K8N Neo Platinum (MS-7030) RAM Issues

I shut my computer off last night (I almost never turn it off) and when I tried to start it in the morning, all it did was start beeping (1s beep with 2-3s pause between beeps). I figured it was some sort of RAM problem, so I started fiddling with my 2 RAM sticks (512 MB each), sticking them in different slots, etc. I found that the only way I could get it to boot was with 1 stick only in the 3rd slot. Any sticks in other slots causes the same beeping issue at boot. I think it half booted (Windows didn't finish booting before it locked up) once with RAM in 1st and 3rd slots, but since then it just beeps with that combination. I'd really like to be able to use the full 1 GB of RAM that I am used to, but at this point it won't work. Anyone know what could have happened overnight and what I should do to fix it (other than buying new RAM, I'm broke at the moment)? Thanks!
Ed

I tried this and got it to flash something on the screen for a second about a failed BIOS Checksum and something about floppy drive A: I then made a floppy with the 1.7 BIOS on it and the flash utility set to run in autoexec and tried putting that in the floppy. I can tell that it starts to read to floppy right when that messge comes up, but it then immediately shuts off. Any ideas on how to make it not shut itself off and actually flash the BIOS?
Yes....
You will need Two Floppys !
One with DOS only and one with the flash tool and the bios.
Insert DOS untill you get the A:>
Take out the first and insert the second floppy
type the flashutility.exe to get it up and type the biosversion you wnat to flash.
BTW...this info is included in the Readme when you download the bios.

  • K8n Neo Platinum MS-7030; freezes during OS install

I am an experienced builder, I have built dozens of systems and even trained people to build their own. I am also an experienced forum user (new to this board) I have searched extensively on this subject and tried every suggestion I have found. Alas I am still having a problem.
    My System is
    K8N NEO Platinum MS-7030 ver 1
    Athlon 64 300+ Newcastle
    CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) (PC 3200) VS1GBKIT400
    2xWestern Digital Caviar SE WD1600JD 160GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard
    Pioneer  DVR-108
I built this system in November 2004, for my cousin and his family. It installed XP Sp2 and has never given the slightest hint of a problem.
My cousin bought a OEM version of x64 so we could finally make it into the 64-bit system it is intended to be. We backed up his files and formatted the hard drive, he also bought the second hard-drive so we can make it a raid-0 system.
I flashed the bios to 1.70 and all seemed well. Install keeps freezing. I tried to reinstall XP32 still freezes intermittently. I have tried all of the f6 driver installs, in 32 and 64 bit. I have tried PCI and AGP cards, I have tried one sided PC3200 memory. I tried an IDE hard-drive. I have even tried using my Power-man 450 watt server PS that has been running my Dual athlon server for three years. I have tried enabling and disabling every bios setting available, I have tried underclocking the memory and dis-abling cache in the bios. Currently the board is on the table, with one stick of memory, the processor, and an old creative PCI graphics card with a seagate 20gb IDE hardrive, it still freezes. I have tried raisng and lowering voltage for the CPU and memory. I have even back tracked to the original bios, and tried every bios in between, setting and resetting every option in bios, with each, I have made dozens of attempts, and read hundreds of posts here, including Raid tutorials and installing XP  tutorials. It won't even install XP32. Any other suggestions before I RMA?

Nice to hear it helped .
Flashing between different bios generations sometimes needs a full flash with bootbloack/dmi/and reset during/after flash (not only awflxxx biosrom and enter )
this because they are sometimes completly reworked .
I always use the full commandline option also with the /f switch and it's never given me probles switching between very old and very new versions .
Some don't like to reflash the bootblock though , but sometimes it should be , as it has changed trough some versions .
Same goes for winflash , always markes bootblock/dmi/update all/and cmos reset .
The nice thing about winflash is if the flash goes wrong it's just to kill it through taskmanager and try over until you get a successfull flash .
As long as you don't shut down or restart your computer it's working even with the mainblock erased .
Experienced this myself today , when trying 1.9b6mod for neo2 .
Mainblock was erased and new programming stopped at 22% .
So i downloaded from internet another winflash version (1.0.0.1) and was able to reprogram back to 1.8R2mod by tictac .
For the 64bits I had the same problems while testing/running it with the beta version back in january (not tried XP64 with the newest retail version and newest nvidia xp64 drivers) .
It installed fine on single drive but bsod'ed with raid-0 .
Try making a new custom floppy with the latest nv-ide/nv-raid drivers on it , and
recreate the array with "clear disk data" and the option to set as bootable .
Have the sata ports set at "sata dma enabled" in bios .
It's also different depending on which sata ports you are using .
Sata port 1/2 is connected to the nv-chipset though the chip-link to the marvell extrenal PHY for the drives
and port 3/4 use the internal integrated nvidia PHY .
So you can have different results depending on if you create the array on port 1/2 or port 3/4 .

