K8N Neo 4F problems

Hi,
Recently I have just brought a K8N Neo 4F mobo and have been getting some weird problems with it. The following is my system system :
1. K8N Neo 4F
2. AMD 64 3000+ (Venice chipset)
3. Cosair DRR400 2x512MB (CL2.5) RAM
4. Sapphire Radeon X700 Hybrid 256MB PCIe
5. Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
6. Maxtor IDE HDD 40GB (ATA133) 5400 RPM 2MB
7. Maxtor IDE HDD 20GB (ATA100) 5400 RPM 2MB
8. Sony 16x DVD DL RW+RW- / 48x CDR
I have installed WinXP Pro sp2, Catalyst 5.9, DirectX 9.0c and drivers for Sound Blaster. I am using Norton AV 2005.
When I am working normally in Windows, the system is stable. When I start playing 3D games, a few minutes into the game and the system hangs. I got a black screen and pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL doesn't help. I have to press the reset button to reboot.
At the BIOS setup screen, I found the CPU Vcore voltage is 12.22V which is 0.22V above the standard. I am not doing any overclocking on the system.
Can someone tell me what is wrong?
Thanks.

Does your fast write is enable/disable in the BIOS? If enable try to disable it! Used CPUZ to identify your RAM setting and try to change it from the BIOS (recommended setting) http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php. BTW put your pc spec's into your sig!!
There is no fast write in my BIOS. The following is the RAM setting :

I have built 2 computers exactly the same.
    msi k8n neo plat
    512 corsair xms ddr 3200
    8og sata maxtor
    amd 64 3200
    128mb ati 9800 pro
    asus cd drive
When i tried to install windows xp pro on both the machines i got the same error. could not copy file. On each try the file was a different one. After hours of trying new things i found that putting the memory in slot 2 on the motherboard  solved the problem, windows installed and booted up as norm. When i moved the memory back to slot 1 the computer would not boot.
I have now left the memory in slot 2 but the computer will still crash every hour.
I am sure this is something to do with the memory but not sure what the problem is.
    Can anyone help.

Can anybody tell me what i should set the cpu fsb frequency to in the bios.
I just read this in the faq
What is the fsb speed of this cpu?
Depending on which FSB you are asking about: The Athlon 64's have the memory controller built in (which was previously part of the Northbridge on the motherboard) which uses up to 200MHz DDR Memory (400MHz FSB) The HyperTransport link from the CPU to the rest of the motherboard runs up to 800MHz. Just to expand on my answer... The HT link is 800MHz, but it's 16 bit in size (2 bytes worth of data per clock) the total bandwidth of the HyperTransport link is 3.2GB in total - 1.6GB sending data to CPU and 1.6GB receiving data from CPU.

I just recently started buying parts, about a week ago, to upgrade my old AMD Athlon 2000+. Got all the new parts(listed above). Ive been having all sorts of problems. Ill list them to see what you guys think
1.) Whenever i start playing games or a graphicly intense program(ex: video editing, or 3D programs) or if i play a game and i do any sort of loading(ex: zoning, changing levels, loading player models etc.). My game either crashes to the desktop without errors, or my system will crash and drop to a bluescreen with the stop error "STOP: 0x0000007E". Or ill get a different blue screen saying "Dumping physical memory" or something can't read it cause it just appears then reboots my computer right away.
Or just recently i crashed to my desktop but got an error box saying "There are stability problems with the Geforce FX 5700LE please check if you have the correct drivers etc."
Then just the other night i was playing a game and crashed to the desktop but got a virtual memory error saying "Ran out of Virtural memory etc etc. Please check your Virtual memory page file". So i did and increased it a bit cause i saw it was set lower than the actual amount of ram i have.
I guess it's just 1 big problem but im just so confused about it. Been trying to troubleshoot it for about a week and about to give up. This monday is my last day to return things back to the store, would rather not cause ive heard such great things about AMD 64's and the Neo Platinum board.
Hope you guys got some ideas Im just about out of them heh.
    Thanks.

