K8N Neo Platinum Hangs at BIOS

My motherboard is very weird. This doesn't happen every time, but every once in a while when I reboot or power on my computer, it just 'hangs' at the BIOS screen. It doesn't attempt to boot to any device; all I see is the Platinum logo. The system is not locked up, as I can hit F10 and see the standard BIOS screen that displays about of memory, etc. I'll hit the reset button on the computer or CTRL+ALT+DEL and it usually boots then, but sometimes I have to do that more than once.
I have the latest BIOS version.
Is anyone else having this problem?
Lately it's gotten a lot worse.  CTRL+ALT+DEL or the Reset button does not seem to help; it will just reboot to the Platinum screen and stay there.  If I power off the computer and turn it back on, then it boots usually, but not always.
I'm seriously thinking of ditching this motherboard and buying a different brand.  I've already had to RMA an MSI GeForce6800 and now my MSI motherboard is going bad.  I'm not too happy right now.

try doing as ktn3 did (although he had a better pSU) it may help

hmm after doing some reading I realize that the 6800 needs its own power rail or something. This whole time I had the 6800 and the hard drive on the same one!
what PSU are you using?

  • K8N Neo Platinum hangs at "Initializing Keyboard Controller" step in POST

    Hi Folks,
    Here is my system:
MSI K8N Neo Platinum (New in box) (no clue on bios version, as I can't access it yet)
    Athlon 64 3200+ 2200Mhz, 640Kb Cache
Thermaltake CL-P0025 Silent Tower CPU Cooler (VERY careful installing this)
    2x512MB Mushkin 991460 EM3200 400Mhz DDR (
    ATI AIW Pro X800XT (AGP)
    OCZ ModStream 450W PS (3.3/28A, 5/45A, 12/26A, 220W/312W)
    WD 74GB Raptor
    Plextor 712A DVD/CD (SATA)
Here is my dilema:  box powers up, POST stops at "Initializing Keyboard Controller". ( I know this because the little lights on the D-bracket tell me so.....:-) I have been on these forums as well as AMD's forums all day now, and have tried everything suggested, except swapping PS.  But I think I have an adequate model.
One by one, I have disconnected any sources of possible problems.  I have reset my bios too many times to count.  I have isolated the MB outside of the case.  I have re-seated everything numerous times.  I changed Bios battery.  I've swapped RAM, and it's positions.  Even took it all off.  I even bought another K8N from Ebay, and have the exact same results.  At no time has the status lights displayed anything different, except for a quick change in color of light number 3 when I do a front-panel reset.  Right now I have nothing but the processor on the board and I still have the same result; POST hanging at "Initializing keyboard controller".  I have swapped keyboards unplugged the keyboard.
I am leaning toward the processor now.  What am I missing?  Should I just do an RMA and be done with it?
       Suggestions encouraged......

    Bowen,
I've got an old Asus P2B that still runs like a champ, although slow by todays standards.  You are right about it being rock solid, I have never had a problem with it, not one.  As a matter of fact I still have it and I use it for my "linux box".  Oops, a little off topic.
Anyway, it looks like MSI received the board today.  I will start the stopwatch and see how long it takes to get a replacement board. I'll keep you guys posted.
    James
Yeah those boards were the best I've seen.  The Intel 865 chipsets are pretty good too.  My previous 845 based mobo was nice as well.  In the past, using VIA boards have been hit and miss with me.  The K8T800/Pro and K8T900/Pro seem to be very stable though...still I would get an nForce 4 chipset over the newest VIA boards.
This is OT but I just received my shiny new BFG GeForce 7800 GTX OC card a few days ago and I was very surprised at it's performance.  I was using a crappy Radeon X300 because I needed a temp card until I could buy either a 7800 GTX or the upcoming Radeon X900 XT.  My last system I had a Radeon 9800 Pro and it ran flawlessly.  I only had one problem with that card and it was driver related to only one game.  The game was Call of Duty and that issue was resolved by going down to an older driver, but then ATi corrected the problem with a new driver release.  Anyway as fast as the 7800 GTX is, I hated it!  The reason is that despite it's awesome speed; the only way I can put it, is that it doesn't run games as smooth as Radeon's do.  It was especially bad with Battlefield 2.  This is ironic because BF2 is supposed to be optimized for nVidia cards.
It has a bad stuttering problem with BF2 and allot of people have this issue.  Some have this problem with ATi cards but most are nVidia users.  Even when I set the quality down to the same settings as my 9800P was at, it did the same thing.  Other games like Counter-Strike: Source ran fine unless you had bots.  Heh, even my slow X300 ran games more smoothly (not faster and at a much lower resolution and quality setting but still smoother) than the 7800 GTX.  I sent the card back and I'm getting a full refund.  I'm waiting on ATi to release their X900 XT and I'll buy that.  What's strange is that prior to buying my 9800P two years ago, I had only used nVidia cards since the TnT2.  Well times have changed I guess. Oh well, I guess I had to learn the hard way, but at least this way I know I'm getting the right card!