Thanks for the quick reply, looks like im out of luck on that
I wouldn't worry about that too much... As far as everyday use goes, a 754 board is almost as fast as a 939 setup at similiar CPU speeds.
The only way to see the difference is by running a bunch of different benchmark progs, which have little to do with the "real world" anyway.

  • K8N Neo platinum with 3 Ram slots full?

Looking to upgrade my Athlon 64 3400+ (ClawHammer C0) from 1GB to 2GB.
One of the options would be to add a 1GB DIMM to the two existing 512MBs. I know this would drop me back to DDR333, but would there be other problems?
    The board's a K8N Neo Platinum.
    Thanks in advance

It really depends on your processor, since that is where the memory controller is. The newer Sempron 64 based on venice cores can handle 3 dimm's at 400 mhz fine (I think)
Newcastle cores and the older Sempron have issues, im not familiar with them so I dont know.
well, your close.....newcastles (least the one i have) and venices (for sure) can handle the 3dimms (in most cases....depending on ram brand, timings, etc...) and keep the 400mhz. i know i read a review somewhere that the memory controllers on clawhammers are Low Latency Brand picky. most of them would produce errors out the wazzoo with (for example: corsair 2-3-3-6 1t memory ) common ultra brand memory. i remember this review showing the twinmos wouldnt even post. i had a choice between two processors (3400+ clawhammer and the newcastle i have) i wanted the clawhammer cause i here they are wannabee fx's in the makin when overclockin but i did my homework (read/searched many reviews) and found that the clawhammer and using 3 double sided LL memory modules was a shot in the air. didnt want to take that chance for 512k more cache and have a unstable puter. i MUST have my patriot memory (cause they rock...) so when newcastle came i placed my dual channel (512mb x 2) kit in and walla....workin fine...placed my 1 gig stick in..... .......i bet the clawhammer would of worked (since i havent herd any issues with memory and clawhammers) but didnt want to take the chance.
what was your cpu stepping may i ask?? CO was the big booger that had memory picky issues and not being able to use 3 dimms at 400mhz stable.
    edit to my previous post.....
1 dimm used (dont matter on what size of memory module) would yield the best bandwidth scores. 2 or 3 dimms being used would yield same scores (and not matter which stick in what slot.....all combos gave me pretty much same scores).

  • K8N Neo Platinum nForce3 and ram

can K8N Neo Platinum run 3 memory dimms X 512MB DDR400 PC3200 at the same time.

Wouldn’t it be better to look at the AMD website for there list of
compatible Ram to use with the AMD64, because the MB Chipset
has 0% to do with the memory, it’s all controlled by the integrated
    memory controller in the CPU.
I understand that MSI has tested many different brands and types
of DDR with the MSI K8N Neo Platinum, but to get the most optimal
performance wouldn’t one want to use what AMD recommends.
As for the integrated DDR memory controller in the AMD64, I was
reading a article at AMD, and it stated that the AMD64 supports
low latency Ram, so wouldn’t it be better to run the lowest latency
    Ram that one could obtain.
This Ram is one of the lowest latency I found so far, the new
Corsair XMS 3200XL, with tight CL 2-2-2-5, 1T memory timings,
which uses the new Samsung TCCD Revision F’s, 4ns, memory
modules.  The Samsung’s are one of the DDR DRAM Modules
that are validated by AMD to use with the AMD 64.
The review below, states they had 100% success using the new
Corsair XMS 3200XL in the nForce3-250, so I’m hoping that I will
have the same results, I really don’t want to RMA them.
Here is a review on the new: Corsair XMS 3200XL Memory

  • Can't install Win7 with K8N Neo Platinum (MS-7030)

    Hi,
with an XP system running smoothly on my old machine, I decided it's time for a Win7 installation. However, the Win7 installation crashes after first reboot with a BSOD some 20 seconds into the windows boot process (logo displayed). I suspect missing RAID (nforce3) drivers as the cause of the problem as I'm trying to install onto a logic partition of an existing RAID, but I can't find any drivers for the board/RAID chipset for Win7. Even MSI seems not to provide anything beyond WinXP64, which is a bugger.
I tried the latest drivers from nVidia for the "3000 professional series" (hoping they mean nForce3 by that), but they do only support the RAID as a device class, not as a controller, which is odd (the manual says that both should be listed in the additional driver selection menu of Win7 install).
Can someone help me out, please? Am I missing something? How did you get Win7 to run on your MS-7030-powered machine?
    TIA!

