K8N Neo 2 : IDE Long POST Problem NOT Solved !

CHECK LAST UPDATE At The bottom of the topic
I think I've won the battle...
I was having problems on Cold Boot with my IDE optical devices (CDRW (MASTER IDE 2)and DVD-ROM (MASTER IDE 1) looping their initialization procedure).
Here's what to do :
IN BIOS : Standard CMOS menu ->
Select your first IDE Peripheral (for example DVD-ROM) and in the IDE PRIMARY MASTER field, replace Auto with Manual. Same thing the other devices (for my CDRW : I selected it and in the IDE SECONDARY MASTER field, I set the Manual option).
Boot Winxp and go to the device manager, select the PATA controller and for Primary and Secondary chanel, uncheck "Let BIOS determine transfer mode" And select them yourself (for me it was UDMA 33 for my CDRW and UDMA 66 for my DVD-Rom)
And voilà !!! No more cold boot problems !
This proves that this is a BIOS problem that MSI should solve

Hi
OK, installed the update, and rebooted.
Went back into devices, and the yellow exclamation mark was still there.
So, I right clicked on it and chose the install driver option.  I chose the default "let windows find it for you" option, and it found and installed the following in the USB devices section:
Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
USB Root Hub
The yellow "Other devices" section was no longer there, and the Unknown device in the USB devices section was gone too.
Great everything looks good, except after about a minute, I got a popup "USB device not recognised" - One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognise it.  There is a list of 8 devices, with the third one down in the list being "Unknown device".
The only thing I have that is USB in my system is my Microsoft optical mouse, but that works fine.
Also, I rebooted again, and now Windows freezes during loadup (after the loading screen with the blue meter thingie I just get a black screen).  I rebooted again, same thing again.
So now I rebooted and chose the "Last known good configuration" and I am back where I started with the yellow exclamation marks in the device manager.
Am I missing something here, or does this sound like I have a faulty motherboard?
Thanks
Jooppy

  • Article says K8N Neo has SATA frequency locking problem

This article says that the K8N Neo has SATA frequency locking problems when overclocking:
    http://www.nforcershq.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1801
First of all, is this true?
And if it is true, do we have a BIOS that fixed this problem.
My drives are PATA right now so I currently don't have any problems but I plan to get SATA drives/adapters soon.
I'm running 240 HTT (1:1) so not having the SATA frequency locked could be an issue.

Well, I´m running HTT 230 now, and I´m always using my Raptor as OS disk. Haven´t had any problems yet (with my disk). It´s connected to s-ata_1. Haven´t tried the other ones.
But sometimes when I boot (200 or 230HTT, doesn´t matter) I get artifacts on the boot screen and in Windows, so I have to restart.
Could it be a partially working AGP-lock? It seems as at works most of the time, but sometimes not... Strange... AGP is set to 66-67MHz

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

    Hi gotmud,
I think you  may find your a little underpowered with your PSU.
What graphics card & drives have you plugged in.
See Basic Building Tips - Quote
As this pertains to A64's make sure that you have a power supply that is either approved for use by MSI/AMD or that you have plenty of amps on the 12 volt rail. Typically we have noted many issues based on stability with PSU's being rated at less than 24A on the 12v rail.
Until you get a stable system it would be best to work with just 1 memory module in slot 1

  • MSI k8n neo platinum hangs after post single beep

Today I powered off my computer, and when I tried to power it back up the x850 fan just runs at full speed, and never drops to idle and the screen stays dark. If I reset the bios then it will post as far as asking to press Del to enter setup, but freezes at that point. This thing has been running like a champ and this is the first problem I've ever had! I unhooked/unplugged everything but the keyboard/video/ram/cpu. Tried running with four different memory modules in single channel and dual channel but no luck there either. None of the hardware below has been changed in the last six months. Any ideas? TIA!

