K8N Neo 2 Platinum -- Hanging during boot --RESOLVED--

Heres the problem...
My system will hang during boot at anytime, from bios initalization to full windows boot (No BSOD ever and where the pc hangs in the boot proccess is totally random). And the only way to get past the hang is do a soft reset. I have to restart my system up to 3 times before I get a good boot, but once the pc is up and running, it stay running till I shut it down. (no hangs)
Now if I shut it down after the system has been running for a while, the pc will restart normally without any hangs. The hangs only occur after the pc has been down for a time.
I have reseated all the connectors, the memory (even tried different slots), add-in cards, cpu.
I have a clean install of Windows XP Pro (hard drives have been repartitioned and reformatted as NTFS)
All fans are spinning up fine, all temps are within norm, power supply voltages are within norm.
No phsysical signs of bad caps on the system board.
I ran ran Memtest86 for 18 hours striaght with no errors.
Ran CPU stress test with no problems.
No IRQ,DMA,etc conflicts found.
Windows records no errors during a freeze and I have checked for unwanted services/proccess as well.
I have tried min install to no avail.
Bois is retaining its settings (so bios battery is good)
I do not over clock anything. Bios is set to discover all important setting automaticly. (Bios setting are the same now as they were 6 months ago)
I am down to a possible cold solder joint on the system board?
This problem started to occur about a month ago.
If someone has seen this exact problem and has a resolution, well I would appreciate it if you passed along your knowladge
I am down to my last option of RMAing my system board. No. I have not replaced any components due to the fact I don't have extras lieing around nor can I spend the money just to troubleshoot :(

Ok I won't go into all the details of why I missed this but it turns out the northbridge heatsink fan had stopped spinning and thus the hangs during boot due to overheating (hhmmm, when I step back and look at this the symptoms point right to overheating).
This also expains why after several attempts at booting up, once the pc was up it would run like a champ. The chip would of course overheat and cause random freezes. Now due to the placement of the chip and the design of the heatsink once there was enough airflow over the heatsink the chip would remain cool enough to prevent further freezing of the system.
What helped to facilitate this is that I have a ducted fan system installed in the bottom of my case which directs a substantal amount of fresh air to the pci slots, the chip set and the AGI slot as well.
So what have we learned class?
1. check the obvious
2. do a complete physical inspection of your system
3. KISS  -- keep it simple stupid

Main Memory
  • Supports dual channel DDR 266/333/400, using four 184-pin DDR DIMMs.
• Supports the memory size up to 4GB
• Supports 2.5v DDR SDRAM DIMM
Due to the High Performance Memory design, motherboards or system configurations may or may not operate smoothly at the JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council) standard settings (BIOS Default on the motherboard) such as DDR voltage, memory speeds and memory timing. Please confirm and adjust your memory setting in the BIOS accordingly for better system stability.
Example: Kingston HyperX DDR500 PC4000 operates at 2.65V, 3-4-4-8, CL=3.
For more information about specification of high performance memory modules, please check with your Memory Manufactures for more details.
Manually adjust your ram voltage to 2.65 volts and then manually adjust your ram timings to 3-4-4-8-2T.
If that does not work then do as Richard suggested and strip down to a bar-bone system, this is CPU+fan, 1 stick of ram (try other stick and different slots as one may be bad), graphic card and PS-2 keyboard, if it boots fine without any problems then add one device at a time until you find the problem.
Post back results as there are more things one can try but lets start with the simple stuff and work up.

  • K8n neo 2 Platinum - Hanging at variousstages of boot.

    Hi
This started a few days ago, all of a sudden the mouse froze on the screen and everything locked up.  This was in aperiod when it wasn't being worked on.
The only wqy round was to restart it. Since then after a minute or two of use the same happens, it all freezes.  Re boots don't change a thing.
Now after reboot, the next time it hangs during boot up at various stages, sometimes at the Bios boot stage, pother times at the CPU initialisation ( Info taken from the LED's).  Next time it will go right in, satrtup and hang after a few minutes use.   I managed to get inot the BIOS setup at one stage, but this froze as well so I'm not quite sure what the cause is.
I have changed drives, swapped memory from my second PC, started up with a barebones setup, PS2 mouse and keyboard from a working machine.  I have tried everyrthing possible with swapping hardware to no avail.
System is 3 months old, no prior problems, I have scanned the drive for viruses,  spyware etc and it appears clean, saying that a second drive does exactly the same.
The only common denominator in all my hardware tests is the board.
I was considering a BIOS flash, currently has the 1.3 Bios, however the system freezes before I get chance to flash it, I don't want to risk being part way through a flash and it hangs.
Would it be worth clearing the CMOS ??????
I am at a point where I'm lost, any suggestions before I try and get a new board (If it is the board ????)
If you need any more information to help, ask away.
    Cheers
    Lee

