K8N NEO PE MS-7030 and Geforce 6800 Vanilla

I am on the way to buy a new graphic card , and I have 2 choices : 1- XFX 6600GT AGP 8x 128MB 500/100 and 2-XFX 6800 AGP 8X 128MB 325/700, the difference between both about 25$ for the 6800
I prefer the 6800 but I read bad stories with nforce 3 mobos, so it is safe to go with the 6600GT, I know there is no much difference between 6600GT and 6800 but in 6800 you can unlock the extra pipelines and the vertex shader
I read a lot of topics about freezing and craches with ms7030 and 6800 series ??
any one is using K8N NEO PE MS-7030 and Geforce 6600 Vanilla without problems ??
is the problem still or it has been solved ??
SO what is your recommendation ?
Thanks

Go for the 6800, the problems with the nf3 chipset affect all series 6 cards including the 6600GT. The solution is simple - just disable fast writes in the BIOS.
The 6800 is a native AGP card but the 6600GT is a PCIe card with a HSI chip to convert it to AGP and it gets very hot.  Also you may get lucky with the pipes and it should overclock a bit.  If you stretch a bit further get the 6800GT with 256Mb and it OC's to Ultra speeds.
Too right... In addition disabling fastwrites and the dreaded ATI/NV speedup option, make sure that the 2D/3D accel speeds are at the same settings, if not the card tends to "freak out".
I have a BFG6800 OC ("vanilla" 6800 GPU/slight "factory OC") and I got lucky & was able to unlock the hidden hardware. I had an early 6800 GPU though & I think that Nvidia "closed the door" on that mod with the later builds. Something to keep in mind.
Regardless, with the unlocked hardware I was able to get near (close, but not quite) stock GT speeds but the benchmark score didn't really translate to the real world. The big limitation of the 6800 is the puny 128 mb of RAM. If I had it to do over again, I'd saved my pennies & got a GT (w/256mb of RAM), I'd be a lot happier with it. It's not that the 6800 is bad, but the GT is a LOT better.
The good thing is that the 6800 GT prices are starting to come down a bunch since the 7800's came out. If you shop around, you should be able to find a great deal on one. I'm about to go looking myself, if I come across a killer deal, I'll post back.
Edit: I've done a quick search & the chances of just finding an AGP 6800GT don't look too good. I've checked 5 vendors so far and they're either out of stock or discontinued I may have waited a bit too long....
But vanilla 6800's can be found for about $200.

  • K8n Neo Platinum MS-7030; freezes during OS install

I am an experienced builder, I have built dozens of systems and even trained people to build their own. I am also an experienced forum user (new to this board) I have searched extensively on this subject and tried every suggestion I have found. Alas I am still having a problem.
    My System is
    K8N NEO Platinum MS-7030 ver 1
    Athlon 64 300+ Newcastle
    CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) (PC 3200) VS1GBKIT400
    2xWestern Digital Caviar SE WD1600JD 160GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard
    Pioneer  DVR-108
I built this system in November 2004, for my cousin and his family. It installed XP Sp2 and has never given the slightest hint of a problem.
My cousin bought a OEM version of x64 so we could finally make it into the 64-bit system it is intended to be. We backed up his files and formatted the hard drive, he also bought the second hard-drive so we can make it a raid-0 system.
I flashed the bios to 1.70 and all seemed well. Install keeps freezing. I tried to reinstall XP32 still freezes intermittently. I have tried all of the f6 driver installs, in 32 and 64 bit. I have tried PCI and AGP cards, I have tried one sided PC3200 memory. I tried an IDE hard-drive. I have even tried using my Power-man 450 watt server PS that has been running my Dual athlon server for three years. I have tried enabling and disabling every bios setting available, I have tried underclocking the memory and dis-abling cache in the bios. Currently the board is on the table, with one stick of memory, the processor, and an old creative PCI graphics card with a seagate 20gb IDE hardrive, it still freezes. I have tried raisng and lowering voltage for the CPU and memory. I have even back tracked to the original bios, and tried every bios in between, setting and resetting every option in bios, with each, I have made dozens of attempts, and read hundreds of posts here, including Raid tutorials and installing XP  tutorials. It won't even install XP32. Any other suggestions before I RMA?