Core2Duo E6400 would be a gain of about 15% compared to 4000+ ( in games 1024x768, no aniso or aa). Quality options and better resolution would shorten the gain. Other applications than games e.g. cinebench would run a lot faster on the C2D. The main advantage compared to the 4000+ would be dual core because many future games will be optimized for this. Question is: Is this worth $272?
With only one 7600GT installed you won't be able to play most of the new games in full detail because of lacking 3d power although Core2Duo installed. The gain of cpu performance will be therefor useless (if main focus is on gaming). 7600GT sli-array would be an option for full detail and using more cpu power but it would also be slower than one 7950GT for nearly the same amount of money spent for 2 7600GT.
    1. If you need a gaming pc I'd only buy a new C2D if you can also afford high end vga. Otherwise cpu power is wasted.
    2. 7600GT is only an option if you want to save money now and you want a second one later. Buying two now to get a sli-array isn't very clever. Less performance than 7950GT, same price.
    3. Buying one gig of ddr2 isn't very clever either. More and more applications need more than 1 gig (for example vista!). When changing to ddr2, change to 2 gig dual channel kit.
    4. Getting $300 for your old stuff seems quite optimistic to me.
Conclusion: Save your money for better vga! Take back 7600gt, keep old vga and 4000+, wait for a little time and buy Geforce 8800 GTS. Increase of gaming performance would be unbelieveable. After providing high end vga you can upgrade to C2D in next step and receive a noticeable increase of performance in all kinds of applications.
Hmm.. very good points. I went and read some reviews of the upcoming 8600 and 8800. They are quite impressive for the money. I believe I'll return everything and find a limp-a-long $50 mobo to replace the dead msi. It looks like holding out for quad core with dual SLI is the real gain over my current setup. On a side note I won't be running vista until after sp1 or possible sp2. No tangible benefit to me! What suggestions do you have for a solid performing mobo for the following:
    socket 939
    4 240pin DDR slots
AGP (My X850 XT is still strong enough for everything I do)
SATA 1.5 (no need for the faster one as I have none of those drives)

  • K8n neo Platinum and Optical Drive problem?

I need some help figuring this out.  I've been searching for awhile but can't find any more information so I figured I'd ask here.
I have a Lite on LDW 411s dvd writer that is on the same ide channel as a lite on dvd player (labled as JLMS SJ-HD1665 in the device manager.
The problem is on the 411S where it will read the DVD/CD disk but when I try to use Cyberlink PowerDVD or Nero Recode to play or read the DVD it will just hang.  If I don't try to play these files and just open them in explorer then I can access them.
I'm trying to see if there are some conflict issues with the nforce drivers but am still looking.
    My setup is this.
    AMD 64 3000+
    K8n Neo Platinum nforce 3 250 Bios 1.4
    Western Digital 120 gb hd
    PQI 3200 1 gig memory
    PNY 6800 GT
    Audigy 2
    Antec Trupower 420
Any help would be great as I'm totally stuck.  Thanks.
Also to note I can play DVDs and use recode fine off the DVD rom drive but just not off the DVD writer (411s).

You might have better luck making the reader the slave on the channel your HD is on. I had both a burner/writer on the same channel and while it worked, the performance was very poor.
Man, I need to get around to posting my specs someday, but I have the same MB and BIOS as you. I'm also using the nForce unified drivers including IDE.

  • K8N Neo-V v2.0 Serious Problems in Windows

I am on the verge of sending the board back for a full refund. That being said, here are the details of my issue.
    System specs:
    K8N Neo-V v2.0 Bios v 5.3
    Asus GeForce 6600 LE
    2 512MB sticks of generic pc-3200 ram
WD 80GB, Maxtor 60GB IDE drives
    Toshiba/Samsung CDR/DVDR drive
    Using onboard lan/audio
The problems I'm having are that now I have Widnows Pro SP2 installed and nothing works. Enabling the Audio/Lan/USB in the bios makes the secondary cd/dvd drive not work giving an error in the device manager that it can't find enough resources to start the device. The Lan seems to install but does not get an ip address and does not work with an assigned one. The audio says it might be installed but still has yellow splats all over and does not work. The USB simply doesn't showup either.
The video card when I install the latest nvidia drivers seems to go thru the install, then when it reboots it doesn't use the drivers. In the device manage it says "your computer's firmware or bios does not include enough information to properly run and configure this device, code 35"
I am pulling my hair out because I'm certain these are ALL chipset problems with the nforce3. The ram is generic but is working fine and would not cause problems like this.
If anyone can shed a little light, that would be very appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
Note: I forgot to mention that all SATA/RAID stuff is disabled in the bios. When you disable the AUDIO/Lan/USB the secondary cd/dvd drive works fine but of course everything else is disabled.

