K8n neo bios 1.4 temps and cool n quiet

Hi,
I recently flashed to bios 1.4 and it has been fine thus far.  However I have two issues that may be related to this new bios.
Windows XP utilties (mbm, sandra, speedfan, even corecell) all report my temps to be in the mid 30 degrees C, however the bios reports them as 45 degrees, which should I trust?
Also I think I've gotten half of cool n quiet working, vcore is down when cpu is not doing intensive work and so is the multiplier, making it run approx 1 GHz give or take.  However, I believe that my AMD stock fan always spins around the same speed (approx 3200 rpm), regardless whether the cpu is doing intensive work or idles, is something wrong?  I have the cool, wheres the quiet where my fan is supposed to slow down?
Any help is appreciated!

well the temperature in bios is very likely to to be above of that in windows, because cool n quiet doesnt work in bios and processor runs at normal frequencies there. The fan speed problem can be either of two things i know, first is that you haven't enabled smart cpu fan in bios and other is if you go to standby and then resume, it seems that cool n quiet works after it but mobo doesn't control the fan speed after standby. These are just some things i have noticed. The bios 1.4 is very good btw (atleast for normal use, i dont't overclock so no idea about that).

Having Cool'n Quiet disabled in BIOS setup, CPU core voltage adjustment
using 'Adjust CPU VID' below the Athlon 64 default 1,5V core voltage
    works like a charm. Fine!
But with Cool'n Quiet enabled in BIOS setup (and WinXP), under load the
CPU core voltage raises to 1,5V in any case, independently of what I did
define in BIOS setup with 'Adjust CPU VID' (e.g. 1,4V). Software tools setting
Vcore like Core Center are not running.
So I can choose to either run a silent system in idle mode with Cool'n Quiet
enabled or under heavy CPU load with Cool'n Quiet disabled but Vcore
reduced :-( Am I missing something or does it rather look like a BIOS
    bug?

As undervolting is not considured standard operating proceedures then how can it be considured a bug.
nor is overclocking but MSI mobo manual reads 'This motherboard is designed to support overclocking.'
So this mobo is designed for supporting at least one non standard operating procedure
Seriously, if BIOS offers a feature I suppose it to work as expected.

  • K8N Neo BIOS FSB OC VERY limited

Well I have seen this on several message boards, the Viperlair review here:Viperlair review and observed it myself. The OC from the BIOS on my system will not boot 140> using any multiplier/MEM/HT/Vcore combination. My Basic system specs:
    Vapochill PE and Alpha PAL8150
    K8N Neo
    A64 3000
    Tried 2x512, 2x256, 1x512 and 1x256 PC4200
    Pelt Cooled 9800 Pro
Using clockgen I can get 10x245 at stock Vcore even on air cooling so I know the CPU should be able to do better with sub 0 cooling in a Vapo case. I can also lower the multiplier and get to 280>FSB using clockgen. It's going to be a real shame if there is no way around this BIOS limitation. A few other glitches I hope they fix:
    1) The temps are still reading way off. My P4C/4Ghz 1.65v idled at -2~0c and hit 15~17c load. The A64 3000 at idle reports 8c and goes no lower no matter what the Vapochill is cranked up to. Load temps are 15~17c. This has been reported on many of the Nforce 3 MOBO's. None of the MOBO manufacturers seems able/willing to issue a BIOS fix for this. For that matter none of them seem to be willing to admit there is a problem at all.
    2) Do not use the Forceware IDE SW. I am using the latest v4.24 and the basic XP Pro setup with 1 drive connected to the SATA was detected and worked fine. Immediately after installing the Forceware drivers the system would no longer boot with the SATA drive connected. I had to disconnect the SATA drive and roll back the drivers on all the PATA and SATA controllers. Everything worked normally after that.
    3) The NVIDIA Nforce PCI System Management will NOT share IRQ 11 with anything. This really bummed me out as the second channel on my Adaptec 39320-R Host RAID controller also wants to use IRQ 11. I had no option but to take out the 15K SCSI drive that I use for speedy virtual CD access in gaming and replace it with an IDE drive. I still have not gotten this issue worked out and had to disable the second channel. I hope a later BIOS fixes this issue. It has been some time since I have had a hard IRQ conflict like this, I thought XP wuz supposed to solve these sorts of issues. Oh well.
    4) Damn that southbridge gets hot, active cooling would have been nice. I already replaced the white thermal goo with AS, removed the MSI ID plate and installed a small fan to the HS. The temps still go 50c+ under load. I was going to add a larger HS but the ramsinks on my ATI 9800 Pro  inhibit installation. I may add a small water block later to get temps down.

