K8N Neo Platinum and Maxtor SATA II 250GB 6V250F0

Hi folks,
Having a bit of fun with this one.  After first installing the new hard drive (Maxtor SATA II 250GB 6V250F0) , the BIOS immediately recognised it, I could boot into Windows, and Windows recognised it, and I thought I was in for a smooth ride.  Sadly, the good news ends there.
Tried to initialise the disk, but this simply gave an error after a few seconds, and wrote a whole load of controller error messages to the system event log.  Since then, I've done the following troubleshooting steps:-
(1) Tried in Normal Mode and Safe Mode, made no difference.
(2) Tried with the jumper on the back of the drive set to limit it to SATA I, as I'm connecting to SATA I controllers on the motherboard.  Made no difference with it on or off.  Tried a second jumper just in case the first one was faulty; still made no difference.
(3) Tried using different power cables and molex connectors; made no difference.
(4) Tried using different data cables; made no difference.
(5) Tried connecting to each of the four SATA ports; made no difference.  Tested each port with another drive ((an older Maxtor SATA I drive, which has always worked fine), and they each worked fine.
(6) Tried with and without another SATA drive (an older Maxtor SATA I drive, which has always worked fine); made no difference.
(7) Checked the drive firmware (VA111630); apparently already the latest.
(8) Used the nVidia registry fix to disable NCQ; made no difference.
(9) Disabled write caching; made no difference.
(10) Ran powermax 4.22 to test the drive, and it reports no problems with the drive at all.  Did the full surface scan just in case, and a burn-in test; these also reported no problems.  Curiously, they also reported no problems when I did the same tests with the back jumper removed; i.e. running it in SATA II mode when connected to a SATA I port apparently didn't bother powermax.  Go figure.
The only way I've got anything to happen with the drive so far is to set it to run in PIO mode(!), which I did briefly, and which enabled the drive to be initialised in Windows.  Haven't tried much else in that mode yet, not least because I have no intention of actually using it in that mode for obvious reasons.
So...we have a perfectly functioning disk, attached to a perfectly functioning SATA port, with supposed complete compatibility between them, and with pretty much all other bases covered, and the end result is...it doesn't work.
Has *anyone* got this particular drive model (Maxtor 6V250F0) to work with a K8N Neo Platinum, and if so, how???  ???  ???

Latest Update (this is a real Twilight Zone one ):
LOL, well I should have known better than to be optimistic about anything where this drive is concerned.  With Windows drivers installed, it seemed to work okay as a storage drive.  So I then installed XP on it, and sure enough it hangs when loading the OS.  As the next test, I did a clean install of XP on an IDE drive I have installed, which worked fine (could boot no problems).  I then cloned that to the Maxtor drive (the clean OS had no nVidia drivers installed), and not only did the Maxtor drive fail to boot, but so did the IDE drive (even though nothing has changed on that drive!)    Both would hang at the Windows loading screen.  So then I deleted the partition on the Maxtor drive, so it was effectively back to the situation where the IDE drive booted okay previously (with a blank Maxtor drive attached), but now it continued to fail to load.  If I unplugged the Maxtor drive, however, then the IDE drive would boot.  If I then re-attached the Maxtor drive, the IDE drive would still boot, even though that would be exactly the same situation in which it didn't boot before the Maxtor unplug and replug.  In short, it simply makes no sense whatsoever.  ???
A summary of facts/findings:-
(1) System works fine; all components checked and pass diagnostic tests, no Windows problems in the event log or device manager, no random crashes or anything like that.  The Maxtor drive passes Powermax tests fine.
(2) If the Maxtor drive is attached while using nVidia drivers, it cannot be used at all.
(3) If the Maxtor drive is attached while using Windows drivers (in UDMA6 mode), it can be used in some circumstances (described as follows).
(4) If the Maxtor drive has no OS installed on it, it can be used fine.
(5) If the Maxtor drive has an OS installed on it, it will hang at boot time.
(6) If the Maxtor drive has an OS installed on it, other drives (being booted from) will hang at boot time.
(7) If another drive has failed to boot because the Maxtor drive has an OS on it, deleting all data/partitions from the Maxtor drive will not enable the first drive to boot.
(8) If another drive has failed to boot because the Maxtor drive has/had an OS on it, unattaching the Maxtor drive will enable it to boot once again.
(9) Once another drive has managed to boot again, the Maxtor drive can be reattached (with data/partitions having been deleted), and it will boot again.  If it still has the OS on it, however, it will cause the first drive to hang again.
(10) None of this highly abnormal behaviour is experienced using a Samsung Spinpoint drive (with the same SATA II interface) instead.
What really puzzles me about this is the apparent memory of the system for the previous boot.  (7) and (9) above are identical in the conditions of the drives when the boot is made, and the only difference in the situation is that before (7) the previous boot has failed, and before (9) the previous boot has succeeded.  How/why that should influence the current boot (after a hard reset, with power down in between to ensure no residual current effects), and why this should interact with the Maxtor drive but not any other drive, is a complete mystery.  It's also pretty odd that an OS can boot when the Maxtor drive has ordinary data on it, but will hang if the Maxtor drive has an OS on it.
There is clearly a lot more going on here than any standard version of the way OSs boot and load drivers can account for.

