an output with the 4 speaker configuration. Every passed day with this issue I add spoilt videos to my archive and this upsets me.
Thanks for your help and concerns
    Yours respectfully

The line-in only has dual fuction in 8 speaker sw config (7+1) .
With 5.1 and lower the numbered jack #1 is only having line-in config.
Make sure you have correct Multi-Channel Audio Function mode properly selected in the software
    utility for your speaker connections/configurations.
And use the Creative web update to have the laterst drivers and software .
First of all thanks to all of you guys...
Secondly, I was just trying to point out that may be the dual-function support (doesn't matter when) is doing this...
And yes I am using windows XP as it says in my signature, but thats not an issue since i used this card (AverMedia) with XP pro for four years with no problem.... I can't say anything about the dual-core tho...
BTW I tried to manually update the audigy from creative's web site, but couldn't be sure if I had to download the Audigy drivers or should I use MSI's web site for my sound device, since it's on board? Or is there a version in the Creative web site to, or even the audigy drivers itself may be? Do you have any suggestions? MSI doesn't have an update tho I know that..

    hello there,
"by NIC do you mean the network adapter or the network bus enumerator?????"
Network Interface Controller (NIC, network adapter).
have you tested to use your secondary onboard NIC?
if you use NAM, remove/un install it. (NAM-->Nvidia Active Armor)
go to NIC advanced properties, and disable Checksum Offload, Low Power State Link speed, Segmentation Offload.
    re-test.
    what BIOS version you use?
BIOS versions(collection) can be found here: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=96683.msg742311#new
good version are 1.33 and 3.0A

  • K8N Diamond Plus, SLI and Creative X-Fi cards, anyone running similar?

    Hi there!
I've got an ASUS A8N32-SLI board and my X-Fi card does not work with it, nor does it for many other people with similar setups.
    See here:
    http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=soundblaster&message.id=31426
    and here:
    http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=soundblaster&message.id=26289
I get crackling and popping noises when running most games, e.g. BF2, Fear, FarCry.  When my 2x7800GTX's are in SLI mode it crackles loads, e.g. start far cry, click options, and listen.  When i disable SLI mode it crackles less, but it still crackles.  Many others encounter similar issues with their systems that are not identical but the symptoms are similar - high load = crackling/popping.
    My question is:
Is anyone here sucessfully running any X-Fi card (music, fatality, elite pro, etc) with 2x video cards and NO crackling/popping in BF2, FEAR and FarCry?
I've already had a replacement X-Fi card from creative which their tech guy said "should" fix it, lol, I'm wondering wether to replace my A8N32-SLI with an K8N Diamond Plus to fix the problem.  Besides, the MSI board has better PCI slot location and works with nTune too unlike the ASUS board.

    What's going on guys.
I hate to see peep's having soooo many prob's and it sucks major BALLZ. The reason why I'm reposting is that I encountered a new issue. Not with my rig, but a friend's.
We pretty much have the same setup. Differences are he's using 2GB of Corsair DDR400 (which is picking up as DDR333 as well), different branded video cards (I'm running two EVGA 7800GT's in SLi, he's running two BFG 7800GT's in SLi), XFi Platinum (me, Fatality Edition) and he's got a dedicated ITE RAID PCI card for his RAID from his previous rig. Configured his BIOS pretty much the same way I have it running (he wanted to Overclock his AMD x2 4400+ to 2.6 GHz), but when it came to installing Windows we kept getting BSOD's during installation. Looked over things numerous times and it didn't make sense. We resetted the BIOS to default settings and Windows went through without a hitch. We tried OC'ing it one more time and Windows was fine. But, when he installed and ran Quake 4, either Windows or the game would just lock up. He booted back into the BIOS and put the CPU back at stock frequency of 2.2 GHz. Game ran flawlessly afterwards. That points at the processor. The only differences were we both have different stock fans and his CPU was manufactured in July '05. Mine in Sept '05. His rig also reports the infamous "Phantom" PCI modem as well.
Quake 4 is the only game he's got installed so far, but he reports everything is set to their highest qualities, including resolution. He said it runs great with no anomalies. He's going to install Dawn of War and Winter Assault later I know.
Me? I haven't run into any issues with any games either, including F.E.A.R. as Hydrasworld asked. Both of our sound cards are in the Communication PCI Slot of the motherboard. My take on the OC issue is since we're using different proc's from different wafers, maybe my chip had revisions in September that the July proc my friend has didn't. Also, his heatsink has one less copper pipe I noticed. I'll still drop by for help. Good luck to you all and the only other thing I can add is try using the latest drivers for each piece of hardware you've got.
    LPB
P.S. If you can and you purchased a retail version of the processor, on one of the sides of the carton insert for the processor, a date should be printed. Maybe that can explain some issues. Once more, my proc was manufactured September 15th, 2005.

  • K8N Diamond Plus' Audio drivers 4 Vista RC1???

