K8N Neo 2 Memory Question

After installing 1 x Ultra 1024MB PC3200 DDR 400MHz Memory alongside 2 x Corsair XMS PC3200 DDR 400MHz Memory, the computer does not boot up at all.
However, after some testing, two configurations have been found to work:
1 x Ultra 1024MB PC3200 DDR 400MHz
or
2 x Corsair XMS PC3200 DDR 400MHz
Thus, is it impossible to set up three memory sticks at one time? Would buying another 1 GB stick remedy this situation, so that all four slots are filled up? Is it perhaps something to do with dual channel system?

you cannot use three sticks, full stop

• K8N Neo Memory problems

I'm having problems with my K8n neo and my Corsair 3200 DDR. The system will boot and run stabaliy with just one stick of 512mb. It doesn't matter which stick I use or which memory slot I use all are stable. However if I try to boot with 2 sticks for a total of 1gb ram, the system will not boot. I just get a long beep from the speaker. I have tried all possible arangements of two sticks in three slotts, but nothing works. I flashed the bios from 1.1 to 1.3 but that didn't help. I tried increaseing mem voltage but that didn't help either
System:
K8N Neo 7030 ver 1
AMD 64 3000+
mem 1) Corsair CMX512-3200PT ver 1.1; 2) Corsair CMX512-3200PT ver 3
P/S Zalman 400W
OS - XP home SP1
The system is not OC at all

According to Corsair, it is not reccommended to mix revisions of the same type memory.  It can, and usually does cause instability.  If I were you I would either RMA the sticks to Corsair, in hopes of getting two of the same revision, or at the least send RamGuy a message at this forum:  Official Corsair memory support forum
I hope you sort things out, and good luck.

• K8N Neo2 memory question

Im building my new system
AMD 64 3800+
MSI K8N NEO2 Mbo
1 gig dual channel Corsair 400
Ati X800XL
Audigy 2 ZS
The memory I bought is dual channel PC 3200 for 400 speed.
Now in the BIOS I only have option up to 200 frequency speed .
The available options are 100, 133, 166, and 200
Is this correct?
Now there is another option called High Performance mode.
here I can adjust the memory up to 400.
I havent touch this because I dont know if its here where I can increase the speed or not, I rather ask first.
Thanks a lot

The first option you mentioned is to set the frequency for the CPU. The second is to set the frequency for the memory. So if your CPU is a 200MHz set that at the first option then x 2 for the memory option.
Good Luck

• XP 64 + K8n neo plat question

Will the very newest nforce drivers for windows XP 64 work for my board??

If you mean the 'standalone' nforce4 drivers on the nvidia website I believe so?
Only don't install the nvidia sound drivers coz the NEO plat uses creative.

• MSI K8N NEO Memory Issue!! @200MHZ??

Well Im having Errors again.. Disappointment yet again Though Im pretty sure what the problem is but Dont really know how to fix it through bios with this Motherboard.. It says My Memory is @ 200.. and I get this Messege in windows ''PNF_LIST_CORRUPT'' ... happens occasionally not very often now.. it was the same problem i was having a while ago.. Now Im pretty sure its memory.. Is it because its at 200 and not 400? or am i wrong? LMK Thanks!

Formalentity, if your having to run the memory on CAS 3 and slow timings then it's really going to have a negative effect on your system. The ram could be faulty do as Tiresmoke suggested (if you haven't already) and run memtest86+. If there are no errors then it means your memory is.. well crap
Oh Pinochio, I wouldn't worry about your memory problem I had the EXACT same thing and had to put my 1 stick of 512 ram into dimm 3 in order for it to work right (originally tried Dimm 1). I got another 512 stick a few days back and put it into dimm 1 (with the other stick still in dimm 3) and my system is running flawlessly.
Seems you have to have memory in dimm 3 and then you can add more to dimm 1 without problems.

