K8n neo 4 platinum - replacing chipset fan

i'm thinking about buying a k8n neo 4 platinum for my next motherboard. however i read on newegg that it has a noisy chipset fan and that it can't be replaced.
is it noisy? can it be replaced? if so, what would make a good replacement fan?
i appreciate your input.

I've put a Zalman resistor into my NB fan's circuit and the board's running fine, and has been 24/7 for over a month.  Noise was dramatically decreased.  However, I'm not using anything above stock voltage for the northbridge with this thing on.  Eventually I might pop it off and make sure the thermal paste is alright and properly applied, but I don't have the time right now and it runs fine.
where did you buy the Zalman resistor? how did you install it?

  • MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum Smart CPU Fan reports 0 rpm ?

    Hi
I have a MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum (MS-7125) motherboard with an Athlon 64 3700+ CPU and an Arctic Cooling Silencer Ultra 64 HSF.
In the BIOS setup, in the 'Monitor H/W' area you can set something called the 'Smart CPU Fan Target'.
o  If I set this to disabled, it reports a fan speed of about 2,280 rpm.
o  If I set it to 40°C, it reports a fan speed of 0 rpm !  (the fan is turning)
The MSI Core Center utility and Everest Ultimate also both report the fan speed as 0 rpm.
I assume that if I disable Smart CPU Fan, the fan always rotates at max. rpm; if I set it to 40°C, the fan runs at a slow speed until the temperature exceeds 40°C, at which point it speeds up (likewise if I set it to 50°C or 60°C).  However, the fan IS turning.
Can anyone explain this ?  I would like the reassurance of having the CPU HSF speed reported.
Incidentally , the PSU is an Akasa AK-P460FG
       (3.3v = 30A, +5v = 30A, +12v1 = 14A, +12v2 = 15A)

Very old post yes but I feel the need to reply anyway because I have the same problem myself.
Very strange and would be nice to hear if any more of ya guys out there can see the same.

  • 250GB harddisk work in MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum

    Hi!
    I have a pair of WD 250GB SATA2 16MB cache harddisks (WD2500KS).
Currently they don't work in my Asus A8N-SLI DLX (BIOS messes up LBA and CHS setting with them)
(smaller 120 and 160 GB hdds work flawlessly in that mobo)
So i am considering to switch to MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum.
can anyone confirm these babies would work in that mobo?
Are there any known issues with higher capacity harddisks on MSI nforce 4 boards ?
also i hear that the chipset fan is very noisy. Is that true?
The other option would be the Abit A8N Ultra which has the heatpipe design but i am not so comfortable with Abit, since there are too mayn rumors about them.
    Any ideas?

All parts apart from the PSU are the original Kit which had been working for 13 months ish.
Problem i am experiencing is the D-Bracket 2 Diagnostic LEDs are coming up Red/Amber as opposed to Red/Green and the machine just sits there and never displays anything, hence why BIOS isn't mentioned as I have no idea what version is currently on the BIOS chip.
I have stripped out down to just CPU and still get the same problem, I then swapped it for a FX53 which I had lying around which I know worked as it came out of my Vapochill chassis and also swapped out for some OCZ PC3700 512MB EB Dual Channel Platinum 3-3-2-8.. still no joy.
Any ideas greatly appreciated as I don't want to rebuild my machine as it is exactly how I wanted it I feel I have checked everything but maybe someone can shed a little light.
Anyone want a spare mboard or two ?? I now have three !

Your Tagan's behavior was typical of a failing PSU... but the Turb-Cool model you mention doesn't exist at the PCP&C web site; in fact there are a total of five other 510 models, some of which have only an 8-pin CPU power connector, so it's impossible to figure which one you have.  Does your PSU have a 4- or 8-pin CPU power connector and, if the latter, how do you have it connected to the mbrd?  The only 8-pin CPU power connector I've seen could not be connected to a 4-pin socket, which your mbrd has... or does your mbrd have both 4- and 8-pin?
The only other thing I'd remark is that Vista will not run satisfactorily with your nForce3 mbrd and an ATI video card.

  • K8N Neo 2 Platinum Computer just...stopped working! Help needed please.