Don't know if you have tried this things but heres my list of things .
    BIOS:
-First load bios optimized defaults , then ..
-Set the cpu vcore voltage up by + 0.025v (don't use auto)
-Increase the memory voltage vdimm to 2.7v (or the vendors max defined voltage)
    -Disable fsb spread spectrum
    -Disable dynamic overclocking
    -Disable cool n quiet
-Change the multiplier from startup to 11
-Turn off auto on memory timings in cell menu/dram and set all values manually
and the max mem frequency to 200.
    -Turn off AGP fatwrites
    CASE:
    USB connectors
-Disconnect case front usb from usb header on motherboard.
-Disconnect the d-bracket from usb header on motherboard.
-Change the red MSI ide cable if used.
-Check all stand offs/spacers under the motherboard .
-If using PS2 kb and mouse some board have mislabeled color code
making people connect mouse in kb and vice versa .
Correct is keyboard in the bottom mouse top.
    STABILITY TEST:
    Outside windows and windows drivers:
    Download and test with memtest86 v 3.1
    http://www.memtest.com
    Inside windows:
Test stability with prime95 and/or hotcputester

  • MSI K8N Neo XP Problems

I just got a MSI K8N Neo Platinum with a 3200 Clawhammer and a 160 GB Seagate Hard drive. Cooling is an SLK-948 with an Enermax 92mm 2800 RPM fan and a Antec 400 watt PSU. Ram, ive tried both 2700 and 3500. My system posts ok then i reformat but when it starts installing the setup files it gives me a blue error screen saying the system was halted. Ive also tried reformating on another computer. Then I just launch the XP setup from the A64 system. All goes well and everything installs until the very end i get the error screen again. I am not overclocking or anything, all bios settings are default as i just got this setup. Ive also tried my seagate harddrive on my other computer and it has none of these probelms.

Start by eliminating possible causes 1 at a time.
I'd start with the RAM.  Set your BIO's to default (compatability) settings.  Use 1 stick to start in slot zero.
If you have another PC to work with (w/ internet access) download and create a bootable CD with memtest86.  You can get it here:  Test Your Memory  If not, perhaps a friend can save it to disk for you.
It's a decent memory tester and has helped me on more than one occassion.  The last time with a 256mb stick of PC2700 Mushkin.  For some reason the FIC board it was on didn't like it.  Everytime I went to install XP it would fail in different places for strange reasons.  Since I'd used the disk successfully just recently before, I ran memtest86 and discovered the problem.
The next thing I'd examine is the CD/DVD-ROM drive(s).  I can't count the number of times I've gone to upgrade a machine, keeping the CD drive, only to discover XP doesn't like the drive.  If you're drive is older, buy a new one.  Don't install using a DVD drive (so they say - I don't have one).
If all else fails use the diagnostic LED's to try and track the problem.

  • K8N Neo USB Problem + Boot/Shutdown issues

I just bought the K8N Neo and I am having problems with it.
First problem is usb. Sometimes when I boot up my mouse and keyboard won't work. That only happens sometimes though. The bigger problem is, that usb devices (mouse and keyboard) fail randomly. Like I'd be playing a game, then I suddenly hear the sound that windows makes when you disconnect a usb device, keyboard and mouse are dead, and then 10 seconds later I hear the sound for plugging an usb device in and all is back to normal.
I've read some of the older threads where other people are having that problem too but I have not found a solution to this yet. I'm using the two usb ports that are attached to the mainboard. Also I tried to disable "allow windows to shut down this device to save power" (or whatever it says) in the hardware device manager for the usb hubs as somebody on this forum suggested. Didn't help.
Usb keyboard/mouse support is turned on in the bios and I have the newest drivers installed for everything.
My second problem is that when I start windows (XP) I would see the loading screen but it's very very dark and nothing is happening (like it's frozen). About 15 seconds later it suddenly is brighter and I see the "loading bar" moving. Also, whenever I try to restart or turn the pc off I get a similar freeze. After clicking on Start->Shutdown the mouse cursor turns into the sandclock and I can't do anything. Can't click on any icon nor the taskbar. Takes about 5 minutes for anythingto happen. That's when I get the "turn off, restart" screen. After clicking on something I'd see "please wait while windows is shutting down" for another 5 minutes to so. Any ideas as to what could be causing this behaviour?