• Question for those with memory issues on k8n neo plat

I have been having issues with my memory on the k8n neo platinum board since i built the system last month and i just recently discovered a fact I had overlooked.
I Have discovered that  if i test the system while it is cool (having sat turned off overnight for example), then memtest will pass the ram just fine and the system will be stable for a short period of time, generally longer if no intensive applications are used, ie. doom3 vs. websurfing).
This system, once it heats up ( seems mostly to be the nvidia 3 nb that needs to be "hot"- that is, a probe placed in contact with the module reaches about 58+ degrees c) then the system becomes unstable and memtest, if used, fails.
Prime95, if used on it when its cool, will usually take about an hour or so to fail, but if its used on the system when its been running a bit ( temps from nb at 58c+ and memory module hot to the touch) then it fails after about 20-30 seconds.
I have placed an active hs on the nb in an attempt to correct this, but temps still remain high with failures occuring.
I have spent the better part of three days testing the sytem this way and the above facts have held true in all these tests.
I have  tested at stock ratings ( not using "auto" in bios, but using "approved ratings" of 10 x 200 for fsb and timings of 2-3-3-7 for my ram at 1:1 (which is recommended as well) since i am testing for base stability at this point;Voltages have been left at auto settings, however.
I was wondering if anyone else with memory issues could try this out and post if this seems to be the case for you as well.
Perhaps the memory issues on these boards are directly related to a problem with the nvidia 3 chipset running too hot?
Does anyone have a memory issue with these boards who is using water cooling on the NB ?
     Lack of issues from people using 'problem" memory, but having no failures with water cooled nb's would support my assumption.

Yes i did mean chipset.
I am using a stock hs/fan from amd, which seems to run a tad hot but, considering that I wont overclock until I can get board stable, its not an issue. (runs 35-40 idle and up to 72 intensive). I need the warranty more then the extra mhz at present.
I removed the stock heatsink from the nvidia chipset and bought a generic chipset cooler (green, very little in the way of fins and seems to be aluminum) with a small fan.
     I used a generic silver paste from Compusa to adhere both the cpu hs and the chipset.
I didnt lap either hs, just installed each as per instructions on artic silvers website (figured it had to go on the same way even generic).
I also bought a kingwin thermal center which i ran probes from to the cpu, case, and nb chipset.
     I am not using it to adjust fans so those arent connected - its just a reference temp I can see at a glance, esp considering the funky bios reading this boards been known to give.
I assume from these responces that even a nvidia 3 250 chipset shouldnt get as hot as mine?
I asked about that from the retailer i bought this from but he seemed to think it was "ok" at 50ish celcius, but then again he didnt look too confident when he said it, lol.
Idle right now reads on Corecenter at 28 celcius for cpu and 33 celcius for the chipset, although, I have readings of 37 c and 43 c from the kingwin thermal center, which i believe to be more accurate.
My voltage reads at 11.67 for the 12v line at idle right now.
The psu i got is stick from the xblade case i bought in store. (http://www.xoxide.com/xblade2.html)
I have a dvd burner, cd drive, and two maxtor ide hd's attached to the system;The only card is the agp.
Is there a way to check and see if the cpu ispower starved? software monitor or even an external probe perhaps?
I havent put a probe on it, but the ram came in its own heatspreader, which gets very hot to the touch as well.
What temps should I be looking for on these items?

• MSI K8N NEO Platinum Edition memory question

Hi there,
I've currently got a MSI K8N NEO Platinum Edition (Nforce 3) motherboard and 2X 512 MB Corsair Value Select memory modules (both double sided) running at DDR 400 - this runs completely stable and has done for a number of months. I would like to increase my memory to 1.5 Gig but there seems to be a lot of issues?
I originally planned to buy an additional 512 Meg Corsair value select chip and place it in Bank 3 - is this acceptable?
I assue that i would have to drop the speed down to DDR 333 from 400, could anyone tell me how much of a difference this actually makes (when playing FPS games Doom3 etc..) ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as i've been looking through both this forum and the Corsair one and i cant seem to find the answer.
thanks in advance !

Just note that there are combinations of two sticks that will also make the board run in DDR333 mode (see page 2-8 of the manual). For example, using two double-sided sticks in DIMM2 and DIMM3. I've actually managed to get it to work at DDR400 in those two slots, but it's not perfectly stable and overclocking diminishes drastically. Bottom line is the system will work fine when forced to DDR333...as long as you don't expect to overclock the RAM to any significant degree.