Nice to hear it helped .
Flashing between different bios generations sometimes needs a full flash with bootbloack/dmi/and reset during/after flash (not only awflxxx biosrom and enter )
this because they are sometimes completly reworked .
I always use the full commandline option also with the /f switch and it's never given me probles switching between very old and very new versions .
Some don't like to reflash the bootblock though , but sometimes it should be , as it has changed trough some versions .
Same goes for winflash , always markes bootblock/dmi/update all/and cmos reset .
The nice thing about winflash is if the flash goes wrong it's just to kill it through taskmanager and try over until you get a successfull flash .
As long as you don't shut down or restart your computer it's working even with the mainblock erased .
Experienced this myself today , when trying 1.9b6mod for neo2 .
Mainblock was erased and new programming stopped at 22% .
So i downloaded from internet another winflash version (1.0.0.1) and was able to reprogram back to 1.8R2mod by tictac .
For the 64bits I had the same problems while testing/running it with the beta version back in january (not tried XP64 with the newest retail version and newest nvidia xp64 drivers) .
It installed fine on single drive but bsod'ed with raid-0 .
Try making a new custom floppy with the latest nv-ide/nv-raid drivers on it , and
recreate the array with "clear disk data" and the option to set as bootable .
Have the sata ports set at "sata dma enabled" in bios .
It's also different depending on which sata ports you are using .
Sata port 1/2 is connected to the nv-chipset though the chip-link to the marvell extrenal PHY for the drives
and port 3/4 use the internal integrated nvidia PHY .
So you can have different results depending on if you create the array on port 1/2 or port 3/4 .

Thanks for the quick reply, looks like im out of luck on that
I wouldn't worry about that too much... As far as everyday use goes, a 754 board is almost as fast as a 939 setup at similiar CPU speeds.
The only way to see the difference is by running a bunch of different benchmark progs, which have little to do with the "real world" anyway.

    WinXP SP2
So right now I am running bios 1.5 and everything seems to work fine, except I get a few random reboots at windows xp startup sometimes right after I type my password I hear a "click" and reboot.  Would anyone happen to know why?
Also, more importantly, I haven't done anything with my computer since my initial set up and now want to upgrade my hard drives.  I looked around the forums and its tough finding posts about k8n neo1 anymore because its outdated, but I do remember users having lots of problems when I checked around this time last year.
So now I just bought 2 hitachi 160gb sata hard drives and would like to add it to my system.  Just plain sata works for me, I don't want to deal with RAID.  I am wondering what bios do you recommend, taking a glance at the forum shows me that bios 1.9 seems to have corrupted some peoples motherboards.  Do you have a recommendation for the best bios out there for k8n neo1?  At msi's webpage I see that now the most recent one is 2.1.
Could somebody please list out the advantages/improvements between different bioses because MSI webpage gives very little info?
    1.4 --> 1.5?
    1.5 --> 1.6?
    1.6 --> 1.7?
    1.7 --> 1.9?
    1.9 --> 2.1?
Also, are there any issues with this board and SATA hard drives, I recall seeing lots of posts about issues last year with raptors in specific but what about my SATA hard drives?
What nforce drivers should I use at this point in time to run SATA.  I've had a headache regarding nforce3 drivers since last year and am wondering whats the best release?  MSI webpage has 5.03, Nvidia official site has 5.10 and 5.11.
What audio driver is best for this board?  I currently use nvidia nforce audio pack 4.57 but that got updated to 4.62, what changes are there and is it worth the upgrade?
Do you think I need to be concerned with anything regarding this upgrade?  Otherwise, could you possibly lead me to some good forum threads regarding k8n neo1 about BIOS and SATA?
Sorry for a lot of questions all in one post but if somebody could help me out I'd really appreciate it.
    Thank you!

“Maxtor 60 GB 2 MB cache on primary master”
A 2MB cache HDD is asking for poor performance.  That “click” is probably your hard drive.  My HDDs make that noise when my PC turns off too.
I run either BIOS 1.4 or 1.7…if you are not having problems, stick with 1.5.
I just added three SATA HDDs to my system (see signature) and had no problems with either.
Use nVidia nForce 5.10, 4.62 audio, and something 7X.XX for video.
You should be good…plug that stuff in and go!  If you only have one PC, you may want to lay out exactly what you need to do first.  If you want to boot off a SATA you might need to change the HDD boot priority in the BIOS.