So you say you can't boot above 240fsb setting using your bios buy you can use clockgen and get to 280? What version of clockgen are you using? I can't get above 230 no matter what I use. When I use clockgen in windows and go above 235 windows just locks up. Also getting alot of hard drive corruption. I've had to install windows 4 times now. Using a couple of raptors in a raid array. I wonder if it's a pci lock thing or the crappy nvidia ide and sata drivers. Did the fan on the heatsink help at all?

  • K8N Neo BIOS 1.5 released -- sorry FALSE ALARM

I haven't yet tried it, but BIOS 1.5 appears to be posted on LiveUpdate, along with a new version of the LiveUpdate software itself. This is for the K8N Neo; I don't know about the Neo2.
    Anyone tried it yet?

Well this is weird. It tells me 1.5 is released, I try to install it. It first says it needs to install a new version of LiveUpdate. Fine...reboot...then back to LiveUpdate and there's no new version of the BIOS showing up anymore. Or maybe I was just imagining things. Sorry for the false alarm.

  • K8N Neo BIOS Flash; No Vid Signal

Another problem with this board!...I an attempt to cure some of the 3D game instability issues, I flashed the BIOS with ver 1.2 then 1.31. Did not cure the 3D problems, but now there is no video signal until WinXP is loading! (monitor light just flashes) Once in Windows it runs okay, albeit with the same 3D problems!
Anyone had this? It makes it impossible to get to the BIOS or boot with a floppy etc... By pressing the power off/on many times, occasionally the initial boot screen will show.

  • K8N Neo Platnium 7030-- Power Issues and Keyboard Issues

    Hey,
This is my second computer that I've built and Im a little anxious to get it up and running. I finished a few hours ago and cant stop thinking about it. This may be a very small problem but I cant figure it out.
Actually there are 2 small problems.
    1) When turn the power on and then off I have to flip the switch on the PS before i can turn it on again.
    2) It starts up perfectly but stops on the platnuim logo without recognizing my keyboard. I press tab and del and nothing happens.
I have cleared the cmos, tried different keyboards, unplugged most of the commponets and put them back, taken out the memory. Oh and my Ata 133 hard drive is making a noise like its working hard or somthing. Another thing is I currently dont have an i/o shield (Still waiting for msi to send one).

Beyond stealing all you friends keyboards for a couple hours and testing them all, sounds like a short. Especially if you cant get a PS2 or USB keyboard working outside of the case, thats just not good at all.
I'd clear the CMOS and take out the battery for a couple hours and unplug the Power Supply to make sure nothing was getting voltage from anywhere.
Then I'd toss the battery back in, and flash a new bios version (beta 1.41 or 1.51) using an automatic batch file from a boot floppy, reboot and then try again with a PS2 keyboard.  If that didn't work I'd RMA the thing. Good luck
Oh, I've built a bunch of A64 boxes with that case and power supply lately, no way that is your issue unless the PS is actually broken. In fact, I just built one as my mothers Christmas present today, they work just fine with the MSI Neo 2, no way I'd give my mother something that I didn't trust, I would never hear the end of it

  • Optical mouse problems with K8N Neo - BIOS?