    Hello,
This problem looks like the CPU is getting overheated.
     1. Check if the cooler is working fine.
     2. Check if the cooler is not clogged with dust.
     3. Check if ithe cooler is well seated, if not:
        a) Then take it out
        b) If needed,  clean it well.
        c) Apply new thermal grease and re-install it.
        d) Make sure it's well seated now.
     4. Unless you've overclocked your CPU too much, or not, I doubt your CPU could be the problem.
     Additional Comments:
     1. Take out your graphics card and check the fan is working correctly, and remove any dust from it.
     2. Check your graphics card AGP connector and also check your board's AGP port and clean them if needed.
     3. For RAM, take it out and check the golden contacts on it, be sure they're all clean 'n shiny, if not clean them.
     4. Check also the RAM banks for dust and blow it away with compressed air.
     5. Blow away any dust from the board. Dust is well know to cause strange and bad problems on computers.
     6. Be sure the board is correctly installed and fixed to your computer case.
     7. Also, be sure all other devices, being them Hard Drives, Optical Drives, Floppy, ZIP, etc. as well any PCI Add-On card are all fixed correctly.
     8. For both, SATA and IDE drives, be sure that the cables are fine. For this, remove the cables you're currently using and install a new cable.
See if the problem persists or not.
If everything fails, then your board could be bad. But that's yet to be determined. I hope this helps a little.
    Be well and good luck

    1GB (2x512) OCZ PC3200 Pt Rev 2
    GF 6800 GT

When I try to boot I get three reds in the diagnostic LEDs
    LED 1 - Red
    LED 2 - Red
LED 3 - Red (used to be orange)
    LED 4 - Off
This corresponds (at far as I can tell based upon the manual) to a problem during "Intializing Video Interface."  I've reset the CMOS, twice, reseated the CPU, and reseated the video card.  I think I can hear the HDD spin up getting ready to boot, but my fans are so loud it makes it hard to tell for sure.  Anyone experience a similar problem or have a solution?

    1) Turn cool and quite off. When I had it on I had trouble rebooting, I would get no video signal.
    2) Have cool and quite on and raise the Vcore to 1.55 volts (got this from another post).
I believe that having cool and quiet on is related to the rebooting issue as it messes with the Vcore. Hopefully a future bios release will fix it.
    Hope this helps.
I don't get a video signal at all.

  • BIOS Warning message : K8N Neo 2 Platinum

A strange phenomenon with my K8N Neo 2 Platinum
On Cold boot (and only on cold boot) My comp will hang during 30-40 seconds attempting to initialize My Optical devices (CDRW & DVD-Rom) on IDE channels (This occurs before the splash screen) Then the system will achieve POST (1 Beep from the speaker) but, here's the strange thing, bios tells me the following message : "Warning - System is now in safe mode ! Please reset overclocking features in setup"
Well I'm very surprised by this message because I'm not overclocking : All my BIOS parameters including memory timings are set to "Fail-Safe defaults"
Any one got an idea here ?
    A BIOS bug ?

    Weird....
what bios version are you using.  Rather than using fail safe, have you tried tuning your system to the actual specs of your CPU and memory?  What kinda mem and CPU do you have?

  • Boot Problem with K8n Neo 2 Platinum

I cant get my Computer to load the bios
Sometimes when I restart my computer it will lock up in the Bios Sign on and the only way to get it to boot through is to keep resetting the computer and turning the power off and on. It does this on a random basis, Ive also had problems with it locking up if the dynamic oc is turned on.
Has anybody heard of this happening or know how to fix it?

Can you please give your specifications on the power supply unit (PSU), especially the amperage on the +12 volt rail.

  • MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum. DOn´t boot

I have a problem with my MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum.  Yesterday I started to mount my computer and when I finished to install everything the computer does not bind.  It swims happens, the Motherboard this not obtaining to receive energy  .  Until my Power Supply it is not functioning, does not receive energy!  Somebody has some Idea of that it can be happening?  Power Supply:  Seventeam ST-420bkv Processor:  Athlon 3000+ venice.  OBS:  All the components are new.

    Well it wasnt the battery
The one I pulled from the board was reading 2.68v, the new one is reading 3.17v, but the problem remains :((
BUT, I discovered if I hold the case power button in while switching the PSU on fom the back that the CMOS details are fine after all?!?! Not pressing the case power button results in the no boot problem. Maybe the switching that disables the battery when the AC is on is broke ???
Its a weird one alright but I can live with it till my next upgrade - which wont be MSI - too many bugs. I have a Gigabyte board in my second PC and its rock solid, dual BIOS and never had a single problem with it - maybe that or ASUS next time round )
Hope this helps anyone else with a similar problem.
Would still like to know what the flashing led error is though??
many thnx for all the input guys.

