K8N Neo 2 dying?

Hi, in having some trouble with my K8N neo 2 platinum lately.
Short story: the pc started freezing just after starting regulary(at first in windows, later on it didnt make it past bootscreen), after clearing the CMOS it errored that there was something wrong with the bios, so i used the bios recovery method. This at first did not work, but after clearing the CMOS again it did boot once. But when i tried to reboot it it just froze a few times on the boot screen, and now it doesnt do anything anymore.
Long story:
It started a week or two ago when my pc occasionly freezed, usually within 5 min after booting. This became more frequent as time passed by, two days ago things went really down hill. The pc started freezing at the boot screen, with the leds indicating that it was initialzing the cpu. After rebooting and letting it cool down a few times i finally got into windows. But the next time i booted it up it had the same problem all over, which got even worse: it didn't even make it to the boot screen. It didn't gave a signal to the monitor, and the leds inidicated a problem with decompressing the bios image to the RAM.
After this occured i first tried to reset the CMOS, by changing the jumper on the mainbord, this had effect, but the right one. After clearing the CMOS it started the boot blocker and gave the error that the bios was damaged\missing. So after this problem i first replaced the bios battery, and then cleared the cmos again. This didn't help so i used the bios recovery method as explained on this site. After this the pc just kept rebooting just after the boot screen. I then cleared the CMOS again, after which it booted, but frooze while loading windows. After another reboot it managed to start windows, but after rebooting it just froze on boot screen again. And now, a few reboots later it doesnt do anything at all.
My best guess is that this mainbord is in need of an RMA or replacement, what do you guys think?
Specs: MSI K8N neo 2 platinum
AMD 3500
ASUS AX800XT
2x 1GB Kingston PC3200 ddr

What i forgot to look at was the led bracket, it now indicates that the CPU is damaged. I cleared the CMOS again, and pulled one ddr stick out, this had no effect at all.
Does this mean the CPU is no more, or could it still be the mainbord? because the trouble i had with the bios are kinda hard to explain with a damaged CPU, or is that a stupid thing to think?
Is there someway to test which part died without using another s939 pc?

  • Can a BIOS upgrade allow NCQ to be enabled on K8N Neo 2P?

My new hard drive happens to have NCQ capablity, though I didn't buy it for that reason (Maxtor DiamondMax  10).
Is it possible that a future BIOS upgrade would allow nForce 3 mb's to take advantage of NCQ?
I suspect the answer is no, but would just like to hear from someone who knows for sure.

ok then you lucky person, are you using nvidia ide drivers or windows ones, cos if you read it properly i say that windows drivers are fine just not nvidia ide drivers, and you may have diff firmware in your maxtor,, whatever, my 300 gig 16meg died in the msi k8n neo, as did the pata version 250 gig, 2 drives, with 16 meg cache ncq, yet the maxtor 200 gig non ncq drive 8 meg cache is fine in this mobo, as is the hitachi 250 sata drive, this is just using windows drivers.
Hope it keeps working for you which ever way, and ooh do a sear\ch and see how many other people are having trouble with this, and yet you send an email to msi about this and they say they have never heard of anyone having this kind of trouble,.

  • K8N Neo Platinum issue, computer does not boot..

    Hello,
I’m going to try to be as thorough as possible here… :D
Recently I reinstalled Windows Xp (32-bit version) on my computer to speed things up again like it used to be. I did an updated on the BIOS while I was at it as well, through the Live Update tool downloaded from the msi.com.tw website. The install went well, no errors. The next day while playing WoW the computer began acting weird and computer froze during gameplay. After that the computer had artefacts, strange disturbance on the screen making it impossible to see anything on the screen. So I thought that maybe since the screen looked all messed up it was definitely the graphics card that was about to die and so I sent the gfx to the retailer and they checked it thoroughly for errors without finding any, while they were at it they also checked my RAM and they also came out clean.
A few days ago when my Gfx and RAM came back I inserted them back onto the mobo and when turning on the powerswitch nothing happened… I therefore tried to solve the problem myself and began reinserting all the computer parts piece after piece and well the computer started at least with the fans going and all but after a few seconds it shuts down again.
When I plug in the power cable the PSU makes a clicking sound, don’t know if that’s normal but haven’t noticed it before.
To maybe help you guys when helping me I installed the d-bracket (the usb thingy with 4 led’s ^^) which shows 4 red lights when starting the computer and lasts until the computer shuts down. According to the d-bracket FAQ it means: “- The D-LED will hang here if the processor is damaged or not installed properly or you have a weak Power Supply Unit.”
Well I reinstalled the cpu, put on new thermal grease so I don’t think that is the problem and the computer has been working fine for more than one year until now... How do I know if it’s the PSU or if the cpu is damaged? Could the motherboard been damaged after Live update’s flash? And what could have caused the artefacts on my screen the other day? Errors with the newest nVidia gfx drivers?  I’m very confused :S
    What should I do?
    Thank you for your help!