@gamecock: How do I get the drivers for IDE back to the Microsoft version? Do I have to run the Nvidia Setup again and remove the driver or is there a different way? (btw I'm booting from the IDE drive)
Go to your device manager, then IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, and double click on the NVIDIA nForce3 250 Parallel ATA Controller (v2.6).  You can try to roll back driver and see if it puts you back to Microsoft.  If you've upgraded from 2.5 then you will only go back with an Nvidia driver again.  If so, then choose to Update Driver instead,  at Welcome etc choose No, not this time, Next, Install from a list or specific location (Advanced), Next, and then click Don't Search, I will choose the driver to install and Next.  At the Select device driver, you should have checked Show compatible hardware and several drivers should show in the Model window, at least the Nvidia and the Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller.  The standard is the Microsoft driver.  Choose the standard driver and Next.  You will have to reboot  and hopefully things will be better.  To put it back to Nvidia you only have to repeat process about but select Nvidia or run their install again.  Later....

There is some timing requirements that may not be fulfilled during the motherboard start .
Fans will always start turning , but the motherboard and cpu wont start up if the timing sequences and housekeeping control of ps_on , pwr_ok is on track
    withing the defined times .
So yes a "bad" psu can cause this . And it's the motherboard thats turn off baecause it hasn't got
a high pwr_ok that holds up.
I see,, so i guess i'm gonna replace the power supply...
    which one do u recommend?

  • Strange K8N Neo Platinum Problem

I just got my new system:
    MSI K8N Neo Plat
    A64 3000+
    512 MB Kingston HyperX (PC3500)
Installed windows and thought everything was fine until I got random BSOD (PFN_LIST_CORRUPT).  I narrowed the problem down to the memory so I used Memtest86 3.1 and found that the ram was faulty at Test#5 at all ram frequencies from 200MHz and up.  Worked fine when I used the dividers as long as it is below the 200MHz mark.  So I went back to the retailer to have them test the ram but it was fine on their system.  Ended up getting 1 stick of Corsair XMS PC3200 thinking it was incompatibility.  But again got the same problem.
Anyone have any clue as to what's going on?  Could it be the CPU or the motherboard that's causing the problems?
    Thanks

    Thanks for your reply.
Ok, I've tried all sockets and they all do the same thing.
I've slowed down the memory timings to the worst possible and same thing.
I've bumped the voltage up to 2.7 and still no luck.
I've already RMA the HyperX and the replacement stick didn't work either and of course the Corsair that I currently have now does the same thing.
    No Kingmax where I am.
I'm currently running at 235FSB with the 5/6 divider giving 195MHz.  Sucks that I can't run 1:1 at all, not even default.

  • 9700 pro and K8N Neo 754 Problem

I have some stability issue running 9700 pro on K8N neo 754,
First I was having a signal loss problem during playing and freezing , and I have to reboot manully from the reset buttom, FIXED this problem by running the card at agp 4x instead of 8x
second problem, also signal loss but this time in dos, some time I restart my computer, nothing appear on the desktop and aswell monitor is giving me no signal, just push the reset buttom and it works, and also when I enter bios to change some setting , save and exit , and nothing on the screen (signal loss), then push reset buttom, THAT happens random, some times it restarts without problem, I think the problem is the GPU stop responding.....
I think changing some bios settings may help
I tried disabled agp fast write and agp sidedband , didn't fix, maybe there is something hidden can solve the problem
    3000+
    512 ddr 400 kingston
    hec 450 w I don't think a power issue

This board does have settings that can be accessed by pressing shift F2 then pressing alt F3.  I've never accessed them but I hear that there is a setting called nv/ati speedup or something like that.  Some have solved video issues by enabling/disabling this feature.

  • K8N Neo Memory problems

I'm having problems with my K8n neo and my Corsair 3200 DDR. The system will boot and run stabaliy with just one stick of 512mb. It doesn't matter which stick I use or which memory slot I use all are stable. However if I try to boot with 2 sticks for a total of 1gb ram, the system will not boot. I just get a long beep from the speaker. I have tried all possible arangements of two sticks in three slotts, but nothing works. I flashed the bios from 1.1 to 1.3 but that didn't help. I tried increaseing mem voltage but that didn't help either
    System:
    K8N Neo 7030 ver 1
    AMD 64 3000+
    mem 1) Corsair CMX512-3200PT ver 1.1; 2) Corsair CMX512-3200PT ver 3
    P/S Zalman 400W
    OS - XP home SP1
The system is not OC at all

According to Corsair, it is not reccommended to mix revisions of the same type memory.  It can, and usually does cause instability.  If I were you I would either RMA the sticks to Corsair, in hopes of getting two of the same revision, or at the least send RamGuy a message at this forum:  Official Corsair memory support forum
I hope you sort things out, and good luck.