I have replaced my motherboard as I had thought it originally was a duff BIOS chip as despite reflashing it, it would rarely pass the POST.
All parts apart from the PSU are the original Kit which had been working for 13 months ish.
Problem i am experiencing is the D-Bracket 2 Diagnostic LEDs are coming up Red/Amber as opposed to Red/Green and the machine just sits there and never displays anything, hence why BIOS isn't mentioned as I have no idea what version is currently on the BIOS chip.
I have stripped out down to just CPU and still get the same problem, I then swapped it for a FX53 which I had lying around which I know worked as it came out of my Vapochill chassis and also swapped out for some OCZ PC3700 512MB EB Dual Channel Platinum 3-3-2-8.. still no joy.
Any ideas greatly appreciated as I don't want to rebuild my machine as it is exactly how I wanted it I feel I have checked everything but maybe someone can shed a little light.
Anyone want a spare mboard or two ?? I now have three !

Your Tagan's behavior was typical of a failing PSU... but the Turb-Cool model you mention doesn't exist at the PCP&C web site; in fact there are a total of five other 510 models, some of which have only an 8-pin CPU power connector, so it's impossible to figure which one you have.  Does your PSU have a 4- or 8-pin CPU power connector and, if the latter, how do you have it connected to the mbrd?  The only 8-pin CPU power connector I've seen could not be connected to a 4-pin socket, which your mbrd has... or does your mbrd have both 4- and 8-pin?
The only other thing I'd remark is that Vista will not run satisfactorily with your nForce3 mbrd and an ATI video card.

  • Problem with K8N Neo 4 Platinum

Hi I am new on this forum.
I have problem with proper configuration of the BIOS in K8N Neo 4 Platinum. My processor is Athlon 64 3000. It has 1800 clock. My BIOS  makes default 200MHz x 5. It makes 1000 MHz clock. Will it be good if I change at 200 x 9?
Other thing: I tried to change at 200 x 9 but in Windows (2000) is still 200 x 5 (acc. to Core Cell). When I chanded on 200 x 7,5 all in Windows was ok. Core Cell showed 200 x 7,5. How I may resolve this problem?

  • MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum motherboard extra firewire ports?

I'm installing an MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum motherboard into my case and although I don't need them right now, I would like to be able to access the extra firewire ports. Does anyone know the best way to get ahold of the MSI motherboard 1394 connectors for J1394_1 / J1394_2 option?
I have the D bracket with the LED's and two extra USB connectors but I don't have the firewire connector. I have USB ports and audio ports on the front of my case which I will use, but no firewire connector, but there is a place for one, just no connector/wires or hardware. Also what is the difference between those two connectors shown in the picture of the optional firewire that appears in the owners manual? They have a different shape.
Where can I get one? I don't need the proprietary peice if I can use something else.

Fireware ports are faster for example external drives will be fastest 1394 rather than usb2.
there are many companies doing drive bays which can add ports to your current case see Front Port Extension Unit however you need to decide what exactly you want,
The example shown passes through case & connects to rear ports.
I prefer ones hich connect to the mobo risers leaving rear ports free, however you then have the complexity of matching the pin outs so that it works with your system. Remember it's not like tring to boot, you may not get a 2nd chance if you miswire connection. . If you can find them the best connectors are those with single pin leads, where each individual wire has its own plug so that you can match it to the mobo's pin out diagram for the particular port.
    luck

    not heard of that one.
    But it's easily sorted :-
    Bios - Onboard Devices
    OnBoard Sil3132 RAID
This setting controls the onboard Sil3132 RAID chip. Setting options: [Enabled],
    [Disabled].
    OnBoard Sil3132 Mode
This setting allows you to select either SATA and RAID mode for the onboard
Sil3132 RAID chip. Setting options: [SATA], [RAID].
just set OnBoard Sil3132 RAID to disabled.

  • K8N Neo 2 Platinum - installing xp problem

Ok guys i just installed a new K8N neo 2 platinum with a 3200+ s939 chip. Now i ran off the xp cd and i told it to format as ntfs, it did that fine and dandy. Now after that it starts to copy windows xp files and it does that fine, now it comes to the point where it has to restart for the first time. So i restart and after i let it go past the part where it says "Hit any key to boot off cdrom" or whatever, then it comes to booting off the harddrive and it says "operating system not found"

Could the difference  be because you have the neo and RC1 whereas I have the neo2 (1.4 BIOS) and RC2?
Don't think so most likely difference between destination drives, yours is a sports car, fast when it's running but quircky, mine's a transit van works even when old & abused.
Have you checked Western Digital Jumper Settings Pata & Sata even new drives have been known to have been jumpered wrongly.
Onlly other maybe relevent thing I burned my iso at x8 to try & maximise cd quality, have seen a few pps with xp64 cds they couldn't boot from on the ms 64 newsgroup. Don't know if your cd may have been slightly screwed if thats the echnical word for it