    Hi again..
I've now received a new PSU from Antecs RMA department. A TruePower 2.0 380W. My computer still doesn't work. 4 Red LED's when trying to boot it up. But I have noticed one thing since last time I wrote here. Remember what I was saying that I upgraded my BIOS through LiveUpdate? When I later checked my motherboard I noticed the CMOS pins around JBAT1(I think) was incorrectly placed. Instead of having them on either 1,2(to keep settings) or 1,3(to clear CMOS) they were placed right next to the JBAT1 pins, on something that wasn't named or explained in my manual. Maybe that is the reason my computer is acting strange? I mean the BIOS could maybe not have properly been saved or something. :/
I'm too inexperienced to know if that had anything to do with my recent computer isssues, but maybe you guys know. Would that screwup by me be covered by my warranty?
If that pins-placed-wrong-on-the-mobo problem doesn't have anything to do with my problem that leaves me with the 4 LEDs from the D-bracket showing a broken CPU or PSU(it's brand new, shouldn't be any problem with it!). So a damaged CPU it is.
Anyone of you got an idea? Been away from my computer for too long. This is getting annoying.
    Thanks.
    /Christopher

  • MSI K8N NEO Platinum Edition PROBLEM

Hi (my english is not good sorry for that)
I just got my new computer:
    MSI K8N NEO Platinum Edition
    AMD Athlon64 3200+
    Western Digital Caviar 160Gb
    PNY Verto GeForce 6800Ultra 256Mb

The Problem is that when i start the computer, it boot and die directly no bootscreen what so ever, it boot and die.  i dont know what to do plz help me

Make sure you have Both the ATX Wires on.. theres the Big one! (21Pins i think).. and the Small 4Pin Connector both need to be connected.. if you havent done so yet.. Another thing you could do is Take everything out and place it on a cardboard or something appropriate for the mobo.... I think your motherboard is shorting?.. if it's touching your case.. I had somewhat the same issue long time ago.. give it a try..if you want hope it helps..

  • K8N NEO PLATINUM Nvidia nforce 3 250 GB Chipset rebooting - hanging !@$%@#$@

    Hi folks,
I am working on the K8N NEO platinum motherboard based on the Nvidia nforce 3 250 GB Chipset.
A couple of days ago I lost my internet connection (broadband). After a couple of minutes it ok again. But suddenly the computer frooze.
After rebooting (button on case) I found out that lots of things couldn't be closed anymore once they were opened. I needed to use CTRL-ALT-DEL to go the the active Tasks. But then that started to freeze too so I decided to wipe everything of the system.
I repartioned and reformated the computer with the win XP PRO CD and reinstalled the OS. I saw immediatly that the system was slower then before and that it did not found the internet connection anymore. I checked the LAN connection and there it sayed that the LAN card was working well but that no cables were connected. This was not true because I dubbel checked them twice. I even replace the cable. It was not my Internet provider neighter because the computer is in a local network and others had no problem to access the internet. So I decided to reinstall and reinstall it again. I reinstalled the system (partioning, formatting) it 4 times. The last time suddenly it found my connection back. Then I installed all updates of windows and I used my live update from MSI to update my components.
I am using live update 3 and updated the BIOS and all other parts who needed to be updated. This was done without the presence of a AV and so on. Everything went well and no errors occured. I received everytime a message with success.
Today my computer suddenly hanged itself again. This already 3 times. Nothing is possible anymore except the boot button on the case.
I also encountered 3 times the while surfing the computer suddenly reboots itself without any warning or message.
What the hell is going wrong here ???
Can aynone give me a clue please ?