  • K8N Neo Plat MS-7030 monitor blinking issue

My socket 754 K8N Neo Platinum is acting strange.  It seems I can be using it and suddenly it will freeze for a second and then the monitor will blink once and then everything is as it was.  It will do it randomly.  If I remember correctly, it started after I upgraded from 1 gig to 2 gigs of RAM.  I have run Memtest, Rightmark Memory Analyzer, 3DMark all extensively and have had not one RAM error.  Does anybody else have any ideas??
    I have 2 x 1gig OCZ Platinum 3200 RAM, Athlon64 3400+, Geforce 6800 Ultra, Audigy2zs, and Viomax 500watt PS.

You could have som bad connections in the molex connectors between PSU-mobo , PSU-gfx .
Connectors can build up galvanic corrosions specially between different metal in female/male plugs.
Cleaning the connectors and redo the connections might help .
    Could also be software/drivers/irq etc.
Try loading the system e.g with a live linux cd like knoppix or something.
If it works well there , you know its a software problem in your windows installation/software/drivers and not hw related.

Hi all, please be gentile to me becouse I dont understand much about technical issues of computers...
Here is my problem: I am using windows XP but today I decided install Suse Linux 10.0 32bits version also, but a warning came out saying something about I have RAID by software and if I install linux the data of the discs will be erased. Does your RAID shown you HEALTHY?
The Raptor drive shows as healthy.

You may need to press F6 (using the NVIDIA raid driver for Win64 if you're using the RAID). As Win32 and Win 64 using different drivers.
This has crossed my mind and is definitely on my list of things to try if all else fails.

Have you enable the RAID Array as Bootable Drive in the Bios?
All RAID options are enabled. I didn't touch the BIOS prior to starting the process. The RAID array wasn't listed in the BIOS as a bootable device. In fact, it wasn't listed at all. It was after I discovered this I used F10 to see if it was detected there. The drive was listed, but it wasn't bootable. I then made it bootable. After exiting this section, the PC booted straight into Windows. On the occasions when Windows started, I didn't go into the BIOS to see what it shows.

But why you need to used the NFORCE3 instead of Nforce4 Drivers from the NVIDIA website?
Because it's an nForce 3 board. Or are you saying the nForce 4 should work fine?

    Gd luck.

  • What's the difference between K8N Neo-V v2.0 and K8N Neo-V2?

i just bought a K8N Neo-V v2.0 the other day and just noticed earlier while i was tinkering with it that the model name printed on the pcb was covered with a sticekr of the former while the later is the real model printed on the PCB.
is there any difference here? have i been duped? or di they just flash the bios and relabeled and sold it?

The first one & the last one are in the neo landscape which is only available internally. I guess the last one might be deprecated as the name rde is changed to webide long ago.
The one in the hanatrial landscape is the public developers version available.
Drag & drop - There is a layout editor available to design the views. You just have to right click on your XML view & choose open with layout editor. I believe that should be avail in all those webide's.

  • 3 seprate problems with my K8N Neo Platnium (MS-7030)

    Hey,
I am having three seprate but very annoying problems with my new K8N Neo Platnuim. Two of the problems are audio related and one has to do with my Sata hard drive.
Audio- First of all my audio is reversed and has been for awhile (annoying for games). I also have had a problem with the drivers. I have a stereo hooked up through an optical cable and with the MSI realtek 97 (newest driver) it doesnt work. So Then I tried a different realtek driver from asus site and my optical cable worked but still reversed sound. I decided to go back to the msi driver cuase they came out with a new one and same old problems (reversed sound and no sound through optical).
SATA- Secondly I purchased a maxtor 200 gig hd and tried to install windows xp on it will leaving my windows intact on my old hard drive. Now whenever i try and boot off my new hard drive it says error operating system even if i format it and this windows works on my old hd.
Anyways sorry for my poor grammer and spelling but i would really appreciate some help on these three subjects.
    Thanks

Nobody wants to help me .... I read on a different post that u can only get 5.1 surround sound for movies through optical. You cant even get the sound check to test speakers other then R/L through optical.... This seems rediculus to me!! I have to go through analog if i want surround sound!!! Anyways this still doenst solve my problem of reversed sound or the fact that the MSI realtek driver doesnt work for optical and an asus driver (which i will now reinstall knowing about the fact that my 5.1 surround sound dreams through an optical cable will never happen ) Also my problem with my SATA drive.
P.S. Is it possible to have my audio hook up from the case to the mobo on backwards explaining the reversed sound?
Anyways thanks in advance for anyone who helps me ....

