K8N Neo-F + AMD 64 3000+ Venice -- Ram types?

Hello!
Quick question I hope isn't too tricky to answer. I have ordered an MSI K8N Neo-F motherboard, with a retail boxed AMD 64 3000+ cpu (Venice core, Rev. E) and ordered a pair of Corsair PC3200 512MB sticks of ram, its the VS1GBKIT400 kit. Unfortunately the ram did not get here and its friday so I'm going crazy! I have an older AMD XP 2000+ system with an MSI K3 Ultra-ARU setup with a pair of generic 512MB DDR333 ram sticks in it, they're pc2700.
I've read through the manual for the K8N and it sounds like this should run fine with my DDR333 sticks but I just wanted to post and see what others thought. Looks like I can run either of them or both of them so hopefully that will work, would hate to wait till monday/tuesday to have to play with the new system!
Thanks!

Cpu temp is around 40-50 celcius.
I have tried all the three mem slots with every combination including only one mem chip.
Another problem is that i never have got dual channel listed in cpu-z or memtest.
Yes the psu might be the case. I have tried a Dell crap psu a Chieftec 15a on 12v and a cheftec 18a on 12v. But i think it is very strange that i get completly the same result with all three different psu and two different rams.
And no i have never oc this system, except raising the volt on mem and cpu, but i only used the yellow number to be safe.

  • MSI K8T Neo2-FIR w/ AMD Athlon64 3000 (Venice)

I am looking at purchasing the MSI K8T Neo2-FIR with the AMD Athlon64 3000 (Venice). However, it appears that many have issues with this. I found a link to a MSI german forum that had a beta version of the newest bios but I have a few questions.
Would a german version work if i am living in canada (toronto)?
How can the bios be flashed if it doesnt recognize the cpu?
When will the new bios be released?

The Venice core will be supported by the K8T neo2 shortly, I'm convinced about that, since Asus (I'm sorry to mention them) are supporting it already, with the same bios.
Even ECS published Venice-ready BIOS updates...

  • New k8n neeo platinum / amd 64 3000+ build question - blue screen of death

Hey there, I was just playing some Soldier of Fortune 2 when all of a sudden I got the blue screen of death.  I was wondering what are some reasons for this?
I'm running at stock speeds and nothing overclocked.  At reboot my cpu temp was 43c and NB temp was 43c.
Not really sure what else I could add but was really surprised that I experienced a crash at stock speeds when I've never had similar problems on an Intel overclocked from 2.6 to 3.0.
Any suggestions would be great as I'd like to prevent any further problems from occurring.  Thanks.

I'm not sure if my power supply is too small.  It has 20 on the 12v.  Also all the vcore is set to default for the memory and cpu so maybe that's a problem?
    Thanks in advance.
20 amps is fine.  It's most likely your ram.  If changing slots helped then there you go

  • K8N NEO Plat AMD 64 restarts, please help !

    I have a new system.
    MSI K8N Neo Platinum
    AMD64 3200
Geil Value pc3200 512 also tried with crucial pc2700 ram
    Tried three different PSU's
I have a serious problem. It will only boot to windows with failsafe bios defaults (ie. running the 3200 RAM at 166) in this mode the pc restarts all the time 5 min 30 min. and at once if i try running a game.
If I run the RAM with optimized settings 200 mhz sometimes it boots, sometimes it just freezes at the win logo.
Tried to reinstall windows, all drivers. removed nvidedrivers.
when running memtest, as soon as test 5 start the machine reboots. No errors on the other tests.
I have tried two different RAMS and three different PSU's with the same results.
Adjusted timings on the ram to a minimum. raise voltage on ram and cpu.
All this and no success! just the same no difference.
I do not want to Oc this machine i really just want a 100% stable one.

  • Boot-up Problems with K8N Neo

I've just upgraded my computer with a K8N Neo motherboard, AMD 64 3000+ processor and a nice new Antec case.
I have a few problems so far.
    1.  95% of the time, when POST gets to "Verifying DMI Pool Data"...the NVIDIA Boot Agent will kick in, i assume because it can't boot from my hdd.  But i can't for the life of me figure out why, the hdd is from my old computer but it's a clean copy of Windows XP on there.  I have disabled SATA in bios.  The other 5% of the time my computer boots up fine.
    2.  POST is very slow, it can take up to 5 minutes just to detect the IDE drives.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, i'm not sure if ive included enough information, so please ask if you need more.
    Thanks!