  • K8N Neo Platinum and Maxtor HD problem

I have a K8N Neo Platinum MB with the v1.3 Bios installed.
    I have 2 physical HDs:
IDE Primary Master: 120G Western Digital WD1200JB (7200RPM)
    IDE Primary Slave: 120G Maxtor 6Y120L0 (7200RPM)
The MB sees both drives in the BIOS, however, in Windows XP, I only see the master drive. The slave drive is not recognized within windows. I tried finding the slave drive with the MS Computer Management application and PartitionMagic as well - neither can see the slave drive.
There is something strange about the BIOS screen.
You can see that the primary master is highlighted (in red). The primary slave drive is visibly but it's not showing properly. You can see that the name of the slave drive is all the way to the left and the "]" character is all the way on right panel, next to "Press [Enter]". The name of the slave drive is wrong. The BIOS is showing something garbled. It looks something like "8t/r 6!128". It's tottaly confused :(
I can even select the primary slave drive:
    That's not right!
Pressing enter on the slave drive shows the slave drive (Maxtor 120G) properies:
However, Windows XP will not recognize the slave drive.
I ain't sure what wrong but it appears to be a BIOS problem - why would the BIOS display be so messed up like that ??
I'm not sure what to do.   :(

Yea, I'm really mad because not only will this board not recognize my slave driver properly, it may have also killed my X800 Pro video card
I moved my working X800 Pro video card from my old MB to my new one and when I turned it on, the X800 Pro was dead.
I then reinstalled my old MB, hoping it was merely a faulty MB that was the problem, however, my X800 Pro is quite dead now
I'm not sure if it was me who damaged the X800 Pro or it was the MSI K8N motherboard - either way it's dead
My experence so far with my new MSI MB has been horrible !!

  • K8n Neo Platinum non-booting SATA RAID setup question

I've spent several hours searching an reading trying to find out how to setup a non-bootable SATA RAID. All I can seem to find are posts about bootable installs using F6 and the drivers on a floppy.
I have setup the disks in the bios an defined the array an everything checks out. But when I boot back to WindowsXP it only sees 2 drives that it cannot find drivers for even if I point it to the correct Nvidia directory. I attempted to just reinstall the drivers but that caused a Bluescreen from a corrupt driver file that I then had to go into the repair console to copy from a floppy.
The manual an a couple of posts here say that I should go into Admin Tools-> Disk Management an it will then popup a wizard. But I'm not getting that far.
I currently have the disks on SATA 1 and 2 but will move them tonite because I've read its better for them to be on 3 and 4.
This is on a K8N Neo Platinum 7030 on Windows XP SP2.  If anyone could help or just point me to where I can find help it would be greatly appreciated.