Using ancient technology it is unfortunately pretty normal things will be hard to do. Nvidia stopped nforce 3 support long ago (3000 professional series does not refer to nforce 3) so there are no raid drivers for Win7. Check this thread of another forum on running raid on a K8N Neo2 Plat. (also Nforce 3): http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/solved-k8n-neo2-platinum-msi-nforce3-win7-x86-raid0-t72428.html

  • K8N Neo Platinum (MS-7030) Hangs at BIOS

Sorry if this was asked before.
My motherboard is acting a bit weird. This doesn't happen every time, but every once in a while when I reboot or power on my computer, it just 'hangs' at the BIOS screen. It doesn't attempt to boot to any device; all I see is the Platinum logo. The system is not locked up, as I can hit F10 and see the standard BIOS screen that displays about of memory, etc. I'll hit the reset button on the computer or CTRL+ALT+DEL and it usually boots then, but sometimes I have to do that more than once.
Is anyone else having this problem?. And does anyone know what to do to resolve this problem?.
    Thanks.

    Panoramix,
You only have the singlle Sata yes ?
if so you can simplify the list (which is a good ide btw)
    Quote
    1. Hook up the drive to serial port 1/2/3/4. There has been issues around with people using SATA port 1 and 2 in regards to overclockability. If possible always use SATA port 3 or 4 unless doing a Raid 0+1 or 1 where 4 are required.
    4. Go into "Integrated Peripherals"
    5. Press ENTER on "Onboard Devices"
    6. Press ENTER on "RAID Config" select "disabled" on all drives
    Quote
    8. Return to "Onboard Devices" menu
    9. Locate the SATA1/SATA2 - SATA3/SATA4 and enable the option that corresponds with your drive.
    10. Back out to "Integrated Peripherals"
    11. Go into "Ide Function Setup"
    12. Check that relevent "Sata DMA"  is  Enabled
    Quote
    13.From here we will exit/save
    reboot
    Insert Windows cd
    2. Very first thing we will do is boot into the BIOS and go into "Standard CMOS Features"
    3. Check to make sure your drive is located on what SATA channel you have the drive plugged into
    18. Go into "Advanced BIOS Features"
    19. You will want first boot device to be CD-ROM for Windows XP/2k installs.
    20. You will want the second boot device to read HARD DRIVE.
    21. Save/Exit
The screen will prompt to boot from Cd
press the any key to continue
You dont need to load any drivers so can continue through the load driver stage.
When your asked where you want to place the new installation :-
    a) If a new drive Select the make partition & enter the size you want in Mb & Format.it
If you have an early version of windows be aware it will only see 1st 137GB of drive. So format 1st Os Partition only. Rest of drive can be formatted subsequently with Admin tools once windows is running & has been updated at least to SP1.
    b) Select existing partition or delete existing partition & proceed from a)
From here you should be able to complete the install of Windows XP/2K fine. You can go into the bios and make "hard drive" first boot if you wish now.
The above looks complicated as i've not renumbered your original steps.
the bottom line is you dont normally need to do anything with raid or install drivers
    when using single sata
you might also like to look at  Help putting a computer together
Hope this doesnt confuse you but the above is simpler.
    Good look

    Hard Drive   : Maxtor DiamondMax 9 Plus 80 GB @ 133MHz
Graphics Card: XFX NVIDIA GeForce 5200 with 256 MB of memory
So here is my first question, which is relevant to all the above:
? What seems to be the problem and my CPU clock is limited to 2GHz? I've tried many different things on BIOS but unfortunately my Clock Multiplier can not be more than 10x? Is this a problem with my mainboard? Should I try to flash the BIOS?
    Some more thoughts:
If I try to increase the FSB Frequency, then I get the expected speedups on my programs as long as the change is small. For example, if I set the FSB Frequency on 210 MHz I actually encounter a 5% (about) speedup in my performance. The problem is that on execution time, this FSB frequency changes (actually increases) and that can be onserved from CoreCenter. So as a result, I can not change the frequency that much since system hangs if it exceeds 240Mhz on FSB on execution time (I have reached 239 MHz at most without stability problems on execution time) - this value was obtained (if I remember correctly) by setting the FSB on 215 MHz, when my next step on 220 MHz caused a system crash soon afterwards...
Can you please help me so that I can have a 3000+ performance?
I know for sure that this is a problematic system setup, since my pc behaves more or less on execution times like one of a friend of mine which uses a plain AMD Athlon XP @ 2400 MHz. Needless to say, If I try to make a comparison of the current setup with a Pentium Processor, my system is equivalent to that of a Pentium @ 1,4 GHz (about) which is really irritating.
Thank you in advance for all your help on that one.
Test Beds: I use some programs I 've written in order to have a comperative analysis of my CPU. Hopefully, when this problem is fixed I will provide you with some useful feedback. This is the least I can do for your help.
Did you think that was it all about? Wrong! I have one more question:
? I have a Microsoft Intelli Wheel Mouse which doesn't close whenever I close my system. Why this thing happens? Is there a way of making that PS-2 mouse close whenever my system shutsdown?
Thank you in advance fo your help on all the above,