Only BIOS 1.4 and above support Venice & San Diego. However BIOS 1.4 has shut-down issue with RAID. It is suggested that you let your reseller help you flash BIOS to the latest version 1.5. After flashing BIOS, Loading Optimized defaults is needed of course. Good Luck!
Support new features in that cpuid yes. But that is not the same as you are not able to boot/post your system
    with an earlier bios .
I booted up a venice on a K8N Neo2 with an aged 1.3 bios (with no venice SD support) just fine .
If the bios supports 90nm cpu it will post .
    New CPUID added means :
    Shown on post (display)
    And e.g new model spesific features (like e.g SSE3 ) enabled .
Use the CPUID instruction to properly identify the processor.
    • Determine the processor type, stepping, and available features by using functions 0000_0001h
and 8000_0001h of the CPUID instruction.
    • Boot-up display - The processor name should be displayed according to the processor name string
defined in CPUID Guide for the AMD Athlon™ 64 and AMD Opteron™ Processors, order#
    25481.

  • K8N Neo 4F problems

    Hi,
Recently I have just brought a K8N Neo 4F mobo and have been getting some weird problems with it. The following is my system system :
    1. K8N Neo 4F
    2. AMD 64 3000+ (Venice chipset)
    3. Cosair DRR400 2x512MB (CL2.5) RAM
    4. Sapphire Radeon X700 Hybrid 256MB PCIe
    5. Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
    6. Maxtor IDE HDD 40GB (ATA133) 5400 RPM 2MB
    7. Maxtor IDE HDD 20GB (ATA100) 5400 RPM 2MB
    8. Sony 16x DVD DL RW+RW- / 48x CDR
I have installed WinXP Pro sp2, Catalyst 5.9, DirectX 9.0c and drivers for Sound Blaster. I am using Norton AV 2005.
When I am working normally in Windows, the system is stable. When I start playing 3D games, a few minutes into the game and the system hangs. I got a black screen and pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL doesn't help. I have to press the reset button to reboot.
At the BIOS setup screen, I found the CPU Vcore voltage is 12.22V which is 0.22V above the standard. I am not doing any overclocking on the system.
Can someone tell me what is wrong?
    Thanks.

Does your fast write is enable/disable in the BIOS? If enable try to disable it! Used CPUZ to identify your RAM setting and try to change it from the BIOS (recommended setting) http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php. BTW put your pc spec's into your sig!!

Any ideas greatly appreciated as I don't want to rebuild my machine as it is exactly how I wanted it I feel I have checked everything but maybe someone can shed a little light.
Anyone want a spare mboard or two ?? I now have three !

Your Tagan's behavior was typical of a failing PSU... but the Turb-Cool model you mention doesn't exist at the PCP&C web site; in fact there are a total of five other 510 models, some of which have only an 8-pin CPU power connector, so it's impossible to figure which one you have.  Does your PSU have a 4- or 8-pin CPU power connector and, if the latter, how do you have it connected to the mbrd?  The only 8-pin CPU power connector I've seen could not be connected to a 4-pin socket, which your mbrd has... or does your mbrd have both 4- and 8-pin?
The only other thing I'd remark is that Vista will not run satisfactorily with your nForce3 mbrd and an ATI video card.

  • K8N Neo-FSR 4 Red LEDS

I put together an amd64 system:
    K8N Neo-FSR
    AMD Athlon 64 3000+
    1024mb corsair valueselect (2x512)
When I power on, I get 4 red leds on the dbracket, which is supposedly a damaged or incorrectly installed cpu.  I am 99% sure that both of the cpus that i tried were good, but I am 100% sure that one of them was.  I also tried reseating them a few times.  Is there anything else 4 red leds means?
Also, the computer turns on with the powers supply switch and the power/reset switches don't work at all even though they are plugged in to the correct places.  Anyone got any ideas?

I had the exact same problem. Thought it was the CPU, so returned it and got a new one, and the error continued. Here's how I got it to stop:
Take EVERYTHING off the mobo. All the PCI/AGP cards and the ram. You can leave your drives hooked up, but unplug the power from them.
Then, try to reboot it. When I did that, it finally got past the 4 LEDs and gave the memory error leds. So I put in the ram, and it gave me the next error. So on and so forth. I kept putting in whatever piece of hardware it was crying about, until it got all the way through, at which point I put in my extra stuff (sound card, tv card). Yes, it's a pain in the ass.
When I was putting them back in, the only thing I did different is I put my tv card in the slot above the orange PCI slot (the one on the bottom that is "enhanced"). I'm wondering if that wasn't the problem to begin with.

  • K8N Neo corrupts data - should I RMA?