  • K8N Neo Platinum Just quit working

My son's K8N Neo Platinum suddenly quit working while he was in a game last night - it just tured off with no warning.
It has power - the ethernet NIC light comes on when the power supply is on.  But when you press the "on" button, the fans all just rotate about 1/8 turn and then nothing (at least all the case and vid card fans - the CPU and NB fans do not appear to start).
This makes me think the board just up and died.  Is that a reasonable conclusion?
I've had no problems and no issues with it since I built the comp almost a year ago.
The specs are in the signature below.
    Thanks

Thanks for the response, but I can't imagine what clearing the BIOS would do because it doesn't even get as far as the very start of the POST.
Neither can I, but sometimes it works, as Syar mentions..
    Quote from: mpelle4456 on 08-May-05, 03:38:27
Like I said, there is power to the MB - I know that for a fact because the Ethernet NIC light is on. I turn the power supply off (or unplug it, or whatever), turn it back on, and then press the button to turn the comp on, then the case and video card fans run very briefly, and shut off (less than 1 full rotation). The CPU and NB fans do not turn at all.
I understood it the first time
    Hope that's all it is...

  • K8N Neo Platinum - Hangs On "Detecting IDE Devices" at POST

My K8N Neo Platinum motherboard died about a month ago.  Not having the time or the patience to RMA it, I bought a new one.
I got the new system all setup.  The BIOS version on the Motherboard is 1.4
I have a 200gb SATA (NO RAID) HD setup as my boot device, and I also 120gb EIDE setup as a secondary HD.
With my Previous MB, everything worked fine.  I had the SATA drive on SATA1, and the IDE as the Master on the 1st IDE Chain.  I also have a DVD Drive and a DVD Burner on the 2nd IDE chain.  When I set the system up like this this time, the system just hangs at Detecting IDE Devices.  It will never boot into Windows.  If I unhook the SATA drive, it detects the IDE drive no problem and tries to boot to it, although it doesn't have windows, so it will not boot.  If I unhook the IDE drive, the SATA drive boots.  That is what I have been doing for the past two weeks, but I would like to access my 2nd Hard drive.
    Any Ideas would be helpful.
    Thanks!

another thing is never have any other drives in your set up when loading xp to raid
or it writes the mbr to the ide drive not the sata
    hence
it detects the IDE drive no problem and tries to boot to it
you have put the sata raid drive first in bios boot order ?

  • K8N Neo 2 platinum freezes. NB Fan problem ?

    Hi all,
I've had a Neo 2 platinum for almost 3 years now, which was running absolutely good.
Then, I began to have random freezes on the Windows desktop (not with games).
I thought I ought to clean up a bit the beast's inside as dust could be the problem.
After cleanup, same crashes, but even more and more often, to the point last WE, it was
freezing at BIOS level, before booting. Now it seems I can no longer boot (not even the startup
beep of the mobo is heard !). Only the CPU and case fans spin, nothing more ....
My question: since I've noticed the NB fan was blocked (probably died like the countless others), could it be because of that I can no longer boot, even with a cold system ?
I'm trying to guess what part I need to replace, PSU, fan, or mobo ...
    Setup: AMD64 dual-core 3800+
              K8N Neo 2 plat.
2 GB of RAM (no recall of the mark)
              Antec 450W PSU
              NVIDIA 7800 GT GPU

Quote from: Fredrik on 02-December-08, 05:34:35
With the NB fan having a problem I wonder if the processor fan might be dusty.
450W Antec sounds like one that came with the case. Is that so?
Well, the CPU fan was dusty, before I cleaned it, yes. Now, it's clean, and is definitely not the problem.
The 450W PSU was with the Antec case, yes. I was kinda suspecting it to be the problem, since it decided to die after just below one year of the system's life (it probably grew fed up of all the power cuts we have in the winter, here, thus I RMAed it and put an MGE UPS), but I think I can rule it out now. All equipment are just booting OK, until disk query is issued. That + the dead fan makes the cause for me ...

  • K8N Neo Platinum - No post ... help!