As this pertains to A64's make sure that you have a power supply that is either approved for use by MSI/AMD or that you have plenty of amps on the 12 volt rail. Typically we have noted many issues based on styability with PSU's being rated at less than 24A on the 12v rail.

Ive looked at the antec site Model: True330 if this is your model 12v/22A will probably do.
However I think Antec have recently updated the true power range with a stronger 12v in this case 22a
Look back at label and check your12v ampage just to be safe
Memtest isnt dos, just create disk & put in as u reboot. you cant Dir floppy
Try clearing Bios again following this method

Try disconnecting the AC from PSU .
Remove the battery for the cmos rom .
And place the jbat jumper in discharge (check manual for instructions) .
    Leave it 5-10min

    Syar2003
Later , first set the jumper back in "keep cmos" position .
    Mount the battery .
Connect AC to the PSU .
And try starting the computer .
When/if bios posts with cmos checksum error .. press F1 or "del" key
Dont use F1 but hit "del" key
and load optimized BIOS defaults + save + exit .

  • K8N Neo Voltage Problem

Hi guys maybe you can help out the latest noob to these forums.  I've been reading them for awhile but finally had to register because my SECOND K8N looks like it's going for an RMA.
Yesterday the fan header near the power switch stopped sending power to my video card fan.  I unhooked the fan and plugged it into one of the PS leads then it ran fine.  Then when doing some more benchmarking I noticed in speedfan that my voltages were really messed up, so I cleared CMOS, and checked the voltages in the bios and here they are (without an OC):
    VCore     1.48
    +12         0.00
    +3.3        3.24
    +5           5.31
    Battery     3.12
    +5VSB      4.91
I can't believe it's showing zero on the 12v line but everything is running fine right now.  What do you guys think could be causing this???   Thanks for your help.

My PSU is a Fortron/Sparkle FSP-530, not well known in Europe but it's one of the best out there.  I use a USB mouse but have to use the PS2 port for my keyboard because I use a KVM switch for my PCs.  I hadn't heard about the PS2 problem before but I've had no problems with that at least.
At least I can RMA with a company locally, so it's been no problem, but at some point I'm just going to end up stomping on this board.  I have never seen a motherboard with so many varying issues, almost so many you can't even troubleshoot a problem accurately.
Three boards and not ONE will do over 240 HTT....yes I've tried just about every combination of settings, different ram, different PSUs, etc.  Every time I set the HTT to 3x and/or the memory divider to 166 the board just gets completely unstable.  10x230 is the best this board will do and I know this CPU will do at least 2.4
Bios versions 1.1, 1.2, 1.40, 1.42, 1.51, nothing helps and anyway I don't trust the temp readings with any of them so i use a probe.  I have opened my case and set the CMOS jumper so many times with this board I can do it blindfolded in the dark.
    This board just sucks

I will spare you the long story about how I came to this but I have tested it now on 3 differant K8N Neo4s so feel pretty confident in it being accurate.  Problem occurs when you have the default BIOS settings enabling the Si s-raid (seems by default the NVIDIA s-raid is disabled).  With my Promise conrtoller in the x4 slot the system would hang on post with an indicator that it hung at the video bios load.  Only possible workaround is to remove the controller and enter BIOS and then shut down and reinstall the controller and reboot.
I cannot tell you how much trouble I went through identifying this over the last two days but hopefully MSI can test thier BIOS and get it fixed.  I actually have a pal in QA at Promise and told him about it, he said they would try to recreate the problem Monday and check to see if anything on the controller is at fault (allthough it would seem it is a board BIOS to me).  My suggestion to MSI, if they where lilstening, would be to change the default setting for the NVIDIA and Si RAID to disabled as that would eliminate the problem as it relates to making a board seem dead on defaul startup or after a bios flash or cmos reset.

P.S.  Problem exists in at least three differant BIOS: 1.9, 1.A, and 1.B.