Guys i need to find drivers for RC1 Vista for my built in Mother board creative Audigy SE on K8N Diamond Plus. Can any one help me where to find these drivers????????

well i installed the vista RC1 and downloaded the Audigy Se's vista RC1 drivers from creative's  web site and i installed it on my system and it detected my motherboard's audigy SE as audigy live 24 bit but there was no sound so i updated the driver and i gave the path of my window's xp driver and it worked for windows vista RC1. and my sound card is now dectected as audigy SE not live 24 bit. thanks to msi for making a driver which works with both xp and vista RC1. i ll try to install the Xp's driver directly on Vista with setup.exe, and will see if this will give me all the sound configrations which we do see in windows xp. But i still request MSi to provide us good vista drivers.
    I have one question,
CAN WE INSTALL AUDIGY SE's DRIVERS DOWNLOADED FROM WWW.CREATIVE.COM FOR AUDIGY SE BUILT IN SOUND CARD OF DIAMOND PLUS MOTHERBOARD(FOR WINDOWS XP) ?

  • K8N Diamond Plus need a -5v rail?

If you read my saga, by now you know my on-board sound card isn't working, I haven't been able to figure out what was the problem, nor did my shop.
Now.. do I need -5v rail  for the k8n diamond plus like the K8N Diamond (non-plus) ?

Quote from: HighTest on 14-February-06, 05:15:15
Doubt it, as you don't need it on the non-plus.   See my sig, I've got one and my onboard Creative Sound solution is working fine with my Enermax EG565P-VE FMA 2.0 (SLI Compliant).
There's no -5V on the supply, in fact there is no wire on that connector, so it's very evident.   What I do see is a mod performed before the board was shipped for retail.
Since I purchased my board in Feb 2005, I suspect most in the channel also don't require the -5V.    The Diamond Plus has the mod build into the actual board design, so you shouldn't have any problems there.
only the 1st revision Of DIAMOND have -5V supply. Your's the latest revision without -5V
Quote from: TEKNOW on 02-March-06, 04:20:05
What I mean is, I no longer have crackling/popping/distortion etc. - but my sound is -weak, it's maybe 1/5 the power it used to be on my old P4 rig.
You need the powerful PSU which has 12V and i believe it has been discuss in this threat.

  • PCI Modem??? I don't have one installed... K8N Diamond Plus...

This is what I've got installed on the K8N Diamond Plus:
    AMD x2 4400+ @ 2.75 GHz
    4 GB DDR 500 GigaRAM
2x EVGA GeForce 7800GT's in SLi
    Sound Blaster XFi Fatality Edition
    2x 74 GB WDC Raptors (non-RAID)
2x 320 GB WDC SATA Raid Drives (RAID-0 on Sil3132 chipset)
    Sony DRU 810 DVD Recorder
    Sony CRX 320 Combo Drive
WinXP Pro 32-Bit SP2 installed (WinXP Pro 64-Bit this weekend)
Windows installed A-O-K, drivers no prob, but, I ran into two snags. One, in my system properties a "PCI Modem" shows up looking for a driver. Second, I have a Koutech Firewire 800 / USB 2.0 PCI-e card that picks up when it wants to. That card has been removed physically and I'm planning on RMA'ing the Combo card...so far. Has anyone seen a phantom modem card? I'm really hoping and praying that it's not the motherboard that's defective.
The only other minor issue is that my memory in the BIOS detects as DDR 333 at 2.6v. GigaRAM recommends 2.9-3.1v, but I cannot adjust the voltage in the BIOS. Is there a physical way thru the BIOS (without voiding the warranty) or only way I'll be able to thru software??? Prefer not to. Any help on the issues mentioned will be appreciated.

I see that few people have come and gone past this topic. Can anyone help or does anyone have any insight???