When the raid controller is enabled in bios and you start windows you can install the nvidia raid driver
    from within windows .
Use the add hardware wizard from control panel .
    Start the add-hw wizard .
Yes i have connected the hw - next .
Add a new hw device (bottom of the list ) -next .
Install the hw that i select manually from a list - next .
    Select scsi/raid controller - next .
    Choose have disk .
Then browse for the location of the nvraid.inf file

  • K8N Neo Platinum and WD 74gb Raptor = HELL

    Hey,
Typically I'm not one to post on forums and to be honest, this is the first major problem that I have ever encountered that I have not been able to find a solution for. I currently purchased a 74gb WD Raptor that my K8n Neo Platinum detects flawlessly. I then attempted to install windows xp on it, but right after the post screen i keep getting a "Error Loading Operating System" message.
I have tried flashing my bios... Installing the SATA drivers that came with the motherboard (and also ones that i downloaded and found on the MSI CD that came with the mobo)... I have also tried messing with various BIOS settings that seem relevant to what my problem might be... I've also tried changing my boot order and other such things... I also tried using fdisk, the winxp repair that comes on the disk, fixmbr, fixboot and other such things...
I'm completely out of ideas. Someone please tell me what to do!!!!! I've been at this for 2 days already and still have absolutely no idea why I'm having problems with this.
I've searched many forums with no luck and have experimented with various possibilities... Someone help me!!!!!!!!!!! :(

  • K8n neo platinum and hard drive problem...

    greetings...
well, I have K8n neo platinum mobo with SATA1 controller, and I bought WD 250 GB sata2. I did set up jumper to limit transfer to SATA1 mode on my new drive (although I tried it without jumper, it is the same). Hard disk is working but, I have varying trasfer rate when I copy files from WD250 on other drives, and when copying on that drive. Transfer is going fine, and then it goes very very slow, then again fast, then again slow...And, sometimes, when I am copying large amount of data on that drive, my computer freezes. When I test sustained speed, it is different almost every time (goes from 14 to 65)...
I searched thru internet - with no sucess. I have very good power for my PC. I changed sata cables, and power cables. I updated all drivers. I tried installing XP IDE drivers for that new SATA2 hard disk. I tried almost everything, and with no sucess. WD250 is working fine for, let's say, a couple of hours, and then it again goes slow with varying transfer rate when copying. I also have a very good cooling system, so it's not because of overheating. I contacted WD, they told me to run their diagnostic tool, and the disk was healthy. They said that drive is ok then, and that it is probably my mobo that is causing problems.
anyone have a clue what is going on?
    thanx in advance

    damn...
can't believe no one ever had similar problem...

  • K8N NEO PLATINUM AND 3700+ CPU

hi there can anyone help me with my problem,
i have a 754 k8n neo platinum mobo with a 3400+ cpu and i wanted to upgrade my cpu
to 3700+ cpu that i received as a gift.the problems is the pc wont post or boot with the 3700+
installed so i thought it was the bios so i updated it using live update but still no post
or boot but keep getting the beep code.bios version now 2.1.
    cheers  mark.
    MSI K8N NEO PLATINUM.
    AMD 64 3400+ CPU.
    2GB CORSAIR PC3200 MEM.
    MSI NX 6800GT TD 256.
    WIN XP-PRO SP1.
    HITACHI DESKSTAR 250GB HDD.

Er... This might sound a bit silly but -
Is your video card power plugged in?
I replaced my CPU about 6 weeks ago & I was getting beep & no post and I was tearing my hair out trying to figure out what was wrong... After much "weeping, wailing & gnashing of teeth" I came to find out that my power molex on my 6800 wasn't connected.
Plugged it in & I was in business.

  • MSI K8N Neo Platinum and DTR

    Heya fellas,
I was wondering if anyone know whether or not the new MSI K8N Neo Platinum will have support for the AMD Athlon 3200+ DTR chip?  I know some boards have had trouble with them and I'm hoping that this one, since its a new reviision, will conflict with it.
    Thanks,
    -Ish-

If that's the "Newcastle" version of the 3200+, it is supposed to work!