    AgtSmith,
I have almost the same problem as you on your K8N Neo4 Platinum board with a Promise RAD Controller.  Good new for beasuse it says its not the third party RAID Controller causing the problem.
My problem is with a High Point RocketRAID 2320 PCI Express controller.  When I plugged the High Port Controller system refused
to boot.   Recovery procedure was about the same as your, unplug High Point Controller boot to BIOS and had a little first try I disabled the Silicon Image Controller.  System booted normally so I plugged the High Point in leaving the Silicon Image RAID Controller disabled in BIOS and system booted fine.  I had eight Seagate’s SATA II type drives plugged in to the High Point Controller and Plextor SATA DVD/CD plugged in slot one on the nVidia RAID Controller.  Installation of Window XP 64 on four of SATA II drive configure RAID 0 went with no problem, the Plextor SATA nVidia RAID Controller and the other two Seagate’s are running RAID 1 with no problem working fine during Windows install.
Only have on problem and that’s if the BIOS does not see the Windows install CD in the CD drive it hangs during BIOD Drive Checks.
I have also tested the High Point RAID Controller on an ASUD A8N-E and the out come was the same.
So, it appears to me nVidia Chipset problem with third party RAID Controllers on the PCI Express X4 slot.
I currently running the High Port RAID controller other I have to keep the Windows installation in a CD drive does not make diferents which CD Drive just as long as it load in one of the two CD’s on the system.
Other than me being sure the problem is nVidia, there is no must I can add to what going and you not alone with the problem and like you I found that BIOS version has no effect on the problem.

  • K8N NEO PLAT PROBLEM...HELP!!!

Hi all,New here,Maybe ye can help me sort my problem which is driving me Nuts!!Updated the bios to 1.5 and went to install xp on new drive which is a 400 gig seagate ncq unit which i know is working because i am using it at the moment for storage, but installation keeps failing at before it starts .ie after the partition and file system options. It asks me for driver for nvraid scsi which i dont have on my original motherboard floppy.so basically i do the F6 Option,go "S" For specify and do one or both options makes no difference still fails, pick my install partition and ntfs and then it says pressL to override previous window files and bang!!
Anyone know if problem is my driver wont do the new nvraid 4.6 on the bios or is it the ncq harddrive? Also if i do the xp boot dics i cant get into  a:\c: to reflash  bios to its former 1.4
    Kind regards kieran

    Hi kieran,
It might be worth downloading the latest Nvidia Unified drivers Windows XP - Unified Driver Version: 5.10 Release Date: September 17, 2004 & make a new floppy with the updated drivers. to do this Right click the D/L driver File  & select unpack/unzip. Navigate to the \Nvidia\nForce_5.10_WinXP2K_WHQL_englis\IDE\WinXP folder copy everything except the raidtool Folder onto floppy.
Follow the steps 4-23 in this Single SATA or Multiple Drive Array Setup FAQ
    Hopefully when XP is installled
    Update Xp as required
    Install Mobo Drivers.
You can go into bios & turn of raid removing your drive from the array.
This is the old school way (had to brush the cobwebs away on the link   ) but might work with your drive.
Luck    Shout up if you have any issues.

The above rig bought 3 weeks ago,
and its been giving me unstability problems. After installing winxp SP1, when I start installing drivers, these problems would come.
    1. PC would freeze up now and then.
    2. USB keyboard and mouse sometimes wouldn't work after bootup although PC is still running
    3. Blue screen! now and then.
    4. Sometimes different software installation would give error but re-running the installation would be fine.
The above mentioned problems could is still persisting after 2 weeks. I've reformat and reinstalled winxp 4-5 times and the above would still occurs sometimes, even in the middle of installing drivers. It comes randomly and not during a specific software/driver installation.
I've run memtest and RTHBRIBL overnight with no errors and I'm suspecting motherboard. Strange thing is that the MSI live update program help me flash bios on my motherboard and would still prompt me I need to flash my bios everytime.
I've basically almost isolate everything except motherboard. I hope someone can help me determine if it is my motherboard problems. I've going crazy already.

Please post the voltage rail ratings.
    Have you tried Prime95?
    http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm
It is a stress test that runs under windows and also can be used to test your memory.

If that is your PSU it is fine.
What nforce drivers are you using?
yes thats the vortex i have
cool and quiet disable thru bios
nforce drivers. seems to have more problems with the newer downloaded from MSI website. but can't really confirm
I've download prime 95 but I did not run it because by running RTHBTIBL will cause my cpu temp to go to 47 deg c. But I'll try it tonight.

Does anyone know if there is a loyalty or retention discount available? I plan on switching to the T-Mobile prepaid plan of 100 min voice and 5GB data for $30 per month.  It fits my usage and T-Mobile's reception is surprisingly better at my house.
