K8N Neo and SATA overclocking issues?

I'm thinking of getting some SATA Adapters for my PATA drives to help improve airflow in my K8N Neo Platinum.
I do have a few questions though.
I've been reading some threads about various issues regarding SATA like corruption of data when overclocking FSB.
I'm currently running 245 FSB 1:1 with the 1.42b2 BIOS.
First of all, will the SATA adpaters slow down my drives?
Will I experience any corruption or any other issues with using SATA (and adapters) with my drives?
Thx for sharing.

Don't bother doing what you are thinking...
as for SATA, it has the ability to be faster than IDE, but because of the drivers it doesn't have a speed advantage so much right now.  The only SATA drives I would get would be raptors, which I have one...otherwise I would go IDE

  • Article says K8N Neo has SATA frequency locking problem

This article says that the K8N Neo has SATA frequency locking problems when overclocking:
    http://www.nforcershq.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1801
First of all, is this true?
And if it is true, do we have a BIOS that fixed this problem.
My drives are PATA right now so I currently don't have any problems but I plan to get SATA drives/adapters soon.
I'm running 240 HTT (1:1) so not having the SATA frequency locked could be an issue.

Well, I´m running HTT 230 now, and I´m always using my Raptor as OS disk. Haven´t had any problems yet (with my disk). It´s connected to s-ata_1. Haven´t tried the other ones.
But sometimes when I boot (200 or 230HTT, doesn´t matter) I get artifacts on the boot screen and in Windows, so I have to restart.
Could it be a partially working AGP-lock? It seems as at works most of the time, but sometimes not... Strange... AGP is set to 66-67MHz

  • S3 mode doesn't work fine on K8N Neo-fsr since overclocking, please help!

    I have a K8N Neo-FSR (MS-7030) BIOS version 1.6 (I tried 1.4, 1.5), running AMD64 2800+ SK 754, 2x 256MB DDR400 Kingston valueram pluging in slot 1&2. It runs well except S3 mode    .
Since I overclock HTT (everythings else have their own default values), S3 mode seems to work so crazy . After wake up from this usefull stop-grant standby mode, HTT is given back to its original speed, 200MHz, without notice (?!)  .
You know that I don;t like this much, do you?
Who responsible for this function? Mainboard or CPU? If it's mainboard, which department will be sentenced, BIOS or chipsets/ICs?
Could anybody give me a solution to achive higher speed by overclocking without giving up using S3?
    Thanks so much!

It's a bad new! I had bad feeling about DFI with the same problem, S3 mode resuming bring FSB back to df and even sometimes led the system to the ruin. But upgrading bios solved this issue. My old Abit did S3 mode fine. Now I have a new MSI and once again I must use teknophyle's way or slow hibernation instead.
On the same occasion, I wana ask about some shortcoming in 1.6 bios: power on by keyboard/mouse and power led options. I only found S3 wake up by keyboard/mouse but not keyboard/mouse power-on options! There is power led option in version 1.56 but it disapeared in 1.6. Now my mobo has no signal to differentiate between sleep and power-off. would you give back the useful power led option and add power on by combination keys in the near future bios version, syar? Look forward to hearing some good new from you :D.

  • K8N Neo FSR Bios overclocking functions help needed

Hi all, I am a small pc builder for the family and i have found some problems with the bios of my uncles K8N neo FSR which I recommended for him. Basically it wouldn't seem to overclock with the 'Dynamic Overclocking' function on bios v1.7 but did manually by adjusting FSB incrementally (ie from 200 to 205 Mhz). When I questioned this before someone had mentioned that it could be ok to run like this. However I have since updated the bios to v1.9 and even v2.1 as they became available but now neither seem to overclock manually nor using 'Dynamic overclocking'
Firstly though, can someone clear up my first conception; To test if the Dynamic Overclocking function is working can I set it to a higher setting (ie.'Commander'), save and exit bios (restarting) ---> go straight back into bios ----> go straight back into Cell Menu and check 'Current frequency of cpu' has changed?
I only ask this as if this is the case then my Dynamic Overclocking function hasn't worked with three bios' and I wont bother with anything until I RMA the board lol, as I have never been able to change the frequency of my cpu at boot/bios stage with the dynamic overclocking function.
    Can anyone help me?