  • K8N Neo Platinum - Hangs On "Detecting IDE Devices" at POST

My K8N Neo Platinum motherboard died about a month ago.  Not having the time or the patience to RMA it, I bought a new one.
I got the new system all setup.  The BIOS version on the Motherboard is 1.4
I have a 200gb SATA (NO RAID) HD setup as my boot device, and I also 120gb EIDE setup as a secondary HD.
With my Previous MB, everything worked fine.  I had the SATA drive on SATA1, and the IDE as the Master on the 1st IDE Chain.  I also have a DVD Drive and a DVD Burner on the 2nd IDE chain.  When I set the system up like this this time, the system just hangs at Detecting IDE Devices.  It will never boot into Windows.  If I unhook the SATA drive, it detects the IDE drive no problem and tries to boot to it, although it doesn't have windows, so it will not boot.  If I unhook the IDE drive, the SATA drive boots.  That is what I have been doing for the past two weeks, but I would like to access my 2nd Hard drive.
    Any Ideas would be helpful.
    Thanks!

another thing is never have any other drives in your set up when loading xp to raid
or it writes the mbr to the ide drive not the sata
    hence
it detects the IDE drive no problem and tries to boot to it
you have put the sata raid drive first in bios boot order ?

  • K8N Neo Platinum hangs randomly

Hi, I have this mobo (K8N Neo Platinum) with a AMD64 2800 on it.
It worked well for 2 years but now it start behaving bad.
Sometimes after 4-5 hours it freeze completely (like a screenshot) without HD moving or any sound coming out from the soundcard.
Sometimes it simply reboot or bluescreen (I can't read it..too fast).
I thought it was a Power supply problem so I changed it with a brand new one. I even tested the memory to see if it was corrupted in some way, but the memory is ok. Once it happened that memtest86+ freezed, but most of the time I tested my 2 512mb banks I had no problem at all.
I thought it was a problem with my Sata HD so I installed Xp pro on a ide hd, but I had the same problem.
I even tried to work on linux, but even there I had random freeze.
Now I don't really know what to do..maybe is the mobo broken? or maybe the cpu.
Do you have any ideas? I haven't found anything useful on the net .
    Thanks,
    milo

Before your helpful post, I tried something by myself. I installed MBM5, I borrowed a 12cm Fan and put it near the NB. As you can see from the photo, it's not exactly on the right place..it should go a bit more right against the chassis, but I preferred to put it there temporarily..
When I started it, corecenter said cpu35C and NB29C!.. I started MBM and then played a bit with micromachines4. after that, solitarie and winamp where running..and I noticed that NB is always around 30-35C and the CPU stays around 35-37C. That seems to show that the cpu isn't able anymore to cool as it used to do by 2-3degrees, but that maybe it's because the room temperature is now higher..
The good thing is that it should have freezed/crashed right now!
I could probably try to run something more cpu hungry, but I'm already happy with that. I think I'll try to do some of the thing I used to do when it crashed...like connect an external usb2 hd and disconnect it (in the right way I mean). Usually it crashed after that. But maybe it was a coincidence..
    To answer your question:
    1. I simply installed the cpu as AMD said. so no grease, but just the pad&heatsink&fan provided by AMD.
    2. I don't want to install a new bios..I read that people had so many problems. Next time I reboot I'll write down the version..
    3. I installed Nvidia drivers, but I think they are a minimum of 6 months old
I usually think that's not good to upgrade if everything works well..I'll update anyway..
(2 image providers.. I hope at least one works

  • K8N Neo Platinum: Will future BIOS enhance GeForce performence boost?

I read that the Nforce3 250GB reference boards showed a performance boost when paired with a GeForce FX video card. The K8N Neo Platinum does not take advantage of this now, but will it ever in the future?