Hey all. About hmm, a month ago I built myself a new PC (first time I'd done it from scratch and got some useful help here) Specs were:
    MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum, A64 3200+ Venice, 1GB DDR Corsair Value, Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb, 40GB Hard Disk IDE, 80GB Hard Disk IDE, CD R/RW Drive and a Tagan 420W (23A 12V+) PSU.
Ok, it worked the day I built it just fine and has NO hick-ups or any indication of a problem for the past month. Running temperature was very cool etc. Now, I last turned it on about 24 hrs ago, downloaded some PDF files, shut it down. All was fine. Woke up this morning. Pressed the power button: ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. ZIp. No hum, fan movement, anything.
Now, considering it seems to have broken whilst being turned off. What could be the problem? So far I've tried:
        * Using a different power socket
        * Using a different plug
        * Reconnecting the power switch and motherboard power connectors
None of those worked. There wasn't a thunderstorm or anything so I don't think any kind of surge would have been the problem. I havn't tried manually shorting the power switch connectors. What's a safe way to do that? Any other suggestions? How can I test my PSU is infact doing something?
    Thanks

Try the easy way first, disconnect every cable from the back of the computer. Do a CMOS clear/normal as instructed in the manual. Connect the display(with power off), keyboard and power cable. Turn on PSU, press power switch, if it fires up, press and go into bios and do your settings, save and exit. Power off and connect the rest of your external stuff. Power up.
    >
No luck :( Is it likely that my PSU has fused/broken in some way since I'm getting no response or fan movement?

  • K8N Neo 4 Platinum Questions...

I'm going to be upgrading to a 7800GTX soon and will have to replace my mobo which is a K8N Neo 2 Platinum. I am currently using an Antec True 550 ps, which has 30 amps on the 12v rail. However, it is only a single rail ps and it has a 20 pin connecter. I plan on upgrading to a K8N Neo 4 board and was wondering if my ps is still okay even though it's only a single rail. I read the sticky and it seemed to suggest that single rail was still preferable but I just wanted to make sure I wasn't mis-reading anything.  Secondly, does the K8N Neo 4 use a 20 or 24 pin header? If it uses the 24 pin will I be okay using my current ps which is only a 20 pin? Moreover, would I be advised to purchase a 20->24 pin adapter or should I just plug the 20 pin into it's corresponding pins?
    The rest of my system:
    Winchester 3500+
    DVD burner
    CD burner
OCZ 2 GB (2x1024) Platinum DDR 400 memory
    Haupaugge PVR 250
    WD 160 GB SATA HD
    Thanks for any advice

K8N Neo4 Platinum has compatibility issues with nVidia 7800 cards. There is a capacitor very close to the PCI slot which makes the installation impossible. You may search the forum for more info.
Your PSU is OK as long as you won't be overclocking as your card consumes a lot of juice/I'd still go for more Ampers on the 12V rail/. It's not really a problem whether you have 1 or 2 12V rails....The mobo uses 24pin header but 20 is OK as well....You don't need an adaptor for that.

  • Boot Problem with K8n Neo 2 Platinum

I cant get my Computer to load the bios
Sometimes when I restart my computer it will lock up in the Bios Sign on and the only way to get it to boot through is to keep resetting the computer and turning the power off and on. It does this on a random basis, Ive also had problems with it locking up if the dynamic oc is turned on.
Has anybody heard of this happening or know how to fix it?

Corsair memory is known to be troublesome with AMD64.
Nevertheless, if everything is set correctly, it'll work.  I've been running the LLPRO 3200 1GB kit at 220MHz without any noticable problems.  Run a couple of rounds with Memtest86+ to verify memory functionality.
Can you please give your specifications on the power supply unit (PSU), especially the amperage on the +12 volt rail.

  • Problem with K8N Neo 4 Platinum

Hi I am new on this forum.
I have problem with proper configuration of the BIOS in K8N Neo 4 Platinum. My processor is Athlon 64 3000. It has 1800 clock. My BIOS  makes default 200MHz x 5. It makes 1000 MHz clock. Will it be good if I change at 200 x 9?
Other thing: I tried to change at 200 x 9 but in Windows (2000) is still 200 x 5 (acc. to Core Cell). When I chanded on 200 x 7,5 all in Windows was ok. Core Cell showed 200 x 7,5. How I may resolve this problem?

  • MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum motherboard extra firewire ports?

I'm installing an MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum motherboard into my case and although I don't need them right now, I would like to be able to access the extra firewire ports. Does anyone know the best way to get ahold of the MSI motherboard 1394 connectors for J1394_1 / J1394_2 option?
I have the D bracket with the LED's and two extra USB connectors but I don't have the firewire connector. I have USB ports and audio ports on the front of my case which I will use, but no firewire connector, but there is a place for one, just no connector/wires or hardware. Also what is the difference between those two connectors shown in the picture of the optional firewire that appears in the owners manual? They have a different shape.
Where can I get one? I don't need the proprietary peice if I can use something else.