  • K8N Neo Platinum (NForce3 250GB) and SATA2?

    Hi!
I have MSI K8N Neo Platinum with chipset NForce3 250GB. It has SATA Controller. Can someone tell me (with certainty), if I can install a SATA 2 drive? (Once I contacted Maxtor, they told me that I would rather not install a SATA2 drive in a NForce3 250GB based mobo) Has anyone had a problem with a SATA2 drive in this mobo?
    my pc is:
    AMD 64 3000+
    MSI K8N Neo Platinum
    2*512MB Kingston DDR400
    200GB SATA SEAGATE
    320GB SATA WD
    Thanks in advance!

Figures , as Maxtor is the vendor that has problems with their sataII DiamondMax drives on nforce3/4 buildt in sata controllers.
    However , Hitachi T7K250 250GB SATA2 is one that works flawlessly on nforce3 .
They are also set to sataI from manufacturer .

anyone have this combo? does it run fine? i'm having some trouble with my graphics card freezing in games after a little while and i read of a problem with the 6800 and nforce 3 chipsets, where turning off fast writes sovles the problem.

Boy there are a lot of threads about this. I know I've started one here before. As I have stated in other forums and in this one, I have tried everything and I always get pauses that last 8 to 10 sec. sometimes, or stuttering if you want to call it that. I have used all drivers and the only one that allows me to play D3D games at all are 66.93's. Being a computer tech. for almost 41 years, this frustrates me to no end since we are not getting any nVidia support on this. I'm tired of hearing about turning on/off fast writes, PCI latency, rivatuner, etc. etc. etc. None of them work and are all attempted work arounds to an nVidia problem which they need to address. I am getting very close to ordering an ASUS AV8 Deluxe which I wish I had ordered over 2 months ago when I built this system. The sad part about all this is my machine runs great except for D3D games which also used to work great when I had this same BFG 6800 GT installed in my P4 2.8 GHz system. I'm tired of all this work around B.S., I spend all day working on computers and when I come home I want to play not troubleshoot a problem which is nVidia's problem. Get your act together nVidia as you are pissing a lot of us off. Hello VIA and maybe even ATI. There are so many pages in other forums about this you wouldn't believe it.
Yeah, I've also tried a bunch of stuff over the last year, read countless messageboard threads, and even made some of my own. I guess the problem never really went away. Next week when I have some more time I'm going to do some more troubleshooting and narrow down any outside factors. OpenGL games have always performed absolutely great for me. (I built the machine with doom3 in mind and it doesn't dissapoint there). Even though the performance seemed good, Half-Life2 did give me some problems with the studdering. I thought I fixed it (and thoroughly tested it) by disabling fastwrites in the bios. I'll have to check again because this problem is popping up in other DirectX games now. I just downloaded 3DMark05 and scored a 4,929

Now that the cpuz report is complete, let me inform you about my HD and Graphics Card:
    Hard Drive   : Maxtor DiamondMax 9 Plus 80 GB @ 133MHz
Graphics Card: XFX NVIDIA GeForce 5200 with 256 MB of memory
So here is my first question, which is relevant to all the above:
? What seems to be the problem and my CPU clock is limited to 2GHz? I've tried many different things on BIOS but unfortunately my Clock Multiplier can not be more than 10x? Is this a problem with my mainboard? Should I try to flash the BIOS?
    Some more thoughts:
If I try to increase the FSB Frequency, then I get the expected speedups on my programs as long as the change is small. For example, if I set the FSB Frequency on 210 MHz I actually encounter a 5% (about) speedup in my performance. The problem is that on execution time, this FSB frequency changes (actually increases) and that can be onserved from CoreCenter. So as a result, I can not change the frequency that much since system hangs if it exceeds 240Mhz on FSB on execution time (I have reached 239 MHz at most without stability problems on execution time) - this value was obtained (if I remember correctly) by setting the FSB on 215 MHz, when my next step on 220 MHz caused a system crash soon afterwards...
Can you please help me so that I can have a 3000+ performance?
I know for sure that this is a problematic system setup, since my pc behaves more or less on execution times like one of a friend of mine which uses a plain AMD Athlon XP @ 2400 MHz. Needless to say, If I try to make a comparison of the current setup with a Pentium Processor, my system is equivalent to that of a Pentium @ 1,4 GHz (about) which is really irritating.
Thank you in advance for all your help on that one.
Test Beds: I use some programs I 've written in order to have a comperative analysis of my CPU. Hopefully, when this problem is fixed I will provide you with some useful feedback. This is the least I can do for your help.
Did you think that was it all about? Wrong! I have one more question:
? I have a Microsoft Intelli Wheel Mouse which doesn't close whenever I close my system. Why this thing happens? Is there a way of making that PS-2 mouse close whenever my system shutsdown?
Thank you in advance fo your help on all the above,