• K8N Neo Platinum Bios 1.3 Question

This is bit of a dumb question..... I am not a noob either, been building computers for 6 years.
I have a K8N Neo Platinum with AMD64 3000, 1 GB Corsair Value Ram, 160 GB Western Digital ATA Drive, ATI 9800 Pro 128MB Catalyst 4.7,   LG DVD Drive and NEC 2510A DVD burner, Windows XP Pro with SP 1a.
Tried to get into Safe Mode the other day ( to uninstall the video driver with Driver Cleaner) ...Hit F8 while booting , got the standard menu for safe mode, picked the standard "Safe Mode " option....then the computer restarts.
So I can't get into safe mode
I went back to the MSI website to get bios version again....then I saw this for Bios version 1.3 which I have on my board....
Quote
System reboot to safe mode when "Insert" key pressed
Does this mean, instead of hitting F8...you hit the insert key , or does this mean hit F8, chose the menu selection you want , then hit insert while it is going through the boot process.
Thought that I would ask?

The "safe mode" that the BIOS message refers to is not related to Windows' Safe Mode. The BIOS safe mode lets you un-do any overclocking or memory settings that might make your computer so unstable that you can't even get into the BIOS settings to change them. In that case, you hold insert while powering on to reset the BIOS to default safe values.
As for your problem getting into Windows' Safe Mode. If you upgraded from another motherboard that uses a different chipset, or if you somehow got the wrong chipset drivers installed, then the old AGP GART or chipset drivers will cause the system to halt/reboot very early in the Windows boot process even in safe mode. I've run into this problem before and its tricky. Best thing to do is switch back to the old motherboard, then go into safe mode and remove all chipset-related drivers, and then switch back to the new motherboard. If you can't do that, try running system repair from the windows setup CD. And failing that, you'd probably have to fully re-install the OS.

• Memory Corruption on K8N Neo Platinum - HELP!

I am having some problems with my cousin’s computer that I built for her last September.  She brought me the computer because she got an error that the system32/config/system file was corrupted and couldn’t boot the computer.  I got the file replaced and got the computer re-updated to where it worked.  Then the same thing happened again.  This time I did a Windows reinstall and the computer acted a little sluggish and iffy so I did a memory test.  I found the memory was all corrupted.
First here are the pc specs:
MSI K8N Neo Platinum with 1.7 bios
Athlon 64 3000+
120GB Seagate SATA hard drive
NEC DVD Burner and Samsung DVD ROM
Radeon 9550
512MB Corsair Value Select 2.5CL DDR400
Antec 350W psu and Antec Case
I ran Memtest86+ v1.6 and the Corsair stick had errors in Test 3, 4, 5, and 7.  In tests 3 and 4 there are 50 errors but at the 98% of Test 5, the errors jumped to 146,432 and they were 500.8MB part of the stick.  I got the same results when I moved it to DIMM2 slot.  I also get the same results when the HT is at 1x or 4x.
I tried a known working 512MB stick from my sisters Athlon XP 2500+ pc in the A64 pc.  It is a Mushkin PC3200 Basic stick.  I get errors only at 98% of Test 5 which amounts to 109,568 errors.  Same results in DIMM2 slot.
But when I test the Mushkin in my sisters pc, it has no errors.  But the Corsair stick in the AXP pc gets errors on Tests 1, 3, 4, 5 (only at the 98% mark), 6, 7, 8 but only a total of 317 (a lot less than 146,000 in the A64 pc.)
So, I know the Corsair memory is bad, but now something is also wrong with the motherboard and /or cpu right?
If you need any more info let me know.  I’m new to the forums and they look very helpful.
Thanks.

Look in the bios and loosen up the RAM settings. Make sure the RAM isn't being stressed into settings that are too hard for it to handle.
See I told you to loosen it up...
I speak from experience as the same happened to me and loosening settings stopped errors.
Glad you managed it, well done...

• RAID Question? K8N Neo...

I just purchased the K8N Neo Platinum and noticed right away that my Maxtor 6Y08OMO 7200rpm SATA HD has just became a speed demon.. It now beats my 15K rpm Cheatah and my Raptors... My question is can I have two completely diferent RAID arrays? One for Windows XP on the two Raptors and one with the two Maxtors for high speed storage/video editing stuff???
Maybe like this:
SATA 1/2 = Raptors in RAID 0
SATA 3/4 = Maxtors in RAID 0
Can I do this on the K8N Neo Platinum?
If I can do this than I will be getting a second Maxtor right away...
Thanks in advance...