Don't know if you have tried this things but heres my list of things .
    BIOS:
-First load bios optimized defaults , then ..
-Set the cpu vcore voltage up by + 0.025v (don't use auto)
-Increase the memory voltage vdimm to 2.7v (or the vendors max defined voltage)
    -Disable fsb spread spectrum
    -Disable dynamic overclocking
    -Disable cool n quiet
-Change the multiplier from startup to 11
-Turn off auto on memory timings in cell menu/dram and set all values manually
and the max mem frequency to 200.
    -Turn off AGP fatwrites
    CASE:
    USB connectors
-Disconnect case front usb from usb header on motherboard.
-Disconnect the d-bracket from usb header on motherboard.
-Change the red MSI ide cable if used.
-Check all stand offs/spacers under the motherboard .
-If using PS2 kb and mouse some board have mislabeled color code
making people connect mouse in kb and vice versa .
Correct is keyboard in the bottom mouse top.
    STABILITY TEST:
    Outside windows and windows drivers:

  • Corecenter 1.7.6 and K8N Neo Platinum 1.6 bios

    Hi
Just updated from Corecenter 1.7.3 to 1.7.6, and K8N Neo Platinum bios 1.5 to 1.6.
First thing I noticed, is my reported CPU temps are really low.
    Before:
    Idle = 34c
    Load = 55c
    Now:
    Idle = 25c
    Load =38c
This cant be right...  Anybody else experience this?
    Cheers

    Yeah, nearly everyone, apparently.

  • MSI k8n neo platinum hangs after post single beep

Today I powered off my computer, and when I tried to power it back up the x850 fan just runs at full speed, and never drops to idle and the screen stays dark. If I reset the bios then it will post as far as asking to press Del to enter setup, but freezes at that point. This thing has been running like a champ and this is the first problem I've ever had! I unhooked/unplugged everything but the keyboard/video/ram/cpu. Tried running with four different memory modules in single channel and dual channel but no luck there either. None of the hardware below has been changed in the last six months. Any ideas? TIA!

Core2Duo E6400 would be a gain of about 15% compared to 4000+ ( in games 1024x768, no aniso or aa). Quality options and better resolution would shorten the gain. Other applications than games e.g. cinebench would run a lot faster on the C2D. The main advantage compared to the 4000+ would be dual core because many future games will be optimized for this. Question is: Is this worth $272?
With only one 7600GT installed you won't be able to play most of the new games in full detail because of lacking 3d power although Core2Duo installed. The gain of cpu performance will be therefor useless (if main focus is on gaming). 7600GT sli-array would be an option for full detail and using more cpu power but it would also be slower than one 7950GT for nearly the same amount of money spent for 2 7600GT.
    1. If you need a gaming pc I'd only buy a new C2D if you can also afford high end vga. Otherwise cpu power is wasted.
    2. 7600GT is only an option if you want to save money now and you want a second one later. Buying two now to get a sli-array isn't very clever. Less performance than 7950GT, same price.
    3. Buying one gig of ddr2 isn't very clever either. More and more applications need more than 1 gig (for example vista!). When changing to ddr2, change to 2 gig dual channel kit.
    4. Getting $300 for your old stuff seems quite optimistic to me.
Conclusion: Save your money for better vga! Take back 7600gt, keep old vga and 4000+, wait for a little time and buy Geforce 8800 GTS. Increase of gaming performance would be unbelieveable. After providing high end vga you can upgrade to C2D in next step and receive a noticeable increase of performance in all kinds of applications.
Hmm.. very good points. I went and read some reviews of the upcoming 8600 and 8800. They are quite impressive for the money. I believe I'll return everything and find a limp-a-long $50 mobo to replace the dead msi. It looks like holding out for quad core with dual SLI is the real gain over my current setup. On a side note I won't be running vista until after sp1 or possible sp2. No tangible benefit to me! What suggestions do you have for a solid performing mobo for the following:
    socket 939
    4 240pin DDR slots
AGP (My X850 XT is still strong enough for everything I do)
SATA 1.5 (no need for the faster one as I have none of those drives)

  • K8N Neo Platinum 1.9 Bios is so wrong

I just updated to 1.9 from 1.7 just because of the USB problems once in awhile. Now i cant even get online anymore. Did something to my Lan. Also my ram shows 1600 instead of 3200 and scores are half of what they used to be. Latency is way slower from 42ms to 68ms, all setting are lowest ,i have Samsung TCCD's 2,2,2,5 1t set.  My temp is now 64C from 32C. This  bios is absolutely terrible.
Why Cant i get online now?????????????????   What did the bios do to the lan?

Quote from: Deeez on 18-September-05, 01:44:45
No im online , what happened was it cleared the Mac address to FF-FF-FF-FF-FF . so i changed it , and now im online. Now it seems to read the memory ok all of sudden, no reason why but reading it ok. Only thing is Temp reallly really high, this is like when the mobo first came out the bios having high temps. Back to square 1, jesus
hey dude, how did you change the mac adress?? my mac adress before the update was 001109, then when i updated the bios (to1.9) was changed to another.. i cant remember the numbers, but i'm sure is different.
btw: at 64°C you can make fried eggs!!!