Hi guys, I recently bought a cheapo Trust USB Wireless optical mouse.
    I tried E-mailing the manufacturer, asking about the problem;
"The mouse works fine as long as its in continuous motion, but heres the
    problem:
Whenever Ive let go of it for a few seconds and then try to move it again,
it moves around the screen in an uncontrollable manner for a second or two before
    it returns to normal state.
This seems to have something to do with the "powersaving" capability of the
mouse or something. You know, most optical mouses power down after a few seconds of inactivity, and wakes up as soon as its moved. This one sort of has problems wake up properly.
Im using the standard XP drivers for HID-compilant mouse.
Can I do anything to prevent this? Its really annoying."
    So heres the reply:
it can be due to an incorrect set setting in your computer's BIOS. I
suggest you take the manual of the PC or Main board before looking into your
    BIOS.
You have to set the option like "Power Management" correctly.
Every BIOS on each PC brand is different so we can't exactly guide you in
    this.
So is there a way to fix this? Have tried looking through BIOS myself, but can't find anything that seems related to this....

  • Help!!! Linux and Cool N Quiet.

Is there a way to Enable this function under Linux. It is already enabled in the BIOS but doesn't work anyway. In windows I have to run Core Center to control the CPU Fan but how can I control the CPU fan in Linux? It is really annoying...and noisy, I can't work like this. The Fan RPM has peaked.

    Look here >>AMD's C&Q driver for Linux<<
    I hope it helps.
Ofcourse the simple route for the fan's is using Thermal-control (or smartfan) in the BIOS.

  • Strange Temp Jumps on MSI K8N Neo-FSR

    Hi!
    I got a MSI K8N Neo-FSR.
My temp in speedfan jumps from 36 to 42 just like that then back to 36.
It's pretty disturbing to see that.. And I wounder does someone else have the same problem? Then I don't know how accurate the new BIOS for this mb is. On the Abit I hade before the temp was 34 idle.. Today I allso bend the small metal pice that you screw in on the Zalman ALCU cpu cooler so it would fit and press harder, then the temp sank from 42 to 36 idle. And the CoreCenter shows a temp on 44 now and speedfan 36 but jumps to 40-42 just for a second.
Anyone know what the problam can be? It's kinda anyoing when you OC some because you don't know the right temp.

You should try and update your bios , speedfan and core center showed different temperatures for me too until i updated my bios. On the other hand i have a different problem, that is: when i start my pc(cold start) my idle temperature is 40 degrees but if i restart it drops to 30, does someone have any clue why?

  • K8N Neo half multipliers and performance

I noticed that i'm able to set half multipliers in my K8N Neo BIOS.
What I mean by "half" multiplers are multipliers like 9.5x, 10.5x, 8.5x, etc ..
I read somwhere that you should avoid using "half" multipliers since they are really bad for performance.
Can anyone verify this claim ?

u dont mention power supply details of this would help
U arent booting with to much but these boards need plenty of juice on the 12v rail
if u have all 3 ram sockets occupied it may be worth taking 2 out & booting with a single stick till u get the thing going.
is your old pc still in running order ??
id be inclined to put a stick in your old mc and download a utility called everest home edition from: Everest Home Edition
install & run this on old mc
Expand the Motherboard option & open the spd there will be a description & details of ur memory which you can note
Click below on chipset & it will show u memory timings again note these
These details will be of value to see whether
    1) it is compatable with new board
    2) what timings u may need to set in bios
see wot u can do with 1 stick & let us know with PSU Details & memory if u can
    good luck

  • K8N NEO 2 Platinum sometimes doesn't initialise the keyboard and mouse

I got a K8N NEO 2 Platinum for christmas, and everytime it reboots (fine when you turn it on fresh), it produces the shortest of bleeps, and doesn't initialise the keyboard and mouse. The only way to do anything then is to go for the power button and windows xp shuts down. It is still responding, just the bios hasn't initialised the keyboard and mouse.

    Hi.
What is the best bios for overclocking on msi k8n neo fsr/platinum. I use bios 1,47 now, but i think it is playing games with me.
I have no problem running my cpu at 10/255/2550, but my Ocz 3500 EB wont follow that long on 1:1. So i tried running this at 9/280/2520 and my memory running at 5/6. But my cpu wont get totally stabil here...

Is there a better bios for OC?