the memory settings in cpu-z looked like the timings used by corsair memory modules, which is why i suggested the memory voltage of 2.7v as a lot of people have problems from running memory @ auto voltage.(2.5v) it's a common oversight.
Very impressive must admit i pulled a homer, eyes started glazing over towards the end of the theory
Have tried running your hurdles cubic perm17.in in a command prompt window but it doesn't work for me sorry.
you might like to try Super Pi which performs a similar function to your program.  Unfortunately the link seems to be broken at the minute Super Pi, Post Your Times

I want to thank you all guys for your feedback. Especially you Shanks for your links. At least these showed me that things were not as bad as I initially thought of on my machine!
So I had more guidance on the investigation of my initial problem (hurdles). I 've updated the page which now consists of new information. Perhaps you would all like to have a look again and observe something reaaaaallly strange. I would like to hear your explanations since I am only speculating ...

  • K8N Neo Platinum sound NOISE

    Hi
This is the most stable system I ever had BUT, I don't know if this is a problem with the onboard sound but I'm getting allot of noise through the sound card. Hisses, beeps and buzzing noises very annoying...   It increases when XP is booting/loaded. I even get little beeps when I'm in the Bios...
I have tried moving the cables away from each other even moving & shielding the mains cables, muting the various inputs & outputs in Win XP and disabling the sound in the bios I still get the noise! Oh, and I’ve tried it through headphones... So it’s definitely interference with something inside. I was thinking the graphics card…
So, would I be better off getting a separate PCI sound card (e.g. SoundBlaster)?
    Can anyone help??
    Thanks

  • MSI K8N Neo Platinum Nforce3 250GB - PSU?

My sister in law have this board, MSI K8N Neo Platinum nforce3 250gb chipset, recently the power supply sounds noisy and a high frequency sound from the Antec Truepower 380W SP. Had maked an RMA to Antec and they had agreed to replace the 380W psu with SmartPower2.0 450W. But they asked me one question, that im not sure about:
"Make sure that your motherboard does not need the -5V. If you want more information on the power supply you can look at this link: http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=26450 "
So, do Antecs SmartPower 2.0 450W suits this board and what really is -5V for? As I read the manual, it said ATX 20 pin power connector: JWR1 and at pin 18: -5V
So does it mean this board need a psu that gives -5V on ATX 20 pin power connector and thos board can't use with Antecs SP 2.0 450W?

    Hi!
The K8N Neo Platinum (MS-7030) doesn't use -5v to anything.
So the -5v from the old atx spesification is not needed in your case.
    WoW, thanks for fast reply!
So, it won't be any problem to use Antecs SmartPower 2.0 450W with this board then? Want to make sure about it, before accept Antecs offer for replacement and had spent over 4 days to find the problem with his computer. Really don't want to do it again.
    This is his riggs:
    Antec Sonata
    AMD 64 3000+ S754
    Corsair Value S. PC3200 DDR 512MB
    Maxtor Diamondmax 9 250GB SATA
    Maxtor Diamondmax 9 IDE 160GB
Sapphire Radeon 9550 Atlantis 128MB DDR
    and
Accton ethernet card on PCI slot
    MSI D-Bracket2
    so
With the "new" Antec SmartPower 2.0 450W
Any problem with this rigg and PSU?
    edit:
Dound this post that it said the board do need -5V and now Im confused?

  • K8N Neo Platinum with Venice vcore problem

    Hello,
I got a new Socket754 CPU Venice E6 3000+ and replaced it with NewCastle CG 3200+.
But BIOS indicates VCORE is 1.9V+. It's obvious that it's too high and also CPU temp is 0C/32F.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

  • K8N NEO Platinum BIOS 1.8

I updated to this, only to find my machine would not boot to Windows. This, presumably because it was using 1T when, with two double-sided DIMMS, I require 2T. I couldn’t find anywhere to change that setting.
I noted on the boot screen that it was a workstation BIOS, and the flash utility is 859G rather than the usual 833C.
    Got 1.7 on there now.
Have other people had trouble with this?