Fireware ports are faster for example external drives will be fastest 1394 rather than usb2.
there are many companies doing drive bays which can add ports to your current case see Front Port Extension Unit however you need to decide what exactly you want,
The example shown passes through case & connects to rear ports.
I prefer ones hich connect to the mobo risers leaving rear ports free, however you then have the complexity of matching the pin outs so that it works with your system. Remember it's not like tring to boot, you may not get a 2nd chance if you miswire connection. . If you can find them the best connectors are those with single pin leads, where each individual wire has its own plug so that you can match it to the mobo's pin out diagram for the particular port.
    luck

  • K8N Neo 4 Platinum 1.8bios any try?

    K8N Neo 4 Platinum  1.8bios  any try?
better 1.3? 1.6? oc and stableand less bug...anyone try this?

After using the 1.6 BIOS for quite some time (ref. to my signature) I am testing the 1.8 BIOS now for some days. It was introduced in the German MSI forum (here) some days ago and also other people already reported their first experiences:
    - works fine
    - some more options in the BIOS are available (e.g. disabling seeking for a floppy, RAID on all IDE drives + SATA drives)
    - however, only 4 memory dividers (100/133/166/200) available in 1.8 MSI final; some hidden options are available in the 1.8 MODBIOS from MurdoK (download 1.8 MOD BIOS here )
    - 6 memory dividers available in 7125XMOD18 BIOS thanks to MurdoK (download 1.8 XMOD BIOS here) (I have not tried this XMOD BIOS yet!)
    - does not solve the "219 BUG" for Winchester CPUs.
    - USB2.0 works fine, in contrast to some 1.7x BIOS versions
In fact, I have not found major advantages for my rig, however, it seems to be also not worse than the 1.6 BIOS, what I used before. So I continue to stick to it!

  • MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum Clarification of SATA

    Hi Folks!
Just some clarification from you guys in the know.
I have an MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum Mboard. The specs say it will run SATA drives and am looking to upgrade.
Now from shooping around for price i was presented with three options.
SATA 150 , SATA 300 and SATA II
I have worked out that SATA 300 and SATA II are superior to the 150 but is my board capable of running any of the three or is my choice limited.
My motherboard specs just show that it is SATA compatible but no further info.
    I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks in advance.

Q-Tex, All your nVidia SATA ports [1-4] are SATA II 300 mb/s and the Silicon Image SATA ports [5-8] are SATA I 150 mb/s. SATA II drive brands to consider are: Seagate, Samsung, Hitachi, WD [I know from personal experience that Seagate 's work]. I belive that there are still issues with Maxtors. If buying drives from retailer with a high turn over you will get a drive with the latest firmware [has the bugs worked out] and if you buy a drive that doesn't have the latest firmware it's not the end of the world - you can get a firmware upgrade if neccesary.

  • Please help! K8N Neo 2 Platinum instability problems

    Hi!
At the fall of last year I bought new computer parts for a new system, the heart of it being a MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum. Ever since then I have had some instability problems. I tried for a while to fix them, but after a while lost the energy and have just accepted them. Now, however, I want to give this forum a try for help. The instability is irritating and I've been thinking of returning the motherboard.
    The system consists of:
    MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum
    2 x 512 MB Kingston Hyper X PC3200
    AMD Athlon 64 3200+
    Gainward Geforce 6600GT AGP
Trust 514DX 5.1 Sound Expert Optical
    120 GB Seagate SATA HD
    NEC DVD-RW ND 2510A
    Zalman ZM400A-APF PSU
Nothing is overclocked. I also have a Terratec TV-card that I never use.
I'm running Windows 2000. I have the latest BIOS, 1.C.  I have tried many different Nforce drivers, right now I'm running MEI's nWare Release 06.05a.
The driver for the GPU is 91.28. Every other driver should be the latest there is.
The problem I have is that the system freezes up in Windows now and then. The "funny" thing is that I can run Memtest 86 for a whole day, Windows memory diagnostic all the way trough and I can play games (most of the time) for hours. I have also had the computer doing video compression for days and days, so I would say that it seems kind of rock solid. The freezes seems to happen (I'm guessing) when there is lots of communication going on over the southbridge. It often happens when the HD is working and the CPU perhaps get loaded at the same time, or for example if I'm ripping data from a DVD and starts doing something CPU heavy at the same time. That is an almost guaranteed recipe for freezing. Sometimes it freezes when I'm doing "nothing", but I guess it might also be when Windows is swapping, or something.
I remember reading about problems like this before, with other motherboards. I'm thinking that perhaps some BIOS latency thing could fix it. Perhaps a hacked/tweaked BIOS? Or is the motherboard in fact busted and needs to be returned?
Any thoughts, ideas or tips are welcome. Please help!
    Thanks in advance!