  • MSI K8N NEO platinum and MOBILE chips

I just found out a problem with MSI K8N NEO Platinum.
I recently upgraded my cpu from Clawhammer DTR 3200+ 1.5V to Clawhammer Mobile 3400+ 1.4V (hoping for better overclocking). To my surprise the mainboard can no longer raise the VCore voltage over 1.45V (it doesn’t matter if I select in the bios 1.5 or 1.55V). The only working option is raising de VCore by 3.3% 5% 8.3% 10%, resulting in a maximum VCore of 1.45 + 1.45 x 10% = 1.6V
I did some googeling and found there is a VCore issue with the K8N NEO and mobile chips, although DTR chips are fully supported (working VCore and multiplier adjustments).
I am using the latest beta bios 1.56B (moded by Pinochio)
Did any of you found a way to resolve this problem? IT IS DRIVING ME INSANE!!!

    Bad post...

  • K8n neo Platinum and Optical Drive problem?

I need some help figuring this out.  I've been searching for awhile but can't find any more information so I figured I'd ask here.
I have a Lite on LDW 411s dvd writer that is on the same ide channel as a lite on dvd player (labled as JLMS SJ-HD1665 in the device manager.
The problem is on the 411S where it will read the DVD/CD disk but when I try to use Cyberlink PowerDVD or Nero Recode to play or read the DVD it will just hang.  If I don't try to play these files and just open them in explorer then I can access them.
I'm trying to see if there are some conflict issues with the nforce drivers but am still looking.
    My setup is this.
    AMD 64 3000+
    K8n Neo Platinum nforce 3 250 Bios 1.4
    Western Digital 120 gb hd
    PQI 3200 1 gig memory
    PNY 6800 GT
    Audigy 2
    Antec Trupower 420
Any help would be great as I'm totally stuck.  Thanks.
Also to note I can play DVDs and use recode fine off the DVD rom drive but just not off the DVD writer (411s).

You might have better luck making the reader the slave on the channel your HD is on. I had both a burner/writer on the same channel and while it worked, the performance was very poor.
Man, I need to get around to posting my specs someday, but I have the same MB and BIOS as you. I'm also using the nForce unified drivers including IDE.

  • K8N Neo Platinum and modded X800 Pro

    Hello everyone,
I am running the Board for a while now and it was rockstable.
    System is:
    A643200+ C0 Zalman CNPS 7000 A-Cu
MSI K8N NEO Platinum Bios 1.2
    2x512MB OCZ 3700 EB
    windows xp pro sp1
    old card: Ati 9800 XT
new card: Saphire X800 Pro modded to XT.
After installing the Card properly, i installed the catalyst 4.8 Drivers and direct9c
After testing a little Bit benchmarking stresstesting, i rebootet and the system and it hangs at the windows xp bootscreen. i reloaded a restore point and tried to reinstall the drivers. no luck.
then i reinstalled windows xp on moday with the same drivers and everything seemed to work fine. windows booted normally, the card worked fine.
yesterday after work. same thing. lookup at the bootscreen of windows.
i uninstalled the catalyst drivers in windows safe mode then rebooted.
normally when i install the card it installs the x800pro and x800 secondary and then finds the rage theater chip and installs it too.
after freezing and getting into windows i can install the card drivers, but the theater chip isnt recognized anymore.
the card is working fine on 3d. i played yesteray for 4 hours at a time and no problems. but after rebooting i cant get into windows.
so i contacted the seller of the card and he told me i am the thired customer who hast issues with the card on this board.
same problem. random freezes on boot sequence, but others seem to have problems in 3d which i dont. i only cant boot.
    any suggestions?

Load BIOS default to try again.
Maybe you can update the BIOS to 1.42 to try again.

  • Are RAID arrays portable between K8N Neo Platinum and K8N Neo3-F?

I think my K8N Neo Platinum might be toast. If that's the case and I upgrade to the K8N Neo3-F, do I get to keep my RAID arrays or do I lose all my data?