the memory settings in cpu-z looked like the timings used by corsair memory modules, which is why i suggested the memory voltage of 2.7v as a lot of people have problems from running memory @ auto voltage.(2.5v) it's a common oversight.
Very impressive must admit i pulled a homer, eyes started glazing over towards the end of the theory
Have tried running your hurdles cubic perm17.in in a command prompt window but it doesn't work for me sorry.
you might like to try Super Pi which performs a similar function to your program.  Unfortunately the link seems to be broken at the minute Super Pi, Post Your Times
You might find it here Kanada Laboratory home page - See FTP Link If you can get it run it & hopefully you can then find some comparisons
    luck
I want to thank you all guys for your feedback. Especially you Shanks for your links. At least these showed me that things were not as bad as I initially thought of on my machine!
So I had more guidance on the investigation of my initial problem (hurdles). I 've updated the page which now consists of new information. Perhaps you would all like to have a look again and observe something reaaaaallly strange. I would like to hear your explanations since I am only speculating ...
For your convenience I provide you the link once again:

Finally, I would like to remind you that if anyone has a solution to the problem I have with my mouse (refer to my initial post), I would be happy if you could share the solution with me!

  • Can't install Win7 with K8N Neo Platinum (MS-7030)

    Hi,
with an XP system running smoothly on my old machine, I decided it's time for a Win7 installation. However, the Win7 installation crashes after first reboot with a BSOD some 20 seconds into the windows boot process (logo displayed). I suspect missing RAID (nforce3) drivers as the cause of the problem as I'm trying to install onto a logic partition of an existing RAID, but I can't find any drivers for the board/RAID chipset for Win7. Even MSI seems not to provide anything beyond WinXP64, which is a bugger.
I tried the latest drivers from nVidia for the "3000 professional series" (hoping they mean nForce3 by that), but they do only support the RAID as a device class, not as a controller, which is odd (the manual says that both should be listed in the additional driver selection menu of Win7 install).
Can someone help me out, please? Am I missing something? How did you get Win7 to run on your MS-7030-powered machine?
    TIA!

Using ancient technology it is unfortunately pretty normal things will be hard to do. Nvidia stopped nforce 3 support long ago (3000 professional series does not refer to nforce 3) so there are no raid drivers for Win7. Check this thread of another forum on running raid on a K8N Neo2 Plat. (also Nforce 3): http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/solved-k8n-neo2-platinum-msi-nforce3-win7-x86-raid0-t72428.html

  • K8N Neo 2 Platinum, Raid and bios 1.4

    Hi
Hope this info helps people. I bought a K8N NEO2 Platinum board late last year with a 3200 processor.  Bios version on board at puschase was 1.3  Set board up using Stripe Raid on SATA 3 and 4 for bootable array. Everything fine and installed win XP Pro. Then set up a smaller Mirror array on SATA 1 and 2 to keep data on. Every thing fine so then upgraded BIOS to 1.4 and Drivers on live update and everything still ok.  Board has been running fine but needed to format drives due to the usual things, loads of rubbish etc.
Formatted drives , came to set up Win XP on the Striped Array and here the problem started.  Get through setting up the additional drivers for scsi devices, then set up gets to the starting windows bit and goes nowhere for about 20 minutes, finally you get a message telling you there are no drives attached.
No matter what you do you cannot get set up to recognise any raid array at all.  You need to go back to bios version 1.3 and then everything ok again.
Hope this is not too much of a ramble.

Did you mean MSI's site, for the new drivers?
Nope I meant DFI's site. Only cos I did a search on google for NF3 SATA driver, and that was the first that came up, downloaded it, ran the exe which made a floppy, and it worked first time.
Also...to the question above, I am running both Win XP Pro, and XP64 both on a RAID 0 array, installed form scratch, using the aforementioned sata disk