  • K8n neo 2 platinum corsair xlpro troubles

New to the forum so forgive me if I make any mistakes.
Ive been trying to find some info on the k8n neo 2 platinum, but I havent found anything related to my problem, only some info on the k8n neo.
The problem is that I have a 1 gig dual channel corsair xlpro kit, when installed in dual channel mode the computer wont boot, absolutely nothing happens.
Tried single channel mode and that works fine, both modules run at cas timinngs of 2-2-2-5 at 200 mhz (ddr400).
Ive tried turning up the voltage to 2.7 and 2.8, tried booting with more relaxed timings, but again the system just wont boot when using dual channel   .
Tried some corsair twinx xms c2pro memory but same problem, wouldnt boot.
even set everything on auto but that didnt help either anyone else having this problem or am I the only one and if anyone solved it plz plz plz tell me.
    Thnx

I have 2x512 of Corsair TwinX PC3200XL and both work fine on my 754 Neo at their rated timings.
Though my setup is only single channel and proves atleast the Corsair is compatible with our boards.
Unless you can test another 1gig of ram your in a tough bind as its very possible your chip is defective, obviously having the dual memory controller built in.
    goodluck

  • K8N Neo 2 platinum and raid

I made a post a while back asking about how to implement raid. I've read everything but still can not get the raid to work. I have set the raid up correctly in the bios or at least I believe I have. Loading Windows Xp with SP2 I press F6 and then after a while the system asks me to load a driver. I load the NVIDIA CLASS RAID DRIVER and NVIDIA NFORCE STORAGE CONTROLLER and after a while it then hangs on the screen when it says that windows is about to setup or something like that. If I only load the NVIDIA CLASS RAID DRIVER it does not hang but i don't have access to raid either. I have following system specs:
    1. K8N Neo 2 Platinum
    2. 650 watt power supply
    3. 1 gig dual channel memory
    4. Athlon 64 3800 venice core processor
    5. Three Western digital 160 GB SATA drives (two drives are on SATA 1/2 and one drive on SATA 3 right now)
    6. NVIDIA 6800 GT AGP video card
I have tried in the bios to set the raid to SPANNING, MIRRORING, ETC and nothing seems to work. It still hangs on the same screen. I tried raid with only two drives, moved the drives around to SATA 3/4. I still can't seem to get this to move past that particular windows XP setup screen if I load both of those drivers. Once Windows XP is already loaded I assume there is no way to implement RAID thereafter is there?

  • K8N Neo 2 Platinum Computer just...stopped working! Help needed please.

Hey all. About hmm, a month ago I built myself a new PC (first time I'd done it from scratch and got some useful help here) Specs were:
    MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum, A64 3200+ Venice, 1GB DDR Corsair Value, Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb, 40GB Hard Disk IDE, 80GB Hard Disk IDE, CD R/RW Drive and a Tagan 420W (23A 12V+) PSU.
Ok, it worked the day I built it just fine and has NO hick-ups or any indication of a problem for the past month. Running temperature was very cool etc. Now, I last turned it on about 24 hrs ago, downloaded some PDF files, shut it down. All was fine. Woke up this morning. Pressed the power button: ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. ZIp. No hum, fan movement, anything.
Now, considering it seems to have broken whilst being turned off. What could be the problem? So far I've tried:
        * Using a different power socket
        * Using a different plug
        * Reconnecting the power switch and motherboard power connectors
None of those worked. There wasn't a thunderstorm or anything so I don't think any kind of surge would have been the problem. I havn't tried manually shorting the power switch connectors. What's a safe way to do that? Any other suggestions? How can I test my PSU is infact doing something?
    Thanks

Try the easy way first, disconnect every cable from the back of the computer. Do a CMOS clear/normal as instructed in the manual. Connect the display(with power off), keyboard and power cable. Turn on PSU, press power switch, if it fires up, press and go into bios and do your settings, save and exit. Power off and connect the rest of your external stuff. Power up.
    >
No luck :( Is it likely that my PSU has fused/broken in some way since I'm getting no response or fan movement?

  • Ultra 5 Hangs During Boot

My Ultra 5 hangs during boot at the following point....
    setting default ipv4 interface......
I have tried resetting my router, unplugging the network cable, and nothing seems to work.
    John

jmorrissey3, is this a system that just suddenly stopped working, or is this a "new" system (it's not like Ultra 5s are really new) that you're trying to bring up?
If this is a new system for you to tinker with, you should just go ahead and reinstall the operating system. This will blow everything away, of course, but it's good experience if you've never done it before and it will guarantee that the system is clean.
If the data on there must be retained, you can boot from CD-ROM, mount the / partition, and look at some of the configuration files to try to isolate the problem. I would agree that it either is set up for DHCP and there is no DHCP server or there is an invalid NFS mount that is trying to take place.