  • Post problem with K8N Neo Platinum

I am assembling a system for a friend and it hangs according to D-Bracket2 on Processor initialization (Led 1:red, led 2:green, led 3: green led 4: red)
    Specs
    PSU:   Codegen 350W    ( 3,3V   14A
                                           5V     30A
                                           12V    15A  )
VGA:   Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB
    CPU:   AMD Athlon 3000+
    HDD:   Seagate 7200.7  120GB  in   SATA1-port
    DVD:   MSI DR8-A  DVD Burner
    RAM:   M-Tec 512MB  DDR400
If the problem is the processor it should hang on Power On (all leds red), right?
There's some damage done to CPU fan connector so the sensor wire from the CPU fan might have no connection to the mobo. How about ESD-damage, can it cause this?
Another thing I might have done wrong is connecting front panel connectors.
I am just hoping and praying that the processor is OK and the mobo causes this.

Thanks to RacerX for answering but the problem wasn't the PSU.
Mobo caused it and I replaced it.  I think it was the physical damage I mentioned in the first post. I also changed hdd from SATA1-port to SATA3-port but I don't think it matters.
Now everything works fine so +12V/15 Amps is enough.
Does the K8N Neo Platinum hang on Processor Init if it doesn't detect CPU Cooler?

  • K8N Neo Platinum driver installation

There are 4 downloadable mainboard driver zips at MSI for K8N Neo Platinum (not including BIOS a upgrade) -
    1. NVSA020.zip - SATA controller drivers
    2. NF3_CK8S.zip - Chipset drivers including:
    Ethernet NRM driver
    Network management tools
    GART driver
SMBus driver with updated uninstaller files
*Win2K IDE 2.6 driver with updated uninstaller files
*WinXP IDE 2.6 driver with updated uninstaller files
    3. USB2W9XME009.zip - USB 2.0 drivers
    4. ALC69.zip - onboard Realtek audio drivers
    *applicable version of Win OS
Are ALL these drivers from MSI to be loaded?
I think I read in some other posts where some of these drivers (?) cause problems and therefore default Win OS (or chipset manufacturer) drivers should be used instead. Is there a concensus (or list) of which drivers should or shouldn't be installed and the correct procedures and order for doing it?

    1. NVSA020.zip, these drivers come in a diskete with your mainboard as well but possibly on an earlier version. You will need these if you plan to use a SATA Raid/ or simply a SATA drive when installing your OS of choice. Please note that if you plan to use a single SATA drive use SATA 3 or 4. In this case the drivers are not necessary but rather optional.
    2. These are the nforce platform drivers. You can either use the ones off the msi site or the ones from nvidia's site. In any case i would suggest you replace the IDE driver package with the 2.5's -> http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_ide_4.15_win2KXP.html
    3. if you plan updating to a sp 1 or 2 versionof xp, you will probably not need these.

  • K8N Neo Platinum & Thermaltake Kandalf Tower

I just bought a Thermaltake Kandalf tower and put my K8n Neo Platinum Mobo in it but I am having troubles with wiring the top panel of the tower to the mobo.
The Kandalf has the two USB plugs but when I plug them into the mobo it cuts out the USB plugs on the D Bracket, I would like to have both running if possible.
Also, for the life of me I can't figure out how to connect the Front Panel Audio Connector : JAUD1 on the mobo to the Kandalf's audio panel.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

  • K8N NEO PLATINUM Nvidia nforce 3 250 GB Chipset rebooting - hanging !@$%@#$@

    Hi folks,
I am working on the K8N NEO platinum motherboard based on the Nvidia nforce 3 250 GB Chipset.
A couple of days ago I lost my internet connection (broadband). After a couple of minutes it ok again. But suddenly the computer frooze.
After rebooting (button on case) I found out that lots of things couldn't be closed anymore once they were opened. I needed to use CTRL-ALT-DEL to go the the active Tasks. But then that started to freeze too so I decided to wipe everything of the system.
I repartioned and reformated the computer with the win XP PRO CD and reinstalled the OS. I saw immediatly that the system was slower then before and that it did not found the internet connection anymore. I checked the LAN connection and there it sayed that the LAN card was working well but that no cables were connected. This was not true because I dubbel checked them twice. I even replace the cable. It was not my Internet provider neighter because the computer is in a local network and others had no problem to access the internet. So I decided to reinstall and reinstall it again. I reinstalled the system (partioning, formatting) it 4 times. The last time suddenly it found my connection back. Then I installed all updates of windows and I used my live update from MSI to update my components.
I am using live update 3 and updated the BIOS and all other parts who needed to be updated. This was done without the presence of a AV and so on. Everything went well and no errors occured. I received everytime a message with success.
Today my computer suddenly hanged itself again. This already 3 times. Nothing is possible anymore except the boot button on the case.
I also encountered 3 times the while surfing the computer suddenly reboots itself without any warning or message.
What the hell is going wrong here ???
Can aynone give me a clue please ?