You can.
You should look into raid 0+1 for the raptors though.

• MSI K8N NEO Platinum Edition Memory plz help!

Hi
http://www.datorbutiken.com/se/defa...2X512DDRCA400PR
Is this memory ok with MSI K8N NEO Platinum Edition ?
If it is, do you know how well its oc:s?

He would be talking about this:
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=20-145-466&depa=0
But I wouldn't reccomend that memory mainly because I have heard mixed reviews about it. You can get the same (if not better) memory at either of these links, the only difference between the two links is the color of the heatspreader (as far as i can tell). This is the memory I have and it works very well, plus its much cheaper:

• K8N Neo Platinum Bios 1.3 XP 3700 heat question

i did do a quick search on here before posting this question but had a load of varying answers ... so
i have a K8N Neo Platinum Bios 1.3 an xp 3700 and core centre says the chip is at about 45 - 50 degrees when the pc is idle
this is with the stock fan that came with the chip and ive also tried a samurai heatsink and fan .... ive reseated and reapplied artic silver and also tried thermal pads as well and the temp on the processor always comes back as 45 ish degrees
is this normal as the pc seems to run ok and even after round of doom 3 the temps only seem to hit about 55
are these chips hotter now or is it a bios / thermal temp issue
cheers guys
ohh and nice forums BTW

yup, issue with temp reading -> 1.43 beta bios for K8N NEO pL.  for me 36-39 idle 42-45 after a doom3 session

• K8N Neo Pl - PSU RAILS question

Hi guys,
I have two supplies and want to know to use for my PC (K8N Neo Platinum with AMD64 3000+).  I have read around that the Wattage is not a true indication of a good PSU, so I am not using this reading.  I have read the Current (Amps) values from both PSUs, but they present the info in different ways.  Add to this the fact that I have no idea about PSUs, then it leaves me with much to learn
PSU 1 reads:
+3.3V
28A
+5V
38A
+12V
17A
-12V
0.8A
-5V
0.5A
Whilst PSU 2 is a little more confusing.  It has two current readings - one is Peak and the other Max:
+3.3V
Peak=30A
Max=18A
+5V
Peak=40A
Max=30A
+12V
Peak=20A
Max=16A
-12V
Peak=1.0A
Max=0.5A
-5V
Peak=1.0A
Max=0.5A
Can anyone help me understand the following:
For PSU 2, which reading should I take - peak or max?
Which of the 2 PSUs is better (I guess this depends on the answer to question 1 above)?
What is the meaning of the different rails?
How close to these values should the PSU stay?
Thanks in advance for any help

this is the most common question here on the forum it seems
lots of info on it here
a quick search will pull up hundreds of threads on psu`s
psu2 states max continuous at 16a 12v peak is 20a 12v
meaning it will spike to 20a but will only hold 16 for any length of time...
psu1 who knows weather it is max peak or continuous amps at those voltages !
whatever they both seem very weak on the +12v rail which "could and prob will" present problems with a amd64 system.
ok suggestions ( single rail )

• K8N Neo FSR/Platinum ... Crucial Ballistix Memory timings

I just switched out to some new Ballistix RAM and was wondering what volatage/timing settings are standard for the K8N Neo Platinum boards and what you use.  I can't find what it should be from crucial's site

when you overclock, the ram goes along, in an standard configuration. That memory is guaranteed to achieve an 1:1 stable 250MHz HTT (normal =200), so, insted of DDR 400 you got DDR 500.
You should put 2-2-8-2, as in the mems SPD, or, as I have it in default, 2-2-10-2. Actually, the 10 is faster than 5, just slightly. I think 2,65V should work for you at default (I have the neo2). If you overclock, I can go till 210Mhz 2-2-10-2, 279Mhz 2,5-2-10-2 and about 255Mhz 2,5-3-10-3, everithing with 1T command rate. They can do more with lasser timmings. The volts can go as high as 2,80 (standard) or higher. I have it at DDr 500 with 2,7volts