Hi Stu, yesterday I think i found out what u mean lol. I studied a 'Sticky' ? about overclocking A64s and found some interesting stuff. Apparently overclocking the HTT is dangerous, and A64s are always at least half locked. Now with this in mind Ive been wondering if there are interlocks built into my mainboard stopping me from using the 'CPU Overclock' function to overclock my pc manually from the set 200Mhz while my HTT is still set at 4x. -I say this as the HTT on my system is 800Mhz for a socket754 Sempron 3000Bx, thus overclocking this would increase my HTT above the 800Mhz threashold (I think) lol. All sounds complex but I think Ive figured it out as Im following instructions from the sticky to lower my HTT multiplier before increasing my cpu overclock. Its hard as my mainboard has Nforce3 chipset which has different ways of overclocking to every other board lol. So far I have managed to increase the overclock, but only when the HTT multiplier is lowered to 3x. I have also lowered my cpu multiplier though, and thus am trying to figure out where my 1810Mhz clock speed has changed to 1630 lol. Will try again now. I want to raise the clock speed above 1810, keeping the HTT lower than 800 and leaving the memory alone at 400DDR lol. Im hoping the memory is seperate as it seems to be on this chipset.

  • K8N Neo-FSR - SATA?

hello, in case I missed the information I apologize  . I got the K8N Neo-FSR and I want to ask if there is four Sata support on the board. I have noticed that on the board and also on your homepage-pictures there is only support for two Sata (Sata 3, Sata 4), but in the manual there is support for up to four Sata.
Is it four or two Sata support on the board?
    Thank´s

Can I run single sata drive on them without pata drive
    - Yep just plug it into either socket.
    Quote
use the rest of sata drive (140gb) normally?
    - No. if using raid it's preferable to use drives of same model (so that they share operating spec) & size so that no wasted space.

  • ATAPI Devices on K8N Neo Pt. SATA Ports?

    Hello,
I'm having difficulty getting any ATAPI optical drive I own to work through a PATA > SATA adapter on my K8N Neo Platinum (MS-7030) SATA ports.
I am using a Silicon Image SATALINK 3611CT80 SATA > PATA adapter to use a Lite-On LDW-811S DVD+/-RW drive, or a Lite-On 166S DVD-ROM drive. Neither one seems to work when plugged into SATA Port 1, 2, 3, or 4.
There is an indicator light on the adapter, and it flashes once when the PC is turned on (letting me know it has power) then the light shuts off and remains off (letting me no it has no link with the SATA controller). Windows recognizes either drive when it's hooked up to the adapter, however, I cannot access either drive when its hooked up to the adapter (it locks up the PC instantly)
I had no such problems using this same adapter on an Abit NF7-S 2.0 motherboard earlier, so I know the adapter is not faulty/damaged.
What I'd like to know is: does the K8N Neo Platinum support ATAPI devices (natively or through an adapter) on the SATA ports?
    My system specifications:
    AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (ADA3000AEP4AX / CBAPC 0404VPMW / 9814255B40259)
MSI K8N Neo Platinum (1.4 Official BIOS)
OCZ Technology 2 x 256MB Enhanced Latency Platinum Edition PC3200 Rev. 1 DDR Memory
Matrox Mystique 220 4MB VGA Videocard (temporary card during troubleshooting)
Maxtor 160GB UDMA/133 Hard Drive (Primary Master, IDE 1, only drive on cable)
    Lite-On LDW-811S DVD+/-RW Drive (Secondary Master, IDE 2)
Iomega Zip 100 Insider ATAPI Drive (Secondary Slave, IDE 2)
Lite-On XJ-HD166S DVD-ROM Drive (Trying to use on ANY SATA port, Master, only drive on cable)
    SinoTech CWT-550ADP Power Supply
    nVidia UDP 4.27
    Windows XP with SP2
    Thanks for your help

    Hey,
Thank you VERY much for your help. I really appreciate your help. I just heard back from MSI and they are relaying the same message you gave me (nVidia's SATA controller does NOT support ATAPI devices at this time)
I also found out that Abit's popular Serillel 2 SATA > PATA converter uses the same Silicon Image bridge chip as is found on my converter, and it states here that when hooked up to ATAPI devices these Sil3611 chips are "Compatible with SATA controller of Silicon Image on motherboard only!"
So I guess I'm outta luck on using this guy at all until nVidia changes something in their SATA implementation.
Glad to learn something, sorry to see my DVD-ROM go :( Its served me VERY well
    Peace

  • K8n Neo and MBM, show insane temperatures.

    Hello,
I have a MSI k8n Neo Platinium with a AMD Athlon 64 3000+, now it's run at 2350 Mhz with the inbox cooler.
The MSI Core center, shows 54ºC at MSI Core center, and a similar temperature in BIOS. (  Burning with Prime95 10 hours )
But if I execute the MBM program, shows 108ºC in "CPU"
The config of MBM (version of MBM is 5.3.7.0):
    Case: WinBond 1
    CPU: WinBond 2
    Sensor3: Winbond 3 ( Shows temps betwen 20-26 )
¿ Who is the problem ?
The CPU run's perfecty stable and the heatsink don't burn if touch it, at the MSI Core center an Bios  the temperature it's the same. When I execute MBM at moment MSI Core Center shows the same temperature of MBM, 108ºC.