    Mobo: K8N Neo Platinum
    AMD 3000+
    1 GB memory (Generic)
Primary IDE: 160GB maxtor and DVD (in that order)
Secondard IDE: 160GB maxtor (same model) and DVD (in that order)
SATA 1 to 4: 250 GB maxtor (same model on each)
So that's 6 hard disks and 2 DVDs in total.
    Greaphics: Asus v9400 magic
    NOT overclocked!
    BIOSes tried 1.1 and 1.3
After my 20th (or 30th) install of Win 2003, I've finally concluded, I think, that I have a faulty mobo, unless soemone has any good ideas. Basically, if I copy large quantities (say 2GB or more) of data to the device on SATA3 or SATA4, the data corrupts. No errors in the event log, but apps fail to work randomly, and a binary file comparison definiitely shows the corrupt file is not the same as the source. (usualoly by one bit only).
    OK. Here's what I've tried:
    1. Swapping hard disks around. Result: it's always the device on SATA3 and SATA4 that fails.
    2. Swapping SATA cables. Result: No difference.
    3. Doing large quantities of data moving on the other drives: Result: no problemo on IDEs and SATA1/2.
    4. I've followed the instructions in the FAQ (the rsheppick one that instructs to set up the disks as raid 0 stripes even if they're single disks and use the Nvidia drivers). result: Still corrupts on SATA3/4.
    5. I've also disabled the raid bios and used the Nvidia IDE s/w drivers. Same result.
    6. I've disabled the RAID bios and used the MS drivers: same result.
    7. In case anyone asks: no I'm not overclocking!
    8. Just for fun, I've also set up various RAID configuraytions in hardware and software and the bottom line is that any array that uses SATA3/4 gets data corruption.
    9. There's no other hardware in the machine other than what's mentioned.
    10. I've tried all combinations of BIOSes 1.1, 1.3 and NVidia IDE drivers 2.5 and 2.6. result: always a corruption on SATA3/4.
The annoying this is   that because there were no errors when the system was installed and got up and running, it's been a pain to locate the problem of the various app crashes. (The OS has always been on the IDE channels and hasn't been a problem.)
    Questions:
    1. Has anyone else found the same problem? WARNING: if it's a bad batch of mobos or a design fault then there could be lots of people with this problem that don't know it!
    2. Any other ideas? Just a faulty mobo?
    Cheers
    Mark

Several of us have reported data corruption with nForce 4 based motherboards.
I'd like to share my experiences with you. I hope nVidia's & MSI's experts read this forum and finally offer us the right solution.
    In short:
Some random data data corruption happens if a motherboard is stressed with DMA transfers (about 2 or 3 bytes altered out of  ~5 GBytes). The operating system does not log any error.
You copy a file of some GBytes, you compare them e.g. with the "comp" command in a DOS window, and the two files wont be the same. You repeat comparing them: you may see different errors at different file offsets each time. It seems to be a random error.
You can reproduce this error under Linux, too, e.g. SuSE 9.3.
I think data corruption happens when the DMA writes the memory.
    - If disk writes (DMA memory reads) were broken, then once the file copy is carried out (with some errors), you would always see the same errors when comparing the two files repeatedly.
    - I moved a disk of mines to an "old" machine, I created some files (big RAR-s) and double-checked them on that machine. Moving back, the files seem to be corrupted.
It is funny to see that it is always the byte at the offset hexadecimal 0x1d8 (out of the 512 = 0x200 byte long disk sectors) that is altered by 0x10, e.g. 0x2f becomes 0x3f or vice versa.
    My HW-SW configuration:
    - MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum MS-7125 ver: 1
    - AMD Athlon 64 3700++
    - 2 * 512 MByte Kingston DDR 400 MHz PC3200
    - Leadtek PX6600 GT
    - 2 * Maxtor DiamonMax Plus 10, 250 GBytes
    - BIOS updated to 1.90, factory optimized defaults
    - Windows XP pro + SP2 + nForce_amd_6.66.WinXP2K_international.e xe
    - SuSE Linux 9.3
The data corruption error can be reproduced with both RAID-ed and singe disks.
Just to make sure no other HW component can be blamed for this data corruption, I changed:
    - the CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000++ (the n-1 technology)
    - the memory: no-name DIMs of 333 MHz
    - the video card: an old Trio64 PCI
    - the power supply: 2 of them from 2 other manufacturers
Needless to say that the data corruption error persists despite the speed reduction of the machine.
    For the log:
    - The usual CPU temperature is about 35 Centigrade, the voltages are no more that 2 % off from their nominal values.
    - I tested the memory by the stand alone Memtest-86 v3.2 (e.g. on the SuSE 9.3 install CD) for hours, no memory error could be detected.
I can reproduce this error by connecting my disks on both the S-ATA controller built in to the nForce 4 chip set and on the Silicon Image's S-ATA-RAID controller (I guess this latter is a PCI device happened to be soldered on the motherboard). This is why I think it is the nForce 4 DMA logic (that is common for both of these S-ATA controllers) that is responsible for this error.
I connected some P-ATA disks and some SCSI ones (via an NCR-875 card). None of them suffered from the data corruption. Explanation: these disks stress less the nForce 4 DMA logic due to their lower data rate.
Some of the posters suggested the the NCQ/TCQ would be the origin of the data corruption. I set off the
    Device Manager
       Nvidia nForce4 ADMA Controller Properties
          Primary and Secondary Channel
             Enable Command Queuing
I compared some files of ~10 GBytes on a single disk: they did match.
Having become enthusiastic over the success, I compared files located on two distinct disks. The deception was back: they were different. The number of the differences were somewhat lower.
I organized my disks as RAID-0. In addition to switching off the command queuing as before, I set off the
    Device Manager
       Nvidia Stripe Properties
          SCSI Properties
             Disable Tagged Queuing
    It did not help.
I think by switching off the NCQ/TCQ, the error is not eliminated, only the transfer rate is diminished. If the nForce 4 DMA logic is sufficiently stressed, data corruption will happen.