  • Help! K8n Neo Platinum wont finish posting

I have a k8n neo platinum, newcastle 3200, 1gb corsair 2-3-3-6 ram, Westen Digital 200gb sata drive, and an Antec Truepower 430watt psu. Everything starts up correctly, but after about 30 seconds the board just powers down. I can attempt to reset it, but it powers down after about 10 seconds afterwords. After each time, the power light stays blinking but nothing else happens.
I think this may be related to the wrong newcastle temp readings bug (I was able to power it on long enough to check that my chip temp was 60deg C, but the heatsink was cold). My fan is a Thermaltake Venus 12. I was going to attempt to bios flash it, but I can't even power it on long enough to do that.
Any help would be extremely useful.

Actually, it was a folse positive. Seems that my problem was a keyboard problem of all things. After switiching the power connector around, it still just died when I went to use the keyboard. So I switched to a different keyboard.
I am having another problem though. I'm trying to install an OS (windows xp) and am facing random lockups during the installation. And at times, the keyboard just won't respond in the bios.
Temps are more or less fine, I think. They were toping at 68 deg C (newcastle temp bug). I'm too scared to update the bios and have it just lock up in the middle.
With a new keyboard plugged in, the original problem goes away, but if I set the bios to halt on "all errors", instead of the default "all but keyboard", it post hangs with the error message "keyboard is locked out - unlock the key" which may or may not be related. I would really like to be able to use my other keyboard, but that's even worse.
If anyone could shed some light on the crazy keyboard issues and the random lockups, that would be great. This motherboard is really starting to frustrate me.

  • Have you sucessfully overclocked you K8N Neo FSR? Plz post details.

    Hi guys !
Im still stuck with my system that does NOT want to be overclocked so I wanted to know if I'm the only one or not ?
If you have managed to overclocked you system using K8N Neo FSR please post you details.
And I'm also looking for tips on how to bypass issues related to unsucessful overclocking.
    Thank You.
I've managed to do this so far...
    A64 3200+ NewCastle CG-stepping @ 210x11 vCore 1.55
    Corsair Value Select DDR 400 @ 3-3-3-8-2T VDimm 2.70
    using official BIOS version 1.4
    But that's it...
If I increase vDimm above 2.75 = NoBoot/Unsucessful Windows Login
If I increase FSB above 210 = NoBoot/Unsucessful Windows Login
    If I set FSB 230x10 = NoBoot/Unsucessful Windows Login
If I set timings to higher values e.g. 3-5-5-10 = NoBoot/Unsucessful Windows Login

    Gen,
I found a few interesting things last night.  1st, I was having a problem with my CPU and Northbridge fans throttling down to about 1/3 speed after a few minutes of use.  I disabled the Northbridge and CPU target fan settings in BIOS.  You can find these options in the System Health menu of your BIOS.  Also, if you have enabled the "Optimized" option in your BIOS, please disable it and set to "manual".  The only option I've found to help is to select "Aggessive" timings for your memory.  It doesn't change your speed in the BIOS for some reason, but it does do something else because my memory bandwidth is about 60 more with this setting enabled instead of disabled (3430 Int / 3430 Float in Sandra 04 versus 3493 / 3496 with the setting enabled.  OF ALL THINGS MAKE SURE TO DISABLE THE "OPTIMIZED" function and leave it set at manual.  Also, shoot me your current memory timings one more time.  Are you using BIOS rev. 1.4?  Let me know.  Sorry it takes so long between posts, but I check from both work and home and it's usually several hours between getting chances to check for updated posts.  I didn't have to reduce the HT setting on my overclock (I'm still running 4X), but I've read several posts where a setting of 3X will help if you're having problems o/cing.  Also, on your memory timings make sure and set your DRAM to FSB ratio at Auto.  This allows the memory to sync with your FSB speed.  And, I don't remember if I mentioned it before, but be sure to set your AGP speed to 67 (66 is the default).  At a setting at 67 it will positively lock your PCI and AGP clocks to 67 and 33 respectively, making sure that you aren't overstressing any of your PCI devices or you video card.