    Hey folks,
Refer to this thread for info ... Help ... my pc won't turn on!
I'll start off with the system specs so you'll have an idea of what I'm going to be talking about :
    AMD Athlon64 3000+
    MSI K8N Neo Platinum
    Corsair CMX-512 PC3200
    WD 160gb SATA
    MSI 5900xt
    Antec SmartBlue 350w
So I bought the parts ... 2 months ago. I used it for about 1 month ...ran like a dream. Died ... RMA'ed the motherboard, and a month later, I get it. I assemble the system, doesn't post the first time I turn it on. Shut it off, posts ... attempts to log onto the Windows partition that is on the hard drive i used it with ... gets into Windows logon screen, and crashes. On several occasions, I noticed the system switched off on its on for some reason. Switch off the system, try again, and it crashes. Switch it off (by holding on the case switch, then switching off the power supply). This time, I switch the PS back on again, and the system fans start, but nothing comes on screen, or posts. I noticed on the video card, the fan starts up, but then stops after it realizes that the system hasn't posted (heatsink is cool). I know the video card works because I just pulled it out of my spare system ... and it works just fine. I have no idea what is going on. I don't know what to do. Any help is greatly apprecitated.
Quite frankly, I am rather dissappointed with MSI at the moment. I fork out my hard earned money for a good motherboard, it dies out of the blue for no reason, I RMA it, and a MONTH later, i get a crappy refurb (looks quite used too!). Is there any customer satisfaction involved? I would like to get on the phone and actually talk to some one about this.
    Thanks guys!

Just remembered to attach the diagnostic d-bracket. I get red, red, green, red.
    Hopefully this'll help.
EDIT: So I cleared the CMOS. I can get the system to POST now. This posting thing is still iffy ... posts sometimes, and decides not to at other times. Only problem is, is a stability problem. I managed to get the system to boot into the WinXP install I had before. Just freezes out of the blue. Also froze when I tried to install a new copy of windows. Freezes on random occasions.   The motherboard I had previously booted on first try, and installed without any problems. It never froze, or crash. Why would this motherboard crash?
Also found that the fan on the v-card does not spin when it is not active. It spins fine when there is something displayed on the monitor.
Bios is V1.4. CPU temp at around 38-40°C. NB temp at around 28-30°C. Temps seem to be normal.

  • K8N Neo Platinum Mysterious Power off

well to start off i here is the info on my PSU:
    -MSI K8N Platinum (MS-7030) ver:1 (Never overclocked)
-AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (Never overclocked)
    -2x 512MB PC3200 DDR400 Generic Memory (Never overclocked)
-ATI Radeon x850 XT Platinum (Never overclocked)
    -1x Maxtor 80GB SATA HDD
-1x Panasonic 16x DL DVD Burner
-1x Samsung 16x DVD ROM Drive
    now on to the problem....
i have had this system running for the past week and things have not been right from the get go. first i had to deal with a faulty HDD from seagate now my motherboard has learned how to click off with out the slightest provocation. i can't figure it out. it is in the middle of the night. my PC is open on my desk and while i am playing HL2 the computer will just *click* and everything goes black, the HDD heads click to a stop, the fans halt, the monitor goes black, and the power LED just sits there taunting me with a steady heartbeat of 3 secs on and 3 secs off over and over. BAAAAAA.... so i reach for the power button and give it a somewhat satisfying click only to become more angry to the fact that nothing happens; so being the elite technical support person i am i try the button again but to no avail . now i am loosing it and as my blood pressure begins to rise i angrily shut off my UPS with a vengeful CA-CHUNK of the main switch. thinking that my worst fears are over and that i was dreaming i look up at the once vibrant and pulsing LED waiting for it to go out only to find that the light kept pulsing for some time until it died in blackness. feeling that revenge was complete i flip on the UPS and then press the power button to see that my motherboard is now back to life and completely fine. so i go on my merry way fragging and winning the realms of city 17 only to have the same horrid story repeat itself once again   .
i can turn on my computer just fine after cutting the power however the frequency of this event does not permit any educated guess as to its future occurrences. it is needless to say erratic and still aggravating. is there anything that can be done to same my precious gaming rig? thanks in advance,