The other related posts I read, people were using raid or multiple OS.  I'm not.

I had the same issues as you sometimes Windows would install and sometimes it wouldn't the problem was related to ram. I had my ram in slots one and two like you did and I moved the ram to slots 1 and 3 and now the machine is rock solid stable.
I think most of the problems people are having are actually more ram related than anything else.
So try moving the stick of ram you have in slot 2 to slot 3 and see if this solves your problem. This solution is on forums somewhere I am just not sure where.
    Take care,

  • MSI K8N Neo Platinum Query

ALoha folks, having osme problems with my board ( think i may have damaged it but wanna be sure).
I got a VAPo XE and when i went to install it i realised that the back plate was in the way. Went ok, came on here, found the sugestions on removing it (hair dryer) and removed it succesfully by pulling it up with a pair of pliers.
Installed Vapo etc, chucked in ram, cpu and gfx card.
When i turn it on i get a beeep and inothin happens. No image to the monitor at all. I attached the d-bracket to check the led code and it seems to stop at inializing keyboard.
What i've tried so far is a second gfx card and moving the memory to different dimms (aint tried me other stick of memory yet.).
What exactly is "initlializing keyboard", is it what i think it is (ie keyboard :p )
What else can i do before i just go and buy a new mobo?
    Thanks for any help.
    Full system specs:
    Vapo Xe
    Antec 480w Trupower (+5v (38A), +12v (22A), +3.3v (30A)
    MSI K8N Neo Plat
    AMd 64 3200 512k (newcastle)
    1gig of corsair XLS3200XLPT CAS2 (only used 1 512mb stick thus far)
Geforce 256 (also tried a 9700pro and no change)

    Right i got this fixed.
Ended up taking it all apart and resitting everything. Changed the ram as well and tis now working fine. Dunno if its the other ram that was dodgy or not, will check that outl later. For now immjust happy to be able to POST :D

  • K8N Neo Platinum, USB devices keep losing power

    I have a K8N Neo Platinum with a 3000+ AMD 64 chip...
I have a USB problem whereby my wireless USB adaptor just keeps losing power, when I look at the adaptor itself all the power has gone and no lights are on. Unplugging the device and re-inserting it does not get any response from windows. Also, after this has happened, my other USB devices (ie mouse) continue to work fine UNLESS I unplug them and re-insert them. If I do this they also will not power back up. I've tried various adaptors from Netgear and alll of them have the same problems, its like they are causing the USB on my system to fail.
This happens with both the motherboard rear ports and the case front ports and is really driving me mad. Running XP Pro SP 2
I have this problem a couple years ago, and now I've gone back to using the same machine after a reformat the same is happening again. I've installed the latest nFoce drivers and in device management I've turned OFF power management for the USB Root Hubs but it's still happening.
    Any ideas?

Check to see if there is a wire running from your Front USB ports to the #10 slot of your USB block which connects to the motherboard header.
USB connector block layout which corresponds to the pin layout on boards with the Intel spec for USB. Do not cut the pin on the MOBO. You are removing/cutting the wire to the connector block from the case.
    2 4 6 8 10(this wire, #10, not needed)
    1 3 5 7 9(filled/key)
If you find a wire leading to the #10 spot on the block, remove that wire. My block has tabs so that you can pull the wire out, or you could snip/cut the wire leading to that position--if you cut the wire, be careful to cut the correct one and cut it in such a way that it may be repaired if you make a mistake.  Make sure you wrap the wire, the exposed end/s, you remove/cut with electrical tape so as not to accidentally cause a short. I actually folded the wire back and wrapped it.
2 posts to read--Here and Here.
This seems to be a common issue involving many different case manufacturers. I don't know how it applies to other MOBO manufacturers, but in these forums it is not limited to a specific MSI model or supported chipset(Intel or AMD).