  • MSI K8N Diamond Plus - Guide to my first week

OK, not a newb here, but been around the block quite a bit.   MSI K8N Diamond Plus is my 5th A64 mobo (ECS K8M800, my daily undestroyed computer, K8T800, my 12 year olds gamer, Asus A8V Deluxe, first 939 system, Abit AN8 SLI, first SLI gamer, and now the MSI Diamond Plus).   Had the KDP (K8N Diamond Plus) for more than a week now, and here's what I've learned.
This is state of the art again, and we have no one to blame but ourselves for the pain this causes us when we upgrade like lunatics
And as usual, the drivers and BIOS are al Dente (i.e. not cooked enought yet, a little raw)
MSI is also oddly silent on this system, which is wierd, as they are a large company, and specifically cater to enthusiasts.  But their BIOS guys are MIA.  Hopefully this will not be forever.  Asus, ABIT, DFI, Epox are always fast with fixes
The board is a nice design, with everything basically accessible, as much as any other board.   Lots of purposeful components, not too many dumb frills.  No tooty fruity colors, but rather practical parts.
The new 2 piece NForce chipset is fine, and the MSI guys gave us a decent, but funky cooler.  It gets a little warm to the touch when you pound on it with Prime95, or Quake4, but other than that it is fine
The manual has a zillion typos, and fortunately for us in this forum, we have shared what we've learned.  The translation from Chinese to English leaves quite a bit to be desired, and hopefully, MSI will learn from Asus and Abit and get a better translation service.  In 2006 this is just plain stupid, especially with a $225 board
As usual, the mobo supplied tweaker utilities are just aweful.  They look like a hallucination from a Hunter S Thompson book, and they work about as well.  Core center is a sad state of affairs, and the rest of them just burrow their way into your otherwise stable system and cause it to have poor behavior.  And therefore as usual, the BIOS is the best way, if slowest, to tweak this bundle of parts
Which brings us to the BIOS.  IMHO, the worst one I've seen on a high end board.  ZERO explanation for half the settings (this is not strange in and of itself, BIOS is still a black art, but in a tweakers board, we should have some basic explanation  )
There seem to be adequate settings in the BIOS for all sorts of doodads and gizmos, but who the heck knows what half of them are.  Roger points out rightfully, that we now need to "Tune" across all these different intermediary bus structures and test.  But with the lack of info from either NVidia, MSI or anyone else for that matter, its kinda hard to know where to start.
The board is clearly sensitive, which is a result of it being high strung.  This is no different than any "first out" product I've ever bought.  Most take 2 or 3 turns of the crank to get totally stable and forgiving.  This one hated my OCZ platinum EL 2Gb kit memory, and it brought out the worst in one of the SLI based EVGA 7800 GT COs.   These components worked in the Abit AN8 SLI (although not always great), but the MSI has ZERO tolerance for even the slightest pertubation from the memory.  It was BSOD city until I removed both of these components by process of elimination that took probably 100 hours
Once I removed the bad components, and replaced the memory with Geil Ultra X 2x512 2-2-2-5, it worked great, ran Prime95 for 10 hours with no errors, and seems reasonably stable.  I've RMA-d the bad 7800GT CO back to EVGA, and will report back on how SLI behaves when I get the new one (cross shipped of course, I haveno patience )
I also now need to replace the 2Gb RAM kit with something that the board will tolerate.  I may RMA the 2Gb kit back to OCZ and try another one, but I dunno.   I love OCZ but I have a bad feeling about this, even though they have great!!! support.  I may try OCZ PC4000 or the RAM that Roger successfully used.
I did upgrade to the 1.16 BIOS, and found that some new things were added, as well as voltage control in Cell was a little better, but registration of changes in voltage is still a disaster.   I adjusted a bunch of times, it didn't register, and I ended up smoking a new A64 3700+ Diego with 1.95 volts, even though the BIOS claimed it was 1.53.  I had to rebot to see what was going on.   The Thermalright XP-90 kept the proc from melting down through the earth
Finally, I hope this board attracts more people, and therefore more tweakers that can figure out all these gadgets and settings.  Everyone flocked to the Asus X16 SLI product, which is too bad, as this one needs lots o' folks to hack it up for us to figure out what is going on.
The on board Creative audio sounds lousy to my ears, and I will replace it with an Audigy 2ZS gamer that I had in the Abit.  It just sounds better, but hopefully the drivers will not trash my newly stable system.   Creative scares me, they scare me alot.
I've been able to get the CPU up to 2.4Ghz, with a .5 volt bump to the CPU and 2.9 volts into the Geil memory.  So far, so stable, no smoke coming out yet
I hope this info is somewhat valuable to someone on this board.  I will post details of all changes that I make, as others are doing, so we can at least take care of ourselves with this thing.

Which brings us to the BIOS.  IMHO, the worst one I've seen on a high end board.  ZERO explanation for half the settings (this is not strange in and of itself, BIOS is still a black art, but in a tweakers board, we should have some basic explanation  )

first of all, i do think that all the settings in the BIOS have an explanation in the manual, even if it's a basic one. if that explanation doesn't tell you everything in detail, is because if you do need a detailed explanation of the settings, you probably shouldn't be messing around with those settings.

wanna tell me how did you get 1.95V on that mobo?

a 0.5V  bump? again, you must be joking. maybe 0.05V.

  • CPU Usage 100%? K8N Diamond Plus

Never before have I witnessed the CPU being used at it's absolute maximum.  It has been occuring regularily with my system.  I noticed it first when my screen saver started getting jittery.  This seems to occur most often about 1-2 minutes after windows finishes loading.  It seems kind of odd to me that this occurs during typically idle system times.  The memory usage also dramatically rises during these spikes, using ctrl+alt+delete I noticed svchost.exe to be the culprit of the memory usage atleast.  The hard drive doesn't appear to be active when these events occur.  Is this normal for this motherboard, or is this something that should be corrected?
I've always had 3 short beeps upon startup with this board, but it has never stalled the boot process.  Anyone know what this means?
I've upgraded my board somewhat recently and carried over the CPU and memory from a older MSI model that used the same type.  Could it be possible either or both are incompatible?
Also one, somewhat less important problem.  First off I must say that the PS/2 power on feature is pretty cool.  I used it with a wireless keyboard so I could turn on my PC from my living room HDTV (I have my comp wired through Y/Pr/Pb cables).  Only problem is about one in every 4 or so shutdowns the system restarts immediatly when this feature is selected in the bios.  Bios issue maybe?

get Process Explorer to determinate in details what make this CPU usage: http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html
it has more detailed information than the built-in task manager.