    Hi,
It looks indeed as a PSU problem. I had a similar problem with an MSI KT3 Ultra ARU. In that particular case, the PSU,
which claimed to to be a 480 Watt PSU,  was a very poor one, which could not even reach 320 Watt...
is there a way i could test my PSU in for this?
Quote from: EdwinGF on 23-September-05, 04:51:49
...The symptoms were the same you're having on your K8N Neo Platinum. Once we tried with a more decent and powerful
PSU, a Cooler Master® RealPower 550 PSU we use for testing purposes only. The computer didn't shut of again during a
3 Day Continous Test, we conduct for such problems...
yeah my PC never lasts over 1 day and that has only happened once.
Quote from: EdwinGF on 23-September-05, 04:51:49
After that, we installed a new CoolerMaster® RealPower 550 PSU, on that computer , and tested the computer again for three
more days. Since then that computer has never shut down without warning.
    Now the questions are:
    * Have you tried another PSU ?
    * If so, does it do the same thing?
not yet but i definitely will now.  *sigh* i as hoping this would be something non-expensive. baa
let you know tomorrow or the next day...
Quote from: EdwinGF on 23-September-05, 04:51:49
If not, give it a try, in most cases it may solve the problem. If the problem persist, please come back and let us know.
By the way, one more thing: Is your RAM ok ?, Have you mixed different speed sticks ?
    Good luck
nope nope both sticks are the same. i am planning to switch out the memory for my high performance OCZ sticks but i didn't want them to get damaged in the cross fire. i have done some extensive memory tests for these sticks that i have had in there now and they come clean every time. more in a day or so. thanks again,

  • Help! K8n Neo Platinum wont finish posting

I have a k8n neo platinum, newcastle 3200, 1gb corsair 2-3-3-6 ram, Westen Digital 200gb sata drive, and an Antec Truepower 430watt psu. Everything starts up correctly, but after about 30 seconds the board just powers down. I can attempt to reset it, but it powers down after about 10 seconds afterwords. After each time, the power light stays blinking but nothing else happens.
I think this may be related to the wrong newcastle temp readings bug (I was able to power it on long enough to check that my chip temp was 60deg C, but the heatsink was cold). My fan is a Thermaltake Venus 12. I was going to attempt to bios flash it, but I can't even power it on long enough to do that.
Any help would be extremely useful.

Actually, it was a folse positive. Seems that my problem was a keyboard problem of all things. After switiching the power connector around, it still just died when I went to use the keyboard. So I switched to a different keyboard.
I am having another problem though. I'm trying to install an OS (windows xp) and am facing random lockups during the installation. And at times, the keyboard just won't respond in the bios.
Temps are more or less fine, I think. They were toping at 68 deg C (newcastle temp bug). I'm too scared to update the bios and have it just lock up in the middle.
With a new keyboard plugged in, the original problem goes away, but if I set the bios to halt on "all errors", instead of the default "all but keyboard", it post hangs with the error message "keyboard is locked out - unlock the key" which may or may not be related. I would really like to be able to use my other keyboard, but that's even worse.
If anyone could shed some light on the crazy keyboard issues and the random lockups, that would be great. This motherboard is really starting to frustrate me.

  • No post! 4 Red LEDS on Dbracket! K8N Neo Platinum.

I put together a brand new computer back in August with the K8N Neo Platinum as my motherboard. Here's a list of my components.
    Athlon64 3000+
    1GB OCZ 3500 DDR
    Sapphire 9800 Pro Radeon
    160GB Seagate SATA drive
    NEC DVD-RW
    ComproPVR TV tuner
    Vantec 400W PS
Anyway, the computer worked great until just after Hurricane Ivan came through. After our power came back on, the computer booted a couple of times, and then for no reason started giving me problems.
The computer would start up for about 3 to 5 seconds with 4 red LEDs appearing on the Dbracket. Then power would then shut off automatically. I have not changed any hardware or software. I do not believe it is PS related, as I have tried my current one in another computer without problems. Also, I doubt the processor is faulty. I can't think of  a reason it would just stop working. Please let me know if you've experienced anything similar and if you know of a solution.

probably a powerspike during the hurricane killed or almost killed a part of the pc, and it completely died right after.
you could have a pc store test the mobo, cpu and sorts....

Now, when ever i'm playing a game, at random time periods, the system will start looping the sound, and after a few seconds it will reboot. When it does this, the monitor will go into standby until it restarts, with the little amber light and everything. It does it more often on some games than others. The memory has passed a 24 hr memtest 86 with no errors, and this is the second psu i've tired and still get the same result. The psu in it right now is brand new. I dunno what to do. I'm tired of not being able to play my games b/c of this. The heatsink on the CPU is stock. Also on the graphics card. Temps never reach above 47C on the processor and 65C on the GFX card. Please help me.