  • K8N Neo Platinum and Maxtor HD problem

I have a K8N Neo Platinum MB with the v1.3 Bios installed.
    I have 2 physical HDs:
IDE Primary Master: 120G Western Digital WD1200JB (7200RPM)
    IDE Primary Slave: 120G Maxtor 6Y120L0 (7200RPM)
The MB sees both drives in the BIOS, however, in Windows XP, I only see the master drive. The slave drive is not recognized within windows. I tried finding the slave drive with the MS Computer Management application and PartitionMagic as well - neither can see the slave drive.
There is something strange about the BIOS screen.
You can see that the primary master is highlighted (in red). The primary slave drive is visibly but it's not showing properly. You can see that the name of the slave drive is all the way to the left and the "]" character is all the way on right panel, next to "Press [Enter]". The name of the slave drive is wrong. The BIOS is showing something garbled. It looks something like "8t/r 6!128". It's tottaly confused :(
I can even select the primary slave drive:
    That's not right!
Pressing enter on the slave drive shows the slave drive (Maxtor 120G) properies:
However, Windows XP will not recognize the slave drive.
I ain't sure what wrong but it appears to be a BIOS problem - why would the BIOS display be so messed up like that ??
I'm not sure what to do.   :(

Yea, I'm really mad because not only will this board not recognize my slave driver properly, it may have also killed my X800 Pro video card
I moved my working X800 Pro video card from my old MB to my new one and when I turned it on, the X800 Pro was dead.
I then reinstalled my old MB, hoping it was merely a faulty MB that was the problem, however, my X800 Pro is quite dead now
I'm not sure if it was me who damaged the X800 Pro or it was the MSI K8N motherboard - either way it's dead
My experence so far with my new MSI MB has been horrible !!

  • K8n neo platinum and hard drive problem...

    greetings...
well, I have K8n neo platinum mobo with SATA1 controller, and I bought WD 250 GB sata2. I did set up jumper to limit transfer to SATA1 mode on my new drive (although I tried it without jumper, it is the same). Hard disk is working but, I have varying trasfer rate when I copy files from WD250 on other drives, and when copying on that drive. Transfer is going fine, and then it goes very very slow, then again fast, then again slow...And, sometimes, when I am copying large amount of data on that drive, my computer freezes. When I test sustained speed, it is different almost every time (goes from 14 to 65)...
I searched thru internet - with no sucess. I have very good power for my PC. I changed sata cables, and power cables. I updated all drivers. I tried installing XP IDE drivers for that new SATA2 hard disk. I tried almost everything, and with no sucess. WD250 is working fine for, let's say, a couple of hours, and then it again goes slow with varying transfer rate when copying. I also have a very good cooling system, so it's not because of overheating. I contacted WD, they told me to run their diagnostic tool, and the disk was healthy. They said that drive is ok then, and that it is probably my mobo that is causing problems.
anyone have a clue what is going on?
    thanx in advance

    damn...
can't believe no one ever had similar problem...

  • K8N Neo FSR - IDE Trouble (I think)

    Hi.
I got two identical systems I try to setup, and it has been nothing but trouble for the last 2 days. All following descriptions goes for *both* systems.
Installing XP Pro with SP2, fresh. Getting read errors from CD's, then write errors on HD. Blue Screens and instant re-booting.
PFN_LIST_CORRUPT 0x0000004E is the first to occure
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR EQUAL 0x0000000A is the next.
2 brand new intallation disks used.
Installing W2k, ...see above, same happens.
Tried with both hitting F6 and installing the provided drivers on floppy, and using Windows default drivers. Same result.
Tried disabling all SATA/prefetch/NIC/USB/whatever in BIOS, same result.
Tried Crucial / Corsair / TwinMos / No-branded RAM, same result.
    Tried ThermalTake 480W, Q-Tec 450W and Chieftec 420W
Tried with shipped BIOS 1.1 and 1.40
HD strapped as CS or Master, CD strapped as CS or master...tried all 4 combos, but install somehow 'made it' with both set to CS on separate channels.
Ok. Now the OS is on the box:
    W2k - Login - BSOD - Reboot
XP Pro SP2 - Looks fine, just do NOT touch the disks:
    Defrag - Reboot
    Install e.g. Office - Reboot
    Norton AV-scan - Reboot
Memtest 12 hours - No problem
Anyone got any idea of what is going on here???

    Hi.
Yes I've tried, but all but CS is making things worse.
I just rippet out the MOBO from one of them an hour ago, and replaced it with a K8N Neo Platinum, using the drive as it was. Same jumpers - same OS. And guess what: XP found a bunch of new hardware, and the machine has just completed its first virusscan. No problems at all.
Guess this just confirms that there is an issue with the Neo FSR. I've setup a bunch of the Platinums before, but this was my first (and very last) two FSR's

  • Another K8N Neo 2 won't post thread!!