It's probably a version of the bios, that's reporting the temps wrong. Update it, to the official one 1.3? Or the various beta bios's that are floating around. I'm currently using bios version 1.47(beta). At idle state, i'm at around 36c using AMD's stock heatsink.

  • Anyone have a K8N neo and using an ATI Radeon 9600xt?

I have a system with the K8N Neo board and have an ATI Radeon 9600xt video card.
I have some problems and wonder if it's the RAM.
If you have a similar setup using the 2 mentioned products, and your system is stable, please let me know what type of ram you have installed.
I'm really stuck. All drivers installed are the latest, including the beta driver for the ATI Radeon 9600xt.

  • K8N Neo Platnium 7030-- Power Issues and Keyboard Issues

    Hey,
This is my second computer that I've built and Im a little anxious to get it up and running. I finished a few hours ago and cant stop thinking about it. This may be a very small problem but I cant figure it out.
Actually there are 2 small problems.
    1) When turn the power on and then off I have to flip the switch on the PS before i can turn it on again.
    2) It starts up perfectly but stops on the platnuim logo without recognizing my keyboard. I press tab and del and nothing happens.
I have cleared the cmos, tried different keyboards, unplugged most of the commponets and put them back, taken out the memory. Oh and my Ata 133 hard drive is making a noise like its working hard or somthing. Another thing is I currently dont have an i/o shield (Still waiting for msi to send one).

Beyond stealing all you friends keyboards for a couple hours and testing them all, sounds like a short. Especially if you cant get a PS2 or USB keyboard working outside of the case, thats just not good at all.
I'd clear the CMOS and take out the battery for a couple hours and unplug the Power Supply to make sure nothing was getting voltage from anywhere.
Then I'd toss the battery back in, and flash a new bios version (beta 1.41 or 1.51) using an automatic batch file from a boot floppy, reboot and then try again with a PS2 keyboard.  If that didn't work I'd RMA the thing. Good luck
Oh, I've built a bunch of A64 boxes with that case and power supply lately, no way that is your issue unless the PS is actually broken. In fact, I just built one as my mothers Christmas present today, they work just fine with the MSI Neo 2, no way I'd give my mother something that I didn't trust, I would never hear the end of it

  • K8n neo premium, sata

    hello,
i have the k8n and a western digital sata hdd.
i used the FAQ and installed windows2k. worked but after the first reboot the comp is shutting down immediately and now i receive a blue screen (kmode_exception_not_handled; ntoskrnl.exe)  even before it enters win.
i seriously dont know what i can do :(
any ideas? i am really frustrated :(

    Hi bosie,
    Stop 0x0000001E or KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
The Stop 0x1E message indicates that the Windows XP kernel detected an illegal or unknown processor instruction. The problems that cause Stop 0x1E messages share similarities with those that generate Stop 0xA errors in that they can be due to invalid memory and access violations. This default Windows XP error handler typically intercepts these problems if error-handling routines are not present in the code itself.
    Possible Resolutions:
        * Stop 0x1E messages typically occur after installing faulty drivers or system services, or they can indicate hardware problems, such as memory and IRQ conflicts. If a Stop message lists a driver by name, disable, remove, or roll it back to correct the problem. If disabling or removing applications and drivers resolves the issue, contact the hardware manufacturer about a possible update. Using updated software is especially important for multimedia applications, antivirus scanners, and CD mastering tools.
        * If the Stop message mentions the file Win32k.sys, the source of the error might be a third-party "remote control" program. If such software is installed, you might be able to disable it by starting the system in safe mode. If not, use Recovery Console to manually delete the system service file that is causing the problem.
        * Problems can result from system firmware incompatibilities. Many Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) issues can be resolved by updating to the latest firmware.
        * Other possible causes include insufficient disk space while installing applications or performing certain functions that require more memory. You can free up space by deleting unneeded files. Use Disk Cleanup to increase available disk space. From Recovery Console, remove temporary files (those with .tmp file extensions), Internet cache files, application backup files, and .tmp files generated by Chkdsk.exe or Autochk.exe. You can also choose to install additional applications to another hard disk with more free space or move data files, paging files, and so on.
        * The problem might be due to a memory leak caused by an application or service that is not releasing memory correctly. Poolmon (Poolmon.exe) helps you to isolate the components that are causing kernel memory leaks. For more information about troubleshooting memory leaks, see Microsoft Knowledgebase articles Q177415, "How to Use Poolmon to Troubleshoot Kernel Mode Memory Leaks," and Q298102, "Finding Pool Tags Used by Third Party Files Without Using the Debugger."