I was thinking that since I was going from nForce3-250 to nForce4 I might have trouble porting those RAID arrays over. As such, I'm debating whether or not I should get a pricey K8N Neo to replace the one I have or upgrade to a much cheaper PCI-e K8N Neo3-F (opportunity to get a new vid card, too). Anyway, I have data on the RAID array that I REALLY want to get back but my current mobo is not letting me do that at all for some reason. Not sure if anyone has tried this or not, but I would REALLY like to recover my data without buying an expensive old motherboard. MSI support has given me the usual runaround with "Have you read the manual? Blah blah blah..."

  • Question about K8N Neo Platinum and sound

I'm experiencing "gritty" sound when using the onboard sound of the MSI K8N Neo Platinum.  Does anyone know why I'm getting this, and how to fix it?  I'm using Klipsch Promedia speakers.

I couldn't stand the Realtek AC97 audio - it sounded thin and tinny.
    I hated it.
I tried the nVidia drivers and the Readltek drivers, it didn't help - it sucked and there's now way to fix it.
Do your self a favour and get a Audigy 2 ZS (less than $100) and disable the $hitty AC97 audio - much better after doing that

I'm sure you've seen AMD advertise a 1600MHz HyperTransport in response to Intel's 800MHz FSB.
To my knowledge, you can't use the 5x multiplier in Socket 754 (unless you underclock the Front Side Bus?)
The 5x will be available on Socket 939.
Ah.  That's very enlightening.  Thanks for the info.

  • K8N Neo Platinum and 12V PSU

    Hi!
I'm don't understand, that in the MSI Test Report for k8n neo are power supplies like Seventeam ST-300BLP 15A@12V, and here in the forum everyone says it must be >24A@12V?? I know it's true, becouse my computer with enermax 18A@12V restarts, and freezes.... but why are so weak power supplies listed in the test report??
    batabub

I would agree with the sound advice from hansh for now, to answer your question, look at the spec of the test rig used, to call it minimal is an understatement, it makes a barebones system look like a server
Then look around at the specs of the majority of people in this forum with multple drives top end graphic cards etc.,
this thread may be of interest. New Computer getting random crashes/reboots

  • K8N Neo Platinum and BGF 6800GT problem

    Hey
recnetly set up my board, and having some issues with freeze midgame and really poor 3d mark scores, i.e. im getting 22000 in 2001!!
How do i stop this problem, and power shoudnt be a problem given the power supply i have, so would anyone have an idea?
What should i set the bios up to look like and anything in XP i should be doing?
    thanks

Not sure about the mid-game freeze, but your 3DMark01 is spot-on with that score, if not a bit high. My 3500+ gets ~22.5k at stock, but at 2.5GHz I get 24645. It's very CPU limited so your video card isn't going to make much of a difference past a certain point.
What games are you experiencing lock-ups in?
I'll try to cover all bases here, so some things might help, others not:
1: Make sure your power inputs are connected properly (I know, it seems so obvious it's insulting, sorry).
2: Disable NV/ATI speedup in the BIOS. To reveal hidden BIOS options and reach this setting hit Shift+F2 and ALT+F3 all at the same time. Someone let me know if that's the wrong combo but I think it's correct.
3: Grab the 71.20 FW drivers, they're about the best you can get right now, don't get the crap 66.93 officials, their performance doesn't compare in most situations.
4: Disable Fast Writes in the BIOS; sometimes this has helped fix stutter problems, but if you're getting FREEZES... well it might not help.
5: Drop all clocks to stock settings and see what happens. If that works, try different OC settings if you want.
6: Update your games, of course.
    7: Defragment your hard drive.
I highly recommend downloading 3DMark03, 05 and AQ3 and reporting your scores there and whether or not you get freezes/stutter in those benchmarks. 3DMark03 and 05 are more video card intensive and should exploit the problem you're having. AQ3 might do it too.
Just suggestions, nothing's guaranteed to work. Post back though if you have any new information or if you get it fixed.