    Hi Everyone,
I've been reading all the threads regarding the old Neo 2 not posting problem ever since i got mine in October and it didn't post.
At first it worked sporadically, which was a pain, but bearable.  The one day it wouldnt start for love nor a good kicking, just a few seconds of fans and that's it.
I've tried 3 keyboards, 1 of which i went out and bought.  No joy.  I've tried 4 power supplies, admittedly 2 of which where never going to be powerful enough, but still no joy from the one in my sig, even when running 'barebone' just the graphics card, memory and CPU.
I took the board back to the shop, they tested it and it only went and worked!!!  This was during the period that it worked on and off though, and now it isnt working at all!!  All the other components work in other computers, so do you reckon its a dead board?

    wougle,
I'm doing my sherlock holmes bit
Maybe the components that weren't used in the shop
    1) PSU - At present prime culprit - is it possible to test it either with 2600m set up or at shop.

  • MSI K8N Neo Platinum with Vapochill Case problems - Help anyone. :)

    Hi all,
Had a bit of a tricky problem and as Im new to this board I have no idea what could be causing this.
    First all all system specs:
    Athlon 64 3700+ Clawhammer
    MSI K8N Neo Platinum -
1 gig Corsair XMS ProL Low Latency Ram (2 x 512mb)
    Nvidia Gefore 6600GT
    1 x WD Raptor 10000rpm HD
    NEC 2500a DVD writer.
    Eye-T 550w PSU.
Vapochill SE Case with installed Vapochill Phase change cooling.
Here are photos of it in its present state, you will notice that it isnt installed in the case at the moment.
The reason for that is because the two wont work together and I want them to so so bad...
So, hopefully someone here can save the day for me - here goes.
I have tested the Motherboard and all other componants outside of the case and everything runs smoothly and there are no problems what so ever, great.
I have also retested the Vapochill case with another motherboard and that also works without a hitch.
The problem comes when I insall the MSI board into the system, all hooked with a really basic setup, PSU, Case cooling, CPU and Ram. Flick the on switch on the power suply and the system turns on for around 1/2 a second then turns off again. I found this strange because it soundnt come on at all until I press the power button.
If I press the power button the same thing will happen over and over.
I have tried a different powersupply and this does nothing at all.
I have checked for shorts and there is no possible way it is shorting on anything.
I have a fan plugged in where the CPU fan would go and this doesnt help.
I have taken it back out and tested it again and it still works ok.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? Are there any secret Bio's menu's that would have an option that would solve this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Glenn

When you are running the MoBo standalone, what are you connecting to the Power, Reset, HDD, etc. pins ?  Are you using the wires from the Vapochill case, or something else ?  It looks like a single cable with an intermittent switch (red/white cable).  I once had a similar sort of problem and it was because I hadn't connected up (the incredibly fiddly) cables correctly.  Other than that, I would have gone for a short of some sort - but you have checked that already, so . . . .
As to the system starting to power-up when you switch on the PSU, I wouldn't worry too much about this.  It seems to happen from time to time with some of my systems - amongst other things, the BIOS can be set to resume to previous state after a power-fail.

  • K8N Neo Platinum VERY Slow POST

    Hello,
I have a K8N Neo Platinum and have been running it successfully with win2k for a few years now.  My system went down and I decided to update everything when putting it back together.  I'm using Win 2K and trying to get XP64 to work.  A long story short is that I used Live Update to download the latest BIOS.  V2.1 dated 11-11-05.  Ever since then the board takes AGES to boot.  From the first beep to the completion of memory test is about 5 minutes.  After that everything works just fine.  During the 5 minute delay there is nothing I can do to get it to respond.  There is nothing on the screen indicating that anything is going on.  Quickboot is enabled in the BIOS.  I tried stepping back to the 1.9 bios and still the same issues.  Unfortunately I didn't backup the working BIOS.  :(
I'm pretty stumped on this one.  If anyone has ever seen this problem and knows how to help that would greatly be appreciated.

Tried to reset the bios by removing the cmos battery and leave it for 10 minutes and set the default values. Tried to avoid using the the liveupdate as it causing a lot of problems. Used the manual way to flashed our bios is better. I'm sure that you've selected the wrong bios when you flash it.
ps: please create your rig and put in your signature including the psu and bios revision so others can help you.