Hope this sheds some light on to you problem,

  • K8N Neo 2 Platinum - Any issues with with a ATI 1950pro 512MD AGP?

Hello, I have always bought NVIDIA based cards and I am thinking of moving to ATI. The 1950pro 512MB AGP card looks like it is going to be that last AGP card and I want to keep my rig a little longer before I go to PCI-e.
A few years ago I remember that I stayed away from ATI because the catalyst drivers were know to have some issues. Does anybody know of any issues that I might experience with my board and ATI? Of course, I will make sure that I wipe the NVIDA graphic drives from my system completely.
    Thanks!

No known issues (as far as I know). Just the fastest agp card around. Drivers quite good, not more or less problems than with nvidia drivers. There will be also no problem because of nvidia chipset board and ati vga, very common combination. Nothing that should hold you back from getting it.
Although I'd choose 256mb version because 512mb won't cause any noticeable performance improvement compared to 256mb. Better buy Powercolor 1950Pro with silent accelero X2 installed: http://www.powercolor.com/global/main_product_series.asp?int=agp&chp=x1950

  • P7N platinum sli and qx9650 overclock issues

    Hey all,
Just wondering if someone could help me with overclocking my qx9650 on my P7N platinum sli.
I have tried throwing all kinds of voltages at the cpu, fsb, and nb and I still can't run stable for over a few seconds. I thought it might be due to a fsb hole and have tried a range from 1550-1650. My goal is to get it at 400mhz(1600 in bios) and get a 5:4 ratio with my ram at 1000.  I tried updating to the p06 performance bios from ami 1.3 and still can't get it stable. I don't want to end up frying my board. I got it to run stable at 350 for an hour in prime 95 but would really like to achieve 1600.  at 350x8.5 for 1500 my temps did not get above 54c under full load
I am not looking for a huge oc, just get to 9x400 for a 3.6 ghz clock speed for 24/7 use. I ran prime 95 for 5 hours with everything at stock so I know it is not a bad cpu, ram, mobo. I also ran memtest86+ at stock and every test passed. I have d.o.t disabled, eist disabled, and spread spectrum disabled.
Memory timings right now are 5-5-5-18-2T at 2.1v and memtest+ passed with those settings at speed 800mhz.
    any suggestions would be great

just wanted to let everyone know that i got it stable at 3.75ghz for 26 hours in prime 95. Don't know why but it still won't boot from 1550-1650 (must be a FSB hole or something) so i just put it at 1500(375) with a 10 multiplier and ram at 1000 for a 3:4 fsb:ram ratio.

  • K8N Neo Platinum 1.9 issue

Just upgraded to 1.9 so I could use its MAC address input feature, however now the Advanced BIOS Features page has only a handful of entries on it, including no option to get rid of the splash screen (Full Screen LOGO Display). Is this as it should be, or is something wrong?
    Thank you.

I  used to use the 1.9 bios, as I remembered, the Full Logo screen could be disabled or enabled in the bios. If it couldn't, Then I suggest you clear cmos and load defaults to have another try. Or just directly upgrade the bios to the latest version.

  • K8N Neo Platinum processor overheating?

I've recently received a K8N Neo Platinum MB with a Athlon 64 3000+ processor, and the combination is constantly producing extremely high processor temperatures!? For example, around 62C in idle while the PC cover is open, and over 70C with the cover closed   Seems as if there's no software processor cooling at all, even at processor ocupancy close to 0%.
I've turned on the Cool and Quiet feature, and the Core Center is installed and active. Contrary to the demonstration I've seen at a presentation only several days ago, the processor NEVER drops to a lower frequency than the default, even when it hasn't got any workload. As instructed by the MB manual, I've checked the last character in the processor serial number, and it's an X (the manual says it has to be higher than O in order for the processor to support the Cool and Quiet feature). I've dismounted and mounted the cooler several times in order to check if it has good contact with the processor, but there seems to be no problem with it - it's flat and tight, with lots of thermal grease. I've even tried two different instances of Windows XP, SP1 and all the drivers installed, one of them was installed from scratch on K8N Neo, and the heating issue remains the same
Is there a cure? A new BIOS version (maybe beta?) or else? This seems to be unacceptable, since in the demonstration CPU temperature in idle was around 31-32C, and even at highest workloads did not exceed 45C (in a CLOSED case).

Subject: temperature report too high - data
    Dear MSI Support,
I recently received my K8N Neo Platinum NF3 250GB and AMD64 3400+ and am seeing high temperatures reported by core center and motherboard monitor bm5 - in the region of 45C idle (same as reported case temperature which seems very high also), and up to 70C and above under sustained 100% load. Cool and quiet is not enabled, neither is DOT. BIOS reports 45C idle temps - I cannot view direct bios temperature readings under load. Cooler is Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu running at full speed.
